    So I set this up. She galloped at it, stopped when she realized there was a pole, leapt from a standstill over the pole and the jump, and proceeds to trip over the last pole. We’re making progress.

      +blackjack21 My horse has a serious anticipation problem, if he loses his mind a little bit after i've cantered him I just trot him around and work on circles/figure eights/etc and also ask him for a soft feel (drop his head) to keep his attention on me. Not until he settles and responds to my seat do I let him walk.

      Extending The Trot That certainly works with Penny, but it's after almost every jump or canter. She's only five, so it doesn't really surprise me that she's this hot, but it gets exhausting to spend ten minutes calming her down after 30 seconds of jumping. Usually I wouldn't complain about exhaustion, but exhaustion leads to frustration which leads to Penny acting up even more. She's... A lot of work, for just one little Mustang. =/

      I know exactly how you feel!! My horse goes into this crazy forward trot after I bring him down from a canter no matter what. It's so uncomfortable and time consuming to deal with this every time! I haven't even attempted a jump with him in forever! Lol

    What should I do with a horse that jumps over trot poles? We tried the takeoff and landing poles and it turned into a bounce line.

    • @Just2equestriangirls
      @Just2equestriangirls 8 років тому +4

      Just keep walking your horse over it until they don't jump it... Then go to the trot and keep doing it until he/she doesn't jump it anymore... Then keep repeating

      Do trot poles before you set up a jump, but yeah walk over them at first then get into trot

    • @charleshills1408
      @charleshills1408 7 років тому +1

      Probably needs a standing martingale, but if you don’t wanna use one, keep light pressure with both hands and legs

    • @equityleave4803
      @equityleave4803 6 років тому

      Rachel Hedderman here are some other ways to stop rushing fences.hope they work
      * the horse is speeding up anticipating the jump. Trot up to a tiny cross rail, and a stride or 2 before pull them sideways out of the jump. It’s not refusing the jump because refusals are different, this time your telling the horse to do it and it’s your plan.
      *trot up the jump(and make sure they are tiny ones)and pull them to a halt in front of the jump( once again trying to stop the anticipation. The horse will now know that there’s other ways to head to jump and will be prepared for others , kinda like opening a door of different types of thinking into the horse, this could conclude to having sloppy, and unprepared jumps, and may not be a long term solution. ) do this a couple more times ,after the horse has opened into other types of thinking he will head to the jump anticipating the stop or turn, not the jump. Then you will head to it again and jump over it. Mix it up sometimes just so that he won’t be anticipating one or the other so much.

      I'm not an expert in any way but what helps me with my pony is trying to really loosen myself up and sit really deep in my seat while circling and half halting when needed to slow him down. Again I'm not an expert in any way and idk what you've been doing but it helps me to do this ^_^

    • @SMV1199

      yeah np! In my experience, the more you pull the faster they go so you really want to move away from using that as your main way of slowing them ^-^

    • @erinjones4808
      @erinjones4808 8 років тому +1

      once again i am not an expert in a way but what helps my horse is when you have lunged him walk trot canter make him
      go backwards even when you are in the saddle example if u are in the middle of a jumping course make him go backwards
      but when he is doing what u ask him to do give him some *rain?? sry i don't know how to spell rain so if you don't give him some
      rain he will just stronger and he will get a bad
      mouth even if is is for 2 seconds give him **rain** if not do small circles and try it again so interrupt him in every thing that
      ur doing often if not idk *_* hope it works THING BACKWARDS don't worry it will take time

    Remember that when circling, you have 4 points to work. Your inside hand, outside hand, inside leg, and outside leg.
    The inside leg : Creates the bend
    Outside hand: Keeps the pace
    Inside leg: Pushes the horse out, so he's bending through the ribs
    Outside leg: Stops the hindquarters swinging out.
    Also, make sure you are looking round the circle, you shoulders turned lightly to the inside, and you hips straight. Ideally you will be able to see the horses inside eye round the bend.
    Also remember that a circle has no straight sides, it's all curved.
    My last tip is to place poles around a circle, so you have a rough guide, and the poles will help keep the horses pace! Hope I helped xxx

