      My golf was the best car I’ve owned to this point, I think I’d go TDI or GTI if I got another one. I had a golf city just cause it was cheap and I didn’t have a lot of funds at the time of buying it. Would love to get another

      Jordan Sass had a Jetta 2.5 last year of true IRS, then the trailing arm was the next model rear suspension. That car had everything in exactly the right place. Couldn't afford the Wolfsburg edition but loved the car. Even though it was made in Mexico it was a great car as well. Good luck with the winter, doing the same in the north east states, lil snow is a blast a lot is a pain

    Thanks for your help Dean. I have an E46 with 26X,XXXmi I've had for 6 years and put 140,000 miles on, just purchased and X5 with a N52 and 167,XXX miles. I'm going through it. and needed a list of things to check. Between you and Nathan, I feel confident I can get this beast back to snuff.
    Just did the OFHG and OFcooling gasket.
    Vanos Solenoids, Thrust arms and end links scheduled to arrive today. Had to do the wiper fluid pump last week.
    Disa and CCV is next.

    I bought a 200k mile 325i manual and videos like this have kept it a happy machine. I lost the water pump once in a dramatic explosion of steam. Fixed it for 150$ amazon replacement and a 10$ metal hose flange to replace the original chocolate hose flange.

    Thanks for the video - useful information. I have changed everything you have identified except the disser valve. However I waited until I got codes or other faults. I only replaced one coil not the hole set. A new coil on one cylinder does not put extra load on old coils as they are completely independent of each other. The only additional item I had to replace was the starter motor. Sold the car with 320,000 kms. The new owner has the full history of the items replaced. PS - changing the water pump and thermostat requires the coolant to be replaced and should be the only time anyone needs to touch the coolant.

    Just picked up a 2008 125i cabriolet manual with the N52 with 104,000 miles and it’s got an oil leak dripping oil near exhaust manifold, I’m going to order the replacement and new bolts this weekend. Paid £3400 for her and don’t mind paying to bring the engine and components as close to new as possible. I’ve had DSG golfs and stuff in the past and I really have a soft spot for the configuration of this little car N/A 6 cylinder, 6 speed manual, RWD, Coupe. this is now unheard of!

    Thanks for the part on the valve cover bolts. My records show the valve cover gasket was done ~20k miles ago, but I just found a leak and a couple of the bolts could be turned by hand!? I had just changed the CCV system and it was crap. So either they torqued em wrong on install, or they were loosened from the increased pressure like you said. Once again you clear up a strange situation.

      if your o2 sensors are failing on a N52 engine you have big problems mines on 160k on original sensors with no issues I would change your fuel grade and run shell v power 101

    I disagree about the temperature gauge. They could easily include one set to the appropriate temperature range of the engine. Ie hot for hotter than normal. A gauge gives you warning of a temp increase before it's critical

    Excellent information. I got 220,000 miles on my 08 528i and have already gone through the valve cover gasket, spark plugs. Football gasket, eccentric sensor, oil filter case gasket, expansion tank, battery and vanos solenoids. Im getting ready to order new vanos solenoids again 4 years later. The waterpump still has a strong jet of coolant at the expansion tank.
    Are the motor mounts a bad failing point for these cars?
    My 528i makes a sound right at the start only and dont know how to trouble shoot it. I know my sister is having her motor mounts on her 07 328i replaced due to a rear end collission. As soon as she got hit, her cars started vibrating like crazy. Just like I thought, it was the motor mounts.
    Keep up the good work and thanks in advance.

    Engine runs GREAT ! I had Mom appointment for her to look at a Subaru... They had sent it out for detailing and pulled the gold onto the screen. Mom said , " I want it, I'm tired of looking. For $11,000, Mom got the E60 N52 528i 2009 (or 08 * lol * ) - 88k miles - in May '22. I asked sales rep to pop hood after test ride (10 miles maybe) ( with a weird disturbance mid run). Residue all over, but not thick black... Just moistened , so I asked what was leaking... "Oh nothing, probably last guy to oil change spilled a little..." After home a month, total brake and rotors, then top front coolant hose connector (one of many things readily emitting residues). So then oil cooler filter housing gasket change and pulleys belt and tensioner, valve cover gasket.... But a vibrating was irritating to Mom ... I re-lubed/replaced caliper pins, no fix... Then recalled for pcv valve tube change... They told me needed rotors ... The ATE's I got for it weren't quality enough .... BMW's rotors next great, but pinhole steering fluid leak low pressure and old intake clamp inches from steering pump pulley made belt jump and shredded everywhere... ugh....a piece melting belt clabbered on the water pump bolts and melted up the rubber washers.... NEXT....

    I've done the OFHG so many times at this point, there's really no issue doing it as needed whenever they do start leaking. E60 with about 50k since the last OFHG and oil cooler gasket replacement and its already starting to show major signs of leaking again on to the belts and the hoses. Thanks for the video!

