ABOUT STURGIS, SOUTH DAKOTA
In the early days, Sturgis was referred to as Scoop Town. There are a number of stories that persist as to why this name was used, but most are variations on a common theme. Fort Meade, originally Camp J.G. Sturgis, was established to protect travelers to the Black Hills during the gold rush years, around 1878. What was to become Sturgis sprang up to meet the needs of the soldiers and miners. The early entrepreneurs, many of them proprietors of saloons and brothels, were said to “scoop up” the money of the cavalrymen and miners. Other stories are that the early town was so lucrative and so much disposable income was available to those entrepreneurs they literally had to “scoop up” all the profit.
The very first Sturgis motorcycle rally was held on August 14, 1938. The event was organized by the town’s motorcycle club called the Jackpine Gypsies who bought and developed large tracks, hill climbs and field areas where the rally would be held.
“Pappy” Hoel - Founder of the Sturgis Rally! It was Clarence Hoel or "Pappy" who was credited for founding the event when he bought a franchise of the Indian Motorcycle Company (a manufacturer of motorcycles in North Carolina) in Sturgis during 1936. After that, he organized the Jackpine Gypsies.
During the first few years, the Sturgis motorcycle rally focused on racing and stunts, testing the participant’s various riding skills, courage and stunt creativity. By the 1960s, the rally action expanded with hill climbs and motocross. Audiences saw more daredevil maneuvers like the half-mile track racing, ramp jumps, head-on automobile crashes and board wall crashes, the reasons for the tremendous popularity of the event today. The only time that the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally was not held was in 1942, at the height of World War II.
Today, the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally continues to reap the support and attendance of both participants and motorcycle fans all over the United States and in some parts of the world. In 2015, a record 739,000 attended the rally’s 75th anniversary, including entire families who came with their RVs and rode the few last miles to Sturgis on their motorcycles.

I spent Jr. High and Highschool in Sturgis. It's a great place to grow up. Some of the best people in the world. The Black Hills are a very special place, and where I learned to ride. Love the videos. Thanks
What a place to grow up! That's awesome. Thanks for watching, Rodney👍
@@2LaneLifegreat trip video wife and i would like to go with friends from work. We have a 23 tri glide
I'm a fan of your videos and this series is great. My wife and I have been riding together since we got married (52 years ago in August), we've been to Sturgis but always during the rally so I'm really enjoying this.
Thanks for your support, Richard! It was really cool seeing the area without the rally. A must see! Congrats on 52 years!
My Son and I rode out there from Northern Michigan last year 2 weeks after the rally and had a blast, as you are now. Hope we can do it again later this year? Your video is helping show me some places to hit. I am Retired from the Army and am enjoying every minute of it. Look forward to your adventures. Wow, I just looked at the date! Holly crap you got nerves. Be safe
Awesome! It was definitely cool seeing the area without the crowded roads and restaurants during rally. Stay tuned for the rest of the series, we'll show ya plenty more spots to check out. More adventures to come! Thank you for your service, Tim🇺🇸
Thanks for the ride! I was up in Newcastle Wyoming over Easter weekend visiting two of my kids and three of my grandchildren. We all had traveled around the area from Devils tower to Spearfish, Deadwood, Mount Rushmore, Crazy horse, all the way up to Rapid City. Yes, it had rained and snowed on us.
I had driven past the Boars nest a couple times, but it wasn't open yet. If you want to eat at another local restaurant go to the Chute Rooster in Hill City. They have awesome food and great people.
I'm wanting to driven to Keystone again and check out the old steam locomotives at the 1800 Keystone depot. Steam trains draw my interest.
Awesome story Robert. We’ll have to check out your recommendation. Thanks for the support!
More or less the best way for finding is not having to look ✌🏻appreciate the point of view and experience of no push rush 🇨🇦☕️
Agreed!! Thanks for coming along for the journey, Jerold!🤙
2:55 😂 just re-watched and rollin with laughter. See ya, down the road. 🇺🇲
Hahaha good times! Gotta love those camera issues😂
Love your videos. My father and I were a Harley Davidson dealer from 1955 till 2020 . I ride to Sturgis every year because I love the rally so much to do . I’m 67 this year and just bought me a CVO Roadglide 2022 model . I have never owned a Road Glide all these years always road the bat wing street glides and ultras . Just ordered a lot of accessories for the RG from Thrashin Supply love their products. I love to ride long rides in the West best place to ride period . Keep up the videos you guys are great . Man, that's awesome! What a time that must have been, running the dealer with your dad for so many years. Sounds like you're having a great time on the Road Glide. Thanks for sharing your story and for your support Russell!