      It is often helpful to do a check and give. That is were you slowly apply pressure to the bit and then give. Also putting 2 or 3 ground poles after the jump will help the horse collect and hopefully slow down also after the jumps halt in a straight line. If the horse doesn't stop act like you are just gonna let the horse run into the rail (he/she will stop) hope this helps happy jumping ;)

      @staceykearns315 7 років тому +3

      thank you I have tried the stoping after and it was working but the other night someone got involved in my training And he hit the jump with his knees and now he rushes again I'm back to square 1 and he has lost his confidence... I'm not happy about that person getting involved because I never asked them for there help and they where really putting me down and making me feel like shit I hope your idea works I will try it today again thanks xx

    • @isabelrichards9117
      @isabelrichards9117 7 років тому +1

      +Stacey Kearns I hope this really helps! You can also work on in like a 5/6 stride combination stop right after the first one make him stand and back up (to make sure he has enough room to go on) and do a slow collected trot over the second one and stop again. I have worked with a little mare named Lucy that has the same problem. All horses are different I guess but this really worked for me! I really hope this helps!! Even doing simple exercises like trots poles or having the jumps just ground poles. I have been through this and it is very frustrating so i feel ya. Again happy jumping! Keep confident and you will get it!

    I've been riding a local yards mare for a month now within the first few weeks riding I realised how much she rushes head first into jumps, I saw this video, and decided to try it with her, after a few times doing this exercise I found my by using my voice more with this helped a lot, she now waits in walk until I ask for trot into the jump and waits in trot u til I ask for canter into the jump, this exercise has helped so much in furthering mine and her riding! Thank you evention!

    When I first had my horse he rushed at the jumps(I got banned from jumping at some places)and I tried everything all of these exercises and have to say none of them worked, what I did was had poles set out all over,had the odd jump around and kept CHANGING the exercise and that helped him as he didn't know what he was doing next so he had to listen,jumping on a circle helped him as he had to think about balancing himself around the cirle rather then rushing at the jumps

    ^ I have my horse on a running martingale, cos often when i do a soft half halt, he chucks his head in the air (only when jumping) and it eventually stopped it. The first time i rode in it, he fought with it a lot, but he got used to it quickly and so doesn't chuck his head up anymore :)

    Hi,
    Could someone please help me!!? My mare is soooo bad for rushing that she will catapult herself at the jump and trip over it.... She underestimates the small ones and will slide to a stop and leap the bigger ones... She's a 16.1 hh Thoroughbred and is only 6... She is fresh and we are the first home of hers that she has jumped.... If i do a grid or even just two jumps she will just rush. I'm starting to use this tactic and it seems to be working or though she still rushes a bit. She gets extremely excitable in our jump paddock too. She has jumped up to 1.20 cm. I'm her first child rider and so she thinks she can get away with things, I'm quite a good experienced rider and so I can handle her when she heats up or though I want to start competitively jumping and showing so I would appreciate help.
    Please and Thank You

    What if the horse rushes the poles as well, doesn't look where it's going and as a result ends up running through the jump instead of going over it?
    I have a chestnut TB mare, very sensitive mouth, always ridden in a snaffle as will flip over on top of you even with a wilkie or a hanging cheek. I've tried exercises similar to this but she rushes poles too, even when there's no jump involved. In my opinion, i think she now just associates poles with going fast with her nose in the air. I've tried a standing martingale but she flips over in that. I also tried a market harbrough but she's worse in that cos she tries to fight it.
    An exercise I use quite often is cantering towards the jump then asking her to stop in front of it, doing this a few times until she assumes we're stopping in front of it. I then ask her to keep going and she jumps it nicely. The only problem with this is that I have to do this with every single different jump I do and I obviously can't do this when we're out competing. She never does any of this behaviour with XC fences as she knows they won't move so she does back off jumping those but I can't just do XC on its own and she's very talented at dressage. I bought her an an eventing prospect because she does have scope and she does have talent on the flat but I'm stuck with her showjumping.

    My horse Callie has started refusing more often than she usually does and it’s frustrating because I don’t know how to fix this. I think it’s partly my fault because the more she refuses, the more nervous I get and I get more unsure whether she’ll take the next jump so I think she senses that and it makes her want to take the jump even less. She also rushes every jump, no matter if it’s a 2’ xpole or a 3’ oxer and I can’t slow her down, not even by sitting back hard or no matter how hard I pull on the reins or no matter how many half halts I do. It’s gotten to the point where I’m scared of bringing her to shows because I think she’s going to rush the jumps and refuse others and I’m going to get send out of the arena or I’ll fall. What could help me fix this?

