Phew. 3 and a half hours long. 3 years in the making. 30 locations visited. 100 sources used. 15 hours upload time. Delighted to finally have this out there. I’ll sort out a detailed bibliography and list of sources I used once I have recovered my mind a little... cheers all. Don’t forget to like and comment if you enjoyed this vid as it helps the algorithm to make it worthwhile and makes more projects like this one possible in the future. If you enjoyed it consider subscribing for 100+ other vids I’ve already made plus tons more epics in the future. Hopefully soon I should be able to travel overseas again and widen the focus out a bit from Britain once again!! Cheers for watching. Catch y’all next time.

I studied History, Archaeology, Celtic Civilisation and Classical Civilisation at the University of Glasgow, with a lot of focus on the transitions from Late Antiquity through to the High Middle Ages, and did a course that covered the Welsh poetry covered here, and several on the Anglo-Saxon world. all under some of the leading scholars in these fields.
I can say with some authority then, that this is a colossal work for one person to achieve. Even knitting these threads together into a coherent written narrative would be a massive challenge, let alone single-handedly producing a 3 and a half hour film that even someone with a casual interest could enjoy.. The scale and scope of such a tale is enormous and exceptionally difficult to understand, and yet you have made it easily digestible.
I will recommend this video as a starting point for anyone wishing to understand the "Dark Ages", and indeed for any scholar of the period to enjoy. Wonderful, wonderful piece of work. Bravo!

When Simon Schama's 'History of Britain' series was released on the BBC at the start of the Millennium it was hailed as a major TV event. In his series he goes from the fall of Roman Britain to the age of Alfred the Great in about two minutes.
Now, for free, around 20 years later we can watch a documentary that's over three hours long just about that same era that Schama brushed over in a few short paragraphs. That's truly amazing. Thanks for your work.

    This. Was. FANTASTIC.
You took one of the most difficult periods in western history - one where historians know so little - and made a THREE HOUR documentary out of it. You taught me *everything*. I seriously barely knew *any* of this - and I spent a huge part of my history major on emphasizing in Medieval Studies. I took at least one course on Britain in Late Antiquity/Early Middle Ages, attended countless lectures, and read who knows how many books, and you blinded me with an entire course (or more) of material that was entirely new to me.
What you set out to do with this documentary was a superhuman effort, and you did it with flawless style.

The mythos, the presentation, the era, the wonder, the speculation, the imagining, the simple truth that entire worlds (however small) can be lost or altered by the stroke of a pen is somewhat maddening & riveting. It teeters on defiance of the imagination. Yet there so equally defiant stand the ruins and records.

@Orbán Viktor Mihály There is so much history that most will never hear of or understand. I thought the Dark Ages were called such because there weren't many historians and not much was known. Knowing now that it was literally dark for generations because of whatever nature threw at the human race; volcanoes, meteors, plagues and incomprehensible weather conditions. This is an amazing body of work. I'm delighted to know more of the land where I was born in post-war Britain at Burderop Park R.A.F., Swindon. Growing up in West Texas I learned the history of these lands and not much besides the history of the European settlers. Not much of the history of those peoples that came here and made a new civilization. Thank you for the knowledge. Thank you from a one-time Medieval History student at university. I enjoyed the blending of scenery, archaeology, old texts, and the annals of the kings and kingdoms that came and went. Having read Bede, and being familiar with the expansion and uniting of the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms, it was good to hear the contemporary British, Pictish, and Irish/Scottish history -- where the ebbs and flows of the north -- and intermarriages between Celtic and Anglian dynasties -- mirror what happened in the south ... where you get, for example, a "West Saxon" leader with the curiously Welsh-like name of Caedwealla. It is interesting that the Northumbrian nobility, just before Bede's time, included people like Cedd and Chad (who became prominent bishops and saints) -- whose names are Celtic, not Germanic. This seems to indicate some serious intermixing of Celts and Anglo-Saxons, even at the highest levels of society. The Angles' language -- with a fair dose of Norse influence -- won out culturally, but that does not mean that every Celtic inhabitant had been replaced by an Anglo-Saxon immigrant. Britain reflects *many* successive waves of influence, and the history you relate is as much the heritage of modern Britain as the history of the Anglo-Saxons (as interesting as that is too).

Simply amazing!! This is 3 and a half hours long but it sure doesn't feel like it...I've just watched all of it in one sitting and was left wanting more! Moreover, as I write this it is 4 am in Denmark and I started the documentary after midnight, thinking I would see the first 40 minutes, perhaps an hour before I fell asleep. Instead it literally kept me awake the whole night long! The topnotch quality never dropped once, the pace never once missed a beat and the time flew by.
    Truly well done!!
Ps. It is fascinating to me how these wars for Britain started in earnest with the new, germanic people arriving at its shores from modern day Netherlands, northwestern Germany and Denmark, essentially as raiders and refugees before the Franks and the Danes, only for the similar pattern to, sort of be repeated a mere century or so after the situation had somewhat calmed down.
    793. these same Danes who in a way pushed the Jutes and the Angles from the Jutland peninsula arrive to Lindisfarne and the wars for Britain start again. Our histories are so intertwined!

Finally! A comprehensive look at the most mysterious period in british history since Julius Caesar paid us a visit... it's great to see information i've only previously read snippets of in books or novels get a coherent chronogical narrative along with loads of things i'd not heard before - great stuff! Much Appreciated...

Content like this is exactly what the so called History channel is supposed to be about instead of selling out to reality TV. What the hell does Ice Road truckers have to do with history, exactly? Ya ice road truckers should have no place on history. In fact alot of the channels now days have shows on them that should not be on those channels but other ones. I dont like that it doesnt make sense. I dont have cable anymore, dosnt make sense to have it anymore. Plus with no time restrictions and creative restrictions these guys can make real proper history shows more qualified than the shows on bbc history and other channels.
