    Flew it today for the first time. Trained on realflight first. Flys very similar to realflight. Watch the wind. It can get away with you. The more power you add in safe the higher it climbs. Great videos, helped greatly.

    It is so nice to see someone evaluating a plane for beginners. Thanks for taking the time and putting the plane thought its paces. This is why you guys (gal camera crew LOL) are the very best.
    The last model plane I flew was when I was 14 (1962, yeah, I'm an old fart LOL) and it was one of those control line circle flyers. RC airplanes were way too expensive for me to ever consider. At one point in my life I even started taking flying lessons to get a private pilot's license. Now that I am retired and have all kinds of time, and more hobbies than I can count, I want to start flying model planes, and this looks like the perfect plane to start with. I like the simplicity of the design. It does not have all the bells and whistles of advanced models but hearkens back to the kind of planes that one would buy when I was younger, it's nostalgic, even though it is electric powered (I hated those old engines with their glow plugs) and sophisticated.

      Everybody starts (or re-starts) somewhere. We want to provide as much information as we possibly can to get you back in the air. Things are so much different (and easier and cheaper!) than they were back in the day. This is a great option to jump back in with!

    I just bought one today, and a few extra batteries. I’ve been debating it for sometime. Gotta say, WOW!! Parts and batteries are affordable, out of the box for my first hobby shop plane is great. I was a little freaked out and nervous from previous experiences that I’ve had from a different plane that may have been more advanced than what I’m used to. Out of the box read the instructions. Went to two different parks and practiced a few things. Did I mention picking up two more batteries was only $22? I had a blast with this new plane.

    Good stuff brother ....been watching for a few weeks now and you got me hooked. I've been playing around with drones for a while with the grand kids. Then started watching you with the these planes and guess what? yep I bought the Apprentice 700 RTF today and I also singed into amazon thru your affiliate link and saved it so now on every amazon purchase (which is a lot more than I'd like to admit) will go thru your affiliate link. I'm going to make the purchases anyway may as well tie you in with it. Winter is almost here, and I can't ride my bike much so I may as well spend some money on planes. Thanks for all you do and educating people in this hobby.

    Just setting mine up now and going through the amazingly helpful video for the third time.
    I saw that you used a bind plug to bind the NX10, but the Rx can be bound automatically without a plug. If you look back in through the battery hatch to the receiver you'll see there's a flashing LED on the left hand (as you're looking) side of the unbound Rx. This alternates between 20 seconds of continuous flashing and 20 seconds of groups of (I think) four flashes with breaks in between them. For the 20s it's flashing continuously it's available to bind a DSMX transmitter, and for the 20s of intermittent flashing it can bind an SLT transmitter like the one that comes with the PNP version. I guess when you tried without the plug you must have landed on the SLT period.
    Thanks for such an awesome channel and for the great amount of time and thought you must put in to produce such long and detailed and entertaining explanations. Now what about a review of the Kavan Twin Shark 2700? That's the one I want when I've learned to fly on this one! 🙂

    Very cool plane and remote I like the idea of using it right out of the box with the flight sim. The radio when I seen SLT I remember Tower hobbies had a brand under that name. They had a add on module to put on your transmitter and then you could use one of their receivers. I tried it out but had to send it back due to bad signal / reception and sent me another one but same issue. I figured it just had to do with the area I was flying at. . I eventually sold My Futaba And the SLT and went Spektrum and have not had any signal issues since.

    Hi Brian. I appreciate your content. Excellent RC channel. Question? I fly the Apprentice 700 rtf and the Carbon S2 1300 rtf, and I'm interested in adding the UMX Turbo Timber 700 bnf to my hanger. Do I need to buy another transmitter or will either of the two rtf kit transmitters also work with the Timber? If not, then is there an inexpensive transmitter that you can suggest for the Turbo Timber 700? Thanks.

