Haha i never thought about that while watching but that is a great point. You’d probably never guess these two were sketch comedy legends of their respective prime eras if you only saw season 6 of BCS.
It's telling that at his lowliest, in his most despicable moment, one step away from doing something completely unforgivable, Jimmy looks the most like Walt.
4:14 "I trusted you" Marion is possibly the first person to see Jimmy as a good, honest guy with good intentions rather than a scummy sleazebag since Kim left him, and Gene took advantage of the one person who ever gave him a chance in years. You can almost see in Odenkirk's acting how much that realization shatters him. What a wonderful series.
I didn't really think of it this way, but Gene was, at least to Marion, an honest and kind man who helped her in spite of his own issues. It wasn't a lot, but it's clear that Marion didn't have a lot of people in her life outside of her son, so Gene being so kind in spite of her prickly exterior only to betray that one bit of trust she had is... well it's unfair on her. It also kinda shows that Gene/Saul/Jimmy kind of squandered his new life in Omaha. He was given a good chance to change his path and make friends (not only with Marion but with the guy with cancer in the bar), but he just drowned in his own resentment and regrets to the point of trying to relive them with his scams and schemes. Hell, he was presented a similar opportunity with Buddy and Jeff even in spite of their potentially toxic first interaction. He could've still had a sort of life as Saul with them, but instead chose to scam them to keep them quiet.
I can quite possibly almost see your point. Lemme try: Marion is quite possibly the most gullible person on the show and you can almost see in Odenkirk's acting the realization that her small fish status wouldnt give his character any thrill.
Such an insanely smart move from the writers to use the tension of what being in the present tense of this world meant. For so much of the show we were in the past, and could make whatever guesses, then we'd go back to the 'future' when we saw Gene, but now? This is the present, this is it. All bets are off. Jimmy could've killed her and we had no real way of knowing whether he would until this very moment. If anything they were building the tension in this scene for the whole show; that question of what happens to Gene? and what becomes of him.
The life alert alarm has such a chilling energy about it, like the emergency broadcast alarm...that sound was the threshold being breached, marking the end of Saul Goodman.
So many opportunities for Saul to have actual, genuine connections and make real friends. His need for the thrill of getting away with it always ruins any chance of keeping people around. I felt so bad for Marion.
The shot of Saul looking at his commercial with a sad face showing the only happiness he ever had in his life was being a lawyer is well shot. How better call Saul did not win an award is beyond recognition
Considering what he did to Irene, I think this is kinda poetic justice. Also them using the first ad we saw for him, icing on the cake. Last thing, immense respect to Carol Burnett for doing this when she was almost 90. Not just for being such a fan of the breaking bad universe, for being a legend in her own right. Go back and watch her skits from her show. Absolutely hilarious.
As horrid as this is to say, Jimmy is truly a better man than Walt ever was….. he would’ve strangled Marion without hesitation if he were in this situation!
We see Jimmy sing three times in the series: the first it seems he is a bad singer in order for Chuck to join in and correct him, and have a good time. The second time, seems to be like he is a bad singer in order to look more gullible to the guy at the bar as Gene. The third time here, we see the truth, which is that he’s just a bad singer
I loved Breaking Bad, but Better Call Saul really got to me on an emotional level that no other show ever has. You were rooting for Jimmy the whole time, but you knew that he was still a criminal and at some point he had to pay the piper.
2:30 there’s such a look of hurt and betrayal written all over her face finding out a man she befriended and trusted is not only a conman but criminal fugitive. Carol Burnetts acting is so on point!
My favorite scene in all of BB BCS universe. Undone by a 90 year old woman because your hubris got the better of you and you had to drag them into your mall scheme. Knowing the internet was proliferating and the places he could hide were rapidly diminishing.
I do. I think Bob Odekirk could pull off a role like that. He's always been a comedian, then a criminal, an action hero, he's worked with Steven Spielberg and Greta Gerwig. He could pull off a slasher horror movie I think.
Gale gave Walt a simple book…. led to his end. Jeff gave Marion a simple computer….. led to Saul’s end. Lalo gave Hector a simple bell….. led to Gus’ end. The simplest things can lead to the biggest consequences.
This was the one thing I called in the entire show. I knew that was going to be his downfall- literally a 5 second web search and he was compromised, lmao.
Then again, what are the odds that a runaway criminal from Albuquerque, New Mexico, encounter a cab driver who was also from Albuquerque before moving to Nebraska? Jimmy literally won the unlucky lottery…
I bet that a great many folks who watched this did not know much about the great Carol Burnett. It is terrific that she played this role and enjoyed popularity again. And, the character was quite a departure for her!
I like how the operator doesn’t question Marion and does automatically call the police. Like she could’ve said are you sure it’s a criminal and it’s Saul Goodman, wanted man?
Yeah, when Jimmy negotiates the sweetheart deal but then confesses in court in front of Kim, deliberately messing his deal up is such a powerful way to end his arc. From 7 years to basically a life sentence, but he gets his soul back. Amazing show. Amazing acting. ❤
This is false. The last thing Jimmy does is bring healing to Kim and some sense of closure, however small, to Marie. In the end Kim's faith in him redeemed him.
