    I can't tell you how much us RC flyers appreciate your U-Tube video's. You should be a teacher by profession, you are detailed and at the same time easy to understand. Your calmness and verbal lessons are well received and well done. Great job! I can't wait to fly my Valiant once I build mine which arrived yesterday.

    Maidened tonight! Flew it in low dual rate, didn't load the SAFE. It's been over 20 years since I've flown, so I kept it simple, but this thing is FAST. Managed to land in one piece, but came in way too fast, ran into the gravel, made another approach and landing attempt, had a fence reach up and snag the wheel and toss it to the ground - no damage though, 3rd time was a charm, but I still need to slow it down more.
    You're right, this thing flies beautifully. Looking forward to trying again when it's a little lighter out though. I flew right after the sun went down, my old eyes had trouble judging distances when coming it to land.

    Well this is what I went with for plane #2 otw. My other one is an Aeroscout and I love it. I'm getting more comfortable with the sticks everyday. No depending on safe anymore! Anyway, thanks for the work you and camera crew put in, God Bless Yall!

      Very nice! Glad you're making headway!!! Flying is HARD to learn, but WELL WORTH IT!!! Keep at it. This is a skill that can't be bought, and that's one of the reasons it's so dang appealing to me ;)
      Thanks for being here with us!

    Brian, I am watching your assembly video as I type, my Valiant finally arrived.
    Let me give a shout out to Hobby Horizons, I had received my radio I had ordered at the same time, over a week and a half ago - but no plane.....?
    Contacted them on their chat line, and they said something had happened in shipping and it had gotten held up. I'm old enough to know that 💩 happens, I ain't the Karen type, Michael, who was on chat support, said he'd take care of it, I received it the next day. Great service!
    Oh, and thanks for the advice on that XBC100 battery checker - got one of those too.
    Anyhooo.... I've got the landing gear on, appreciate the binding cord warning, and I was just starting on the elevator and rudder, just been checking, again, which screws are which - you're right, they do not have very good (none) instructions telling me which screw is which, so popped in to make sure.
    Back to the assembly!
    BTW, I used just a tiny dab of vasoline, just enough to give a shine on the first 6" of those rods - they slid right in smooth as silk.
    OK. All assembled now, now to watch your radio set-up.

      AWESOME! So glad we could help a tiny bit ;) Also, thanks for the shout out to Horizon Hobby - you're right, stuff happens, but they will help make it better - one of the main reasons we love working with them!

      @@BrianPhillipsRC Yeah, like I said, I'm old enough not to be a Karen about it, they took care of me.
      Unfortunately.... you lost me on the radio set-up. You had an 8 channel, I have a 6, and the very first thing you pulled up was creating your model.
      Ohhhhhhkaaaayyyy..I ain't got that function on my radio.
      And, to be really honest, I am TOTALLY lost trying to figure out all the bells and whistles in this thing!
      Dual rates. Exponentials. Coupling. 🤯
      I'll go through the manual (gasp!) and do the set-up as it shows in there.
      Thanks for your help.

    The Valiant is the best kept secret in the Horizon lineup. It has an near-symmetrical wing profile and almost no dihedral, which makes it extremely aerobatic. There are two weaknesses I saw in my Valiant:
    1) The tail seems very flexy to me. Some stiffening in both horizontal and especially the vertical would be helpful.
    2) Historically, the motor mounts have not been glued in well, and it will fail over time if you don't beef it up in the beginning (i.e. more glue/epoxy). If your Valiant starts getting noisy for no apparent reason, you can bet your motor mount is on the verge of letting go.
    Oh yeah, and watch the prop. It's big and there is scant little clearance with the relatively short landing gear struts. Prop strikes can occur easily and the prop is a bit different than most. If I was a new buyer, I'd be sure to order some extra props immediately.
    One more piece of advise: I wrap a nice, clean piece of clear packing tape around the leading edge of each wing (from tip to root). It really adds a measure of protection against inadvertent bumps. It will save you some dings in the leading edge.
    Other than these issues I find the Valiant to be a heck of a lot of fun.
    As always, thanks much for sharing.
    Steve

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  2 роки тому +2

      Yes! Only issue I've had with leading edge tape, is that if you use a thin tape, it can get a bit "Uglified" over time ;)
      Also, here's a trick - if you want to strengthen the wing...use TAPE along the top, prestress the wing (Hang it between two chair backs, and make the fuse heavy), and apply the tape, and it will HOLD as you unstress the wing (take the weight of the fuse) - works almost as good as a SPAR - Actually, it's pretty cool to see work ;) I did this on my ARCUS M, but it was just not quite enough on that plane. Same dilemma as above, it will get "uglified" eventually in the wrong conditions ;(

