This is the best explanation and demonstration of how to pick up the correct lead. I ride a horse that is very "left-handed" and getting the right lead is tricky. I know I haven't been cuing correctly, so I will try this technique the next time I ride. Thanks so much!
My horse will never pick up the right lead unless I use my left rein to tilt head to the outside. This bring right shoulder forward forces correct lead. It’s just harder to do around a right turn. Straight away is easiest. Trying to make it less obvious as we continue to work on it.
This video is brilliant!!! I've been struggling with canter lead right for months on my 5yr old ...tried everything imaginable, watched this video and everything made sense ! Rode him the same night and couldn't believe it worked straight away ! Did lots of trot to canter transitions using this method and was laughing with joy ! People at the yard now think I'm a bit mental but how brill !!! Thank you
After watching this video, I practised getting the correct lead today and bingo I got the right lead every time ... counter flexion tip especially useful. Very well explained !!
Keep the videos coming! Most clips only show demonstrations on a horse so I found it helpful to see what happens with your legs on the ground without the distraction of a horse.
I love that you explain how the horse naturally moves & analogies. *can you expand on this & explain how to ask for a lead change, please? Trying to work on it with my daughter!
This is very helpful! I’ve been watching videos on this type of stuff all afternoon and this makes so much sense. I have a young horse that is unbalanced and is very messy and fast into his canter. Going to try this next time I ride😁
I love you guys. My horse often is incorrect going counter clockwise. Which is too funny because all last year he refused to bend properly going clockwise. This year is total opposite.
Whoever picks the music for your episodes has great taste! I think I heard Jason Aldean last week and Kip Moore this week? Good music AND fantastic training tips? I'll go for that!
Hi! sorry your asking envention, but my 14.2hh cob always gives bucks when I tap him with the crop for a canter.. if you think about it when a horse bucks you, you are thrown forward, but when you use the crop be already in a leaning forward position (like your 2 point position) so you don't get thrown, so basically the horse will just be bucking air and not you! :) (I can always feel when he's about to buck, and every time I feel it I go into that position) :D Thanks x
Omg! I love this!! You have just helped me a ton!! My horse only likes to go to the left lead canter and if I lean his shoulders to the right and the hind leg is in the position for take off into the right lead canter, his front legs go into the right lead canter and he takes an extra step with his hinds and goes into the left lead with his hinds and switches his front feet to the left lead, confusing isn't it? Haha, I hope that counter flexion trick will work!! :3
The MOST important thing when asking for a lead is to use the correct timing of the “ask” If you ask when the outside front is on the ground and moving back he will trike off on the other lead. This works for both walk and trot.
Can you make a video on teaching OTT TBs on picking up the RIGHT (not correct I mean the direction right like the direction left) just bought a 4yo OTT TB gelding and he can't canter on the RIGHT lead! He can canter on the LEFT lead but on the right he just won't canter on it, I just bought him a week ago so I haven't had any time to train him yet, so can you make a video on that? THANKS (Like this comment if you agree and want a video for this)
OMG same we just got a 4yo OTT TB mare about a month ago and she could canter on the right but she’s so much better on the left, on her right she just gets confused.
i love your videos!!! can you pretty please to a video on flying lead changes and/or a video of leg yields after a jump. It would help mme out so much !!! Thanks!!!
