  • Today Mowgley was super spooky! Check out this video to find out how Alicia was able to navigate her ride through this, basing all her fixes around the training scale. The training scale to gain back connection, not only fixes the spooking, but keeps it repeatable for the following rides!
    She also shows us how to start the canter. How to get a horse who doesn't canter. This is a super exciting episode and shows you how we were able to have a great ride by the end of the session, without reacting to what the horse trows at you!

      @@chandorequestrian - Alicia is awesome, careful & so thoughtful with her horse & also in her explanations to riders. I have not witnessed many, if any riders, trainers or instructors explain a theory even close to the way Alicia does. 1 other person who prof. "breezed" racehorses & now buys OTTBs to re-train, is Shelby Dennis. She is young & not as personally polished as Alicia, but she very def. understands OTTB thoroughly. She has some very good points as well. Alicia, Shelby, Warwick Schiller and a few others are all horse-centric, modern trainers. Old School trainers (fear based, abusive speed trainers) are dinosaurs 🦕 & need to retire or be shunned. Good luck with your horse ♥️🐴♥️

    Alicia I'm going to ask a really stupid question lol
    When your going around the arena and you know they might spook at something like the mounting block. You said do a leg yield ! Do you leg yield in the direction of the spooky thing or away ? Some say towards they need to see it, others say away 🙃. Oh and are you keeping your reins in the straight train tracks ?
    Maybe the better question is if they want to bolt to the right do we disengage the right hide quarter or the left hide quarter 🤔

    • @YourRidingSuccess
      @YourRidingSuccess  3 роки тому +13

      Super question!!!! Think about when the horse wants to spook, really what is happening is that their body is wanting to move out of the shape and line we want as a rider, so try to focus on where the horses shoulders are going, rather than the spook. Imagine you are riding down the wall on the right rein, if the horse all of a sudden moves to the right you have lost control of the horses right shoulder (or train track) so you need to push the right shoulder back to the left by using a leg yield to the left (so right flexion). If you try to look at each situation as "where is my horse" rather than the spook, you can always solve it! Does this help?

    • @lisafraser7446
      @lisafraser7446 3 роки тому +3

      @@YourRidingSuccess fantastic 😊 yes that definitely helps me have an image in my head. When your on your horse and your trying to think where's the spooky thing which side am I moving OMG I'm having a brain fart lol your horse has already bolted and your still seated where it all started 🤭.
      Your way, you can react quickly just keep thinking keep shoulders in the train track 👍
      Thank you so much for taking time out of your day to answer my question ❣️

    • @YourRidingSuccess
      @YourRidingSuccess  3 роки тому +2

      A good thing to think about also is don't worry if it takes time to become quicker - this is normal! Just make the correction as soon as you realise you need to do something, even if you are a little slow, just the habit of stopping and doing something makes you a little quicker and over time you become quicker and quicker!!

    I really enjoyed this video and how Alicia works through anything Mowgley throws her way. I'm working with a 10 year old OTTB and he consistently raises his head at walk to trot transitions, then he will lower his head in the trot and settle in until I ask for canter transition, then same thing. He is always head high and collected at the canter. Alicia mentioned Mowgley raises his head to get his balance. I have been concerned about this issue but wonder ...will my horse eventually find his balance and stop the head raising? I don't want to use a martingale, surcingle or side reins to correct him. Many thanks for all the invaluable guidance.

    • @YourRidingSuccess
      @YourRidingSuccess  3 роки тому

      Hi Darcy, this is very common and try to think about "rhythm + suppleness = connection!! So when you lose the connection you have lost suppleness. Try to change the place you make your transitions so you can include some suppleness, this could mean turning a circle and using some leg yield then making the transition as you go back to the wall and up the long side. Every time your horse has his head up try to think of it as needing to make enough suppleness that the horse can connect. Let me know how you go!

