Is this TF1260 or rev6 060 faulty?

  • When Gerry reached out to ask if I would take a look at his TF1260 with its rev6 060 that's acting up, well, I offered to help. After all who wouldn't like the chance to play with a rev 6 68060, but, is there actually anything wrong with it?

    It's been brought to my attention that the Liv2 guide doesn't work with the latest version of the pi os.
    If you're trying to setup a pi for programming cplds use this guide instead. Written by LinuxJedi:

    Great info Glen! I had an issue with a Rev 5 68060 TF1260 not liking cold booting and needing a power cycle. That new firmware fixed that issue. My 1200 has the timing fixes so hopefully the firmware or the timing will sort the instability here 🤞🏻

    • @CRG
      @CRG  4 місяці тому +3

      That's what I'm thinking, strange that Gerry said it was just this particular 060 but hopefully the firmware update and a timing fix will get it sorted.

      Can you overclock your Rev5 reliably? My Rev 5 can't even handle 58 MHz for more than 5 minutes😢 this is with the 2nd version of the firmware.

    • @CRG
      @CRG  4 місяці тому

      @@SJSsesco I've had my LC chip at 94mhz and it seems fine although not ran it for long at that speed as I don't have cooling for it. Won't do 100mhz though, just locks up as soon as you select it.

      My TF1260 with 68060 Rev 1 can overclocked to 62.5 Mhz. My A1200 rev 1D4 has its timing fix.

    ramdom crashes is usually due to no timingfix done. AND/or bad 68060 lib installed..
    (oh and that special LC version of libs. SKIP it! :) use mmulib instead )

    • @CRG
      @CRG  4 місяці тому +1

      Thanks for the info Chucky. I'll pass it onto Gerry who owns the card and advise he get the timing fixes done, plus download the mmulib. I've not used it much but since installing mmulib on my machine the LC chip in my card has been running fine so yeah, it seems to be the better option.

    • @RabidGerry
      @RabidGerry 4 місяці тому

      Hi Chucky, it is my CPU and my card that Glen is testing in the video. To be more specific, the issue is that the card will boot with that CPU installed but then not boot again after this. So it might boot say 1 out of 15 -20 attempts. When it does boot it runs fine. To put things into perspective. When I swap out this CPU for another Rev 6, the TF1260 runs fine and I do not have the same problem of only booting occasionally. So this is why I sent that specific 060 to Glen to test as for me it will boot once, then a black screen on next attempt.

    Whilst I've never worked on an Amiga, I can recommend performing any fixes to improve timing signals. I had an early model MegaDrive and my 32X wouldn't work properly, with the 32X eventually experiencing rolling video and crashes.
    Turns out SEGA put out a Technical Note mentioning that one of the clock signals on the board needed to be cleaned up by modifying the board. Once I did that the 32X was rock solid.

    • @CRG
      @CRG  4 місяці тому +3

      Yeah its always a good idea to carry out those fixes. The most basic version of it on the Amiga is very easy to do, its just getting to the parts you need to remove. Thanks for the info on the Sega. I wasn't aware of that but very interesting.

    If you have many directory windows open on an Amiga i think you can shift+click (if i remember it correctly after not using an Amiga for 30 years) on the close button and all previous windows will close. That is much faster than clicking on 5 to 6 windows.

    A 68060 boots with the FPU enabled but interestingly it boots with the superscalar dispatch disabled. The ESS bit in the PCR register needs to be set in software. I assume that the 060 libs do this. Sysinfo must also do it as you get the same reported speed when booting Sysinfo from floppy as you did when running it from the harddrive.

    I saw the other day that the 68040 is still used in new Boeing jets, even the new 737 Max which have been in the headlines. That would imply that Freescale or whoever owns them now still makes them today?

    • @CRG
      @CRG  4 місяці тому +3

      That's cool, I didn't know that and yes you would assume it means it's still in production. Just need Boeing to up their game to the 060 and maybe prices will come down 😂

    • @mark12358
      @mark12358 4 місяці тому +1

      I should still have a bunch of 68040 from the Casablanca video editing times. Maybe I could sell those to Boeing, who knows? 😂😂😂

    Do many applications utilize the FPU or is it going to be mostly like productivity applications? Maybe some modern applications/ports/demos work with it though.
    As for instability I guess could just be some marginal power thing but i dunno how all that works in the Amiga.

    • @CRG
      @CRG  4 місяці тому

      It's not just software that uses fpu but anything compiled for the 060, even if it doesn't use the fpu won't run without it. The main reason I'd want a full chip is to run demos, much like the one I showed in the video. But because of this, the LC or EC variants of the chip without an fpu essentially need to be treated as fast 030s.

    Have 2 TF1260 with 68060 Rev6 , Alpha 1000 (December 2021) and runs great 68060 demos on my A1200’s. See no reason to update to a new firmware update. Update alot with the Vampire V4+ Standalone. Hope that the ACA1260 come out. For me the best card for the A1200 is the Blizzard 1230 IV with 128MB on it.

    Hey! Do you have a separate full can crystal there for the FPU that you are using? Did you make a video of installing that?

    • @CRG
      @CRG  4 місяці тому

      Yes I have a separate FPU on the 1200s motherboard and a separate crystal driving that at 40mhz but that FPU only works when I'm using the 030 accelerator (or no accelerator). Its always disabled with the 060 regardless of being an LC, EC or full chip. There are a couple of videos on it both here ua-cam.com/video/nSZkTYaRy0E/v-deo.html and here ua-cam.com/video/5DYgls1WGAU/v-deo.html

    Does the 68060 really have such a giant die or is it just the package? That's a massive chunk of ceramics compared with 486/Pentium.

      your not kiddin...

    • @CRG
      @CRG  4 місяці тому

      Is it really that much bigger? I must set a 486 on top of it to compare. On the bottom of the chip you can see the can that sits over the die. Its big enough but I'd expect the die to be maybe half that size. I tried looking for an image of one of these decapped but can't find anything.

    Do you have a video showing the modifications you did to the bottom of the board you were talking about?

      You can see it in this video ua-cam.com/video/pF6upvTE8XY/v-deo.htmlsi=jCG0mrL9l-G3X5Zp. Its chaptered but please note in that I fitted a resistor at position E113R. This is not required. The timing fix is just to remove the 2 caps at positions E123C and E125C.

    Amigas are temperamental ladies. The Boing Ball on your screen doesnt seem circular, rather a bit elliptical. Maybe its just my eyes. I am thinking about having a black 2000 EATX built after seeing your system setup for a Lian Li OP11 Dynamic.

    • @CRG
      @CRG  4 місяці тому

      That they are. On the monitor I'm using a gbs8200 with gbs control and yeah I think the image is a little vertical stretched.
      A black eatx2000 will look amazing in that case. I'd love to see a few pictures of it if you get it built.
