Adam Rupp has won the World Beat Box Championship TWICE!! He’s that good and amazing!
this is some misinfo that's been spread around, Adam hasn't chosen to compete in any beatbox world championships. And Anthony Ray doing the reaction here has watched all the beatbox world championships, so he would recognize him if he had.
There have been 6 beatbox world champions in history. The winners are, in order, Joel Turner, Zede, Skiller, Alem, Alexinho. Don't spread misinformation.
I think I read somewhere, that he was voted best beatboxer, at an a cappella festival… maybe that’s what confuses people 🤷🏻♀️
@@AnthonyRay Thank you for helping in the fight! Adam has said himself in many interviews that he doesn't know where the rumour started, but he hasn't nor intends to compete. It's nice to see someone with a strong voice and influence call people out on spreading misinformation! Much love to you, my friend!
Mr. H, no and not helpful.
He has a drum solo every concert. Everyone looks forward to this. He is a founder of Home Free with his brother, Chris. He has a sweet tenor voice that he rarely shares solo. He is much beloved by all Home Fries. Thanks for checking his skills out.
Adam specifically learned how to play the drums so that he would be very accurate in imitating the sounds. He does way more than just drums well as I know you are starting to realize. What you don't really know is that he is a VERY accomplished singer with a beautiful voice. Adam is the bomb!!!! Great reaction and totally loved your breakdown. So professional and with an awesome amount of respect for his craft. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
He is NOT only a Beatboxer..he is an INCREDIBLE arranger of music ...singer etc.
Case in Point...in Your spare time give a listen/watch to Home Free version of Do You Hear What I Hear"
..arrangement by Adam Rupp.
The guys in the group asked him to tone down...ease up on the difficukt intricacies of the harmonies he puts out !!
Adam Rupp is a big part of why Home Free is what we love. He majored in trumpet in college and is obviously a master of circular breathing.
Home Free originally started having Adam beatbox solo onstage because there were a lot of naysayers who said that Home Free was hiding instruments or otherwise faking it. If they use anything live they'll tell you, like the looper they use when doing Man of Constant Sorrow (also how they did the studio version).
Hope you look into the other members of Home Free doing solo work or collaborations. Tim (the deep bass you love +5 (count them, five) octave range), Austin (the high tenor with the red beard) and Chance (warm smoky baritone/bass voice) all do a lot of solo and collaboration work. Rob (big guy with big beard, lyric tenor) did a VERY unusual thing recently with Austin: Nessun Dorma. Way way outside your interest most likely (as it was for me; not an opera fan) but truly amazing Opera Rob.
I'd have to write a book here to detail all the solo/collaboration work that Tim and Austin have had, and at least a couple of chapters dedicated to Chance.
Your knowledge and experience with beatboxing brought extra value to your reaction. I didn't mind that you could analyze the routines and explain them to us in ways we may not have heard before. Adam is, indeed, skilled and talented. His sense of rhythm is impressive on its own, and invaluable to Home Free's tight harmonies. He does occasionally get spotlighted solos in the group's performances. And, yes, Adam has recently celebrated his 40th birthday, 20 years with HF.
I may not be a HUGE Rap fan, but am a big fan of your beautiful bass voice. Just keep talking -- your reactions are great.
Adam did the arrangement for their cover of "Do You Hear What I Hear" where he's front and center. Even though it's a Christmas song it's still in my top 2 favorites by Home Free. They do have songs where he shines and he is certainly noticed by Home Free fans. Plus he does a solo at every concert. Also, you have to remember that Adam is not a competitor of any beatboxing championships or even in that scene. He's a beatboxer for an A cappella band and you are comparing him the the best in the world. That's pretty impressive (as you said). I really appreciated your analysis of his performance coming from a technical perspective. Thx for the video!
Agreed 👍
Home Free is unique in a way that they don't do a whole lot of crazy a cappella tricks. They are a "Vocal Band" and Adam is key in that with his ability to be a human drum kit. Thay are also lucky since 3 guys that can make legitimate bass notes.
Absolutely love Home Free ... every member is uniquely talented ... they elevate every song they cover ! Their original songs are beautifully crafted and their production is first class ... Adam , the beat boxer, is the glue that holds everything together . But most importantly , these guys have hearts as big as their talent ... and we Home Fries , as their fans are called , love that about them ... they're just good men !
