- Gotham is such an outstanding show if you can get past it's first season. It's arguably the one superhero show that doesn't try to be your typical superhero show and that's kind of why it's one of my favorite DC Comics based TV shows. On top of that, it has one of the best Jokers ever put on screen for a live action Batman related piece of media. So why not make a video about it and try to sell people on watching Gotham in 2021? Yep! It does a fantastic job at also showing those repercussions over time and making the smallest actions or bad decisions come back to a character in the future. Nothing is meaningless in Gotham
Ben McKenzie Is probably the definitive Jim Gordon for me, he acts the role perfectly in every single aspect of James Gordon’s life.
YES, this Show made me love Gordon a lot more and he became a much more interesting Character for me than just being the guy that "presses the Bat-Signal Button".
I would even call him Gotham's White Knight
i don't understand why so many people dislike the first season . yes it starts a little bit slow but it cathes on after the first half .yes it isn't the mad gotham we know but its good and i love the penguin's storyline and rise of power in season 1
I think the core reason people have a problem with the first season is due to the fact that we've had so many modern superhero shows that tell stories in a quicker fashion now. Instead of laying down the groundwork and fleshing out the entire show within one season like Gotham does, most shows just use the first episode to flesh out a show and continuously build the momentum episode by episode (such as Daredevil, the MCU shows on Disney+ and so on). So, for a lot of people, it's hard for them to watch Gotham's first season because there's so much setup in a slower pace than they're used to (which is purposely done so people can see the payoff in the later season) that it's hard for them to get through it. I agree with your sentiment though!
@@IDontBeatGames I agree .I also think it is better if things fold in a slower pace so that we get to see more of every character . In this way there is more tension and anticipation and the payoff is really worth it
@@dimitristheocharis2487 I think the pacing is perfect for the story that Gotham tries to tell (and I'm diving into this in a longer video I'm working on regarding Gotham!) but I do understand when people say they can't enjoy the first season since it is the slowest season of the show. Everything ramps quickly and the pacing highly picks up in the later season (especially starting the 3rd season) but the the longterm tension build up works perfectly considering so much is happening with the many different storylines that can effect the bigger picture of the overall Gotham story
I have no opinion but I don't get it either. One of my friends thinks it's the only season they liked.
I agree with this. I actually love the mob world and how they introduce all of the criminals. Is it slower? Of course. But I still enjoy it. Better than that final season we got
Monaghan’s Joker easily became my favorite once I saw him. If he can get praise from Mark Hamill, the voice of the Joker himself, then you know he’s doing something right. DC needs to bring him back.
Absolutely agreed - in fact, I think he was better than Jared Leto's Joker iteration... which isn't saying much but still!!
I feel like he'd be even better if he had the focus just on him, or at least more focus on him. It was constantly switching to other people during the show, I'm sure a focus on him would make a killer performance not like he hasn't done that already.

The Penguin and The Riddler where highlights of the show. The Penguin was an outstanding villain and you find yourself rooting for him even sometimes.
Yeah for real. Before watching Gotham I and most other people found penguin to be one of the more forgettable Batman villains but he absolutely steals the show in Gotham. It’s kind of insane how many Batman villain have by far their best on screen versions in this show

My favorite part of this show is that it sets up the appearance of Batman as inevitable. Through the show we follow Jim Gordon as he tires to fix things up in Gotham only for things get much worse.
I love that the main character isn't Jim, Oswald , Bruce or Alfred the main character IS Gotham

I just finished this show for the first time this week and it's such an amazing show. Everyone goes into it with a Comic book mind and pick it apart and find all the flaws in the show.
I went into it without thinking of the comics and went into it with a clean mind.

Only a true Batman fan would forget about the comics when watching this. I don't think you really thought that one through, but well done for not being that much of a Batman fan and liking a TV series anyway. It somehow makes you better than people that liked Batman from the comics first. Not really, though, you sound no different from a Star Trek Discovery fan.

