Last time I went there, went with my older brother and Dad in 2001. They're both gone now. It was becoming pretty commercialized at that time. Stayed in Hill City @ the Super 8. EDIT - oh, and we rode. Dad @ 61 didn't believe in trailering. Yes, I'm old, and old school. Rode a '97 883 up there both times, ('98 and '01). Good times. BUT, the taillight lens vibrated off of that little 883 going into Rapid City. 😆

Grew up in Sturgis. Back in the 70s it was much looser and more free-wheeling believe it or not. Back then people could camp in the city park. My dad took me down there when I was 12 or 13. Like Escape from NY in there. Lol! Suffice to say when you grow up in Sturgis you see your first set of boobies at an early age! Ride free!

Appreciate all the information on your Sturgis videos Mr. Monkey. I'm heading to Sturgis for the first time this year and riding from central Florida. Screw that crap about trailering your bike, anyone that has a problem with that just has NO sense that not everyone can ride the distance, physically. I make the trip with my cousin, who rides a Softtail Convertible, and cannot physically ride the distance (1100 miles), and so I trailer mine and his, so we can enjoy Sturgis. Anyone has an issue with that, SCREW YOU.... seee me at Sturgis and talk shit to my face! I can make the ride, but my cousin cannot, and so I chose to trailer mine and his, so we can go together, and enjoy Sturgis together.

Just get there. last year was my first time and I get it now once you drink the kool aid you're hooked. do I decided to ride up From West Palml Beach , South Florida flat out made it in 3 days to Rapid City . A bit nuts of a trip only one night in Valdosta , GA at a motel the rest a few cat naps on the ground next to the bike and Red Bulls but I made it. Yes leaving Florida sucks it takes hours just to leave the damm state from the bottom. the rest I-75 north bound at posted speed limits (small lie ) . when you get there it's another amazing world as a photographer the images I took are priceless . Just do it someday won't happen , Jesus might call you home or nursing home in the future won't let you out. Me I getting bike ready wind calls again. Good video Monkey.....

I was wondering how how hard it is to go there and make sure to my bike. Isn't it screwed with and make sure that I don't have to be in violence and fighting and everything like that because play beginning life was always violence? In I try to stay away from it so my for my drama glands are at work and because I bipolar.

Tough question, some say that it's not about the destination, but the journey, on the other hand there's also a good argument for trailering your bike, not to be too worn out when arriving at destination

    Great video!
I agree with you that people can go which way they want, it’s all about being there, like the lady with a disabled daughter, I have a 3 year old baby son that has to feed through a G-tube which needs power and I few other things we have to have with us to be able to deal with emergencies for him, we almost lost him 3 times, and he loves Harley’s! He see’s one of them and he smile’s and waits for the start up and the rumble, i too live in florida , can’t fly , can’t ride the bikes we have, so that leaves me with a toy hauler to go when I can with my family and baby-son. He would enjoy the trip and the stay there, hopefully next year,
Thank you for your insight and keep it going

too much judgement from people. I like to ride from St Louis - 1100 miles - but have have seen too many "Nice Trailer Asshole" signs on the modern Road/Street Glides. It was hard riding a Shovel or Pan years ago, but these modern bikes are like riding you couch. As you said, just get there, it's a blast!!

Although I am trailering to Colorado this year to ride with my friend like we used too. This will be year 12 for me. The hotel was not bad this year. I've seen worse. I did use points however and that is how you do it cheap. Save your CC points.

Grew up in Seabrook just down the road…the rides in SD/WY are amazing and well worth the effort. It’s hard to compare Laconia and Sturgis as they both bring their own types of racing/vibe. Sturgis needs to be seen/witnessed just like Laconia/Daytona. You can stay in SD on the cheap/free but you’d have to break out the camper or tent.

Always hated people who trailered their bikes, then I got older and grew up some and realized that there are many legit reasons to do that. However...the what I call fake bike riders, I know I can hear the panties bunching as I type this. You know the ones, the guys who trailer their bikes but take every opportunity to dress up in the leathers, unload the bike while the wife snaps a pic of them in front of the "Welcome to (insert state or states of choice here)" sign to prove to everyone back home that they rode their trailered bike. I still have no love for those guys. Having made a short story long, I agree you for you, I'll do me, but please for the love of all that's holy DON'T BE THOSE GUYS WHO FAKE RIDE.

Can you give advice for somebody doing a solo ride on their bike from Nevada? I’m hearing people say to go there a week before and do the local rides because they are less crowded, stay for the first two days that Sturgis opens, and then head home on less crowded roadways. 70% of my focus would be to do the local rides around Sturgis, 30% would be downtown/vendors/concerts. I’m sure I can come back another year and do it differently, but I’m wondering what you would suggest since you have a lot of experience there? Staying in Rapid City in a hotel sounds like a wise option for me. But part of me likes the idea of pulling into the Buffalo Chip and having that company have a tent ready for me and using Da-Bus to get around? Decisions, decisions, first world problems. I’m in my mid 50s so I don’t plan on being out all night till the wee hours of the morning. Tnx.

Well, I’ve been to Sturgis about 13 times and I rode it every time about 700 miles there and 700 miles back and I used to say you need to ride your bike there I haven’t been in about five years and now I’m 72 years old and during that time I bought a trike are used to say I would never on a trike so I’m thinking about going this year so I think what i’m going to do is ride my trike up on a trailer and haul it to Sturgis

Would love to come the 3rd, but the Da Bus doesn’t start until the 4th, and I do not drink and ride. If anyone knows of transportation options, I am all ears.

If I had not seen it myself I would think your lying lol. I saw a husband and wife at sturgis two years ago both on trikes. They each had half a little camper type thing behind their trike and when they get to their destination they pop em up, extend em, and then bolt the two halfs together.

I feel lucky that we only live 12 hours away. We ride and stay at hotel, my wife enjoys trip better.

Btw, I stayed at a roach motel the first year at 100 a Night. Sooo bad I never did one again, so there's that.

I was born in Rapid City and live in Honolulu. I rode from California four years. Went West coast way and was hailed out two years. We finally took an RV and trailered and stayed several miles outside of Sturgis and rode in. Best way to go is from Vegas. I own four bikes in Hawaii and I rent when I come to the Mainland.

Monkey, you would save over all by adding a diesel tuner. It allows you to get better MPG.

Hotels have been cheaper the last few years. I booked 4 weeks out last year for the 10 days at a Best Western for $1,800. Kayak and other sites can find a last ditch room deal.
