Will E-Ink Cure Your Screen Addiction?
Переглядів 6443 дні тому
I thought an e-ink device would break my screen addiction… but I was wrong. I fell for the marketing, believing that switching to e-ink would magically reduce my screen time. In this video, I share my experience with screen addiction, why e-ink didn’t solve the problem, and what actually helped. I also discuss devices like the Amazon Kindle and Supernote Nomad that support my digital minimalism...

Minimal Phone's Communication Strategy is Confusing
Переглядів 3,9 тис.11 днів тому
The Minimal Phone project promised a fresh approach to minimalism, but its communication strategy has been anything but simple. Updates are scattered across various social media accounts, founder posts, and the main company account, leaving backers in the dark. With production wrapping up for the first batch and packaging revealed, we still have no full demo of the device. Why is it so hard to ...

These devices once represented the best of accessible tech, but how do they stack up in 2025? I'll break down their design, performance, user experience, and unique features to see which one holds up better today. Whether you're here for nostalgia or to find out if these classics s...
30 Days with the SLEKE Phone | The Good, the Bad, and the Minimal
Переглядів 1,2 тис.18 днів тому
In this video, I share my one-month experience using the SLEKE phone, a fantastic device for digital minimalists. This de-Googled phone has helped me reduce my screen time significantly, and the battery life is excellent since I don't rely on it all the time. While I love its focus on minimalism, there are a few areas for improvement. The home screen aesthetics become distorted when I enlarge i...

Oh wow!!! Love this. Look at those keys! 😊
Oh wow so iconic !! en azerty en plus 😍
I may now drag my original O2 XDA and my XDA Exec out...
That is awesome. I wish I had one back in the day.
This reminds me of Planet Computers who are now defunct but still have webpage trying to sell the Astro Slide for almost twice the amount that was originally offered on their IndieGoGo campaign, but there is no phone to be had. They had a similar problem lack of communication and delay upon delay and left 100's of backers holding the bag with no product in hand. This is a sad situation, as some shipments have arrived in early backer's hands and have shown keyboard and other software glitches which cause significant loss of functionality. I will wait to see if this company stays together before investing any money in a sub-par product. I'd rather spend more money later on something that will work out of the box. Thank you for bringing this up as I agree with you wholeheartedly.
How would I go about install Sleke on your own phone, I have a pixel 6 phone with GraheneOS on it and I love it, but would love to give sleke a go.
@@NeilHoward-mm6kx I don't think they offer this as an option yet. I will have a chat with them on Monday and see if it is something they plan to offer.
Thank you @@LauraMalvoyante ! That would be awesome. 🙂
Hello, i need help. How to put on album covers?
@@yannickker it's been a while but I am pretty sure I used this www.mp3tag.de/en/
I found one at 100 bucks, I don't know whether to buy this or the titan pocket, Im afraid the key one will be too good to be a dumb phone, the screen it's big enough to binge scroll..
im using the q10 and i absolutely love it so ahead of its time it makes modern smart phones look overrated the design is on point, the camera is great and the music player is fantastic im just looking for a community of people using these kind of phones maybe we can share ideas and some hacks
No E-INK won't help if it still has the avenues to connect to the internet, look at that Minimal phone it's a regular android using E-INK I see nothing Minimal about it.
@@MrHYDRO84 it's the opposite of minimal in my opinion. Maybe it has minimal carrier support though 🤔
Dear Laura, thanks for sharing your personal story and always giving us these profound tech insights on minimalism, it's such an important topic. 💛🙏
Oh my gosh you are too kind. This is going to help the channel so much. Thank you!
I’m the type of tech person who’s have purpose built devices. I’ve my a Sony Mavica for still photos, my MiniDV camera for videos, my iPod Classic (with a 256GB ssd and a large battery), and then I have my steam deck for games and basic computer needs. I also have my phone. Which is a iPhone SE which I keep in black in white due to eye strain issues from colors. I don’t read or write due to dyslexia. Trying to read hurts my head and eyes. My hand writing looks like chicken scratch. So when I had my Blackberry Classic before the stupid 2/3G takedown. It kept me grounded and using my phone as a phone. I am hoping to get my minimal phone whenever that will be. I need my keyboard back haha
Keyboards help so many people. It's the only way I can write some days. Black and white setups work the best for me too as well as matte screens.
It’s more updates than the minimal company haha! That put a new meaning to minimal to the minimal company name! Haha just not in a good way. I hope my phone does show up though.
Just catching up on this, missed the stream. I'm left handed but use a phone in my right hand so the scroll wheel on the LPIII will be interesting.
@@GaryStuartWicks that's fascinating to me. My son is left-handed and does a lot with his right hand as well. Lefties are more adaptable in general I think.
@@LauraMalvoyanteit's forced adaptation, everything is inherently right handed so we have no choice.
