Interesting test. I have been using STP oil treatment for over 40 years. I normally start using STP when the vehicle is around 75,000 miles. I have used STP on GMC, Ford, Volvo, and Toyota engines. Every engine has made at least 250,000 miles. I am currently using STP oil treatment on a Toyota Tacoma with 213,000 miles and a Ford Fusion with 127,000 miles with good results. I can't say that the engines had good longevity because of STP, but I can say that the additive did not harm the engines as some have claimed.
Is wynns oil treatment any good as claims to free up oil rings too, i have a honda civic 1.8 2012, been burning a some oil about a litre every 600 miles. This could help the oil consumption and wear too
Chris was year model vehicles are you using it in? I'm "thinking" about adding it to my 2011 GMC, 5.3 engine with the 5w30 oil thats recommended. I'd like your input what oil you are using in the Tacoma and the year model of it, and your results today.

These types of videos are great. All I can add is I've used STP high mileage in my '95 Lumina and it has reduced oil leaks from lower intake manifold / front cover gaskets. Lifter noise is a little bit less. Zinc is probably good for pushrod engines especially ones without roller rockers. But you might want a non zinc version (Lucas) if you have a car with a catalytic converter. My 95' doesn't have an O2 sensor downstream of the cat so I'm not particularly worried if the zinc kills the cat.
Back in the 80's, watched my Dad add a little blue bottle of STP at every oil change in a '83 Dodge Family Van. He always said it was the best 75 cents he ever spent. Got 200k miles out of the Van before it rusted away.
That was pretty interesting. If I do use STP, I usually only use it in the summertime. In the winter I use Rislone. A friends dad use that stuff for years, and swore by it.
This was good, ...I thought STP is just polymers that would hurt the wear test but apparently the thicker oil and other additives that the polymers are suspended in helped.

