    Just want to say a massive thank you. this is my first plane ever and I have no experience in the hobby, and reading through the manual myself got a bit overwhelming. but I followed along through this entire video and it's now done! thank you for adding so much explanation too!!

    Thank you. I have this plane. It flies and flies and flies. It’s been abused a couple of times, pilot error both times. As you now know it will handle some wind. On a calm day it’s a beauty. Arrows Hobby totally nailed it on this plane. I’m glad you reviewed it. One other thing, flying mine on an old DX6i, AR620 receiver, no stabilization.
    Looking through the comments, looks like we have a lot of Arrows Hobby Bigfoot owners and supporters.

    I've been flying one for almost a year. I like it better than any of my other STOLs. Its also available as a PNP for less than $200. The only thing the Timber does better is the landing gear. The wheels are a little hard, and the aluminum gear can get bent.
    If you swap the esc to a 50A it runs like a dream on 4S.

    Love your videos! I had two trainer type balsa planes (I built one from a kit) when I was 10 years old. I was too scared to fly either one by myself. Fast forward 26 years, my kids and I resurrected both and flew one without crashing! I recently purchased the FMS Cessna trainer and have been practicing quite a bit. After a few successful flights and many propellers and front nose gear replacements I'm back into it! I love this aircraft. I bought one about a year ago. The only issue I had is the ESC is buried in an unvented compartment at the bottom of the plane. I live in the desert southwest so the ESC would overheat and start beeping and shutting off the motor in flight. There's lots of room inside so I had to relocate the ESC inside the plane and opened up the area behind the spinner for more air flow.

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  2 роки тому

      I hate when that happens!!! Sounds like Eflite also had this issue with their Timber Evo??? I never ran into overheating issues, but heard from a few guys out in hotter climates having issues...then Horizon Hobby put out a technical builtin about the mounting location too.
      It's always annoying when things need to be relocated....but glad you got it figured out!

    speaking as a beginner this was my first rc plane, I have the PNP version , without any stabilization........ I learned to fly on it this past summer, however I practiced a lot on the RF simulator before I flew this .....Arrows has done a very nice job with this plane and the quality is top notch ...after gaining a little more flying experience , I wish they offered a version that accepted both 3S and 4S batteries , as I do not want to have take it apart to replace the ESC......

      I bet she'd take a 4S without catching on fire ;) But I think she is powerful [enough], and I don't have any interest in 4S on this Bigfoot. Where I'd like to have more power is on EFD's...the little 50mm's do well on 4S and OKAY on 3S. I think the Bigfoot is a beauty, and flies amazing on 3S power...but to all their own ;)

    Guys I love your videos, my wife loves just listening to the lively commentary on your videos, and I’m not a UA-cam expert but if UA-cam penalizes you when people don’t watch the full videos, would it help if you broke them down to separate ones so we can save the build and set up parts for when we buy the plane? That way you’d get even more people watching your full videos without skipping parts.
    But the real problem I have with your videos is they always make me want to buy more airplanes! (Is that bad though?!?! :)

    Brian, I have heard you apologize in several recent videos that you were taking more time so that the ‘novice’ enthusiasts will better understand and actually see the many nuances of getting these airplanes to fly successfully. Please don’t change. If an experienced flyer is bored then he probably doesn’t need to watch your videos other than to get your evaluation. You do that at the beginning of each video so they have that information right away.
    I have just come back to the hobby 35 years later. I built balsa gassers where you got a thin sheet/template for you to cut each piece of the plane. We used tissue paper and dope to cover them. The electric and foam era is very different and offers an easy way to get into the hobby in a matter of hours - instead of weeks and months. Even with the experience I have, each of your videos gives me new ways to complete a multitude of assembly issues. So please don’t try and condense or eliminate the ways you produce each video. I watch every single one even if I’m not interested in the plane - I always learn and gain knowledge from each one.
    Thank you,

