Thanks Barry, interesting to watch, Iv'e never really tried netting, although I can remember my dad sitting on a winters evening making small net panels to fit his fishing creel (no, the sort you sit on, not chuck over the side) but that was 60 years ago now, more skills lost too time, thanks for keeping them alive 👍
Have a great holiday season 🍻

      Hi Neil.
Wow! Yup, that's definitely a lost art now a days.
Fishermen today are absolutely spoiled with being able to buy netting already made.
I'd love to learn how the old boys used to do it...but sadly there's none left to teach.😥👎
Hope you and your family have a wonderful Christmas period. 🎄🎅🎁🎁🎉😉👍

That Fid looks a handy tool or stabbing your hand 🤨. The new van is earning its keep. Good move to leave the doors open so they don't trap anything they shouldn’t. Most interesting explanation covering the repairs of the creels.👍

Absolutely fascinating Barry, you work hard at the day job and still find time for the blogs. This has reminded me of my dad when he had made up the ends of marquee ropes etc for camping. It must have been a skill learnt during his national service in the Royal Engineers. A technical question... if you are using platic rope and old bike tyres, does it concern you that these will add to the pollution or is it just a drop in the ocean? 😃I recently learnt of your chanel from coastrider; another fascinating youtuber, so I am catching up. There seems to be a great community up in Dunbar. Keep up the good work.

      Hi Michael
Thank you so much for your kind comment and support. We really appreciate it.
As for the pollution question ( which is a good one, sir)
I think fishermen are more aware of the impact they are making on this planet.
Most fishermen make the correct choices for their business's with materials that are cost viable, and unfortunately their is a lot of plastic in those materials.
Back in the day, creels were made from all wood and hassan netting, which were all bio degradable materials, which were ready available at that time.
These days, the cost of these types of materials is ridiculous.
Take, for example, 12mm rope. I can get the top brand of today's synthetic rope for £71 for 220 meters per coil.
If I were to buy the same amount on hessian rope, that 220m coil would cost me £320 plus vat😲
So, with fishing being a very expensive game as is, you can see why the fishermen don't go down the more sustainable route.
I hope that helps answer your question.
Bruce is an absolutely diamond of a guy. Love his channel also.
We hope you enjoy your catch-up on both channels.😁👌
      All the best

I like the idea with a mesh door on the side rather than the ends do you ever use parlour pots or just stick with creels 👍

    • @onemanandhisboat
      @onemanandhisboat  Рік тому +1

      Hi Jarrod.
Thank you so much for your comment. We really appreciate it.😁
The door over the side, instead of the ends, was actually my late father's idea...I think he was a bit miffed, of the end doors always being opened after a bit of weather.😂😂😂😂 it's just stuck from there.😂😂😂
Yeah, we'll be trying parlours maybe next year...this years coming, is just about us getting on our feet.🤞😁👌
Hope you have a great weekend.
      All the best. 😁

Let us know how you get on bud.
Most of the Dunbar men, don't have the trays ( too much hassle with the rubber) but there gear is trash within 5 years max. 😲
The gears expensive enough without getting through them quickly. 😁👌😉👍
      Same to you bud.
We hope you and your family have a wonderful Christmas period.
      All the very best.

😂😂😂 I totally get that. It does take a wee while to perfect the correct size, and it only comes with practice.
Sometimes, I can still do a repair and look at it and think that looks like 💩🙈😂😂😂😂 so, you're not the only one.😂😂😂😁👌
      All the best, mate.😊

Nothing worse than repairing gear after a easterly are that plastic bases worth getting for bottom of the creels to stop bottom bar wearing out Hooe you have a good Xmas Barry

    • @onemanandhisboat
      @onemanandhisboat  Рік тому

      Hi Alan.
Thank you so much for your comment, we really appreciate every single one.😉👍
I would say so, for the plastic bottoms, but mind you, I wouldn't like to see the price if them now a days. 4 tears ago, they were £7 a pop, including VAT. 😁👌
But, for the age of the creel, it increases the life time, ten fold.
2 of my fleets are nearly 7 years old...and you can't even tell which ones.😂😂😂😁👌
      Hope you and your family.
      Have a wonderful Christmas period.
      All the best.

How many times a season does your gear get thrashed and need this kind of attention?

    • @onemanandhisboat
      @onemanandhisboat  Рік тому

      Hi David.
Thank you for your comment and question.
      It depends on circumstance, really.
If the creels get caught out in shallow water in a storm, then quite often.
But this is only a once a year going over.
It's good to keep on top of the gear as they will certainly catch better.
      All the best.😊