Love the interviews! What great people. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for the input, glad you're enjoying the vids!
the rally is fine but if you really want to know the area, go when the rally isn't there. So much history and natural beauty, thanks for sharing
Agreed!! It was incredible exploring the area with wide open roads without the crowds! We'll definitely be back again without the rally going on.
Thanks for watching, Lela 👍
Thank you gentlemen. Never been there and have always wanted to. I bought a new Roadking 3 years ago and now my wife and daughter have both bought new Road kings and we are planning a trip to Sturgis next year (without the rally) so looking forward to seeing the rest of your trip. Safe travels guys!
A Road King Family, that's awesome! You guys have a great trip ahead. The Black Hills with wide open roads are absolutely incredible. Thanks for watching, Rob!
I was just in Sturgis in the third week of June and it is the best time to go to the Black Hills. 25 people at Full Throttle. 20 people at Black Hills HD. East to get lodging and no waiting line for anything and my wife and I did it all. Weather was great. Not the heat of August.
If you like crowds, concerts, traffic jams, long lines, duck walking your bike through Needles and fat smelly drunk bikers then you should wait for Sturgis.
Hell yea Rob! I hope all 3 of you have an amazing journey there and I'm sure your gonna enjoy it immensely.- rubber side down, shiny side up , respect from sunny ass Arizona.
I've never been to the rally, but I've ridden up there a few times both solo and with a friend, and I really enjoy the area. I especially enjoy Deadwood. The whole area is great.
It really is. As JD said, "the Black Hills are magnetized.." and we agree! Thanks for watching 👍
Love your Deadwood series, I'm planing a trip to Deadwood in my Miata. So much fun driving the kind of roads you showcased.
Awesome!! Thanks for tuning in, Jeffrey! We're glad you're enjoying the series. Those are definitely some great roads for the miata!
Well done! You have me hooked to watch this next installment!
Thanks, Connie!! Plenty more to come! Thanks for watching 👍
Awesome videos of your travels. My goal is to ride and see Sturgis before the Rally . Keep up the great touring and presentation to the bilked community
Thanks Bill, glad you're enjoying the vids! We'll keep them coming 👍
Love the area no matter what time of year...
Agreed!!
Simply Greatful ... thanks so lot Guys 👍👍👍😊

Thanks for the warm welcome, Douglas!! Can't wait to make it back there during rally 👍
HALLO FRIENDS I love too see yours trip on you tube .See you next week
Thanks Leif!!!
Going to Sturgis is my plan for this fall, and this journey provides a perfect preview and a history lesson. SD and these places grow into me as the good ol’ America with friendly people. I can’t wait to watch the next episode.
We hope so!! Maybe a bit of weather, but should be very colorful in fall! Glad we could share some history and insight. Always happy to hear you're enjoying the vids, Sangjoon! 👍

Thanks for watching 👍
I'm from s.d east side.Love your show Love the Black Hills.
We do too!!!
Love the garbage tubs on the upper deck at bores nest
👍👍
Love the fact you guys get to slow down and enjoy the black hills without the crowd's. Slow down take it easy. Lol
Agreed!! A damn good time to say the least 👍
Great content guys! I have been binge watching for about a week now! Love it all!! Thanks!
That's what we like to hear!! Thanks for the support Scott!!
Went to Sturgis Rally last year. A lot of people! I'm riding back up there from Southern Illinois this year but I'm only going to catch the last 2 days of the rally so I can ride a little bit without so much traffic then I'm riding to Casper Wyoming again like I did last year then back to Southern Illinois again. I love the rally I just wanted to see what it's like without all the people in the Black Hills and Deadwood. Thanks for the video, stay safe! Ride safe!
Yes, we leave after a few days there. Enjoy your ride! Catching at the end should be good too.
love this scene with the boars nest! Great job again !! You guys are real bikers! Riding all the time no matter what weather... not like some sunny state vloggers :D
Thanks, Renato!! The Boar's Nest is one of our favorite places to hang out, especially after a nice long ride! Rain or shine, it's time to ride! Thanks for the support 🤘
Beautiful. Can’t wait to get there for the first time in August
It sure was! We're excited for ya. Gonna be a great time 👍
It's interesting watching a tourist perspective of South Dakota when it's not during the rally. Watching you go through Newcastle and your thoughts, my property is 14 miles east of Newcastle in South Dakota. It's just a laid back Mello ride when I go into town. On a weekday there is hardly any traffic on the road and it's so peaceful and quite.