    I know a horse like that, try circling in front of the jump at trot or walk even canter until it is ok with it :)

    Longer stirrup is on the mounting side. Probably the leather has stretched is all.
    Wouldn't even notice until it's pointed out to you because it happens gradually

    Deal with it. I have a retired racehorse and she gallops everything. She is also 30-40 inches taller than me. I could easily show that horse not to rush within 5 minutes

    my horse throws her head and it feels like she locks her jaw so I don't have control and then she ignores my half halts to the jumps and just bolts to the jump I can't turn cause that's when she locks her jaw or it feels like it it feels like I'm riding a jumping race horse it's scary

    Hello im hoping I could get some advice, ive just brought a ex racer he is 15 and 16hh he has been trained but all he does is as soon and we trot his head goes right up and trots sideways but he does settle but if im going overoles he has to have head up cantering on the spot yet its just a pole on the ground, also when he canters his head goes up and even though I have a running martingale it seems to have no difference. Xx

    Can u guys make a video on how to teach your horse how to do flying changes? I've been taught how to ask but never how to train them into horses. My old horse was a welsh pony and I was teaching them to him so I asked one of my friends at my barn and she told me to set up poles, ask for the flying over the jump exactly how you would while just doing them in the flat. I did and it worked on him but now I have an OTTB and I've tried that but it just hasn't worked so far. So if you could make a video on how to train them into horses, it would really help me to win more classes in shows and make my life quite a bit easier!

    so you don't yank really hard on their mouths and use your whip when the horse rushes after the jump, that's what i was watching the other night and instructor was there not stopping the rider so obviously endorsing the method.

  • @charlystarly24
    @charlystarly24 11 років тому

    and so we then ask the horse to do the same thing 3 strides after the jump, canter 2 strides and then get them to halt in between the poles on the other side. As soon as the horse settles we then ask for a walk for a couple of strides before trotting around to jump the fence again. You want to teach the horse to wait. Many horses do this because they're nervous about jumping so they try to get it over and done with as soon as possible. Rushing fences DOES NOT mean that the horse loves jumping!

  • @charlystarly24

    I've ridden some horses which get very speedy before and after the jumps, they will gallop into and away from a small cross pole if you let them get away with it. We put two poles parellel together on the floor about 3 strides out from the jump like a run way, and we do the same after. What we do is we trot towards the cross pole, stop sqaure between the two poles and then walk 1 stride and ask for trot, the horse pops the jump and will try to bolt away from the fence. We know this will happen

  • @lallen7019
    @lallen7019 7 років тому

    Poles on the ground don't work for the horse I ride, we were doing some rised trotting poles and he decided to bolt and ran straight through the poles as if they weren't there, same thing happens if I put a pole in front of a jump he'll just run at it as if the pole isn't there and if he steps on it, it hardly effects him

No matter whether I walk, trot or canter into the jump, circle before it, if it's only 1 foot or 3 foot, he always gallops/charges the last few strides. I've tried all your exercises but he still rushed the last 3 strides. Any other advice or tips I could try?

    They help heaps! My horse rushes in to the fences and as she gets 2 strides out chucks her head up in the hair and used to smack me in the face which lead to a lot of nosebleeds annoyingly. But after I put a running martingale on her she doesnt even put her head in the air coming into a jump!

    I’m really late sorry but nooo the riders stirrups were uneven and this is painful for the spine because your pushing one side of your weight into one side of the horse so they go fast because it hurts or twists there spine and your saying to the horse go but not too fast but either way your going to be in pain 😳😳🐴🐴

    Guys, who don't you monetize these or give credit to the band/artists who's music you've used? You should be earning income on your efforts from google. ;) Keep it up, but earn at the same time. Passive income is always the way to go, pays for horse shows!

    Then she should really wait and stick to very small crossrails, or groundpoles until she can afford lessons. Teaching yourself to jump, while you're nervous at doing it, will not end very nicely.