Love Adam Rupp & his insane talent. He is the best out there in my opinion. He simulates the sounds of a drum perfectly. Many drummers have commented on how good he is. He sounds so realistic. His breath control must be crazy. I heard he makes the sounds both while inhaling & exhaling. This was a few years ago & hard to believe but he is even better now. Adam is the glue that holds Home Free together. He is their secret weapon which other a cappella groups can't match.
Austin has called him the heart and the heartbeat of the group. I agree.
Adam does a solo in every Home Free show. The guys are great about changing lead singers and giving Adam the solo so that everyone is showcased. When they decide to do a song, each one sings a little of the lead to see who would be best for that song. I have seen them in concert many times and they are amazing.
Your knowledge of beatboxing made this reaction so much better than others I've seen. Yes, they almost always are dumbfounded, but they don't have the ability to explain things the way you do here. I'm so glad to have seen this reaction!
Adam just turned 41 April 23. He the most amazing Beatboxer. Your should see him live
Home Free absolutely would not exist without Adam. In their early years, he was the one who got all their gigs, handled their budget, connected them with cruise and concert series management, and talked then into sticking it out when everyone else wanted to throw in the towel.
His college degree is in trumpet, but he also plays guitar, bass guitar, piano, keys, and "anything else the band needed" (this was when he was in the worship band at his church). He infamously drove his college roommate to move out by his obsessive practicing of a sound till he got it perfect.
He's never had vocal training like the other guys, so he's uncomfortable singing lead, but if you find a post-pandemic drum solo, you'll find he layers dozens of layers of singing and vocal percussion using a looper in the first part of his drum solo. It's fantastic.
It blows my mind that he can keep this up after a
Performing for an hour, does this and then performs for the rest of the concert!!! His stamina is amazing.
I really enjoyed your reactions. It is awesome when someone that knows their craft and explains it to the rest of us. Keep doing what you are doing!
Thanks for a really good reaction. Loved the analysis by someone who seems to actually know what they’re talking about
Adam Rupp is lots of Home Free fans favorite member.
Adam is incredibly skilled. Home Free doesn’t need instruments when you have Adam. He’s a trumpeter and he taught himself drums so he could replicate a drummer’s movements. He’s won the World Champion Beatboxer title twice I’ve heard. Plus he has a nice tenor voice when he sings. Good reaction Anthony!
So you heard rumors that are not true!
Adam has never competed in Beatbox Championships nor does he ever have a desire or need to.
He has won a couple of harmony sweepstakes best vocal percussionist awards back in the day (one was honorary just for him) and a couple best overall beatboxer awards from the a cappella world.
I keep hearing this rumor about Adam, and no offense to his amazing skills, but participating in beatbox world championships isn’t something he’s chosen to do (they’re all online to watch).
I think it might be because of a badly formatted article that discusses him and a few other beatboxers but isn’t clear when it switches to someone else. I think it mentions Joel Turner winning in two different categories, solo and crew.
@@YnEoS10 Didn’t know that. Thanks
@@tarjaikola Thanks
The thing with Adam is when he takes up something that interests him, he is all in. No half way with him. So when he and his brother started Home Free in the year 2000, Adam was all in on everything. He drove his college roommate nuts with the beatboxing sounds. He also did a huge amount of work in the bookings as well. He not only is an accomplished trumpet player, but he also actually plays drums and bass guitar (I honestly think he can play more but I'm not certain.) He has helped figure out the lights for the shows and is an amazing music arranger. And his intense focus on interests doesn't stop there. He has a massive collection of figures for D&D campaigns that he runs as Dungeon Master. No, Adam never does anything half way. And we Home Fries know it very well.
It's precisely your expertise that people are looking for. So don't hold back on "analysis." I really like that you pointed out his rhythm control. I think he has an extraordinary sense of rhythm. This is especially highlighted in his more recent (2021) EDM-style performance in Sioux City, Iowa. (LtKernelPanic channel). The video you looked at today is from 2017. It's very interesting to see what he's doing more recently -- and how the rhythm is manifest in his bodily movements. (He's also a great dancer, by the way.)
Thx for your reaction
Loved to hear your comments.
I'm 60-70's Rn R er,,, I had a friend turn me on to Home Free... I greatly amazed with t had a friend turn me on to them.... I listen to them a lot.....