@@journeyproud I somewhat disagree. In my school we were never forced to write right handed, though many were, that was a long time ago, I'm now 58. I play golf and cricket right handed, but snooker and darts left handed. After 40+ years of handling firearms for military use I prefer left handed use but am more accurate with right handed use (some weapons require this due to round casing ejection). With technology products and devices I believe we simply go with what feels most comfortable. I use a computer mouse right handed and always hold my phone in my right hand whilst using my left to type, but when not typing use my right thumb to navigate and control the device. It would be an awful world if we were all the same, wouldn't it?
Laura, maybe it would be useful if you could do a list of what is available on the market at the moment and ones that are a work in progress as some mentioned by commenters I have never heard of. Thanks x
@@MrHYDRO84 yes I will work on this.
@@LauraMalvoyante I think it will be useful x
I have been looking at the Nomad. With the new Manta, do you see yourself getting that device to replace the nomad? Are there any issues or regret with the smaller screen size? I am personally struggling with my consumerist pay so much for either given the cost of paper and a pen, but dang, they look so appealing to me.
I've seen a lot of issues with the Manta at the moment. I wanted a smaller device to take it with me more easily so I am happy with the Nomad. The pens and cases are pricey but they are good quality.
@@LauraMalvoyante That is news to me. What issues have you seen with the Manta?
@TheBlackSkimmer I've seen people complain about the side swipe panels being a bit finicky. This could be a software issue though and hopefully they will sort it out.
We dont want any camera! If I want a camera ill gp buy a camera! That's the problem They're trying to make phones do everything.Next I'll be feeding us haha
It’s worth knowing that you can’t exactly completely get rid of music streaming. It’s still useful for discovering artists or listening to albums before we purchase as if addition is more expensive but you don’t care about the extra songs because you don’t like them it makes sense to say that money, people prepare to spend a lot of money on the music upfront
I have one but I need to get the battery replaced. I would use it when I go out so that way I didn’t have to worry about my phone so much
Have you tried switching yourself off and on again ?
ño
get razr v3xx for old vibes :p
I have one 😊
100 percent agree with this, if you have a severe tech addiction e-ink will not help you, only a true dumb phone like the light phone 2, Punkt, etc would help,
Yes. I use my Punkt when I'm feeling out of control. Waiting for my Light Phone III though.
Hi Laura. Whats the launcher on the Boox Palma you are using? Thx
Niagara launcher
@@LauraMalvoyanteThank you dear. You are the master of my digital life.
Hello Laura, I love your videos and I'm very interested in low tech and minimalism. Do you live from videos and social media or do you have an other job and if yes is it a work in a company engaged for minimalism and help people to restore their time? I'm a young engineer and I don't know how to work for these kind of companies. Thanks for all your videos
I'm "trying" to live from my videos but I'm a long way away from supporting myself. I left my job last August because of my poor vision and I worked as a social media manager. My digital minimalism lifestyle was not a good mix with my job. It depends on your company and country when it comes to being less connected. I live in France and there are strict laws that companies cannot contact you outside of work, on weekends and when you're on vacation.
Good video ive been using old phones 4 years as an mp3 but i do love the Blackberry torch i remember my kid having one and i love physical keyboards i really wish blackberry came back
I wish they would come back too. I took them for granted.
Very good video. I hadn't thought about the hazards of success--the lack of eye strain leading to more screen time usage--as a down side to e-Ink. I will be looking for scholarly studies that assess the value of e-Ink for digital minimalism. It is interesting that the Niagara launcher does not introduce enough friction, or that hiding the Play Store does not remove it as a danger. What would be nice would be if Boox Palma devices and the like would give users the option to delete apps forever (with no ability to re-download them to that device). I know that that is technically possible (Amazon gives readers the power to delete their purchased books forever, unless they re-purchase them, although I don't know why anyone except Amazon would want them to do that--but that's another story).
That would be great if you could find any scholarly articles of e-ink and digital minimalism and/or screen addiction. I found some articles but they were all sponsored by companies selling e-ink devices. I'm sure there is a way to delete the Play Store.
@@LauraMalvoyante Yes, it will take some searching but i have a hunch that such articles are out there. I will try and find them.
Fantastic topic! I had to post this even before I watch it because I have been waiting for someone to explore this for a long time, thanks.
It's something that has been on my mind for a while and I finally got around to it. Hopefully I can build on it and raise more questions for others to expand on it.
Hi Laura, thanks for another excellent video. I’m at the point of purchasing an e ink in order to reduce my screen time and agree with the points you make. With this in mind I have been considering the Balance Phone recently, not e ink but highly restrictive but with essentials such as google maps, WhatsApp and other apps that I will need. Have you considered this phone for a review or have any views on it? Many thanks 😊
I really like the Balance phone. I don't have plans to review it but I wont rule it out if the Light Phone III doesn't work for me. I have been using the SLEKE phone for the past couple months and it is a good balance of necessary apps and digital minimalism.