    • @kevincarter7102
      @kevincarter7102 2 роки тому +2

      Dang bro you are so right... my tail is flopping all over the place. And tonight doing touch and goes the whole nose piece just came unglued from the foam and was just hanging there propeller and everything.... I don't have multiple planes anymore because I usually only fly one at at time and I run 3 batteries a day on them. That being said they fall apart now before I crash them... I guess that is progress if your am optimist. I had my valiant for 3 weeks. 3 battery packs per day. She lasted 21 days... I will get out the medium 2 part epoxy and mix some fiberglass into it and put her together tomorrow. The whole battery tray came out already once on a rough landing and she patched right up. I think I might have to start looking into a balsa plane. I need more durability now that I am advancing...

    • @marcellowithtwols
      @marcellowithtwols 2 роки тому

      Agreed, I love my Valiant! Mighty capable and stable! You have to try really hard to wreck it. That being said, that beautiful blue paint WILL get nicked here and there. If anyone knows the correct touch up color, please let me know. Also, if you have an NX 6+ controller and a programmer cable, I highly recommend setting up CROW mode for your landing flaps. It will take your landings to the next level. It’s tricky to get it working tho, read my conversation with Brian Phillips above.

    Potential Buyers. I am possibly an intermediate pilot this is my third plane I owned over 1 meter. This thing is a super champ. Center of Gtavity gave me a hard time so I sliced the foam out of the back of the battery tray and shoved a 3 cell 3300mah 30c battery in halfway in there for 7 minutes of full throttle flight. And about 3-5 minutes of slow full flaps landing practice. This plane is fun fun fun. One of the only planes I've had that I can go from SAFE to AS3X without changing direction or flight path. Might be because I watch Brian's setup videos.. keep watching

    I came here after reading a comment in a buyer review, he suggested watching this video so I would know the correct screws to use and how to set up the plane.
    I am now afraid to even try flying it, and it hasn't even arrived yet!
    Put it this way... the last time I flew R/C I was flying jet style gliders off the cliffs in Palos Verdes. My Futaba 4 channel had a telescoping antennae about 48" long, and the receiver wire was about 36" long, and I had built a Bridi Flipper just to play around with when I didn't want to go up to PV.
    In fact, I have just built a Bridi Flipper from a set of plans - it's built, I just ain't covered it yet, have a (newer) Futaba 4 channel for it, and I bought this Valiant and a Spektrum 6 channel so I could get in the air again since I got the bug again.
    Then I watched the part about programming the radio..... (?) ..... and got totally lost.
    Maybe once it arrives and I can read the directions I'll understand it better.
    Wish me luck!

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  Місяць тому +1

      Don't get overwhelmed... it's a lot easier than what you were doing in the old Futaba days. It's hard the first couple times and then it gets easier. Just work through the entire build with us when you've got everything in hand. Don't be afraid to pause or slow down the video.
      You can do it! With your past experience, you'll be back in the air in no time.

    • @longbowshooter5291
      @longbowshooter5291 Місяць тому

      @@BrianPhillipsRC Thanks Brian. But, heck, the building part don't worry me none, I saw some comment on Horizon's page about some confusion on what screws to use, and he recommended this video. I'm still awaiting delivery, got the radio already, so I'll watch your video again once I'm ready to assemble it.
      My concern was the programming and menus and settings I would have to figure out with the radio.
      Hell, trying to learn about batteries, charging them, discharging them, storage voltage, charge rates, etc, etc, etc.....AAArrrrggghhh!
      That's why I liked glider - two channel, no motor, not batteries to worry about (other than the receiver battery), throw it and fly it!

    Great review as usual. I've used the V1 to recover some flying skill after a 12 year or so layoff and it's a great model. Of course as you get older you learn 10 or 12 years can't be recovered but it's fun anyway. The ESC in my V1 is strictly a no label, black shrink wrap only unit paired with the AR 636A. I think the newer ESC , or something else must have changed because the flight times you are getting are just crazy.
    My question has to do with the battery. In your original reviews you ended up liking the 3S 4000 smart battery. I've been using it because it seemed to add some beneficial mass (inertia) to the plane. For me it required a little bit of extra weight in the tail for the CG although it was more or less OK without it. But seeing how the V2 performs on 3S 2200 I'm rethinking the 4000. It does really make me think something is a little different in the power train. Any more insights?
    Of course like any learner, or re-learner plane, my V1 is getting really beat up. So I think it may be time to refresh with the V2.
    Sorry for the length of comment but I did get a Timber Evo after watching your Timber review. It is a great plane and my first thought was it flies like a big Valiant, not a bad thing. However, I notice that I am just getting 7 minutes on the recommended 4S 3200 smart packs and the ESC gets very hot to the touch. I've moved the ESC all the way forward per the safety bulletin Horizon put out on the heating problem. But still it seems to me it is not getting enough air flow from that small opening at the front of the rather small, tapering cowling. Also I think in real life those turbo exhausts are shaped to have external air flow lower the pressure drop across the exhaust to help reduce turbine back pressure (just a guess). In other words in this model those two scale exhausts (they are open) may be actually pulling a little air out which would mean shunting a little air flow from the path over the ESC. I'm thinking about taking a little scallop out of the bottom aft part of the cowl to get the pressure up a little ahead of the ESC. (I also wonder if plugging or popping out the exhausts wouldn't also help. They do pop right out.Have you or any of your many viewers noticed anything like this?
    Joe Gist