It's really interesting to hear someone analyse this from an experienced beat-boxer's perspective. Adam taught himself to beat-box after he, his brother and a school friend first started Home Free, back in 2000, and his emphasis has always been on being the backbone of the group. That said, he can be quite the showman with his solos, and a lot of us have learnt about beat-boxing by following what he does, but if he makes you think that's a drumkit or soundboard in the back of a HF track, he's succeeded.
I had the pleasure of seeing Home Free live and the Adam Rupp beatboxing was one of the highlights of the show. It was pretty long too. They threw humor into their show too which I really loved. Go see them. They are amazing. I'm going again.
Finally, a real analysis of Adam's beat boxing skills! I've seen drummers react to Adam (and they were impressed how much Adam acts and sounds like a drummer), but not by someone as knowledgeable as you about beat boxing. Adam received a degree in trumpet performance. His brother Chris suggested that Adam learn beat boxing for their a capella group they just formed for a church talent show. That was Dec 2000, and the talent show was in Jan 2001. Hence, Home Free was born.
This is what I wanted to say…this might be the first analysis of/reaction to Adam’s beatboxing solo by a beatboxer. I found it fascinating. And very informative. Thanks.
While he's not comfortable taking the lead on songs where they don't need a beatboxer Adam has a beautiful voice and Tim was right when he said in a interview that Adam is the magic of Home Free!!! He seems to know exactly what sounds to add to a song and where and he's taught the others some beatboxing so they can perform certain songs like 9 to 5 live and it's fabulous (even though I like the video best). Adam just continues to hone his craft and always take it up a level. Also he just turned 41
I first came to your channel as a STAY, but I was a Home Fry long before. Love your reactions.
Enjoying your analysis with your knowledge of the subject. I'm learning and that is always good.
Good morning, WOW! I liked that you mentioned skill and practice. Also, giving us (not knowing) an insight of what beatboxing is all about. What amazed me was the breathing and gestering...for how long? An awesome performance. Definitely an art, another gem...👍☝️🖼☝️🎇🤓
9:14 I swear I was just looking up Tom Thum to get the title of one of his videos (whilst watching this one)to recommend him to you, when you mentioned his name! Spooky! 😱 Have you seen his TED talk video where he does a whole jazz band on his own? Love it!
I read somewhere that Adam learned the drums to get the movements and gestures right while beatboxing. His playing the trumpet since he was very young helps a lot in his breath control.
I really enjoyed the technical breakdown!
I think I remember that in addition to actually knowing how to play the drums, he also plays trumpet, which lends itself to breath control, and the mouthwork of beatboxing.
If you haven't yet seen them check out their 9 to 5 videos. I know your interest seems to be beatboxing first but I always recommend their video for Dolly Parton's 9 to 5 with the office setting first. Sort of a good background for the 2 versions of 9 to 5 + Beatboxing Breakdown which is them on stage during a show, recorded from the audience. All five members take turns beatboxing, sort of a 2 by 2 battle. I prefer the first one, with Chris Rupp, only because I think the stage setup and lighting was better. That's on the venue, not the performers. The second one, with Chance instead of Chris, sounds just as fantastic.
Great suggestion! I would love to see your reaction to both the live versions
Adam doesn’t like being on camera while he’s beatboxing. He’s aware that his face can look a little odd while he’s beatboxing and he’s self conscious.
I love Home Free's collaborations also. Try One Voice with Billy Gilman one of the most emotional songs you will ever listen to, American Pie with Don McLean an American classic, Children Where Do I Send Thee with the legendary Kenny Rogers and Don't Laugh At Me a message on bullying.
If you want to hear his skills playing with Home Free there are two tracks I recommend : Some Girls Do & MayDay
His newer solos include using a looper and layering his sounds and includes some singing
He actually learned to play drums, that's why his movements are what an actual drummer would be doing. He is insanely skilled. And on the rare occasions that he DOES sing, he has a beautiful sweet voice. I think he's a little self-conscious because he's not professionally trained like the others.
Been waiting for your reaction to this!
14:00 When a professional says "that takes skill" and "That is impressive."
It's a compliment one does not take lightly.
I'd love to see reactions to beatboxing that explains the techniques.