Hi Laura, I'm an e-ink user and ditched by Boox Tab Ultra C because it was able to do too much so I switched it out for the reMarkable Paper Pro and found the perfect balance of minimalism I was seeking. I am now embarking on the next stage and was tossing the coin with the Minimalist Phone and the Light Phone III, I opted to purchase the LpIII and simply cannot wait for the arrival. A product simply being e-ink won't do it for many people and I wanted to get on-board with the ethos of the guys behind the LP. Keep up the great crusade, many of us are sharing the journey with you.
@@GaryStuartWicks great to hear the reMarkable Pro is working well for you. ePaper is a great tool to help me stay off my phone and I can see it unlike traditional paper. I have ordered the LP III as well and can't wait to receive it. I hope it will be the only phone I need for years to come!
Thanks for the content and effort! I think the challenge is more what to do with the extra time gained by going minimal. There has to be a plan, like a hobby, write a book, learn a different trade, etc If there is no backup plan, then nothing will help, as, like you said, you will just circumvent the process and go back to a second reg phone to get the fix.
Yes. Finding hobbies and activities to fill the free time is a must. It's a continuous process but it's worth it.
I think minimal phone is better, and I’ve pre ordered a pebble one.
Oh no not a bloody Iphone
haha
@@LauraMalvoyante I am not impressed
@@MrHYDRO84 it's the perfect dumbphone when you hate Apple. I avoid it like the plague
Actually I have one and I am trying to unlock it from AT&T. If I can't I'll use it as you suggest.
Nokia 500. Extreme compact. And useles. Have 3.5 jack
i got a nokia c02 or something a slider phone of 2009..works great even with earbuds and headphones ..i go ad more music again soon since its easy to use and downside is back is sticky
Yikes the sticky back. This happened to my old Kindle. So many good old devices to use.
@LauraMalvoyante short story mom found it in her apartment in a drawer I got a old battery of my old devices and it ran ! Should I try fix it in a way ? Idk how
Evil Apple's Airpods Pro2 has this thing with older phones (even their own such as the iPhone 3Gs) where if you pause a song once, it just doesn't play again until you reconnect them and I only have Airpods as of now so I can't use my recently bought BB Classic outdoors or at the gym. :(
I couldn't get my Airpods Pro 2 to work with the BlackBerry Torch at all. Super frustrating
I agree with all the points. However, there's one mp3 player that modern enough to support streaming and all sorts of apps as well. The iPod Touch (7th gen) running iOS 15!
Wow that's good to know 👍
Ya... I was pretty frustated. Ive heard some sketchy things about the guy so whats the game plan? Produce a phone that doesnt even work and then have people wait for updates? Scaryyyyyy... Did you get one?
@@jennafo No I didn't get one and I wouldn't get one even if updates are "promised". The phone still doesn't have FCC and CE certification.
@LauraMalvoyante interesting. So weird. I have so many questions haha
I'm also going through the "revisiting old devices and giving them a new life" vibes, it's so much fun, I've been collecting old apple devices for a year I think and I just love to know that they're not in some dumpster, plus they make beautiful bedroom/studio/setup decor
They really are works of art. I've seen people on Etsy upcycle old apple devices into home decor items and even coaters. My iPod shuffle no longer works but it's a great hair clip.
Sound quality?
Pretty good. Depends on your file type but it works just as good as any other phone.
@@LauraMalvoyante I see. Thank you.
my love i just ordered this phone was yesterday and was scouring youtube for a decent and recent review. thanks for blessing my feed
I still use one but software and Google are the issue
Sony sells MP3 players. I think they call them DACs. They are several hundred dollars. It's basically just an iPod Touch with Android, so repurposing old devices isn't too different from what Song offers.
I saw those. I agree that old devices can do the same for a lot less.
@LauraMalvoyante - If one produced music and was an audiophile, I could see the benefit of them. I have a feeling I got the acronym wrong. Nonetheless, I think it's unnecessary for most people.
Yeah, the acronym you used, DAC, stands for digital audio converter, which is something that all music players, phones and computers have in order to produce sound from the digital signal. The term you were looking for is DAP, which stands for digital audio player. The quality of the DAC varies from device to device though. Serious music players and phones built for music will have better DACs or even just better implementation of the DAC. For example, the LG V series of phones will best ANY phone (or even iPods) today in terms of music playback and power given to headphones thanks in part to the tuning of the Sabre brand of DACs that LG used by the company, Meridian Audio. Implementation also matters as HTC demonstrated with the HTC 10. They used the same DAC all high-end Android phones were using but implemented the DAC better and was able to best everyone else that was using the same DAC. HTC was only second to LG at the time in terms of sound.
@orangeyellow-me1pz - Thanks for providing the correct answer. I knew what I wrote looked off. I also remember having the HiSense A-something and it had HD Audio when headphones were plugged in to the phone. I'm not an audiophile, but I did notice the bump in quality -- even for lower bitrate music. I couldn't tell you anything about how it works.
04:20 - I used to use the buttonless iPod Shuffle as a tie clip.
That's awesome!
This is very stylish! I will give my girlfriend an ipod. Thanks for the idea❤
Love a Blackberry
Me too!
