Replacing my damaged TF1260 edge connector - mini fix

  • A few weeks ago while working on a shorted A1200 I tried to boot it with my TF1260 in the trap door and since the board didn't have a chamfered edge I managed to wreck the edge connector on the TF1260. No problem, its only 150 pins and replacement edge connectors are readily available so can I swap it out without causing any more damage?

Any video with a 68060 in it gets a free like. Even if it's only an LC... :) But jokes aside, good repair. I also have such a 1200 board, that is very picky about the card position and angle.

Ah the patience my friend that only us Amigans can truly appreciate👍😁

Angled connector which is damaged beyond use, well that seems like a perfect candidate to just cut the pins with a side cutter and extract all the pins one by one, by heating them on one side and tweezing them on the other. From the more exposed rows to the less exposed ones. It's still a lot of work, purely because of how many pins these are, but also so much easier than trying to free up every single pin in-place.

Honestly, I've often found holding loose pins with tweezers much more fiddly than in-place desoldering. Though I say that from DIP chips, not huge connectors like this. And also my knuckles are definitely less-tolerant than many others', of holding tightly onto small things for more than a few minutes.

Oh, that was some sight to behold with those crushed pins. And yeah, edge connectors... I remember having a Final Cartridge for our Commodore 128 which never worked while fully inserted; always had to go a few mm out before it worked.

I don't know why its so fussy to be honest. Must just be a poor connection from those new slots cause I don't remember having these problems when I had the classic accelerators years ago.

Hello CRG, clean the amiga connector with printing paper, as long as the paper turns black the connector is dirty.
    Finally, use IPA.

If I order a PCB with ISA pads I'll pass it over light sandpaper along the edge at 45 degrees both sides to bevel it.

Exactly why I never put my stuff on other people's stuff that I'm repairing...that's just asking for trouble.

I had a problem with my one. After i moved it around to fit a IDE cable. to get it working I have to put a wedge under it by the trap door, it work now I can boot up off the cards IDE port its about 3.5 X faster than the on bord one.

...Sounds like it's the edge connector on the Amiga that needs to be worked on/replaced, to be honest...

6:36 I don't think you should have pushed the pins so long in. The connector should have been flat instead. It looks like the connector is installed askew.

Kinda makes me wonder if that's what led to the original failure too.

Hate jobs like that, especially if theres big ground planes or power rails... if it a problem cut the pins to remove the item then you can dewl with each pin individually instead of all in one go....