Thanks for the perspective, Vinnie! It was definitely cool seeing all of these areas on a regular week. So peaceful and wide open, with plenty of time to take it all in. Thanks for watching🙌
Another great video guys… Ready for the next one!
Thanks for watching, Ty!!
Love your guys content! First year to Sturgis was last year 2022 and will be there again this year in a month and can’t wait! I’ll be hauling a little tent trailer this year behind my bike, Hope to meet you guys there this year! Thanks for all you do and the inspiration you guys give. See you down the road!
Thanks for the support, Justin! That's badass..we always love seeing trailers behind bikes, pretty cool! We hope to see you out there this year👍
South Dakota is a must for me every year. When we lived in Colorado we would go up all the time just to ride the Black Hills. It is a magical place. I still go to Sturgis even though I live in the OTHER free state of Florida.
Absolutely. A magical place to say the least. From free state to free state, let's go!!!
Thanks for watching 🤘
Amazing video...told my son you ready to ride to Mt. Rushmore next yr.....1300 miles from Houston....I can't wait...great video guys as always....
We're about the same distance, that'll be awesome to do a father and son trips to one of the most scenic areas in the country! Truly awesome to see.
Thanks for watching, Dave 👍
Yep went with a friend a few years ago at the end of June, had a awesome time 🤠👍😎
Good stuff!! Definitely cool to see without the rally. Thanks for watching, Northrider 🤘
Josh was pretty happy about that cocktail, 😂
Haha you know it!! Gotta let loose after a 12+ day hour of filming haha 😂
Thanks for watching, Mike!
Looks like an awesome rise and your wives are awesome, food looks great and looking forward for the next one.🤙🇨🇦
An awesome trip for sure! The wives are troopers! We're glad they're always down for whatever weather comes our way. Thanks for watching, see ya on the next one Kevin 🤘
Just love this one , can’t wait for next week 🥇
Thanks, Sean!! Glad you enjoyed it. Some great history coming next week 👍
New to the channel, Love all the camera angles. I live in Rapid City. But the Hills is where it's at.
Thanks for the support!! Glad you're diggin' the shots 🤘
Another great video guys. Love to see you showcasing my state of South Dakota. The Black Hills area rocks. We will be traveling through Sturgis on our way to Glacier this year. It would be great to meet for a beer!
Thanks for watching, Pat!! We love SD, especially the Black Hills, and this trip made us appreciate the area even more. Black Hills AND Glacier in one trip?..that's how you do it! We hope to see ya down the road!
@@2LaneLife we live in SE South Dakota and have to go through the Hill to get to Glacier.

Another great video. Following along closely our group of 5 bikes is heading out in 2 weeks. Having never been there this is great information.
Thank you. Enjoy the journey there and take it all in!
Kool Guys I always stay at the Whitetail Court. I have a banner from the Boars Nest it was on the back side of a sign in the yard at the hotel . Hangs in my shop. Around Bend Oregon out !
Awesome! We’re jealous. 🤘🤘
I was there a couple years ago not during rally and let me tell you it is beautiful out there, theres is great riding areas a lot of the local shops have motorcycle maps showing you the best riding routes and its beautiful and fun out there
We loved it non-rally.
Can't wait until next year I'll be in the area Thks for showing some great places to see 👍👍😎😎🔥🔥
Same here!! Thanks for watching, John!! Such an incredible area 👍🙌
Did the same ride from So. Cal to Sturgis 10 days ago. going north out of Rawlins (287-220) we encountered the worse cross winds I ever encountered, My son and I were riding Goldwings and it blew us around as if we were on dual sports
Dang!1 We hit some pretty gnarly winds (some f the worst we've experienced in the past few years) on this trip as well right through there as well. The bikes were leaning like crazy wresting with the wind, that's for sure. Glad to hear you guys made it home safe 👍
@@2LaneLife thanks and good luck to you
Thanks for sharing I love the riding experience videos. Me and the wife ride 2up all the time but not the the long haul yet. 400 miles a day is the longer rides. I live in Louisiana so we have to go into Arkansas or Mississippi for really good areas to ride. Keep making videos very inspiring for traveling.
Thanks for coming along for the ride, Dave! Glad to hear you two are out living life on the 2Lanes. Thanks for the support👍
I really miss home. The blackhills are beautiful. Thanks for takin us along for the ride!👍
They are the best!!