Good video for those who are scared that it won't be capatable with their car due to the thickness. I believe it glings to the engine parts better than normal oil. I have a 2003 Cadillac CTS and when I put that new Lucas stabilizer for low viscosity, the car felt so much quieter. Not a placebo neither. I kept noticing it and noticing it. I'm like yo this car feels smooth right now. Not that it wasn't smooth already. But I definitely felt smoother. The car sounds like it's not even on. Also I noticed my acceleration had more power. Trust me. That New Lucas in the 12oz bottle is some good stuff. I was surprised. Note* what I did was do an oil change with STP high mileage synthetic & I used a Lucas Low Viscosity Stabilizer when I changed the oil. I do my oil changes every 2+3 months. Thanks for your hard work, I liked your video, and w/o critisizing it, I think that this coul be a good series, perhaps adding a thicker version of the same oil (3 tests instead of 2), and testing different brands of additives to try to dettermine the best one. Once you find it, test varios oil brands with and w/o said additive...thanks!
For the most part I am not a fan of oil additives other than detergents such as Seafoam to help clean a neglected engine. Also, I have had good luck with Restore in older engines and it has been proven to significantly increase compression by several people. Other than that I'm not a fan. Think about it- If all these additives were really so wonderful and had no harmful side effects, why wouldn't high end oils like Amsoil already include them? A well maintained and properly designed engine will easily last several hundred thousand miles with no additives whatsoever.
AMSOIL sells their OWN additives.. (smh) Additives DO WORK, if you know what to use and how to use it. Plus is not like any company can just come and steal formulas left and right, these are obviously patented by their proprietaries and nobody likes to get sued for MILLIONS Of DOLLARS !
@1bad540i They have a huge selection from diesel additives to gasoline and gear oils plus their coolant additives and everything in between; racing grease, transmission fluid, limited-slip additives, brakes, etc.
In '96 I bought a '94 GMC , 4.3 engine, truck, 55k miles. I used 10w40 and ALWAYS added STP. Around 250-300k miles it was a quart low at the next oil change. I changed to 20w50 Castrol and STP. After 21 years of driving it I sold it with 484k miles on it. I am sold on STP, yes. I have a 2011 GMC now and with these newer engines and their different tolerances I'm not sure whether to add it to my oil or not, so I haven't. But I'm thinking about adding it to my synthetic oil, I'm just not sure.
Another video did an analysis on stp, 8 ppm zddp and it increased the TBN with the non synthetic. And ya, 0 is the viscosity of water so 0w20 was intended for no higher than 68F per online viscosity charts. STP for summer uses, MMO for winter.
I've used the blue can stp for my moped in three different mc oil grades: 20w50, 20w40 and 10w30. Added in 150km after oil change of each grade and felt them all the same on clutch behavior and actual engine noise more like 10w30 amongst all grades.
STP Synthetic oil additive is an additive, BASICALLY it's a concentrated bottle of the synthetic ingredients found in the oil you buy. There is no comparable differences.
I had a wesk oilpump in ,2007 gmc lifters started rattling bad on a trip i put stp in at gas station drove about two miles the engine quitened down and drove another 150 miles home changed oilpump and use stp synthetic treatment now with synthetic oil does fine with 50 more thousand miles
jeffcarpenter396, your post pretty much told me what I've been wondering. I have a 5.3 GMC engine, 2011 model, 157k miles. I'm thinking about adding STP at oil change but not sure about the tolerances and such of these new engines today. I have a lifter tapping at startup but goes away after engine warms up. I bet STP would stop that. Let me know more about your experience since we drive similar trucks. I'd like to hear how its going now and which STP oil treatment are you using? Gold can? Blue can?
Hey bud I will tell you something to look for these engines rocker arm and pushrods will wear out that might be something to check because if it starts up and rattles for a few seconds then the wear which creates a lot of clearance on the worn rockers and pushrods takes longer for they hydraulic lifters to pump back up they apparently bleed down while not running I had replaced these on a 2000 suburban with 289 thousand miles 5.3 ls
I read Robert Sikorsky's books "Drive it Forever" and "From Bumper to Bumper" from my library many years ago. He was a member of SAE and wrote a column for the New York Times. his books were compilations of the NYT columns I think. One if the things he said was that the API American Petroleum Institute has NEVER certified any of the well known oil additives, not one of them. He himself I believe approved of Mobil One, and the Teflon additive, I forget the name, but I read those books in the 90's. I think he's still alive but likely too old to be active.
It's basically Ester+PAO which has cleaning effect. You don't need to pay for this additives if you simply buy FULLY SYNTHETIC oil in first place which is made of Ester and PAO. Also, true synthetic oils ester and PAO have much lower pour point that normal oils around 30-40 percent. Unless you cool down the oils below -45°C, there won't be any different in the viscosity of both oils.
Most Fully Synthetic are now GTL paraffin or slack wax paraffin or hydroisomerised mineral oil paraffin. The days of "Real" synthetic oil are mostly gone except for a few specialized products like Mobil 1 0W16 or Amsoil Signature. The national advertisers agreed to call oil that performs close to a synthetic "Full Synthetic Motor Oil"
Great video Nate. So it looks like STP Synthetic Oil Treatment turns Warren distribution synthetic oil (AKA Amazon Basics, Super Tech, Kirkland Signature, Proline, amd Mag-1 into an oil whos wear protection rivals Amsoil, Schaeffers and Redline! Try comparing Amazon Basics treated with STP Syn Oil Treatment to stock Amsoil XL or Signature.
Good video, I've never used STP but have heard good things... Imo no need for STP if the oil your using has good chemistry and has high enough zinc levels already in the oil like 1100 ppm and above as long as you don't have a catalytic converter on your vehicle as the high zinc can clog the cat that's why they have lowered zinc level in the newer oils with SN Api specs. In vehicles and equipment with no cats this definitely could help if the oil your using doesn't have high Zinc levels already..... Only other concern would be COMPATABILITY of the motor oil and the STP components, I prefer to use a top quality motor oil like Amsoil ZROD with HIGH ZINC already in it so there is no problems with compatability of all the ingredients of the two products being mixed.....
Please tell me: During the lubricity test, did the STP blend generate a lot of air bubbles? It is a major cause of oxidation and cavitation....was the STP blend foaming or bubbling?
Overtime or 3000 mile oil changes which is what's that's designed for it will, it would cut the wire down by half plus it has jink and all the stuff the EPA took out of the oil in the 90s which also helped wear any reason it took it out because they claimed it would harm catalytic converters the truth is that might but it will take 20 years for it to harm the catalytic converter in any modern car STP synthetic oil for newer engines with higher clearances company bearings and that's why it's thinner than the Lucas or the traditional blue STP so I've used it for years and not
It seems they got rid of the ZDDP when moving to Synthetic for newer engines, so...What's actually in it? Hard to find direct info apart from marketing speal, VOA analysis would be interesting.

Stp synthetic oil treatment is 300ml wonder if much difference between the slick 50 premium synthetic oil treatment 750ml is any better? Just put stp oil in my 2012 320D touring as bought it with 130k mileage so just wanted to make sure my engine is looked after lol

I’ve only had one experience with stp 10w40 in my 79 gs1000 motorcycle. I always used Valoline but the store close to me only had that weight in stp and penzoil. I chose the stp and after one ride my bike was leaking badly from places it barely seeped from before. Not saying it’s a horrible oil but my advice is to stick to one brand because other brands contain different additives and chemicals that can cause weird stuff to happen to your seals.
interesting test.....wonder if there is much point adding STP oil treatment to already good oil though? i occasionally add it but have no idea if its doing any good ontop of premium/good quality oil
Probably about right. If I want a thicker oil I will use a thicker oil instead of wasting my money adding a thickener to the oil that provides no benefits.