      Well Brian I wish I had listen to you and not flew the big horn for my first plane. Unfortunately I had it in the air in less than 5feet and I panicked ... tried to get it into safe but couldn't remember what switch I set it up on . So bout 300 feet took a spin dive and I really panicked bud. I'm done with the hobby cause what happened next. I think I was at full throttle trying to get safe on and it seemed like 70 or 90 mph into the ground bro .I have to say that really sucked . Most of all I'm not one to panic but this time I did so if anyone wants to buy some nice toothpicks in a green color I would like to sell them to buy a new rtf bigfoot due to the fact that I got really pissed at myself and threw my transmitter in the middle of the pond after the crash witch cost me another 400 bucks. I can't afford another nice raido to learn on. So I'm wanting a bigfoot rtf and do what you said to do bud I feel like a dumb ass for not listening to you. I really admire you and your wife and your channel but I'm not able to get another plane due to my job and family. I really need a fun hobby to keep me sober bro. Been clean and happy for 5 years but been feeling like well you know and can't do that to me and most important my family. So if you have any old rtf planes that you don't want. Please let me know and give me a affordable price IT would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time and advice in the past . Stay safe you and your family are good people .

    Brian,
    So in hooking up your wires that are real short, wouldn't it be easier to use 6 inch wire extensions on these to make it easier to manage

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  2 роки тому +1

      You can do this too, but shorter is lighter. Just keep in mind, if it's longer, there is more to deal with at the end of the build. I've done it both ways, and I kinda like less now, but I don't get into these planes and modify them as much as I used to. Now-a-days I just build them and fly them for content, and then a few times if I'm really lucky...but then we've got 3-5 planes screaming to get out of the box ;) It's a blessing and a curse, but I love to really get to know a plane, and when I do, I find them a lot easier to fly too. Something that goes largely un-noticed...we're flying most of these planes for the first or second time, sometimes 3-5th times for videos...and only very occasionally would I say I'm 100% comfortable with them.

      @BrianPhillipsRC  2 роки тому +1

      You just need an Receiver and the OTHER / New Transmitter...here's my recommendation, but bear in mind, this plane doesn't need an AS3X/SAFE equipped Rx, due to the Vector (stabilizer already in the plane)...so make sure you ask again on other models, if in doubt, and I can help you out.
      AR620 bit.ly/2QUlyCd (simple Rx) OR AR630 bit.ly/3lh5iqD (AS3X/SAFE Rx)
      Tx bit.ly/3f4JhZl - you want the NX8 - this will work for this and many more models as you continue to amass your fleet ;) I have something like 80+ models in there right now.

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  2 роки тому

      Gotta make a channel turn the thing on/off...use the "SBUS/Mode" plug and make an assignment to the channel on your transmitter you want to use...probably GEAR switch (ch 5) or AUX1 (ch6) then just make sure you know which way the switch moves to get the mode you want in each switch condition.
      Give it a shot. If you still can't work it out, watch our video on the 50mm EDF's from Arrows...we used the AR620 on them, but just less the rudder (BAE Hawk, T-33, Viper)

      Can you check the voltages of each cell? Do you have a voltage alarm... Voltage Alarm amzn.to/3mza2Z2 ...or an XBC Checker & Servo Tester bit.ly/3B8uity ??? If NOT, you can test the cells with a DMM (Digital Multi-meter)...which will tell you if your cells are at 4.2VDC each. Since the pack has 3 cells in series, you'll need to measure at the balance port, from the BLACK to the FIRST RED wire, then from the FIRST RED WIRE to the SECOND RED WIRE, then from the SECOND RED WIRE to the THIRD RED WIRE....each reading will be cell 1, cell 2, cell 3 voltage...and this is to be measuring from 3.00 to 3.30VDC (discharged) to no more than 4.20VDC (FULLY charged). If you're pack was OUTSIDE the normal range, it might not start charging. This could be what's going on, but I don't have enough information to tell you what to do. Check what I suggested, and get back with me, and I'll try to help you out...OR you can contact Hobbyzone.com - they are AMAZING for support!

      @BrianPhillipsRC  2 роки тому

      Do you have the VECTOR? If so, you can use the AR620 (much cheaper) and save the AR631 for your next basic plug and fly plane...
      Lights can plug into any spare channel, or you can use a "Y" Splitter to share the power from any other plug. You can sometimes plug them into the "BIND" plug too. All you're using is the red and black (power and ground) the signal isn't doing anything on the LED's - they're just a power circuit, so you won't interfere with the plug you "Share"...but just use an opened channel if you have it.
      Watch the radio setup to see where things plug in. You might need to watch a plane video where I use the AR631, since we shared this video as a RTF...
      Here's one...we recently did this plane, and you can watch the setup with an AR630 (Same as the AR61, only INTERNAL antenna and END PINS...otherwise same setup and wiring) - ua-cam.com/video/2GdA7516AJw/v-deo.html

      We kinda do...but it's not on our property. We want to put in a pond, but $25-50K price tag, and giving up the land are dissuading us from taking the plunge just quite yet.