      @BrianPhillipsRC  6 місяців тому +1

      Are you 100% sure you're using the right adapter? If you're doing it wrong, it can be dangerous...so check these things...
      1) Does your balance lead go into the port correctly (it's BLACK, so HARD TO SEE!)...make sure the polarity is correct... (-) NEGATIVE / GROUND is on the LEFT most pin
      2) I assume you have an IC3 to JST adapter, since that's the TYPE of connector you should have on this plane....and it connects ALSO.
      3) If you only have the DISCHARGE LEAD (red - jst lead) plugged in, it WON'T WORK!!! You must have the balance lead inserted, and NOT to the RIGHT SIDE - meaning, it would register the cells at the TOP of the range, not 1 and 2...but rather cells 5 and 6 would populate the screen.
      4) IS THE BATTERY TOTALLY DEAD? What about below about 2.8V DC per cell? If you don't know how to check, get a DMM (Digital Multimeter) and use the three pins of the balance lead to check between each pair...which are the two cells in series ( hence 2S ) then verify BOTH sets show between about 3.00-4.20 VDC...and if that's true, you have something FISHY going on with the charger.
      5) NOW test with another battery, or do this first...does it work? Use a DUMB battery, NOT a SMART battery, as these 2S packs AREN'T SMART (if you didn't pick up on that detail).
      6) Okay, now that you've tried most stuff, if it STILL doesn't work - you better get that thing to a hobby shop or contact Horizon Hobby - don't want to get you into a bad situation. When and if you EVER have a charger that miss-behaves, put it on notice. USE EXTRA CAUTION, up to and including charging outside on concrete, if you want to be 100% sure. If there's a REAL problem, don't risk it. Verify it's working before you get caught in a bad situation. Always be careful and respect your chargers and batteries, but even with SMALL lipos, there's a real risk of fire, so don't screw around too much. If you find a stupid issue, fix it. If it's working after you identify and resolve your issue(s), then go back to normal carefulness. - Remember, 2 main ways people get hurt in this hobby 1) prop cuts - which can be terrible & 2) Lipos - don't get hurt EITHER way!

      Apprentice 1.2m. For beginners, you don't want to deal with wind affecting your flight, and with anything less than very low winds this Apprentice STOL wouldn't handle very well, in my opinion. The 1.2m Apprentice can take much stronger winds and doesn't cost too much, even as an RTF kit. I've flown the Apprentice 1.2m in winds strong enough to push the plane around on the ground and I was able to control it just fine in the air, and land properly too. If you don't like the Apprentice, that 1.1m Aeroscout will do you well too. Friend of mine has one and it's sturdy and easy to fly. PERSONALLY? I'd buy the Apprentice, STOL or 1.2m, and the Aeroscout. Once you start buying, it's hard to stop...

    Im gonna be a first time flyer. I have boats and 60+ cars. Ive been looking at the 1.5 apprentice sts. Wouldn't it be a safe plane to start with also?

    • @jamesmoore9008
      @jamesmoore9008 9 місяців тому

      The 1.5 apprentice is a popular club trainer especially at larger fields. I’ve only flown it on the sim but it’s probably the easiest plane to fly on the sim very forgiving. This STOL 700mm version would be better for smaller areas and parks since its wingspan is less than half of the full size 1.5m (1500mm) apprentice. You’d just need more area to fly the larger aircraft.

    • @myksanchez1222
      @myksanchez1222 9 місяців тому

      Bigger planes will handle wind better. How often are there ideal conditions for flying? Not very often, at least for me. I'd go with the bigger plane, at least the 1.2m. Personally, I'd buy the larger plane and this new one too...

      I'm afraid you don't know what you're talking about. If you want to learn to fly the right way, you're going to buy a hobby grade, durable airplane with quality equipment, a minimum of 4 channel controls, and plenty of aftermarket support, and for $230 this plane is a bargain. If you're thinking about those $40 planes you see at target, Walmart, or those cheesy Chinese websites, you are taking a very bad first step towards learning to fly. You get what you pay for...

    @BrianPhillips, I accidentally damaged the circuitry. While connecting the battery, some sparks flew, and the wire on the plug got burned (like a fuse wire blowing off). I think such damages can be prevented by adding a power switch like on the Apprentice 1500. Is it feasible to add a switch like on the STOL? If so, what hardware do you suggest?

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  2 місяці тому

      How'd you even hook it up backwards? The power wires are keyed on your battery, since it's a MicroPH 2S lead, so if you line them up right, they go together...if backwards, they're not supposed to even press in.
      I would say, rather than try to add a switch, use a little more caution in landing your battery lead. There used to be power switches on SOME planes, but even then, they were primarily on planes were you had to REACH PAST the prop to load a pack. This was more for safety of the pilot than for polarity protection, as I understood it.
      That being said, accidents happen. I hooked up a 6S pack backwards ONCE to an XT90, which I didn't realize you could force an IC5 into an XT90, but you CAN...evidently. Once I fixed the end on the ESC, she fired up and worked flawlessly. I was lucky...VERY lucky, and it only cost be a half hour of work, and a new XT90 end, and new IC5 end...