    • @BMWDoctor
      @BMWDoctor  4 роки тому +1

      Bywall that only happens when you use cheap gaskets and not original bmw ones because I can tell you now mine ain’t leaked again and neither has anyone else’s stop using the cheap crap offline and go to bmw and buy it £35 for both gaskets

    • @thebywall
      @thebywall 4 роки тому

      Bmw Doctor I’ve used Victor Reinz/Elring/Ajusa brand gaskets my whole life. I’ve even tried to source the newer viton rubber gaskets but at this point it almost seems like a design flaw. I feel as a result of running so hot, the gaskets on the N54 and N52 start to leak again and and again over time

    • @thebywall
      @thebywall 4 роки тому

      Also interesting to note that my e90 which has the N52 OFHG without any oil cooler is also showing signs of leaking at 80k, but this is likely still the original gasket from 2010.

    • @BMWDoctor
      @BMWDoctor  4 роки тому +2

      Bywall mate impossible in trying you that now you either ain’t doing the gaskets correct or you ain’t cleaning the area before fitting and there not sealing correctly I have done this ONCE on my car since ownership and have had no issues I also did this many many times on previous N52 for other owners who are on here and they ain’t complaining so mate you must not be doing it right
      If I was you mate take it to a garage and have them do it PROPERLY

      @@BMWDoctor Please allowed me to put you a question; I own an 2006 E90 325i with N52 engine and about 120.000km; I have it since 3 years ago. The engine runs smooth, no major issues while running. Excepting a little bit higher oil consumption, about 1l at 2000km. But the main issue would be the idle when the engine is cold(more than 8 hours). And this happens only when it's warm outside in the hot seasons; no issue in the cold season. After starting the engine, for about 5 to 10 seconds, the idle could be a little bit unstable but after that time, everything is ok. But sometimes, the idle just drops bellow suddenly and the engine just stops. After I start it again, no more issues, the idle is stable. Please advice what could be the problem. The ignition coils and spark plugs have been changed two years ago at a BMW dealer. At low rpms, I do not feel lack of power( caused by potential vanos solenoids issue).I never had the check engine shown in the dashboard.

The valve cover had to be replaced because the CCV is built into it, at 175K. What a stupid design that is. At the current time I periodically get an oil burning smell, but no drips are visible on the car or the garage floor. Any ideas?

    They could have put a temperature gauge on the cars. All they had to do was to design the gauge to read normal unless the temperature is out of tolerate according to water pump operation thermostat operation and the coolant temperature itself. All my cars the temperature gauge sits exactly in one spot no matter what. However outside of that parameter it will show a higher reading. You are right I was thinking since the electrical water pump and thermostat came on BMW's they took the coolant gauge off at the same time. So it makes sense.

I just picked up a 2010 x3 and .. man... ??.. yeah..didn't know nothing about bimmers and watching your video gives me some ease at what I NEED to know as it didn't start when I got it and now it does... but lack of power when acceleration so still trouble shooting

    Thanks for the video! In addition to the tensioner, idler pulley and belt, do you recommend changing the crankshaft pulley/harmonic balancer after oil leaks have been fixed? My understanding is that the rubber in the pulley/balancer can deteriorate after being soaked in oil for a while. Could this part failing be the cause of increased engine vibration at idle? Should you change just the pulley (removing 6 small bolts only) or the pulley plus the backing sleeve thing that is held on with the single bolt? I'm concerned about messing with the timing by removing the whole part with the single bolt.

    The best upgrade on my 2011 X3 with 100k somewhat problem free miles was trading it for a Lexus.... these 9 problems, and several other more was the final straw on a long list of things that cost way more than the car was worth to fix. I also have a 2013 328i F30, with 143k miles on the 4 banger...zero problems, but its not worth two dollars so I just tool around with it until the engine has a catastrophic failure....

      Interesting, yeah I have heard that the 328I F 30 is pretty reliable even though it’s forced induction, I am so torn because I love the Bangle era E 60 and I’ve always wanted one, was thinking about getting one as second car but I am also considering a A6 3.2 which is supposedly quite reliable actually. However I do love the F10 five series as well and a 528 I would probably be a reliable right, Of course with a thorough inspection and proper maintenance history

    So when I get a used e91 wagon here shortly. Basically just replace all these things or should I risk it and run the car as is for a short time first?... And if needing to replace all these it wouldn't make sense to pay big dollar on the car just cause it has 70k or less on the clock. When could just pay a lot less for a car with 100k plus on the clock. And use part of the savings to do a bunch of this work yourself possibly. While getting to know the car more when working on it.

    Hi I have a BMW 325i with the n52 engine I'm getting a 2d0f air mass metre code. when you start the car on a cold start and you press on the brake pedal the RPMs go up and down between 600 to 1000 once the car is warmed up pressing the brake does not effect the rpm also the car doesn't want to start in temperature bellow -5 Wich I assume is because of the the code

    Around 100k is when you need to replace the expansion tank, those almost have the exact life span of 100k. It is hell trying to get it seated right, and if yours goes, it sprays everywhere and possible shorts the fan, and a few electric components.
    Is it also true to replace transmission fluid around 100k, and BMW Lifetime oil generally refers to 100k?

    • @bryanbielka6770
      @bryanbielka6770 3 роки тому

    6. Water pump and the thermostat
    a. Replace these. You do not need to change the coolant.
    b. Don’t worry about the warm temperature if the car is not overheating.
    c. Costs about $50 - $120
    Not sure where you're getting your water pump. They're over $600 here
