- Recently I was lucky enough to be offered a boxed Amiga 500 for only the price of postage, the only catch being it didn't work.
Well you know me I jumped at the chance and so this week its time to get the old Amiga out of the box and see what's wrong with it.

I miss my Amiga, great video, I like the fact you kept the section in when you pulled Agnus out. Hats off to you sir.
We all make mistakes and I don't see the point in trying to hide them, at least with me doing it others will now know to either be more careful or simply just push Agnus out of her bed.
Slowly but surely, Sunday's becoming my favorite day of the week because of CRG's videos :)

A500 was the best amiga model in my humble opinion..i have 3 of them at the moment...thank you for the video and best wishes to you.
I like that you're looking after the RF shields. I'm not a fan of people chucking them or even bending/cutting/whatever. It's part of the machine and if it can go back in and look nice it should.
It's also the nice thing to do as most computers create RF interference which can affect radio users.

Great work getting the a500 and the memory expansion to work my 2 a500,s are my favourites 1 was built from parts any many years ago the other was the first thing i bought when i had money from working so i have owned my first a500 a long time ,i have had many others over the years and sold a lot of them on .

Nice watching video! Who knows, you could try to solder back the clock components and add a CR2032 holder to it. Waiting for your RGB2HDMI video too. Cheers, M

Could try the refitting all the parts for the clock, would just need to look back at what parts I need. Probably could get it working but not overly fussed if I'm honest.
I always loved my A500's keyboard. It was just smooth as butter. :) It helped me all the way through college... I still have it, but it's stored for posterity :)
Yes the 500s keyboard is nice to type on, think it feels a bit better than the 1200s keyboard. Just be weary of leaky batteries in Amigas stored away. As you seen in this one it was the expansion battery that was leaking. Best to at least pull out any such expansions.
My Rock Lobster had the holes under the Agnus chip but the PLCC socket had a solid underside. It was quite rare, apparently. Naturally I destroyed the socket and the motherboard during the extraction with a mallet and steel hole punch...

That'll do it for sure :). We've all done stupid stuff, like that time many years ago when I really really wanted to get inside my gamegear but didn't have the security bit. I got there in the end but did crack the screen in the process.

Thanks for showing me how hard it is to remove the chips. I think I’d leave mine alone if it fires up 😅
Its actually rather easy to remove the chips, just so long as you're not an idiot like me haha
Actually, I recently used two tootpicks to help me popping out the plcc chips from the backside of the socket (all the plcc chips of my Bridgeboard A2088), by gently tap w a rubber hammer. Nice and clean. However, it's a strange beast, as I had not got success for the board to work. Need help maybe.

I was so envious with upgraders with an RTC, now `i`m glad i didn't bother, just a small trapdoor board with on/off switch
Just need to get a better battery system than the vartas. =( Having to update the date every time is such a pain.

I'm going to be adding a hdmi pi board but trying to build it myself. If that goes well I may then try to build my of tf accelerator for it.
@ 10:13 I hate those cheap PLCC extractors, my Agnuses also have that scar on them and you can't push them out from the bottom of an A2000 as there are no holes in the PCB.
I found that the prongs on the extractor bottom out in the socket before the hooks can get underneath the chip. I filed some material from the tips of the prongs and it works better now but you still have to take care with them.
Yeah it seems these extractors just don't get a decent grip of the chip. I know the chip works fine but still annoyed it got scratched up.
Did you scan the board both sides at the highest resolution? would have been fairly easy to re-create the board in a pcb program and get it printed out. PCBWay would be one place to get some made. Excellent work with the 500 btw :D
It's something I've often thought about but have yet to look into board design, even if it is just copying an existing one. Something like the memory expansion would be a simple thing to start with. I'll keep it in mind for the future.

I hate those plcc chip pullers with a passion. Nasty tendency to skip on the last moment.
Regarding the RF shields, I keep mine in storage, but cannot install them on my amigas (500, 600 and 1200) because of the internal expansions, and I certainly am not going to cut them.
Also, my A1200 and A600 still have the radial caps I´ve used 9 years ago to replace the smd ones (also complicates the use of the RF Shield). I really need to install the polymer caps I have for them.
use electrical lubricate on the socket before you pull the chips you may save them exess violence :-) and a dip chip puller, is better then a screwdriver for sure, cost a penny from china\ebay.
“Wera (or Wiha) chip lifter” to avoid the sort of problems at 9:30 :)

Thanks Gadget, happy to have another 500 in the collection although gutted by the big scratch along Agnus. It happens though and lesson learnt, push it out next time!

@@CRG Yup that's what the holes are there for. xD Though you're lucky with this Rev 5. On my Rev 5 the Agnus gets loose if you sneeze at it.
contact cleaner first, let it sit for a few minutes, then Agnus will come out much easier ;)

Watch out with that disk drive! Unlike the A500 main board itself, the panasonic drives contain SMD caps which leak and have to be replaced.

I threw my Amiga 500+ in the trash for about 18 years ago. I got two SupraDrives with memory and hard drives and 3 external floppy drives and about 4000 floppy disks 😢
We all have stories like that. One of my regrets is binning a dual CPU Pentium 2 rig that also had SLI voodoo 2s. What was I thinking!
The Box was in very good condition --- thought it might have been a repro...
Original box and yeah in great condition. I'm not usually one for boxes, I prefer to have the machines on display but they are nice to keep should I ever need to store it.
Did you sell your original A500 to fund the purchase of something else? In retrospect, was it worthwhile?
Not really, I sold it a good few years ago before I really started collecting. Think I sold it for £40 just which at the time I was happy enough with but looking back, probably should have kept it.
Which power supply did you use for the. Amiga, not the old one I'm sure?
I've always just used an original Amiga PSU. Unlike C64 power supplies I've never seen one of these blow up to the point were it could damage the computer. In fact in all my time messing with Amigas I've only ever seen one dead original psu.
@@CRGOkay,, thank you. That's good news that the old brick is dependable, but I'll run a meter over mine to see if it still pumps out the required voltage after decades in the attic. I still have my old A500 which is probably the same release type. It doesn't boot up and the drive just clicks continually. Must do a teardown and see if the infamous battery leak has occurred. Hopefully not. Check out RMCs Amiga trash to treasure vids if you haven't already. Your channel is great by the way, which I just discovered and subbed to today. Good luck to you and I'll recommend it to others as a fellow Norn Iron man.
Always great to hear from another local fan of these vintage systems. If yours is just the A500 there's no battery on the motherboard but probably would be on on an expansion. Even just try pulling that out to see if it boots. The A500s are generally bulletproof but good luck getting it up and running.
If you're stuck at all just shout and I'll help were I can or at least point you in the right direction.
I'm very familiar with Neil's work over on RMC. He runs a great channel and that museum he's built looks amazing. Maybe one day we'll get something like that here.