I watched Gotham back when it first came out and started rewatching it a couple weeks back, one of my favorite shows honestly
i love this show it turned gotham into a real city with its bright spots and its dark corners. the origins of the villains worked oswald edward Jerome jeramiah. some didnt hhhhmmm bane but for the most part it was great i have to give a shout out to victor zsasz though this for me is the definitive version of the character he is creepy funny and he just steals every scene hes in i hope they change the comic version to the gotham version because its brilliant.
I absolutely agree with pretty much everything you've said. It feels believable because of so many reasons and it's easily the best (or at least my favorite) iteration of a "realistic Gotham". There's ups, downs, action packed sequences, entertaining fights, tough growth for some characters and it all comes together for a near masterpiece of work

The First season wasn't bad at all in my opinion. It was a Film Noir Mob Crime Drama which I fuck with. I love Jada's portrayal of Fish Mooney and I know she herself had a lot of fun on set just as the rest of the cast. The first season might have started off weak for others but it does get better and better
I fuck with the first season as well but like I said, I know a lot of people dislike it because the first season spends so much time delicately setting up the rest of the seasons (which has a massive payoff). And honestly, I think if the first season was any different, the show might've not been as good as it is overall
I fell in love with the show the second I saw that trailer dropped and knew it was going to be something special. The first season really did a brave thing by taking its sweet ass time, making sure people are accustomed to these characters, their quirks, names, relationships, etc. Everything isn't thrown right into our faces as soon as the gate's open and I know it was hard for a lot of people to sit through thanks to them wanting to see Batman, but obviously not getting him and his action scenes. I love everything about this series and still go back to it when it rains and when I want to watch some decent Batman content.
I was super angry, when Gotham was canceled.
That rushed 5th season, half just. What a shame. WB MUST re-new it. It's just too good to have just 4,5 seasons.

Right here bro my second favorite show after Smallville
Gotham is my favorite TV show, period. Personally, I don't understand the way people talk down about season 1. Sure, it's not the strongest season, but I wouldn't call it the weakest either. I'm currently re-watching the show. I'm only on episode 3 but I'm already noticing details that are making me love season 1 even more. There's little moments that show that they didn't even plan the show one season at a time, but instead knew everything that was going to happen in the entire show before they started filming. An example would be the scene towards the end of the pilot when Falcone and Jim talk for the first time. Read closely.
"It's good to meet you at last, James. I knew your father very well. The best DA this city ever had. He and I understood each other. There was respect. Friendship, even."
"Friendship?"
"Trust me, that's the only reason you're alive now. Blood doesn't lie. I know that when you leave here, you'll do the right thing."
"I will. I'll tell what I know."
"Which is what?"
"I know that you own the police department, probably the mayor too. And I was pretty sure that you had the Waynes killed. But if you did, you wouldn't risk letting me live, would you? Then again, how did Fish Mooney come to have Martha Wayne's necklace? A replica?"
"Yes."
"But if you didn't have them killed, why frame Mario Pepper? Or are you covering up for somebody else?"
"Who knows who killed the Waynes. Some lowlife. We needed a culprit before the funeral. Pepper was sacrificed so that the people of Gotham would see swift justice done. So they can feel safe and secure."
"And that matters so much to you."
"Of course. I'm a business man. You can't have organized crime without law and order. I love this city, and I see it going to hell. But I won't let it fall apart without a fight."
"You make a life of crime sound very noble."
"You have a hard head, James, just like your father. Don't be self-righteous. Don't be arrogant."
"You want me to keep quiet about all this."
"Gotham is on a knife edge. What do you suppose bringing down city hall and the police force will do? Even if you could. Would it make things better? (Speaks in Italian. I don't speak Italian, I don't know what he said.)"
This conversation sets up season 3. In season 3 we learn that Carmine and Jim's father were both apart of the Court of Owls, building on this friendship Carmine speaks of here. When Jim is telling Carmine what he knows, he says,
"But if you didn't have them killed, why frame Mario Pepper? Or are you covering up for someone else?"
At first this sounds like a throwaway line, or one of the many ideas Jim throws around that may or may not be true. No. In season 3 we learn that Carmine was covering up for someone, the Court of Owls. Even earlier on in this episode, Jim throws out the idea of a contract killer in an even more throwaway line, then in season 2, we discover the killer is Matches Malone, a contract killer hired by the Court of Owls. Another example would be the very next scene, as Jim is walking Oswald along the pier. Listen to what Oswald says.
"Please, Mr. Gordon, just let me live. I'll do whatever you say, I'll be your slave for life. Listen to me, there's a war coming, a terrible war. Falcone is losing his grip, and his rivals are hungry. There will be chaos, rivers of blood in the street, I know it. I can see it coming."
Season one of Gotham ends with a gang war, many are killed, Falcone retires, Fish is killed (I'll admit I can't remember what happens with Maroni) and Penguin comes out on top. Penguin has known this war was coming since the beginning of the show which is why he wins, because he's been preparing this whole time, playing all the sides, creating unease and discord between the family, in an attempt to ignite this war and push out the old top dogs. On top of that, this prediction by Penguin could even be applied to season 5, when Gotham is abandoned and the city is split up into different territory, and it's a non stop war for months.
On top of this, the writing is just incredible. One of the things I've seen some people complain about is that most of season one is just random case of the week episodes, but that's just not true. If you pay attention, every one of these cases relates back to the main story and helps to advance the plot. Episode 2 with the child snatchers is so that we can get Selina involved with Gordon and Bruce, while at the same setting up the Dollmaker later in the season and Fish's arc. Episode 3 opens up our eyes and the police's eyes to the fact that it's not just Jim anymore. The average Joes, the normal citizens, are picking up on the corruption, and they're growing tired of it, and beginning to take matters into their own hands. You could even say this hints towards Bruce later becoming Batman. Episode 4 pushes us that bit closer to the gang war, and reopens Arkham Asylum, which is necessary not just for the rest of Gotham, but for all Batman stories to come, as Arkham is always utilized.
I'd go into more detail but soon I'm going to hit the UA-cam comment length cap. But hopefully this comment will make some people appreciate this season a bit more, because it's an underrated gem that deserves it.
I really wish more people loved this show as much as us it's my second favorite show after Smallville
I got into Gotham during the Pandemic as I wanted to see something Batman related and I found it on Netflix.
And I fell in love with the show and gets more interesting after each Season.
I think when Mr Freeze showed up, my interest went through the roof as he was my favorite character and they did him Justice caring for Nora.
I love how the introduction of Freeze was pretty much the gateway to the more super natural things in the show