Never stop what you are doing! Awesome videos!
We'll keep them coming!! Thanks, Samuel!
Another great vlog, hit that like button for the guys. It takes a lot to make these videos and less than one second to hit that thumbs up!!!!👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Thanks, Humble Greek!! We appreciate it!!
I've been going to the Sturgis Rally since 2004. I took my boys there in 2018and19 during Memorial day weekend. It was awesome showing my boys the sights and going into sturgis and going into sone of the places downtown without thousands of people. Even went to our Glencoe campground site. I learned there are lots of stuff to do with the kids in the Black Hills and surrounding area as well. They loved it and so did I.
Good stuff! Nothing like exploring the black hills with friends and family on two wheels. We can't deice whether we like it better with or without the rally!
Thanks for watching 👍
@@2LaneLife I like it about the same without the rally with my kids vs during the Rally hanging with my pals and getting to see the rest of the Sturgis Family. We have quite a large group of people that meet up from all over the country every year.
The best burgers in the hills are at the Burger and Bun Co. in Custer. Honorable mention is Sickie's in Rapid City
Looks like we'll have another stop to make next time we're in the area! Thanks for watching 🤘
Nice. FNG Crazy to ride in that weather, but more power to ya! Safe Travels.
All a part of the journey! Thanks for watching, Terry 👍
My god!! I’m glad I subscribed to your UA-cam videos, it’s been many many years, almost to many to count, since I’ve been out to Montana and surrounding area, so enjoyed the views. Thank you and ride safe 😊
Thanks for the support, Dale!! We love that region of the country and can't wait to make it back. Ride safe out there!😎
I'd be interested to see the amount of layers you guys have on at those temps, and a rain gear review
Check out our packing videos.
Another great addition to your ride library! Always enjoy your ride documentaries, especially when you bring the ladies along. My wife loves to go on our trips, but not so much in bad weather! Your wives are troopers to hang in there through all the weather you encountered. As always, ride safe!
Thanks Jeremy!! That was a helluva ride, and great to be pulling into the Black Hills with a little weather to wake up the soul! Glad you're digging the travels, we're happy to be able to share them. We'll share that with the wives, thanks for the inspiring words!
Real nice ride and video. Keep 'em coming !
Thanks for coming along for the ride Alan!! Plenty more on the way 🤘
It truly is what America is the locals will talk to anybody I love out there every American needs to take a trip out there But I can't do the snow it snows a lot out there You guys Rock!
That’s why we love her. Small town 2Laners everywhere!
Thanks for sharing. Headed there next month.
You got it Bruce!!
I like the black hills better before the rally last time I was there June of 18 another great video thanks for sharing 🤘🤘🇺🇸🇺🇸
It was something else, that's for sure! A totally different place without the rally. Thanks Jim 🤘🇺🇸
Great video boys. Loved this one, nothing like a nice warm place to be in the evening and sharing stories, good food and drinks with close friends and loved ones who made the ride with you. Just did the Mackinaw City rally with my Son, Daughter and Son in law, what a great ride. Keep the great rides coming.
It's the perfect place to do it, that's for sure! Sounds like a great time. Nothing like getting out there with family and friends! Thanks for the support 🤘
Thank’s for sharing again your great adventure. Another good ride except for the weather change (I am a fair weather ride myself). Can hardly wait till next episodes glad I can be along with you. Jimbo&Helen
Thanks for coming along for the ride! This was a fun day for sure. Luckily the weather was short lived, and we got pretty lucky the rest of the trip. See ya on the next one! 👍
Watching your bike adventures really makes my day used to love to ride then retired and life seemed to get much busier with other things and with health issues I had to sell my Harley Ultra but life goes on. Hope you guys keep on making adventures and videos so that those of us that can no longer ride can still get our bike fix.
Thanks for sharing Terry. We’re thankful we can help in some way.
Great video thanks for sharing.👍🏍🇺🇸
You got it!!
This is the coolest trip you guys have done. I retire in 14 months and this is the trip I want to do after I retire. Thanks so much for filming this trip.
It feels like it!! Thanks for the support, Scott! Glad you're enjoying the series so far 👍
Definitely recommended. We hope you can see it for yourself!
Sturgis is definitely on my bucket list. Now I’m starting to think maybe go when the rally isn’t going on. Thanks for sharing.

I've been saying for several years that I want to go to/through Sturgis in the off season... After watching your video, I guess I don't have to now. 😆. JK makes me want to make the trip all the more!
