  • Overlanding The Central Kalahari Episode 1
    An adventure travel trip before the madness, in a time when adventurers could travel freely. This was an adventure where 4 South African UA-camrs come together and enjoy a bucket list trip into the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, Botswana. This trip has always been something I have wanted to do, and what a privilege to do it with good mates.
    This was 14 day trip, in the month of March 2020, 11th to the 22nd, travelling from South Africa, into Botswana, all the way up to the Northern part of the CKGR where we enter the wilderness reserve at Matswere Gate, and travel the full length down to exit at Khutse game reserve. This episode sums up the first 6 days in the CKGR, and it comes as no surprise, that we were in our element. The CKGR is just magic this time of the year. We stayed 3 nights at Kori Campsite, and 3 nights at Sunday Pan campsite.
    Stay tuned for episode 2, as we leave Sunday Pan campsite, and begin the long drive down the entire CKGR, staying at Letihau campsite 1 night, Xade campsite 1 night, Bape campsite 1 night, and Malose camp 1 night, and we end our CKGR adventure at Khutse campsite 2 nights.
    Thank you Ed and Chris for shared footage, and to Rolland for what was surely an epic trip. Awesome travels and adventures chaps.

      Thank you and glad you enjoyed this one. The Ranger handled well out there, but as to be expected when doing a trip of this scale, there were issues with some of the setup - the DC to DC battled on this one, a it was under powered to run the 2 fridges. Live and learn to make a plan. Keep well.

We have done so for the show, and whilst it might make overlanding somewhat easier, and more prepared, you only need ground tent, water and fridge. Maybe awning for possible rains. The bigger trips, yes, self sufficiency is definitely needed. Hope your adventures happen soonest 🤙

He is bleak, and if you are adventurous in heart, we all feeling it. Bit of cabin fever here as a result of lockdown, but we have had 3 weeks of relaxed lockdown, so able to move around somewhat. However, we might go back into stricter levels as a result of COVID positives being so high. Bummer. Well guys, sad to hear you missed what surely would have been a special trip, at least you have it for next year. Keep well, stay safe and only too happy to keep you awesome through our adventures. Hey Graham, thanks mate and much appreciated. It's a tough one. I think you just need to start. Filming and capturing any adventure is how I started. As long as you tell a story, create interest then the rest will happen. It's an expensive game, so, I had to start local. Doing the big trips costs allot of money out of our own pockets. Hence, we can only do 2 or 3 a year. Figure out what, where and how you want to travel, line it up, save, and make it happen. Hope this helps, but remember, it isn't easy, and there are allot of sacrifices, family and financial.

    • @4x4ventures_southafrica
      @4x4ventures_southafrica  3 роки тому

      Hi Ray, thanks for the comment. I'm running 2 X 100amp hr AGM DC batteries in parallel ("one big battery") with a RING 30 Amp DC smart power management unit. It allows for solar input for DC's to charge and gives battery level readout. The Ring unit is also connected to startup battery for charge on the move, and switches off when vehicle not running. I also have 1000W trailblazer non pure sinewave inverter connected to ring unit to charge camera gear etc. Happy with the setup, but, in the future and one day when finance is right, I will swap out the AGM DC batteries with either 2 Lithium 120amp batteries or one 200 amp lithium battery for 2 fridges, charging of gear and Bluetooth integration on phone. Lithium has 5-7 year warranty and a lifespan of 10 years as opposed to the minimum 3 years with AGM. Also, would like to upgrade from the RING unit to either CYTEK or Redarc power management system, only because the RING unit is a slow charger to the DC batteries, and doesn't have AC power option when parked up for longer periods of time at home. For now though, it is a solid setup, just not optimised for the kind of longer trips I do. Good luck and hope this helps you 🤙

      @@4x4ventures_southafrica Awsome!! I'm also running 2 fridges, and a 200ah lead crystal battery, and national luna NLDC-25 dcdc charger. I found that 2 fridges is a bit much is stationary for a long period of time, and the weather don't allow for perfect solar charge. Would love to do Lithium, but as you stated, cost per ah is still high. Thanx for the reply!! Maby a good idea to do a electrical setup video for the future!!! Would love to check it out

    • @4x4ventures_southafrica
      @4x4ventures_southafrica  3 роки тому

      Thanks Ray, yes, solar is great but only if weather permitting. Look, Chris has just put lithium in on his trailer and the results are phenomenal. Charging a lithium is fantastically fast and power utilisation is really something to see. I was very very impressed with how it made his trip less worrisome. Ed and I were constantly nervous, especially when there was no sun. I have so much content to go through and edit, so hang in there. Here's a quick question if I may. Would you be happy to watch an hour long episode, or do you think shorter is better? Do you think your opinion would fall under a general opinion of the subscribers to be okay to watch longer episodes? My limpopo overlanding adventure episode is a monster and thinking of cutting one long episode. Thanks for the help

      Hey Sherwin. Thank you for your support 🙌 I have the 2.2 Manual. A bit underpowered when under full load. You do feel it, and especially when towing. No problems otherwise. Strong little motor, and even when towing, she gets through the thick stuff.

      @Hungry4PIPS 4 роки тому +2

      @4x4ventures Hi Ryan🙋🏽‍♂️, yeah there are truly strong, I constantly tow cherry pickers for work incl tools in the back and yes she goes perfectly, however its a supercab and planning to upgrade to a DC auto 4x4, just deciding between the 2.2 or 3.2. I'm thinking 2.2 XL and use the difference in money for kitting it up 😀

    • @4x4ventures_southafrica
      @4x4ventures_southafrica  4 роки тому

      Good move, make it your own. Why not manual? It is a good option, and without being too otherwise, heard the autos transmission case can be a problem on both 2.2 and 3.2. Personally enjoy manual as I get to feel and control the shifts. Good luck bud, and enjoy. Hope to see you out there. P.S. If you going to be towing, a 3.2 might be better. Less sluggish.

      Hi Nicholas, thanks so much mate, and yes, a fantastic trip indeed. The short answer is, vinyl wrap. Costs a bomb, but saves the paint. Only down side is, you end up damaging the vinyl wrap. I reckon I will get 2 to 3 solid years off of this vinyl wrap from Wrap Vehicle SA. Hope this helps mate 🤙

    Hi 4x4venture, I am having a trip to CKGR end of this year. so is it possible to go there with a stock standard Tyre of Toyota Hilux or do i have to get a proper 4X4 Tyres.

    • @4x4ventures_southafrica
      @4x4ventures_southafrica  3 роки тому +2

      Yes, anything is possible. But, do you have confidence with standard tyres. I've seen a KO2 tyre get caught in a stump and as a result, flat tyre. I would be very very cautious with standard tyres. Dodge the stumps very well. My preference is however a very strong and robust tyre. All terrain or muds, something with strong sidewalls. Goodwick and enjoy the adventure

    Out of curiosity, how do you change a flat tire on sand? That sand looks so soft and clayish, sure the jerk will sink

    • @4x4ventures_southafrica

    One more question is: what Tyre pressure on a fully loaded Conqueror Compact 2 Offroad Trailer especially with its 110l capacity of water when reaching the dirt roads of CKGR and also what Tyre pressure on the bakkie?

    • @4x4ventures_southafrica
      @4x4ventures_southafrica  3 роки тому

      With a fully loaded trailer on tar I set tyre pressure to 2.4 bar. On dirt, fully loaded I drop to 1.8 bar. Take it easy when travelling with a fully loaded trailer. It's not all about tyres and suspension, all of the time. 8 times out of 10, its about common sense when driving thick sand. Momentum, good steering, gear shifts, and tyre pressure will always win a tough obstacle.