I think after seeing your tests, I would like to put a 20% combo of Marvel Mystery Oil/STP. The Marvel Mystery Oil helped with sheer, cleaning and flow, and the STP also helps with sheer and possibly cleaning, but wasn't that good with flow. Amsoil Signature Series is already high in detergents and additives, and I wonder what will hypothetically happen if MOA is added to it.. I need your help to test that or shed some light on it in the comment section.

I know it sounds like a lie! But they filled it up & it never did give no problem!
its not that surprising since the oil you used was very low viscosity i am very sure though that if you used that stp on an engine requiring 0w20 it would do more harm than good since most of these engines have variable valve timing or/and hidraulic valve lifters plus there is a small chance that if the oil filter is small or of bad quality it would fail prematurely due to increased pressure of the oil that said it might be a very good choice in an engine with significant wear
I have a 2020 Honda Civic Sport Touring. I read the manual for the car and it says that no additives are needed for the car's engine. However, i've also read comments from other people where they've mentiomed that they've used additives on their cars about as new as mine including Hondas, and they were VVVERY satisfied with the results. Anyone care to weigh in...?

Thanks for your hard work, I liked your video, and w/o critisizing it, I think that this coul be a good series, perhaps adding a thicker version of the same oil (3 tests instead of 2), and testing different brands of additives to try to dettermine the best one. Once you find it, test varios oil brands with and w/o said additive...thanks!
I have thought of testing many oil additives as i tested sTp and Lucas stabilizer. If you have more to add please share.
I like this guy i was here in 2.7k subs
And i got nothing but love thank you i will try to improve.
I use STP high mileage oil treatment plus stop leak and seafoam sometimes both worth great !
Willy Pooh what oil additives does Amsoil sell ?
@@juicebox22a Just their engine and transmission flush to help clean neglected engines and transmissions.
8 ppm or 800 ppm ?
I've used the blue can stp for my moped in three different mc oil grades: 20w50, 20w40 and 10w30. Added in 150km after oil change of each grade and felt them all the same on clutch behavior and actual engine noise more like 10w30 amongst all grades.
thanks for the test and comparison, does this help in oil reduction too?
The stp contains zincdialkiphosphate a proven ant wear agent great for flat tappet cams also it’s a hi load anti wear additive
Only 8 ppm in the non-synthetic...Which is probably good.
Yep. Even prevents rod/main bearings from deteriorating prematurely . . .
Thanks for the post as always
Ok Nate
I like your common sense I just subscribed to your Channel

Thanks for the kindness and the NIA community is about sharing your experience and knowledge even if it doesn't agree with me.
I use STP on my Honda civic with 285,000 miles it quiets the engine and reduces oil burning.
Gold can? Blue can?
I use blue one oil change and stp synthetic gold treat the other oil change it has 289 thousand miles
I'd like to see STP 0w20 vs regular untreated 5w20
Amazing science here ty for this test. STP is better used with than without imho.
Thank you for such a good test
Hi,
Is it safe to use stp in
Nissan qashqai 1.2 petrol turbo engine ,
If yes, which one would you recommend?
Regards
Useful information. Excellent & Thank you
Good video,
I've never used STP but have heard good things...
I could not see any air bubbles or cavitation on the test.....so I'd say no.
Have you ever done any testimg with 0w 20 STP motor oil OR Havoline 0w 20 lifelong?
Awsome video. Now I will know what to use.
nice work, appreciate the video, well done
I use stp oil treatment mixed with 10w40 in my 1994 gmc with a mild 350 small block. Truck gets worked hard off road and tows all the time. I feel as though the stp is good for it.
I trust stp from 2012 to 2021 products are amazing also oil filters are the best
I do agree in cold temperatures
How did you manage to fit the1 quart of Amazon basics + 3 the ounces of the STP in the 1 quart capacity bottle? Surely the 3 extra ounces didn't evaporate. Explain.
I thought I was the only one cought that. real talk subb back thanks
Stp synthetic oil treatment is 300ml wonder if much difference between the slick 50 premium synthetic oil treatment 750ml is any better? Just put stp oil in my 2012 320D touring as bought it with 130k mileage so just wanted to make sure my engine is looked after lol
josephbrown3647, I'm thinking about adding STP in my 2011 GMC Sierra. Can you elaborate on your experience today after one year?
@jimmyworks3600 if I was you look into hot shot secrets. There FR3 or stiction. Both amazing 👏
Ive never used any type of additive with my oil changes, justmake sure to change them every 3k miles. I bought the car with 17k miles and now it's about to hit 77k, should I add some of these additives?
It was a pretty awesome video. I'm sold on the product. But this particular product is not available in India. How about the regular oil treatment (blue colour)? Any chance you could do a test on that please?
I already have that and yes it is very similar. But i plan to test it more. I had tested it personally in the past.
I live along the Equator....I think 5w30 is too thin for my car....[ our climate here ranges from 25deg in mornings to 36deg in afternoons ] ....wil STP thicker oil help increase the viscocity of the oil in my engine?
car : 2001 mercury grand marquise
i just added this product ( LOOVE it)
in kuwait its 54 celsius in some areas in 2pm these days summer and when i heat soak the engine (drive in traffic , accelerate hard and stop hard and do it again) the the valve trains begins to dance and jiggle (oil thins out so quickly ) i hate the new factory recommended motorcraft 5w-20 full synth
with this product added engine sounds new now matter how hard i push the engine
the new oil ford recommended is good only for winter
add it gradually and slowly after it reaches operating temperature while the engine is running idle
I’d run 5W-30 at those temps lol
Can you use this in a turbo charged car like the -22 Honda accord?
Super Demo 👌
S T P was designed for hard driving s t p stands for stop Tim please s t p ❤
Well done test! Would you be willing to repeat the test with synthetic-blend and full-synthetic oils?
I’ve only had one experience with stp 10w40 in my 79 gs1000 motorcycle. I always used Valoline but the store close to me only had that weight in stp and penzoil. I chose the stp and after one ride my bike was leaking badly from places it barely seeped from before. Not saying it’s a horrible oil but my advice is to stick to one brand because other brands contain different additives and chemicals that can cause weird stuff to happen to your seals.
Found you on tictok
I read once that STP throws off the balance of additives that are already in the oil. It's like putting four eggs in a cake recipe that calls for two.
How about for boxer engines?
STP is good for lifter tick but I heard it can harm your cat converter
you heard from dbag.. from someone that has been using it for 344k miles and still running. cats are just fine.. dont listen to idiots.
@@mica122213 🙏 🤝 👍
STP requires a larger starter motor to turn over engine in cold weather.
Not true, it got down to 43 deg f here in Southern California one night in January, and the car started just fine! 😊
interesting test.....wonder if there is much point adding STP oil treatment to already good oil though? i occasionally add it but have no idea if its doing any good ontop of premium/good quality oil