Haha definitely worth the trip!! The video doesn't quite do it justice, you'll have to go see it for yourself 😎
Always a great watch. I hate to say, I was thinking about not going this year to the rally. But, your video pumped me up and I have changed my mine. Be safe
That's what we like to hear!! Glad we could sway ya back into going! Thanks for watching, Joe 👍
You guys just get better and better ! I hardly recognized Deadwood with the streets so empty. The weather video of the changes was really awesome. Boarshead had my mouth watering !! THANKS for sharing !! Its 97 degrees here in my part of TEXAS so I really enjoyed your ride !!!
Thanks for the support, Paul!! It is pretty crazy to see the area without all of the bikes. Deadwood was hoppin' still, but Sturgis looked like a ghost town compared to the busy streets during rally.
The Boar's Nest is one of our favorite stops, that's for sure! See ya on the next vid 👍
Always love the back to basic riding videos and great to hear Josh getting in on the conversations. He no longer the silent partner. Lol. Looking forward the the rest of the series. Safe travels 🤘
Gotta love hitting the road! it was great to be able to check everything off the list on this one,, heavy miles, food, convos, interviews, and a bit of weather! Thanks for the input! Maybe we'll keep him around haha. Thanks Darrell 🤘

Thanks for sharing your more in depth videos of riding destinations. Going to Sturgis for the first time this year with a group of riding friends. Staying in Lead just so we can spend time going through Deadwood. See you guys down the road.
You got it. Enjoy the journey there as well!!
I was out in the Sturgis area last fall. Amazing place. Going out there again in September. Sturgis will be a trip I will do every year. Love the videos. Looking forward to the up coming Sturgis without the rally videos.
Right on! We'd love to see if during fall as well. The color has got to be phenomenal. Should be cool in September, maybe catching some residual riders after the rally without the roads being too crowded. Glad you're enjoying the videos, thanks for watching!
This is excellent. Went to the rally last year and stayed in Deadwood. Love the area. Followed the map routes, including the Badlands. Looking forward to your future episodes.
Thanks, Bill!! Good stuff. We're staying in Deadwood this year, which we're looking forward to vs. staying near main St. in Sturgis. Plenty more to come, thanks for the support 👍
Great video, as always 😎
Thanks Tom!! 🙌
Great video! Keep up the great content.
Thanks, Honkytonk_Harley, will do!
Been to deadwood two weeks before the rally great time glad you are doing this so more people wil go and enjoy it
An awesome place to see that time of year! Everyone seems to be enjoying it so far, thanks for watching Brian!
Awesome video guys, always look forward to seeing your new adventures!
Thanks for tuning in, Richard! Glad you're enjoying the ride 🤘
Awesome show!
Thanks, Mike!!
absolutely love the vid. what a great perspective, without the rally. Definitely checking out the Boars Nest next time we're riding the black hills. And great that you got weather, seems like the weather is an ever evolving situation in the black hills, last rally got hail riding back from Crazy Horse. Ride safe and lookin forward to watching the videos, playing catch up.
Thanks BaggerzLife, glad you enjoyed it! Plenty more where that came from in this series. The weather can come and go in 5 minutes, but it keeps ya on your toes! Thanks for watching👍
Totally love watching your videos, very inspiring!
Thank you Michael, we appreciate it!
Awesome show y'all! Keep 'em coming!
Thank you sir!! Plenty more on the way 👍
YEAH GUYS! miles of smiles here. that music the first 3 segments was great riding music. the young lady on back giving the thumbs up----"perfect" peace and tranquility, says it all. i haven't been to Deadwood YET! but that is where i want to spread my ashes when i die. the history of that city is beyond compare. that was a great ride. the beauty of the west is magnificent. oh yeah, the music coming into Deadwood, was just a little too mellow. until next time.
Miles of smiles for sure!!One of those songs was one of our buddies, Steve Lee, who has a song "Rollin' Across America" which we think suits our vibe to a T! The ladies sure do love traveling on two wheels, that's for sure!
We're right there with you, the Black Hills are incredible 👍
@@2LaneLife yeah, that was a great song!! i think it was a snippet either before or after that one. either way, it was ALL GREAT! i have 11 months, but this video makes me want to load up and head it west now.
Entertaining vid, beautiful scenery and the Boar's Nest interview was cool.
Thanks for watching, Ken!! Glad you enjoyed it. The Boar"s Nest is definitely one of our favorite stops
