I also liked the tip about the rope being top to bottom rather than side to side. I will try that with some. I’m going to be making more over winter so I’ll have a few sets next year. I add between 15lb to 20lb In sash weights or old steel to the pot base. I talk about baiting up at around 22:55 in this video ua-cam.com/video/Z0Hwr4XiiSM/v-deo.html
Very informative, thanks very much for posting. A mate and myself are in the process of building and setting a few pots, is there any reason you use wood instead of alkathene for your strengthening ribs across the alkathene hoops on your pots?
Sheet lead wrapped around the rope with insulation tape will still go through a winch as long as the leads not to thick. or just use leaded rope if using a winch. As far as rope I just go for the cheapest 3 strand I can find that's not to soft.

Too many regs up here in the north east. 30 miles up coast regs change again. Very informative video. See guernsey in June next year. Few trips out at sea on charter boats I reckon. Best video on the internet troj Your lifestyle is still more idyllic than mine. 😂
Got some small collapsible pots for the kayak to try next year. They're only about twice the size of a large shoe box. They have creel door type entrances on both sides, and after you explained the (catch) differences between your top entrance pots and the Scots using parlour entrance pots, it'll be interesting the results I get.... Just one last thing though... I'll be potting in fairly shallow water, will paracord be OK to use instead of full on rope? As I'm just thinking of weight and space on the yak?
Thing with the kayak is you are limited in what you can use so you have to go with what you can carry. I believe most collapsible's are creel style but they will still catch. Para cord should be ok but thinner cords do tend to get snagged more than thicker ones. It might be best if you can keep the pot out of heavy kelp beds.
Chris Davison - Spot on what Troy has said. As for the soft eye pots vs bucket hole. I have only ever used the soft eye ones and they do catch lobsters and brown crabs ( as I show in the videos ) but do not get the big spiders as Troy explains in this video. Next year I am going to get a couple of the bucket ones and see what the catch difference is like. 😉🦀🦞
@@Trojwaterman I'll be keeping them out an kelp beds etc, because if I get them snagged and you're trying to pull them out a snag, you can pull yourself out the kayak if you're not careful....! 🙈
I used to a lot on my parents boat but Im on the rocky side of the Island now. There are some there but its tricky fishing for them you loose a lot of tackle.
I use to fish the island every year for 2 weeks in late summer ...but have not been over for a few years .....must make the effort and get back over . Keep the videos coming mate 👍
im glad you try use rope that sinks because im a sailor and we live in fear of getting caught in a lobster line i have a freind who had his boat smashed up against rocks because he got caught in a pot i have also heard stories of people getting caught in a pot and having their whole crew getting killed. england i beleive is safer for pots than ireland aka fishermen are better at keeping their pots out of the way and using rope that dosent float.
When I was younger in my first boat I had a floating rope from a pot go into my prop and it blew the bush in my prop. I managed to get home but it cost me a lot of money to get another prop. Things can go bad fast getting fouled on a rope especially with the big tides here. Pot ropes should always be sunk.
Great video troj,just thought I’d share something about pots,I made 20 of your bucket type pots,10 with black pipe and 10 with blue pipe ,the blue pipe out fished the black pipe every time.its strange how color affects fishing,do u lead your rope all the way down to your pot or half way down?i like your idea how u tie your bridle to your pot,might change a few see how it goes
I always tie my lead full length of the rope. I move my pots around different in depths plus I can switch ropes around and not worry about if its leaded or not. I had 1 black pipe pot once . I have tested these pots against various commercial pots over the years and made small adjustments from time to time.
Really informative. I’m a recreational fisher and planning to use some pots for the odd lobster. This video makes so much sense.

Thanks, The top to bottom rope makes life much easier when hand hauling, also helps against scratching the boat

We made some years ago in just alkathene they flexed to much, we ended up putting steel rods in the base and they never really caught that well

Mine are about 100 ft but that depends on depth of water. You want your pot in the boat before the second one leaves the seabed if pulling by hand

Just the weight put in the pot make sure buoys are not to big and ropes not to short that's what will drag the pot often