    I hear you talk about submission, acceptance, & it's evident it is difficult at this stage. I can see your obvious love, but as a serious question, do you ever struggle with the notion of it being too much for them??
    Do you believe they have to submit in order to progress like this?
    I'm such a softey!!
    I know you said this 22 mins in not hard work, & of course it depends on your goals!
    But how do you know when you're asking too much??

      Hi Benita! Submission is a part of dressage and at the end of the day we are riding and training the horse. But submission doesn't have to be a negative thought, it can be more about the cooperation of the horse. So if you think about it like that its more about the cooperation of the horse not that the horse is an unwilling participate that does what it's told.
      Horses have different personalities which means that they have different levels of cooperation. Its our job as riders to help the horse enjoy the work and make the work good for the horse.
      Knowing when it is too much for the horse does take practice in your training but often the horse will let you becasue they will get tired and they will show you that it is difficult, especially if training something new. So if you pay good attention during training you can tune in on the signs that they are finding the work difficult and might need a walk break.

    Can someone let me know if I'm understanding this lesson correctly? I think what's happening is that he's not picking up the correct lead because he's not bending and soft to the inside? Instead he's sort of stiff and falling in instead? So then we use the leg yield to get him to be supple enough to bend and pick up the correct lead?

    • @YourRidingSuccess

    this was a fantastic video, probably my favorite video in the series. my horse has struggled with a good canter, picking up the right lead, rushing, hollowing, ever since I restarted him 3 years ago. being able to watch you work through this problem on the horse as he struggled was so much more helpful than all the videos out there of someone riding a horse with no issues while simply explaining how to fix the problem. thank you so much for sharing this process with us! im 100% a visual learner, and seeing mowgli having the same avoidance behavior as my gelding Chauncey has finally gotten the lightbulb to click regarding my reaction and how to keep his mind engaged followed by his body. love love love you guys! ❤🦄😃

    Thank you so much! Do you have any tips on how to encourage horses to canter on a certain lead, as in stop them from switching leads themselves? Because whenever I try to ask a horse to canter on the lead they don't like, they usually sass me and switch the lead anyway 😂

    • @YourRidingSuccess
      @YourRidingSuccess  3 роки тому

      Hi there, if you watch how Alicia solves the issues Mowgley has raking the right canter lead the same rules apply for a horse that is switching the lead, the horse is switching the lead because it finds it easier to balance that way.

    Ah man this reminds me so much of this persons horse. I only rode him a handful of times but he was the most unsupple log of a horse I'd ever ridden.
    Only he wouldn't so much be against you, as he'd back through the contact and run backwards to avoid it. I know his owner was petrified of this so never corrected it. I found out since I wouldn't let him run back that it resulted in a very dramatic temper tantrum.
    I've ridden quite a few horses that could benefit from schooling like this, but it was always hard since I'd have to ride with 8 or 9 other people which is obviously distracting.
    On a completely different note, I need to send this to people that say riding isn't a sport. You sound EXHAUSTED halfway through, it's definitely a tough job and a lot more work than a lot of people realise.

    I know this is an older video, that I am seeing now, thank you. Watching you riding like this makes me realise all the times I've stopped mid training session, thinking I am just not winning here, I have always tried to be perfect and have not allowed myself to just let it happen, and to realise the horse is also getting frustrated trying to understand what I expect of him. You Rock !! Loving your videos.

    Great video. Once again I learned so much. This is exactly where my horse and I are at in our training currently so it was very helpful for us. My biggest mind blowing moment was to learn that when my horse raises his head when I ask for canter it is NOT because he is being naughty and evading my aids but because he is confused and trying to find his balance. I have misinterpreted that behavior. I also learned that we should practice one lead per day. I usually go both directions and I always pick his good side first which I think is not leaving him enough energy for what he finds most difficult. Going to start with this new canter transition method today! Thank you for the amazing information as usual 😊
    Edited to add: rode today after watching this video and is implemented these techniques and we got the left lead after the third try BUT between each ask he was more relaxed, balanced, straight and supple and not leaning, his head went up a few times but it came right back down after a few moments. Asking him to increase the trot and then bringing it back down several times really helped because normally he tries to do that anyway and it’s almost like since I made it my idea he didn’t want to do it anymore and just picked up the canter from a nice trot instead 😂 I don’t know if that is actually what is going on but I could tell he was like “mom, I dont actually want to trot that fast, I’ll just canter nicely now please” lol

