      If you do try let us know how you get on. As a kid I used to take homemade traps down the beach & cliffs catching crab & lobster.

    how thick should the rope be? 10mm polypropylene ok?

    • @Trojwaterman
      @Trojwaterman  6 років тому

      10mm is what I use on the normal pots. The one on this pot is only about a 6mm braided rope that was lying around.

    So lobster cant swim back up thro the same hole they came in ?

    • @Trojwaterman
      @Trojwaterman  3 роки тому +1

      They tend to crawl more than swim if its a big hole or the pot is tilted they could find their way out over time.

    How can I make big hole in side of washing basket

    • @Trojwaterman
      @Trojwaterman  3 роки тому

      Carefully use a drill making lots of small holes, put a bit of wood under it so you don't crack it, or push a hot poker through it

  • @rwglavin3794

    Outstanding. Could the color of that pot make a difference in the catch ratio? I'm not sure if those bugs see color. Just something I'm throwing out there for consideration.

    • @Trojwaterman
      @Trojwaterman  6 років тому

      I don't think color matters or at least I have never noticed it making a difference.

      Depends on the depth it is in - according to divers red is the first colour you lose as the water gets deeper -about 40 ft I think

    Could i make a trap like this that works for crawfish

    • @Trojwaterman
      @Trojwaterman  6 років тому

      I don't see why not as long as the holes are small enough

    Do you get much theft from your pots?

    • @Trojwaterman
      @Trojwaterman  2 роки тому

      Not so often they can easily be seen with the high land elevation and word travels fast around here

    Did you use it any more does it work well

    • @Trojwaterman
      @Trojwaterman  6 років тому

      I used it for about 3 to 4 months. For an old washing basket it worked well it ended up with around 20 Lobsters that were of legal size.

    Looks easy to make. Traps are not allowed in California for recreational fisherman.

    • @Trojwaterman
      @Trojwaterman  6 років тому

      They are allowed here but you must have a licence here if you sell any fish

    • @Mahigeer1
      @Mahigeer1 6 років тому

      In California, selling fish requires a commercial fishing license as well. Then use of traps are allowed.

    gently grabbing them out the pot and releasing them your harsh. you want them to liveand not e hurt throwing them at force back into water. if your not eating them. value life. i see this a lot with the fisherman neighbours of mine.
    why dont they climb back out the hole?

    • @Trojwaterman
      @Trojwaterman  4 роки тому +1

      I am very aware of looking after the future that's why I fish the way I do. I am only a couple of feet from the water although the camera makes it look much further. Most potting boats are probably 3 times higher out the water. The force used is not aimed at the water its to clear the gunnel and propeller and to work quick to avoid being pinched. Also if you do not use enough force the crab/ lobster can grab the glove they can swing back around and smash into the gunnel. The crabs and lobsters are much tougher than you think and it does no lasting damage, I often see the same lobsters with distinguishing marks. Some will climb out but most cant figure out how to get out