I'm having a blast! Love Home Free, but goodNESS, your voice, dang!!! Let's go; Home Free, and you, makes my heart happy! ❤
Adam Rupp is in a class all his own he deserves the name Freak of Nature... Adam is like one of the 10 best beatboxers in the world.. Adam taught himself to play drums just to be a better beatboxer this man is Brilliant.. ❤❤❤
Thanks for this. To hear him actually sing and no beatboxing, try 'Helplessly Hoping". An old Crosby Stills and Nash song. Almost requires a moment of silence when it is finished. Thanks again.
In his newest stuff, he incorporates a looping station during part of his solo and does some great sound layering, including a little bit of his singing voice.
I am enjoying your Home Free journey very much. Each of these 5 guys is very talented and Austin, Tim and Chance are doing individual projects. Austin has impressed me with his latest releases.
I think what ive learned from finding homefree and other guys like you is that there needs to be more visibility and respect for beatboxers out there.
Interesting That the audience was clapping in time with the sounds. American audiences don’t tend to do that - as opposed to European crowds. I lived in the Netherlands for a number of years, so I’ve experienced the difference.
I'm pretty sure this was filmed in Germany, so that might be why. (I recognise the channel name.)
He does the harmonica with his hands and mouth
Learned to play drums to look authentic doing this.
Good Lord! I just want him to breathe!!! Saw them live, in March, and literally yelled "breathe"! It's unreal live!!! I'm still recovering, not just him, the whole group!
His dijeridoo(?)..is amazing 😵💫❤️‼️🔥
I was hoping you would do a reaction to an Adam Rupp beatboxing solo. The little bits of beatboxing you did show that you’re not a bad beatboxer yourself. It was not enough to hear if you are good or not, but definitely not bad. Nice to hear the perspective of someone who can hear what exactly Adam is doing.
Old school beatbox sound? Maybe it’s because he learned it from VHS tapes on beatboxing back when they started around 2000. Also, bring a trumpet player most likely he can double and triple-tongue pretty well and that probably helps his speed.
I haven't seen this one. Great sound i could hear the bass alot more in this video
Man of constant sorrow
I had to respond to this reaction. I know this is an older vid, but I had to tell you how much I appreciate YOUR appreciation of Adam's skill. It takes another creator to see the skill in another person. You have always been honest and appreciative with VoicePlay and Home Free when you react to their videos. Please continue to do so. You have a fan in me.
You should check out one of his newer ones. He utilizes a looping station and basically writes a whole damn song!
I am happy to have commentary on the videos you've done by someone who has done beat boxing and is knowledgeable about that. Most commentators are focused entirely on singing, so the talent of the beat boxers is really not appreciated.
He is such a wonder of the world! ❤❤❤❤
I understand that Adam Rupp has a nice tenor voice as well.
It was interesting to hear a reaction from someone who actually knows beatboxing - which I definitely do not. Adam always impresses me - even when he isn't the focus. Part of his breath control comes from the fact that his college degree is in trumpet performance. I think one of his best performances on a Home Free song is on Listen to the Music. I saw them in concert a few months ago and his solo was breathtaking. Very different from this since he now uses a looper so he can harmonize with himself over the drum line.
He also plays several instruments, including drums (of course), trumpet, and I believe bass.
Can see Adam's sounds in some of there songs better try CANT STOP THIS FEELING or FOLSOM PRISON BLUES enjoy HOME FREE ARE FIRE
another reactor "Drumming with Jarvis", who is a professional drummer, loves Adams vocal percussions because he emulates what an actual drummer would do and can play along with it.
Thank you for the analysis, fascinating.
Adam is a beast
If you want a surprise with them the 9 to 5 live and it has to be one of the live versions. ua-cam.com/video/o60Rr0UW0Rs/v-deo.html
Kevin Olusola does the throat beatboxing in Pentatonix's original song Love Again. It's soooo good!
If you ever get the chance, you have to see them live! The videos are great but are nowhere near the live experience! Adam also has a beautiful singing voice, as well! Love your reviews! ❤
Adam Rupp,from Mankato,Mn. is 41.
Home Free often introduces Adam as either the "heart and pulse" of the band or as a "freak of nature". Don't forget that this was recorded on a cell 'phone so the sound wouldn't be as good as it was live. His versatility is truly astonishing. Whether playing 'drums' or a 'no-monica' or even castanets or a DJ, he's incomparable. Curiously for an acapella band, they all can play instruments - and Adam plays drums, trumpet and seemingly anything else he turns his hand to. Thanks for playing this & your comments.