Absolutely nothing wrong with starting at the walk. You'll even notice at a lot of pleasure riding events, they'll ask you to canter from the walk. I have the same problem when I'm asking for a canter at the trot; he'll just trot quickly and then soon after he'll canter. Not too sure why he said to start from the trot.
My trainer tells me that it is better to go from a walk to a canter, so your good. The reason it isn't as good to go from a trot to a canter, is because it is just harder for the horse to pick up the canter, and also, the
They will pick up the wrong lead. Unless you are doing a simple change, while the horse is already on the canter mood, it isn't good to go from a fast or some paces of trots to a canter :)
My gosh I love the intro video! I know you said to post ideas of your facebook page, but seeing as Im logged in on UA-cam, could you possibly do a info video of helping to control and correct a fast horse?
AHHH! I'm so frustrated! I have been working on this a long time. My boy ALWAYS wants to do a right lead. Even if I can get a left lead, after trying many, MANY times, he won't keep it. The saddle has been fitted, he doesn't have back pain. He'll pick up the lt lead fine on the lunge line. And, yes, I do have a trainer. But we're getting no place fast.
wiselady 425 I know this was a year ago, but it sounds like your horse is weak on the left lead and isn’t physically able to keep it. Building muscle and working on that lead will help! Plus being balanced in the saddle helps as well!
I know you posted this a while back but I can't seem to recognize the feeling of correct leads could you make a video on how to feel what lead your on?
Hi I am not them but I can help! uaslly if your in the wrong canter lead you can feel it, it feels unbalanced! also if you look down to the shoulder the inside leg will be leading
+Olivia Stone also, the horse's canter will naturally *slightly* swing your hips into the direction of the lead he's on. for example if he's on the left lead, you'll feel your hips being slightly swayed to the left.
My horse struggles with flying lead change should I try counter flexion when asking to change leads and see if that helps my horse better understand. Of course first ill ask for canter and go across the diagonal ask for trot then ask for the other lead first, so I'm not rushing her into it. Her old owner told us she's never been able to do a flying lead change so I wonder if having her counter flex instead of bending her to the inside will help.
Could you please make a video on how to stop your horse drifting away from the wall in the school? When I come back to trot from canter on my right rein my horse turns its head to the left but trots towards the centre of the school(to the right). I'm finding it very difficult to push her back over with my leg. Thanks, Amy :)
So are you saying when asking for the right lead canter, you get the right shoulders inward and put a little more pressure on the left rein? My horse was an x race horse and he fights the right lead all the time!
The horse my sister rides has just begun his teen years. His back has been 'twisted' for many years now, so he is weaker on the left rein. This has resulted to him cantering on the wrong lead when on the left rein to balance himself, is there anything she can do to try to get him on the correct lead or is he too stuck in his ways now?
I agree with ilovetonto18!!! But the horse I ride has a very slow canter off the bat and I jump 2 6 during my lessons so obviously I need a more forward canter. My trainer is always telling me to use the crop but I'm afraid to because he bucks whenever i do. Like major buck. (I usually flip flop my reigns to get him moving but it doesn't always work). Do u have any tips on how I can survive a buck without being thrown off or just sprung forward? Or any on how I can make sure he doesn't buck?