      I honestly can't recall recommending a 4000mAh for the Valiant (v1) but I'll take your word for it. I'd stick with 2200 3S, but only because I ride them till they're EMPTY - LOL ;)
      As for the cooling on the ESC in the Turbo Timber Evo...I've heard of issues people have had, but I've never had this issues myself...the builtin cam our AFTER we were done with our review and we had moved on to the next planes well before this came up. I would avoid over complicated solutions, but if you think cutting in holes to make the exhaust vents work better, that would be very cool!

      bprc.me/Draco - save this for later...it's like a museum piece, and flies great too, but wait till you can get her flying without a lot of new pilot mistakes...hangar rash will BREAK YOUR HEART on this beauty. Plus she's HEAVY!

Don't know if you field these so sorry if not the right place for it. I acquired a Valiant from my club - needed repairs and ultimater, a new fuselage. So obviuosly had to move the receiver over. All back together and ready to fly EXCEPT - the 6 channel functions all seem to work just fine. However, even though when I think I've bound it in SAFE mode (two twitches), neither SAFE nor AS2x work. The surfaces don't auto-react. I've thrown the question out to a couple sites and predominant response is throw it away. Like I said, it functions normally in all respects, just no SAFE and as a beginning power pilot, I'd like to have that. If you have any ideas or could point me in the right direction, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks again for your informative videos and all the work it must entail to create them.

If you disagree, no problem, just give them a shot and let me know if you have a good experience.

    Nice video (of course). You spoke to battery safety and I agree Spektrum is an outstanding battery. Curious... you have many many batteries and you keep them in your kitchen area. If one unfortunately caught fire (heavens forbid) it would do more harm in the living area of the house than in the basement or garage areas. Your thoughts as I keep mine (spektrum :) ) in the basement.

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  2 роки тому +1

      Where they're seen, they will be noticed. Where unseen, they will be missed. Better to see a problem and know how to respond than let a fire burn away for about 30 minutes or 1 hour before you realize it's going. That's how people get killed. My grandparents had a fire in their basement and thank God they were able to escape, but they did lose the house and lots of personal items. If the fire would have started in the kitchen, my Grandpa would have know about it.
      That's also to assume we'll have a fire, but I get what you're saying too... Just my 2 cent's. Don't want to make recommendations to people about this sort of life or death item, since I don't want to have that on my conscience if someone would ever get hurt in a fire.

    Hey Brian, were you able to set up CROW on the valiant? After moving the left aileron from the original Y cable to its own channel (ch 6), and changing the aircraft type to 2ail-1ele, I got crow to work in the flap system menu, but SAFE no longer works on the left aileron. Just the right aileron. So the right wing still tries to level the plane and stabilize, but not the left. Crow works just fine tho. I'm using an NX6, and the original receiver that came with the VALIANT V2. It does not have all those extra forward programming menus like on your other vid. I know I can unlock the programming on it if necessary. But, can SAFE work on the stock receiver/programming?

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  2 роки тому +1

      SAFE can still run this plane on ONE aileron, but the effect may appear to be muted, same is true for AS3X.
      If you want to REALLY make it work, you have to FACTORY RESET the AR631, then go all the way through setup as though it was a PNP plane.
      You MAY have to update firmware on the AR631 to do this, then the choice should be available from Forward Programming. Since I haven't done it myself, I say "Should"...sorry I can't speak from personal experience on this one.

    • @marcellowithtwols
      @marcellowithtwols 2 роки тому

      @@BrianPhillipsRC no worries! I had the programmer cable so I did the reset yesterday, and yes I had to upgrade(downgrade 1 version) to get it to kick off the factory reset. All worked well after re-learning the service configuration in forward programming. Thanks!

      The Valiant is a more "capable" plane, while the Cherokee is more detailed, scale looking, and flies so good slow, which I really enjoy. the Valiant, is more aerobatic capable, and will land in more a grass clearing then a runway, while the Cherokee will want a pretty decent runway to keep the nose gear in good shape.
