I broke a leg off this PLCC packaged FPU so let's fix it

  • I got my 1200 out to test a TF1260 of which the owner is having problems but when I opened it up I thought I should perhaps first tidy up the FPU oscillator mod that I did a while back. No intentions of making a video about it but when I accidently snapped the clock leg off the chip (I had previously lifted this leg) I thought why not pull the camera out and show you that while it may seem like the end, something like this can be easily fixed.

    Ah yes, Lidl, the only place where you can buy eggs and a snowblower in the same trip!

      I must have missed those last time I was in. Would have been handy to get the eggs while I was in there 😂

    I have to admit I was rather mortified watching you grind away that chip! Nevertheless, you've successfully repaired it and deserve kudos for a job done.

    Did exactly the same thing to an 8375A Agnus from an Amiga A500+... Managed to do a similar repair and got it working but with the leg that broke off and a blob of epoxy over the repair. I used one of narrow metal milling tools rather than the stones. It's now in my main Amiga as I'm never likely to need to remove it!

      I've had to do it to an 8375 as well, the Agnus in my EATX2000 has a leg repaired although I didn't bother with the epoxy. I wanted to use the stone as I thought it might be a little more gentle on the copper once I got down to it but I'm sure the metal milling tool would work just as well if you are careful.

    Nice job! I may had added a little UV Glue, or JB Weld to that wire and the chip. I must have missed the video where that broke. I will look it up.

      The breaking of it wasn't in a video. I wasn't intending to break it but I was just trying to tidy up the wires when it came off and I thought let's make a video.

    Sounds of this little machine brought up flashbacks of me being at dentist and removing the tooth.

      Don't remind me, I had to bet a tooth pulled a couple of weeks ago and yeah there was some intensive drilling involved.

    I bought three 40MHz 68882s off old eBay for a tenner a couple of years ago. I was expecting this to be a custom chip where you have no choice but to try that kind of thing, but here replacements are not that expensive.

      I was considering just binning this chip since I have a spare here but for this use case I'd need to bend the pin again and probably risk breaking it off again so I thought it a good excuse to so how I'd go about a repair like this. I have had to do it to a custom before, the 8375 in my EATX 2000 has a repair like this but at that time I never put it on video.

    That is why I don't like lifting and bending pins, I always fear of breaking the pin. With DIP sockets you can build a socket-tower-adapter easily, but these fancy plcc sockets,...

      @CRG  4 місяці тому

      Yep it's very much a risk, in fact I'd go so far as to say with these chips you get one chance to bend it. Once it's lifted that's it, if you tried to bend it back it'll mostly like snap off.

    Lidl is in The Netherlands too. Their “Parkside” tools are ok… skip the soldering iron though ;)

      Its fine for what it is. This rotary tool gets very little use so I'm sure it will last long enough for me. Funny you mention the soldering iron though, I did have it years ago (long before this channel) and it managed to burn through its own tip as in it literally fell off 😆

      @@CRG I had a little repair myself a few minutes ago. I have a KungFuFlash cartridge that I own quite some time, but just used it a few times yet. And it stopped working totally , I wanted to update the firmware, but it did not work anymore. I opened up the case and found the microchip not soldered correctly, way too less solder and quite a few pins were totally loose. I resoldered the chip under the microscope, that was a pain in the a...... because the solder did not get into a propper connection with the pins and the board, don't know what crap was used, but finally i managed to get it done. The cartridge works perfect again and got the newest firmware, and me idiot wondered, why I had so much trouble with that damned cart... 😀 Greetings, Michael

    a drop of flux on the wire plastic coating will allow the iron to melt it
