  • Cantering A Horse - Understanding how the horse moves when he canters will help you as a rider understand what you feel in your own body. When you can correlate what you feel with what you need to do with your own body, your canter seat will improve out of sight!
    You need to know when to give your canter aids for a correct canter transition, and in this video, I explain when and why. It doesn't matter if you want to do trot to canter transitions or walk to canter transitions the timing of your aids matters. Learning the basics of the horse's gaits is part of your basic dressage training. I hope these cantering tips are helpful.

    That is super visually helpful! Now, I just have to spend more time in the saddle, feeling the difference in the movements of the horse’s legs! It takes a long time to learn. ❤ I didn’t grow up riding, so it’s tough trying to put it all together as an adult, if that makes sense. It’s only been a few months for me. Slowly making minimal progress though with an instructor.

    Josie, this is one lesson I come back to and reexamine. I watch a lot of YT horse instruction, your vids are concise, on point and I always learn visually and with your intelligent, direct instruction without any extraneous chitchat. I'd like to hear you explicate in "layers" of attention in achieving the skill; for example what to integrate on my first attempts, where to attend and integrate as I improve, then how to fine tune and truly ride on, because my mind is paying attention on all those levels all at once while my body is trying to locate the muscles and achieve the skill. This vid is so useful. (Gotta love that slow-mo music humor).

    Hi josie it’s Emma. Like u I am a visual learner, what I’m loving about the your videos is the fact of how u describe things, u actually show us the mechanics of it and what a light bulb moment tonight, I can easily get my horse in canter and I’m at the stage now where I’m learning whey I ask for canter and the way u described the horses feet and what we do with out bodies with each foot of the canter. Amazing my favourite video yet❤️

      Hi josie, I’m hoping u can maybe do a video as the way u explain the “MACHANICS “ is so helpful. I never have a problem going into canter and have been told my canter seat is great, I have problems coming out of the canter into trot. It’s not bcos I’m slowing the tempo down cos I don’t, please cud u do a video sim to how u explained the canter one. My trainer is wanting me to come out of canter into rising tro but when I do it’s like I hit a brick wall it’s not fluid. Also wud LOVE one on sitting trot, I’m working on this at the moment and my trains telling me to kind of flick my pelvis from the bk to the front. I’d love a video in either of these as I love how u explain it as I’m also a visual learner. Loving your videos ❤️

    Thanks, Josie, watched this three times consecutively as I wanted to imprint it in my memory! It was really helpful in explaining it to see where you were in the saddle and where Spider’s feet were. It was also so logical but I’d never been told it before that we should ask for the downward transition when the horse has the best balance. One thing I would have found good to know is, when you are walking, what is the feeling that tells you the outside hind leg is about to land on the ground? At the barn I ride at we are encouraged only to ask for canter at walk so I’d love to get a sense of what I should be observing about my seat to help time the ask. Really appreciate how you break down all your learning to make it accessible to those of us who are starting out.

      @@BasicHorseTraining Thanks again, Josie. I watched both of these ones before my lessons this weekend. They definitely helped me with focusing on what I should be sensing but it’s also clear that it’ll take me a bit of time to get it! I think the key for me is the point you’ve made a few times about being soft/open through your hips so you can feel the horse’s movement. That’ll be my focus for improvement the next few weeks or so. Thanks again for your insights and advice.

      I would work a horse like that on the lunge until she was more balanced. No extra weight from a rider then. Don’t worry about her changing lead or even if it’s only behind as it’s usually a green balance issue. If it doesn’t improve you may need to get a vet to check her out. 😊

    Awesome video!!! And very VERY great idea with the coloured bandages 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
    But if I may ask a question…I think you said in the video that when posting to the trot, you should be OUT of the saddle when the outside hind (and therefore also the inside foreleg) is grounded, and IN the saddle when the inside hind (and therefore the outside foreleg) is grounded. I could have sworn black and blue my riding instructor (and several pony books) told me it was the other way around? Are there differing schools of thought on this, or have I somehow heard it/remembered it wrong and been driving my horse nuts every time we trot circles? 🙄🤦🏼‍♀️🤣

Does this sound like a logical way to address this?

    • @BasicHorseTraining
      @BasicHorseTraining  2 роки тому +1

      That would have you giving the aid when the outside hind leg is on the ground so the correct timing. Check to see if she picks up the left lead on the lunge. If not she is more than likely quite crooked and needs some straightening before she can pick up left lead with ease. I hope that helps you a little RedMare 17

    When I’m on the horse how can I tell the outside hind is on the ground at walk? Do you have a video about this?

      Emma my FB group doesn’t have any members as I don’t have it active at the moment. I have it sitting there for when I start it up. It did have 3 people that joined when I created it and before I could set it up lol but your name is not one of them so I’m not sure who’s group you are thinking of. I hope you find it. 😊
