Sturgis Screw Ups: I broke my own rules, don't do these!

  • I have a few Sturgis / rally rules I put upon myself after years of going to rallies, and despite knowing better, I made some mistakes during Sturgis 2022. Here are just a few of the mistakes I made while staying at the ‪@SturgisBuffaloChip‬. Learn from my mistakes and have more fun.

I've found that one of the hardest things for a highly motivated person, let alone couple, to do is to learn to stop. Stop running, stop doing, just stop, sit, have a drink, chat for while and enjoy what the day has brought you. It can be horribly difficult to do, even harder when you are at Sturgis with a million things to do. Still, you owe it to yourself to break the cycle, even for an hour or two to stop. You might miss x.. but you won't regret taking the time to decompress and enjoy the sounds, smells and sights. Those can be the best memories of the trip, easily. Don't lose that opportunity.

My wife and I were on a run recently and we were located about middle of the pack. We were next to a brother of mine with other riders I know directly behind us. The guy in front of me was another story. This guy couldn't hold his track at all. He was trying to stay next to the guy in the other track and failing miserably almost swerving into him. Nor could he maintain speed, he was in and out of the throttle constantly. He was in the oncoming lane numerous times. At one point we took a left hand turn onto another road and this guy winds up cutting across the other track almost taking out the other rider and goes into the ditch somehow keeping the bike on two. There was a barbeque following the run but after the ditch incident my brothers and I left the pack and went back to my place. Going to the barbeque wouldn't have been a good idea at that point and as it was a charity ride for a disabled child we decided to opt out. Later I talked to the organizer of the ride and find out the guy dumped his bike pulling into the property where the after party was and that he hadn't been riding for more than a couple of months. I guess my point is if someone has little to know experience riding they should be at the back of the pack not in the middle of 200+ riders.

That’s awesome that you do a critical review of your trip. In the Navy we call it a “Hot Wash”. What we did, where we failed or were unsatisfactory, what we could’ve done betters, and how we are going to be better next time. It’s all part of improvement. So much knowledge and wisdom in your channel. I enjoy every post.

I hear ya on slowing down a little. First year that I brought the missus, we rode the 1,300 miles from So. Cal in 2.5 days. Left on a Wednesday and arrived Friday afternoon. Problem was, we left for home that following Sunday. Rush around to ride all the rides and show her all the sights (including Mt. Rushmore, Devil's Tower, etc). This year, we left on a Sunday for Sturgis and left again on a Sunday for home. Spent more time, didn't ride all over creation and had a better time. Much slower pace and enjoyed ourselves better. Glad you got home safe and looking forward to your rally videos. Thanks man...

They told me that is the right way to pass other bike's in there state and I should learn that. To me that is not safe to pass nor do I want to do that to other's.

I like how you said stop and smell the roses and just hear the rumble of bikes go by. Was rideing with my wife and was talking about being a kid and hearing bikes roll by anywhere I was at and how cool it was. Haven't been able to make it up to Sturgis but looking in the near future to do it. Also might make it to the smoke out considering its not far from us and love hearing the stories and the information on what to do at Sturgis. Yes the a**hole on the yellow bike was probably the "ride once a year" guy but we all know how to ride and you are right about him hurting somebody else. Keep a cool head and hope to meet you in passing some time.

And I'm glad to hear that you want to protect that cranium of yours by wearing a lid. My wife suffered a TBI in a rear end auto accident and from that day ( 10/19/2017 ) I have and always will wear a lid. I live in California and very seldomly do any lane splitting. I will if a car in front has bad exhaust or someone in front of me is smoking and I can't take it anymore. People in the cages think it is funny to try to block you out.

  • @a.r.o7697

There's a time to split lanes and times when you definitely shouldn't. I'm from NH where it isn't legal and currently live in CA where it is legal. I do it when it makes sense (when in a situation where I could sit for a hot minute waiting to get off a ramp). Then there's people who do it when there's a steady flow of traffic, they're going too fast, and being an asshole as a result.

It was my first Sturgis. I had a great time! But I did have a few people pass me in my lane. One occasion it was a large group and it did surprise me. I’ve only been riding for a little over a year. I rode out from WV and was pretty fatigued from riding so many miles to get there. I didn’t need the extra challenges dealing with people riding like that. Wish I could have crossed paths with you just to say hello. Maybe next year!

Man I'm jealous. For so long I've wanted to ride but this country I work in (expat) is extremely unsafe for bikes. It's depressing and it's all I dream about, day in and day out. I envy you man and all riders (except for crotch rockets).

The dude on the yellow street glide. It bothers you to that level because you have courtesy and respect for other riders. So you getting angry about it is your right. Keep up the videos I love them. Hope I get to meet you at one of the rallies someday. God bless

I doubt it since it's so close to Sturgis. Not enough money to do everything we would like.

I had a bonehead on his BWM adv pass me on the left just as I was making a left hand turn into my driveway! Yep, my blinker was ON and my brake lights work. In my book that’s the answer to the question “How stupid can one person be?”

Don’t be hard on yourself brother. You have done things that many people don’t get to do within their lifetime. You live your life as you see fit and live within the moment. No one is perfect and why should we as your viewers put that on you. Hell the man upstairs knows that we are all one rock away from just saying f-it. Understanding that you want to set a good example, but to that it is literally impossible to be all that and more. When you try to do things like that you take away from your family and from who you truly are. Be yourself and have all the fun in the world because that is what life is about. Also only you know your limits and when you do that without even trying you are giving others the try you brother. Take care and God Bless.

I do this too often on vacation. Go, go, go, say yes to every idea, invite. Then get home and need a couple days to relax and unwind. It makes vacation feel like work at times. Don’t want to have an itinerary like a cruise ship. Remember, NO is an answer to all the activities & events.
By the way, the rube who passed you in your lane, is SUCH a liability. We had a buddy who rarely ride-rides(he bar hops)…. We were all out to ride to our favorite Sunday afternoon biker hang out. Rolling along, just slightly behind another biker ahead of us, two-up and not from our group, this “buddy”, apparently impatient with our leisurely ride, not in a hurry, chooses to jump out of formation, blasts by me to show off his Mikuni and how loud his bike is, rattled me as I never saw him coming, and still charges ahead, blazing by this husband/wife two-up in front of us, IN THEIR LANE, he doesn’t know them, scaring the sh*t out of them to where they swerved over into the right lane……one of my buddies pulled up alongside me, we’re shaking our heads like….our boy better hope that couple doesn’t follow him into town, and grind his teeth off on the asphalt! I would have. He definitely got put on ice that night and never invited out again. No need.