    Question; what semi-budget 6 CH transmitter (or minimum channels required for the flaps) would you recommend I purchase to accompany the BigFoot? I'm not "planning" to buy any more RC planes as I write this, LOL. But who knows...
    I'm planning to make the purchase from you're link for the plane and gear. I understand I'll have to purchase (and install) a new receiver, batteries and charger?
    Thanks!

      I suspect you could do this. Might need to mount the Rx in a strange direction, if the control surfaces move in the wrong directions. MAKE SURE YOU CHECK and then RECHECK they all go the right direction from the sticks, AND FROM STABILIZER. If you miss this step, you will crash :(.....

    Hey Brian, love the channel! You and your co pilot have a great service to the public and I love your extensive and informative vids. I'm seeking advice on where I should check about legal areas to fly in parks in the Huntington Beach CA. Area I'm very interested in purchasing the bigfoot 1.3m for a trainer. Coming from a background in gliders in my early years, I just caught the bug for powered flight. Any advice would be awesome. Thank you and the ever present camera crew.
    William.

      Unlike our situation, with a large open and privately owned flying field, you may have to look for a CBO (Community Based Organization) usually the AMA, to find a sanctioned flying field. These sites allow for fully legal access to flying RC, but they will require following their rules and they will probably charge some membership dues and there may be some shared responsibilities as well. Not that any of that is a huge issue, it's part of the "knowbeforeyoufly.org" rules which are outlining the drone registry.
      P.S. I don't want you to hear this wrong, since it has NOTHING to do with you, and your totally fair and good quesiton, but we don't talk a lot about that here, as we whole hartedly think the drone registry is essentially evil, government over-reach, that should have never been allowed to happen. It's government at it's worst - squash the little guy to give the HUGE super-corporations a hand up. They don't need the help, and could make their UAS work without our compliance, especially for those of us who primarily fly fixed wing planes. I don't like to give credence to AMA for the way they rolled over and really left their members "out to dry". Not that they could have done anything about it, but I can say with 100% certainty, that FLITETEST (our fellow youtubers) have done more to protect our hobby then the AMA (at least of late...the AMA did tons for the hobby, but they're in bed with the federal government...and not with US).
      All that said, DRONES have been a very small problem the FAA has had to deal with, and flying around aircraft approaches, for example, is very dangerous....but to make kids flying RC planes follow a huge legal document to fly 2.5 miles to the SIDE of an airport, at sub 400 feet is just wasting real estate, and it's a joke.
      My opinion is not of value on this topic, since it's already on the books, but the RemoteID rules are also working now, and they have potential to kill the hobby, so if you want to be in it, get to it. It might not be what we enjoy in just a few short years. RemoteID will require essentially ADBS2 for RC planes...a transponder, among other things. The rules literally call for things that DON'T exist, and therefore it's total BS in my mind.
      Either way, I don't talk about it, unless to point out an aircraft that's "Sub 250grams" meaning, it's legal to fly outside of the drone registry.

    Hi Brian, I'm looking to get one of these but all UK retailers are currently out of stock of the one with vector stabilisation. They do have the non-vector plane as PNP, i.e. without gyro. If I were to purchase a non-vector one, do you know if I could install a Spektrum AR630 receiver and programme it to give me SAFE select and AS3X?

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  2 роки тому

      You can buy one as a PNP and use this instead of the AR620....
      With AS3X & SAFE...

      @@BrianPhillipsRC Brain, have had 4 or 5 flights with the plane now and am getting to like it. One of the chaps at the field today spotted that my prop was installed backwards! Turned it round and felt better but still a bit 'sluggish' through the air. I am using 2200mah, 3S, 35c batteries. Apparently it comes with a 11*7 prop but the profile of it looks quite 'flat'. Would I be able to swap for the next size up to hopefully generate a bit more thrust?

      They can break if crashed, but they're actually a bit TOUGHER than balsa planes, in my experience.