Adam has boots on, and is on a wooden platform with space underneath, so that his footwork can shine, too. They are amazing live, especially Adam. Adam I just turned 40, I think. He has been beatboxing in 2000, to supply that for the a cappella group that he and his brother had just founded. And he has been working it ever since. He is self-taught, from a book.
Oh, and Adam is from Mankato Minnesota.😊
Tim Foust, the bass you enjoy so much, calls Adam the magic behind Home Free.
The incomparable Adam Rupp--beatboxer and vocal percussionist extraordinaire!! Home Free's secret weapon❣️🎼🥰🎶❤️
I don't know that anyone has ever actually publicized Adam's range, but I sincerely believe his is the widest vocal range of all the Home Free fellas 💕
He preforms every nite and does this 7 days a week sometimes two shows in one day.
I have had the pleasure if seeing HF 5 times, and Adam always brings down the house with his solos.
We've seen them in the movie police acedemy.
Adam is inhuman. He must be an alien disquised as an angel (because he is so handsome☺️ 😅). 😉 And then he must have swallowed a drum kit because he is incredible. Not just with the percussion sound, but with so many sounds he creates. His moves are also great. Yes for me the number 1 beatboxer.
I believe he’s influenced by Tom Thum, so that’s why his style is similar.
He was a percussionist first so he knows the drumkit hands down
Btw, I hope you can cover more competitive beatboxing again when you get the chance.
It’s great to find a reactor that is not only appreciative of talent but extremely knowledgeable enough to technically explain it to those without any musical training. Coming from a classically trained pianist/soloist….keep doing what you’re doing. We love reactors that appreciate not only raw talent but the hard work that goes into obtaining that skill level. By the way…..great voice! New subscriber here…..I enjoy listening to your voice. A small thrill for a Nana. 🤣😘
All I could keep thinking was: wait till this guy hears Helium 😂 He's a Russian beatboxer that does super crazy drum & bass
Adam sings and harmonizes with the others as well. Not often, but if you want to hear a sample...he sings in How Great Thou Art. He is also a part of the amazing harmonies in Helplessly Hoping and Brothers in Arms.
Thank you for this reaction - so good to have someone knowledgeable explaining things. Adam surprised us during the Sea Shanty Medley by doing castanets, and then doing a harmonica in Man of Constant Sorrow. He also provides all the high wails in one part of Listen to the Music. In so very many ways he is the absolute heart of Home Free.
I believe Adam is a fan of Tom. There are many similarities in their performances. At least what I saw from Tom's TedX performance.
I just started watching your channel. I'm not big on hip hop music but I like your content. I'm glad you like home free they're my favorite band right now. You should check out some more of their stuff. Go rest high on the mountain and their version of when a man loves a woman you should definitely check out. 🤟
You should really watch their cover of Listen to the Music by The Doobie Brothers, Adam has a lot of chance to shine in that one, both in beatboxing and his singing
I mentioned on your last video that Home Free is going on tour in Europe starting in September but thought I would add that every show has a built in section where Adam just does his thing for a bit and the rest of the group leaves the stage. It's an experience you will remember forever. I just wish I had recorded Adam's set but I have a couple videos on my channel that I recorded live. No need to react but you're welcome to watch and enjoy.
He taught himself how to play drums so he would be able to get the movements down with his beat box
By far the best analysis of what Adam does. Thx
Man of Constant Sorrow, demonstrates Adam’s harmonica sounds. Really cool.
I remember Roxorloops. He was a beast back in the days.
If I'm not mistaken, he actually lives in Denmark now. 🇩🇰😊
And yeah. If a comedian is laughing at another comedians show. It's usually because he f'ed someyhing up.
You should check out their cover of "Folsom Prison Blues".... especially if you know the original by Johnny Cash
Adam Rupp in 40 years old now I think.
41.....birthday is April 23, 1982.
@@cindyshawver9986 Thanks for correction. Is Rob gonna be 40 next month?
Adam Rupp is a master at beatbox.
I saw Home Free in Portland, Oregon a couple years ago. They were fantastic. Adam did this. Unbelievable!
When I was in the marching band in high school I was always impressed by the percussion section! I was proud of myself when I could just play the song while following my choreography on the field! And that was just playing a song we had practiced enough to be able to play it in our sleep or on autopilot and then adding the actual movement of the field routine. But the percussion section had way more to do than the rest of us so it was impressive