Thank you, ideas? Or information you can share on sTp ?
Stp additive convert 0w20 to 10w40 motor oil
Probably about right. If I want a thicker oil I will use a thicker oil instead of wasting my money adding a thickener to the oil that provides no benefits.
@@averyalexander2303 stp seems to be lucas oil stabilizer, and lucas has good critiques
@@marcianoterricola very true there are benefits, have you tried sTp?
@@NATESINTERACTIVEAUTO No, but it must be good, but everything in life when you add up to one thing takes away from another
My dad bought a $100 of lucas products off of a sales man back in the 90s including stabilizer, power steering stop leak, etc. Still got half of it.
My 07 Bmw used to eat 1qt/1000miles. i added a bottle of Stp Smoke treatment and the oil consumption decrease to 1qt/5k-6k miles. the additive was pretty thick tho i think thats why

My engine is starting to knock... hasn't been ran but a few minutes total since the slight knock started randomly one day... I about to add some of this to my engine. It's only 4 buck. And the engine is otw out already so might aswell.
How many miles on your engine?

I think after seeing your tests, I would like to put a 20% combo of Marvel Mystery Oil/STP. The Marvel Mystery Oil helped with sheer, cleaning and flow, and the STP also helps with sheer and possibly cleaning, but wasn't that good with flow. Maybe, use Super Tech Synthetic to keep cost lower and have a premix readily available for whenever my high mileage 2 cars need an oil change. Thanks for your tests. Can you try BG MOA Extended Formula?
I wonder if such oil Additive can be added to a high quality fully synthetic motor oil such as Amsoil Signature Series 5W-30 Synthetic Motor Oil.
Amsoil Signature Series is already high in detergents and additives, and I wonder what will hypothetically happen if MOA is added to it.. I need your help to test that or shed some light on it in the comment section.
Absolutely 💯 percent agreed. Keep the suggestions and questions coming
I agree. Test the MOA.
We built a engine in a car & the r&r guy left the drain plug out & the owner drove it 15 miles home & complained about the oil light & clicking so he brought it back it had no oil except what it was built wt stp in the blue bottle! I know it sounds like a lie! But they filled it up & it never did give no problem!
Great job 👍
Thanks, have you tried stp?
its not that surprising since the oil you used was very low viscosity i am very sure though that if you used that stp on an engine requiring 0w20 it would do more harm than good since most of these engines have variable valve timing or/and hidraulic valve lifters plus there is a small chance that if the oil filter is small or of bad quality it would fail prematurely due to increased pressure of the oil that said it might be a very good choice in an engine with significant wear
Does the additive change the sae rating??
Since it is only used diluted the difference is n o t severe . . .
i did not see u mix and stirr the additive.