same here! except he won’t pick up his left lead

Love the simple basic lessons. I'm re-starting my rescue thoroughbred and these lessons help me very much. Thank You.
Keep the videos coming! Most clips only show demonstrations on a horse so I found it helpful to see what happens with your legs on the ground without the distraction of a horse.
Ive been schooling a horse who won't change their lead, I am so used to asking a certain way with my horse, so I really needed this thanks!
youve made my day. Is your dog really called vegemite. Good to know some Aussies embrace their stereotypes
Basically everyone in Australia eats Vegemite so it's actually true...
I'mJustASadTwigOfLemonMyrtle do you live in Australia or just picking up the stereotype?
Love the visualization!
These are so useful for teaching younger riders.
Sally Swift did this well, so glad to see someone younger following up!
Very clear explanation on Evention tv on picking up correct canter leads. Thank you!
The opening was ridiculously dramatic and I love it.
Thanks so much, my daughter has been having problems with her canter take offs on the wrong lead this will help bunches.
I love that you explain how the horse naturally moves & analogies.

When I see these videos it gives me such hope that I can improve but at the same time I see how badly I ride in comparison, argh!
Omg Ikr! 😨😭😭
Feel free to check my riding clips to see how unstable I am though I do have passion to improve. I just lack the feel.
+Agui007 I know
Yep same here😭😔
This really helped. Now I understand what my trainer is talking about better. Thanks!
Wow! Thank you so much. This is exactly what I had troubles with. Thanks again
Whoever picks the music for your episodes has great taste! I think I heard Jason Aldean last week and Kip Moore this week? Good music AND fantastic training tips? I'll go for that!
I am just starting to canter and this really helped me understand thanku so much and by the way your horse is just beautiful
this is the best, most sensible explanation ever
Very very helpful, iv got a young colt that is stubborn about taking his right lead. l look forward to giving youre advice a go...thank you
Love the AC/DC "Back in Black" music! LOL
I watch these videos like I watch Clinton Anderson on tv ,Im glued!
Yay this is the exact same issue I've been having lately riding my green mount. Thanks for breaking it down :)
Best videos on the net! Greetings from Tehran!

thank you! currently looking for tips about how to pick up the correct lead when landing after a jump- that would be wonderful
What a handsome powny! Reminds me of my old boy, Benny 💙
Nobody But Us Equestrians Know How AWESOME this is
Thank you so much for the tips. I'm a beginner and this is a great help for me.
YOUR DOGS NAME IS VEGEMITE HOLY MOLY
Posting Diagnols video please? Love your guys videos, very helpful and educational. Thanks for posting them.
Once I saw this video I've been picking up the correct canter lead ......😀
The intro is amazing

Seriouly all my expensive lessons and trainers !!!couldn't make it this fundamental!
YOU guys are awesome thank you you explain things in a way that make it so easy to understand and vegemite is even cooler
cheers mates!
Can you please make a video about positions in cantering like how to stay in the saddle? The sitting trot video helped so much! Thank you!

This was really helpful for me
can you also make a video on independent seat and hands
I would love a video on lead changes! I have a lot of trouble with those, mainly that I always get a crossfire instead of a full change.
As always very helpful - Thank you
can u please do a video on how to keep a horse cool during the summer?
These help so much! Thank you so much
Thx Good video. Kind regards from Denmark.
your theme song is so catchy!
Love the dogs name..... Vegemite :3 ... but any ways very helpful video :)
I enjoyed it very much ! and thank you
Works perfectly! Thank you!
i love your videos!!! can you pretty please to a video on flying lead changes and/or a video of leg yields after a jump. It would help mme out so much !!!
Thanks!!!
Really good explanation .
Oh my gosh!
I love your accents! 😂😍
I love these videos! Would you do one on how to get a very lazy horse moving?
is it bad that i start at the walk when i am asking for the canter? Because when i am in the trot and i ask she just go's into a very fast trot.

When asking for the canter from the trot, sit the trot then do the transition. I hope that helps!

i was learned to pull the outside rein a bit and do sitting trot then squeez for canter
you are such an inspiration!
Thank you it was very helpful
From a western perspective, canter leads are led from the hip. Left hip in left lead. Right hip in right lead
This really helped me. I wasnlaughin at the good day bit 😆
Please please do a video on lead changes, it would be ever so helpful (:
This was really helpful!
Best explanation! Thank you wish me luck
My horse must just hate to change leads.... but this is sooooooooo helpful!!!!
Your location shows PA, top of homepage shows Texas, but you're sounding like youre from Australia..nice mix!
Can you do a video on how to keep your legs forward while jumping
Could u do an episode on how to get the horse nice and round on the bit please??
The basic point to remember is that if you ask at precisely the moment the outside front foot is moving back he will always take the other lead.
this makes sense!! explained so well, thankyou!!

in saddle-seat riding, canter is always asked from the walk.
could you maybe do a video on how to make a horse more forward going when jumping?
Great video, thank you. When do you do the half halt?
can you please do a "getting a good jumping position/two-point" video??!!
This is really helpful! thanks! :)
really good video !! helps me a lot :) thanks !!
great video!!

Oh my freaking god your dog is named Vegemite that is sooooooo cute I'm Aussie and I love that idea for a pets name :3
