It may interest you to know that the pickups in the Les Paul Personal were made for Gibson by a company called "Dirty Works" who made the first active aftermarket pickups. They later changed their name to "Overlend" and produced pickups they called "Electo Magnetic Generators" (with "EMG" in large letters embossed across the molded covers) in 1983 they changed the name of the company from "Overlend" to "EMG"
As far as I can tell, the sounds for that three position tone swtich are as follows - 1st position; Lovely. 2nd position; Lovelier still. 3rd position; Yet more lovely.
Very much enjoyed your review of this new-to-me version of the Les Paul. I'd not discovered this model before tonight and greatly enjoyed and appreciated your very informative review and fantastic playing. Well done. Cheers.
That decade pot is what is missing on every guitar out there. Wow! Kind of like a passive parametric eq or "Q"/resonance kind of mix. This guitar sounds surreal. Your playing is stellar for the demo as well. Nice work bringing this to us! :)
Lovely - but I don't understand how come this sort of item end up in this place… for example I did not know that they have reliable electricity and wotnot. Don't get me wrong - it a good idea ect but what with the heat and moisture, you’d of thought things like music and houses were unusual.
Phenomenal video, Matt. This is one of the best sounding guitars I've ever heard and your playing does a lot to enhance that. Hope to see something new from you soon!
Such a good demo - I have the later version of this guitar, the Recording model - sounds very similar to my guitar. The decade control is special - most demos don't cover how subtly yet effective it is.
Forgot to mention here earlier that I picked up a ‘71 Les Paul Recording model last month, in large part due to this video. The Recording’s control layout is a little different than on this model, but the pickups and most electronics are the same. No mic input. :) The Decade knob is great for voicing the guitar with different amps and effects. Not too heavy (under 9 lbs.), plays super easy. So…thanks for drawing my attention to the “forgotten” LP models!
Nice one David - the recording has the high/low impedance switch right? I LOVE that Decade knob... Gibson should bring that back on their guitars... awesome guitar well done!
I just bought one. Sadly it's been heavily modded. But, for the price I had to pick it up. The history and it's still an amazing guitar neck and body. Play on.....
I had one of these I got rid of it because it was low impedance and you needed a Transformer on the cord and I had to drive it into an Ampeg SBT solid-state preamp to get enough gain to rock out with it to overdrive a tube amp it has very low output even with the Transformer. I traded it in for a 72 Les Paul Deluxe and I didn't like the treble pick up on that so I put a DiMarzio paf pickup in it. I no longer have either of these guitars and I really regret getting rid of the personal had the best neck of any guitar ever had!
Hi it doesnt have it installed instead the guitars came with a cable that converted the signal to high impedence if required. Or Gibson made a few low impedence amps.
Lovely, a "Les Paul" Les Paul. Read years ago that Les always preferred low impedance pickups on his guitars. Remember this one-reverb.com/news/reverb-experts-the-les-paul-signature Jack Cassidy,of Jefferson Airplane/Hot Tuna, had a bass version which is now known as the Epiphone Jack Cassidy. The lead guitarist from The Wallflowers played one, as well. That's a fascinating guitar, Matt. Bet you could spend the next month coaxing different sounds from it. Have fun. John
Hey thanks for that link! LP designed some cool guitars that fly under the radar. I'm fascinated by these low independence pickups - I didn't know the guy from the Wallflowers played one:)
Well here's a little secret I used my Fractal Audio AX8 for this video. There were a variety of stock amps used from that unit which are all modelled. I can't remember which ones sorry.
Hey Matt, I was re-watching some of your videos but was watching them through the larger flatscreen TV and when this video came on and you started playing I thought "Wow, that sound!" Rather than hearing it through a laptop this really gave me an appreciation of what this guitar sounds like. What amp were you playing through, your Vox?
jltrem computer speakers don’t do solo guitars any favours that’s for sure! I actually used my Fractal Audio AX8 for that video. Mainly on the Vox AC30 and Deluxe Reverb settings. Matt
@@TONEonline Were you using a Lo-Fi hi-fi transformer cable? I'm going to look at one today. the pickups concern me a little but I really like the tone that you're getting.

So cool to hear one in the flesh!
Hey Leon thanks for the kind words - it's a very special guitar that one:) Thanks for watching! Matt.
Terry Kath of Chicago played one... I owned a recording but a little to much going on with these guitars. Still it did have some very nice sounds ....

Great video Matt, the guitar sounds really great! #🔎🔈
Thanks it's a really lovely and interesting guitar!
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE ❤️ LOVE ❤️ LOVE ❤️ LOVE THIS VIDEO....

Amazing video of a very rare bird, often mistaken for a Recording. The Terry Kath Les Paul.

I did a headstock repair on one back in 1979. Have never seen another since then.

Yes, and the LP Recording model also has a phase switch that interacts in a cool way with the Decade control.

nice demo... how about doing a Les Paul Professional? demo
The original came with an inline impedence matcher. Without it you get no gain. Wonder if this one had it installed in the electronics cavity?

Don't know if you've ever seen this.

Any word on the amp used to shoot this video? It played a big role.

Wow, such weird yet cool guitar
Thanks Edu - I agree it's a very cool guitar:)
Man I need to know what some of these riffs are