The child actress that played Selena Kale was a great young actress I gotta look her up now a days to see what she has done lately !

I’ve watched it twice,easily one of the most underrated shows ever,s5 was utter bollocks but I loved it,the show is something u should definitely watch if ur starting watching Batman
The only problem I had with the show was the finale and Jeremiah himself but that’s not the writers fault
I entirely agree (even though I personally did love S5 but I’m on a rewatch marathon so that opinion can change). Im actually working on a follow up to this video that’ll be a much more in depth video regarding Gotham where I dive into why it’s such a fantastic show. I watched it as it was airing and always loved it, and I think one of my proud moments was getting my SO into the Batman Mythos through this show
Am I the only one that would’ve wanted to not see Thomas and Martha killed off immediately? Like if they had them for a few episodes to let us get attached to them and see Bruce before they died? It’d make it more meaningful when the tragedy ultimately comes, hell they could even tease what’s coming with Thomas saying “Bruce wants to see Mask of Zorro tonight so Martha and I are taking him”

Just started watching this for the second time. I never looked up how people felt about it, so I wanted to see the consensus because I really enjoy(ed) it. I think its great that it doesn't just race into action, but has the time to really lay the groundwork and grow. I didnt need it to be action heavy because we have so many movies for that aspect of it. I wanted to see more of the drama and this show really delivers on that until Gotham, and all the characters finally become what we know. The transitions are believable.
I will never forget the intro and outro screens so memorable
In my opinion gothem is the best modern type of batman, he gose through stuff and he is affected by it, but in the end he finds himself and finds a way to gain power from their deaths

We really needed to see the relationship of Mr. Freeze and Firefly in season five. Sure we got the PERFECT SCARECROW and an amazing Bane, but was I the only one who noticed both characters were missing in the final season? Other than that, Gotham is one of my favorite shows and I completely agree with everything said in this video. Good on ya!
I love Mister Freeze and I completely agree with you. I genuinely feel like his story is one of the most interesting stories when you look at the major roster of Batman villains. Truthfully, I would have loved a major arc for him in the final season to wrap up his story as well. And hey, thanks, I appreciate the love!
I think they planned for it (They mentioned Freeze & Firefly were feuding in the opening of S5) but they had to rush since they only got 10 episodes for the last season. Pleasantly surprised they did as good a job as they did given the constraints tbh. They would've needed a whole other episode or two to give Firefly & Freeze justice.
I absolutely loved Gotham. The last season gets a lot of flack (possibly more than the first season), but it felt like an amazing conclusion to the show. I honestly think that Gotham’s final season was far better than Arrow’s last season.
I actually agree but it's fairly disappointing that we have to essentially disregard the entirety of Arrow's last season since that spinoff show never happened lol. I want to eventually rewatch the show and make a video about it but I have so many other videos I wanna make prior to that

It wasn't necessarily their decision. From what I've readn and heard, the producers wanted to call him Joker and let him simply be Joker but at the time DC didn't want to give them the rights for.. reasons lol. It sucks but at the end of the day, every Gotham fan pretty much agrees that he's Joker and no one can tell us differently
I agree with that. But I’m saying I wish Jerome Valeska were still the one that Cameron Monaghan was playing at the end of the show instead of having his twin brother Jeremiah Valeska become The Batman nemesis instead

I finally finished watching it today, it's a great show overall. Adam West's Batman'd be my next series to watch.
I breezed thru the first six or seven episodes. Loved it. Recently just oicked it back up after a few years. Going to watch Pennyworth as well.