    Incredible capacity of submitting your horse, from trot to canter. Your patience, only less than half hour, absolutely dedicated, to the canter, even if it didn't go, the right leg, was great.
    Each teacher, in my country, has different methods, for the canter. Certainly, it also, depends on the horse.
    The technics, to develop the canter, are not always the same.
    You have proven, then even the horse was going, " against his own interests", you lead him, to " your own goals", that means: lead the way, to the canter!
    Great class! Hope my teachers and future teachers, watch them, too.
    Hope going back to riding, soon, I had a huge sprain, around 9 months ago, not riding ( that's the worst), just running and walking. A mistaken treatment, because of the danger of the pandemic. Lots of ice, lots of rest, compression and elevation ( RISE method) and a huge internal bruise. Hopefully, keeping necessary rest, for recovery. Hope to return riding, before, the year ends.I had lost federal year participation, but health is first, for any sport.
    Great class! Hope you teach us, flying changes, on a next class. Thank you, Alicia.You are a master and have a great energy and charisma. See you!

    Hi, this may be a silly question but if they've been racing at a gallop why are they unbalanced in canter? Loved this video, and all your videos. My girl is just the same age/stage as Mowgily so they're super helpful 💖👍😊

    • @YourRidingSuccess
      @YourRidingSuccess  3 роки тому +11

      Great question Cheryl! The reason is because when they are racing they are going in big open spaces, not in smaller arenas like an arena, they are also really pulling along on the shoulder when they gallop, not balanced and upright like dressage and also they can have their head in any position when racing, where as in dressage we are asking the horse to be in a specific position always. Hope this helps x

    Thank you so much for your wonderful videos. I am taking away so much good information. I have a 13 year old Freisian/American Saddlebred cross mare that I got as a 3 year old when I was 64 and we have worked hard and just this year gotten our Bronze medal here in the United States. Our next goal is 4th level and after doing 3rd level I do not feel that we are consistently through or supple enough to move on so I have backed up to the basics. Your videos are helping me see that I am right in doing that and helping me to work on making it all better. Thank you.

    Well done riding the M! Just a few thoughts on horse sweat stress. In OTT or general rehab we spend time on body release a lot. Massage and Emmett or Tellington Touch therapy has proven excellent in settling the body and corresponding stress patterns. Please try this twice weekly. The rewiring of a OTT to riding horse takes a good 12-24 months. I like your flow but would create a walk session in hand, opening ribs in shoulder fore, then under saddle with 5min movement walk or trot in shapes, over poles and give him time out for 1-2"min. A great dressage trainer in Melbourne in the 1980s showed me the 10min lesson for new learning. Repeat a movement 3 xs then release and reward after each try and after the 3 x return the horse to the paddock. After daily or every second day of these brief sessions you may find after a week the horses' learning is clear relaxed and open to new learning. If you try this with the body work M may learn with easier mind body balance.
    Understand the M may need to flow but a loose lunge pre ride moving from a faster trot to a slower trot also increases balance and top line strength.
    Stay well.🌹 Alicia you a wonderful rider x

    Yay!! You can see him trying so hard. I have a question. You say that you need to give the aid when the outside hind is coming forward but as you can’t see the outside hind, can you describe when to give the aid in reference to where the forelegs are? Thanks xx

    • @YourRidingSuccess
      @YourRidingSuccess  3 роки тому +3

      Hi Anita! Super question! An easier way to think about it is in relation to your sitting and rising phases of the rising trot. So when the outside hind is on the ground is when you are in the "sitting" phase of your trot. 💕
