Wet and Windy Coastal Hike and Beach Camp. Norfolk Coast Path, Part 7 - Sea Palling to Caister.

  • In this video, I am finally back on the trail, walking the final leg of the Norfolk Coast Path. A very wet day and soaked to the skin, I make my way along the coastline, passing hundreds of Grey Seals gathered on the beach, through the sand dunes dotted with wartime bunkers and defences and finally past the popular seaside villages of Winterton, Scratby and Hemsby.
Cold, wet and weary and hungry, I eventually find a place at the back of the beach to set up my tent and take refuge from the weather - what a day! Some hot food inside me and I was ready to climb into my sleeping and get warm - the only option to dry out my wet clothing was to sleep in them - not a nice prospect, but at least they’ll be dry by morning.
Despite the weather, it was a fantastic walk - some of this stretch feels very wild - the dunes and sea to one side and stunted birch woodland to the other with the path finding through the rough ground between. The seals were also a huge highlight - gathered in large numbers - adults on the beach and their pups dotted along the sea defences and amongst the dunes.
In part two, I continue south, towards the busy seaside town of Great Yarmouth and beyond to the end of the trail at Hopton. And thankfully, much better weather!
I hope you enjoy the video, thanks for watching!

Drove up to that bit of coast the day that wet weather gave way to something much nicer. Glorious sunshine and a wonderful Wolf Moon rising in Earth's shadow over the North Sea just as the sun was setting. Amazing colours.

Simon thank you so much for the hiking videos. First being a Texan in the US I am interested in the English countryside, which you feature nicely with good narration. However what is the most satisfying is the view of the trail from the chest mounted GoPro, and hear your footsteps. I have been in a wheelchair for almost four years since I lost my right foot. Your videos feel like I am exploring with you and it is wonderful. ATB !!!

It’s a fantastic walk which I’d recommend to anyone. I did it a few years ago thankfully in slightly better weather. The seals were a highlight of the walk. My friends and I did cheat as we stayed in accommodation every night so full respect for braving the weather and then camping. Thanks for a great video.

I think you had the better idea - a hot radiator to dry my clothes on, a hot shower, a warm bed and a pint or two in the local sounds much nicer than sleeping in my soggy clothes in my soggy tent and waking up to frost over everything 🥶😂

'Nutritional yeast whatever that is' ! I love your videos, but guess you don't hang out with any vegans. Nutritional yeast aka nooch is a wonderful addition to savoury meals, adding a cheesy/nutty flavour. It looks like fish food flakes, but honestly even for a meat eater will enhance your food. Sprinkled on beans on toast or avacado on toast it's lovely. Masses of B vitamins & zinc. Loved seeing the seals in this video and your no nonsense approach to it's freezing & wet but I'll camp anyway. Keep up the good work Simon; look forward to your future escapades.

Unsure why but got a bit of a bad vibe from Hemsby, it was super busy the day we walked through it and was expensive to park, we were just having a look around that day.
On our last day before returning back to Glasgow we walked from Winterton along to Caister, went into the big caravan site and had a few beers and a cone for Kylo the dog, he loves a cone.
Was a decent walk there and back along the sea edge, well most of it and it was such a nice day - 16th September.
It was a bit of a culture shock when I got home, nice and peaceful down there.
    Massive thanks again Simon

Thanks for talking seal safety! I grew up on that coastline with family still there, and more and more people flock to see them every winter - not everyone cares enough or has the common sense to keep their distance, and the volunteer wardens can only do some much across that many miles. Still go camping at Waxham Sands most summers, and those dunes in Caister saw many nights of underage boozing when I was a teenager! Lovely to see it all on UA-cam watched by thousands. Great video.

That was a real pleasure to watch Simon end to end. I've been meaning to make it over - glad I did. Only a few things to say. Hey, I carry a light weight brolly on my hikes. For those who feel that way it's no good for the image but for the practical types it's a real game changer. When the winds are favorable and its pissing down I'm happy as Larry under there and I prolong my gear. I have a video called: 5 Advantages of Using an Umbrella Backpacking - it's a good one. Well, them seals were awesome to see. I never knew Norfolk had so many. Fantastic hike - I look forward to part 2 now. Peace. Mark

The post apocalyptic world of the winter seaside town with it's closed funfairs and the deserted rain soaked streets...the valley, mans valiant but ultimately futile attempt to hold back the tide, as he probably did in not so far off Doggerland 7000 years ago.
Nice, and aside from the weather easy walking coast path. Went to Great Yarmouth in 1985, never again...

Good video . The dinner !! ??? This is very interesting . What was the chicken texture like ????? I think I walked by your camping spot today. Not far from the Californian steps .? Lovely beaches. Alas, sometimes you come across dead seals . Not good . We came to this neck of the woods by accident . We wish to leave.

Great video Simon. Reminds of the walk I did on the coastal path in Kent a few weeks back. Rain, fog and 30mph winds! Also not as flat as Norfolk!! Fun on top of the White cliffs!
Also nutrional yeast is a dry flake with a cheesy, nutty taste that vegans use. Also known as nooch!

I know those hills in Kent well (Dover/Folkestone area) - very exposed up there!

Loved the seals! When I was in Canada they were referred to as ‘Rock Sausages’ or ‘Orca-derves’ 😉

Happy New Year Simon, thanks for sharing the final stages of your Norfolk Coast hike. The weather looks very grim hats off to you for braving a cold wet night in your tent. The seals look happy.
I bet it looks completely different in the summer months.