@@adeel-eh7xq Gotham has been the only time where I've enjoyed seeing the Batman universe go into deeper or darker aspects of itsself because it feels earned and it feels like it's not a waste of time or as if it's trying to sell you on a previous flaw being reasonable
Yep, I guess it was aimed at older audiences for the first time. Most people were used to seeing a 90s/early 2000s cartoonish or childish Gotham so it caught me off guard. But it felt like the Gotham from the Arkham games which also went into darker places.
@@adeel-eh7xq Gotham, in the best way possible, feels grounded. It feels like you can buy into the universe it's trying to sell you because of so many different reasons and it helps it case when it goes into darker areas. Hell, I love the Arkham Games ( I still need to play Knight for an upcoming video in the future ) and you're right, the tones are fairly similar!

i only had netflix so i accidentally started at season 2, i think thats what helped me get hooked into the show, after i realized within the first 10 episodes of season 2, ofcourse i went back and rewatched all of season 1, and then came back to season 2.

I've only recently binged watched the show again and it's still my all time favourite show, I just wish season 5 was 22 episodes instead of 12 and the final episode of Gotham was turned into a three parter instead of just one episode. Apart from that, love the show and it's weird to think next year in 2024 season 1 of Gotham will be 10 years old 🥰🥰
I started watching it this year after watching the Batman which started getting me more interested in dc, especially movies and tv shows that took place in Gotham. Right after starting it, it easily became my favorite show!

I like that in season 1 episode 3 of Gotham it asked us a question if Jim Gordon the main character (sort of) will prevent vigilantes from appearing but he failed and Batman was born
In Gotham, the titular city is so haunting and beautiful. It feels alive, like a breathing thing. Part of what makes the show so interesting is the city feeling like a living, breathing thing.
Also, the characters are all really fleshed out. From Zsasz to Jeremiah to Selina to Bruce to Alfred.
Had to comeback to watch the show after 3 Years enjoying season 3 so much bro

I love this show so much. It got me into Batman & DC.
And yes, there’s so much story & character development in this show.
It’s not perfect, especially near the end- I really do not like the Jeremiah decision & I generally wish The show could continue past Series 5.
This show didn't get me into Batman or dc. I already watched them. But It got me obsessed with the joker. And yes I'd already sent the dark Knight. I prefer the colorful version Jerome in Gotham and literally speaking Jeremiah in season 4.

If WB would stop having a stick up their asses and allow Batman on TV a full on sequel series and having Batman in it would be absolutely fantastic. Seeing how Gotham changed now that Batman has debuted would have been amazing. A Batman TV show would be crazy.
For me Gotham ist really good. The only downside is David Mazouz. The worst actor in Gotham. He looks like a boy who knows nothing and has nothing to do in Gotham. Sometimes he can knock out a guy that is 10 times stronger than him just to let us think he is cool or something. As I said, David Mazouz is a weak actor and his character is very boring....
I’m currently rewatching the show now and overall I’m really enjoying the show they’re really good at making every episode engaging my only dislikes is like the Batman stuff and the league of assassins stuff it just feels too early

@@IDontBeatGames I concur with your diagnosis. One thing that I feel like nobody can debate is that Gotham, when it came to casting, did better than any other Batman property. I'm including the animated series from the 90's in that. Outside of maybe The Scarecrow (who was perfected in TNBA) and Mr. Freeze (who was best in the Arkham games) every character was defined for me by this show. Corey Michael Smith as The Riddler, Camren Bicondova as Catwoman, Robin Lird Taylor as Oswald Cobblepot, Sean Pertwee as Alfred, and of course Cameron Monaghan as my favorite depiction of the Joker. Yes, numero uno, perfectomundo.

When it first came out, I was around the age (I believe) of the actor who played Bruce. I thought the idea was cringe. Pure cringe and cash grabbing. I was like what's the point of a Batman show where he's still a kid. I was never really interested. And then as years passed I grew more and more intrigued, and I watched the pilot last year. It was ok. Then, I decided to pick it up just for fun after finishing several excellent shows, and I'm actually hooked. I'm only halfway through season 1 and I'm already enjoying it, so if it gets better as it goes, this show might be pure genius

Just got back into this show. I remember waiting for the episodes every week during its run. It was so good. I think the latter half of season 3 or so fell flat but overall it was such a great show and deserved way more episodes. I really enjoyed season 1 and the rest got so much better. Really built that early Batman vibe from a mob city to the madhouse Gotham is today. The costumes, writing, acting, humor and action - all great. It still kept that comic book vibe while still upping the stakes, somehow managed to be grimdark AND silly and it worked. I really like the Jeremiah decision, we knew too much about Jerome it felt like, as Joker, and throwing Jeremiah's more ambiguous past into the mix worked well. Gotham being what it is, we can't rule out the possibility of Jerome coming back in this world's future either and that's just so funny to me. Clown sibling rivalry tearing the city to pieces. Proto Bane is another one I hear a lot about, more negatively, but I think he served the purpose he was meant to as a plot point - evil government, past ties to Jim, and bring the Bane story beats in - and we can even speculate he isn't going to be the actual Bane who fights batman in the future if we want, like Jerome didn't end up being Joker. There's some speculation that Eduardo is Bane's father for example. The ladies did so well in this show, Barbara was one of my favorites. I was never as annoyed with her S1 as most people were, and it really really paid off. I hope Barbara Lee finds out about her mom's past, that'd be so funny. Speaking of Barbara Lee, I think Jeremiah is going to have more than just the Red Hood gunning for him after A Killing Joke and Death in the Family. Bruce and Jim might have a no killing rule, but Barbara Kean definitely doesn't. Then again, no one stays dead in Gotham. Ugh I miss this show so much.
I loved it from first Season, people complained that it is not like the comics, but one should not forget that the Batman TV Show that was still a new Network series when I was a kid was even farther from the Comics than GOTHAM was.
I bought all 5 seasons on DVD when the Video Store closed down, and I told my Niece and her then Husband about it, they wanted to give it a look, they were hooked on it first Season, when they were on Season 5, I remember my then Step Nephew called me one afternoon asking "Are You SURE There Is Only Five Seasons Of This?" they didn't want it to be over.
The ending was rushed, but it is by my estimation the last great Television Series ever made, nothing that came after it touches it's level of quality

Y'all gotta stop hating on the first season. I like Riddler in that season but some people I know consider season one the only good season. Different strokes for different folks.

I liked S1 Penguin a lot. That season has pretty good high notes in it.
I liked Season ! for reference but a LOT of people do hate on it for whatever reason but I can see why since it's a lot slower if that makes sense?

I'm still baffled how a 13 year old in the first episode already made himself known as Bruce Wayne from his mannerisms and his way of speech alone.
FOR REAL! It's fucking crazy that even from season one, the David managed to nail the Bruce Wayne mannerisms and only got better over time. There wasn't any real growing pains or terrible moments where you're cringing. He fucking killed it as Bruce.

Have you ever watched some episodes in black and white? Really prefer it that way in my opinion. I'M always amazed, it's perfect for the dark, atmospheric tone of the show. The Grays, lighting, and love the shadows. It's like a Modern Classic Film

Alright I bought season 1, and I'll watch at least until season 2. I like Batman, and if this shows got such loving fans, it must be worth a watch. I'm picky about my shows, cause there's so many of em these days, so here's hoping this is worth my time.
It needed focus. Clear concise focus, better writing, better cinematography and a better matte. Maybe dont have Bruce as a co main character. Or Gordon as bland.
This Show made me Love much more Gordon and the Penguin.... Gordon its Gotham's White Knight and The Penguin its just fascinating!! Jerome its rlly underrated as a Joker and the Show overrall its good.
I like it more than 90% of the Arrowverse Shows lol.

It reminded me a lot of Sin City. But this is Gotham City. I just love it so much
Gotham as a show is a story of how the city developed into a city full of crime & maniacs worthy of a masked vigilante. S1 was a gothic noir mob show and did a killer job of establishing a fairly realistic set of characters & environment. Every episode & season thereafter pushes things towards comicbook level insanity. I thought it did a great job of trying to balance the absurd insanity & the serious. The acting ability of each of the main characters is off the charts. Imo, I think an astute watcher will confess it captured the best of the 60s show, Tim Burton universe, cartoon AND Nolan’s no-nonsense take…all the while having its own voice(s 😵💫😋). How well the show was created made “The Batman” feel like an unwatchable knockoff tbh.
Tried to introduce my friend to Gotham, but he refuses to get past the first season. Wish he'd just suck it up and get through it. He stopped on the Blind fortune teller. There's so much more after season 1 most people miss out on.
