FASTEST way to get the CORRECT LEAD on a difficult horse

- Getting the correct lead on your horse can be a struggle for many people. If your horse struggles with being naturally leaded, it can make it just that much more difficult. In this video, we show you a few quick exersises to help your horse start mentally connecting the dots so you can pick up the correct lead every time. This will work on either the left or right lead.
When I was a girl we bought a 12-year-old gelding for my dad. He wouldn't take the left lead either. I'm not sure if his previous owner knew there were 2 leads. He wasn't being stubborn, he was just "right-handed" and by the time we got him it was ingrained. We moved his hindquarters to the left and used corners and could get a left lead, and worked up the time on the left so that his muscles would get stronger and he'd be more comfortable on that side. That was a long time ago..... miss you, Snaps.

Trot on a right circle, then when you’re ready for the left lead canter turn around and move on a left circle with the nose pointing to the right - timing is everything so time it to where when you start your left circle you ask for your canter. Use the right circles in the beginning to get your horse forward enough if they’re not - you’ll get your lead.

So nice to see how to teach a lead to a horse without too much anxiety. Could you explain in more detail the timing please? You mentioned that it is best to ask for the left lead when the right front is in the air, more explanation as to why this works would be fantastic! Thanks.
I bought an older grade gelding that I don't believe has ever been asked to pick up that left lead. I have successfully done it a couple of times but it was a struggle. I'm going to try this excercise. Can't wait. 😊
He’s a good sport. My mare gets mad and then a whole new issue presents itself. We are retired from showing now so we don’t do anything of much athleticism anymore. If she gets the lead it’s a bonus but if not I just don’t care. You are a very skilled equestrian. Thank you for this demonstration.

Omg I watched this video 2 times and I took what I learned from it and applied to my riding since my horse doesn’t pick up the right lead and it took him 1 lap around our indoor arena which isn’t that long and he got the right lead! 💖 gosh your videos are awesome!

Stupid question that I should know but I dont know where to put my feet to ask for the lead. Where do you position inside and outside foot when asking? This is the most difficult thing for me to teach. Thank you. BTW I loved the video and how you taught it. It's just the foot position that I don't understand.
This isn't a stupid question at all! On this horse I'm asking in a little more exaggerated way to help him out. For the left lead, I place my outside (right) leg slightly back toward his hip, near where a back cinch would lie if I were using one. And my inside leg (left), stays up near the shoulder to really block it from falling in even more than I would on the average horse. I lay the outside leg on the horse and kiss to ask for the lope departure while simultaneously bumping with the inside leg to cue him to go.
On a more finished horse, these cues would be similar, but less exaggerated.

Thanks a lot, I'll definitely try that! I love your "not a big deal" reaction to failures. My sensitive arab is getting tense when I get frustrated, even if I don't show it. So maybe half of the job is my own mental control to stay calm and easy. I always shower him with praise because a) he's like a labrador on hooves and will relaxe and work willingly and b) it makes me more relaxed too and in the end we both have a good time, even if the riding isn't perfect.

I have this trouble with a head horse not wanting to pick up her right lead. Sometimes I can get her to pick it up but then she crossfires. How do I fix the crossfire?
I would definitely have a chiropractor see her. It's not normal for a horse to pick up a crossfire.
My Horse had the same problem, he was out in his C7 and back, right SI! He couldn't pick up that back right leg and get it underneath him to push off to go into his lead. If a horse is that resistant, and it feels impossible to get into one lead, Get chiropractic work done. just my opinion I even had one that chiropractor told me it was EPM. She didn't even adjust him properly.

Do you have any drills for softening up the ribcage before doing this? I have a horse who can’t pick his right lead up who is quite possibly the deadest sided thing I’ve ever ridden and has zero flexibility in his ribcage. I’ve got hip control and shoulder control on him now, but I’ve got to dig my spur between his ribs to get even the smallest reaction from him. And if he does move his ribcage any, it’s like trying to move a 4x4 with your pinkie finger. I’ve used all the drills I know with very little success. Any ideas?
Would you do the same with a green horse? I have a 2yr old who’s green and she’ll pick up her left leads fine. Every time it’s perfect and spot on, but she will NOT pick up her right. I’ve tried tight circles, pressure and release, and I’ve had people tell me to trot her into a fence then turn her and ask for a lope. And I’ve had success with that. But is it proper and correct to use that method? Am I asking too much too early? Should I just wait and see if she eventually will pick it up easier? O
Yes, you can definitely do that at this point, because right now it's not about making it physically perfect, but about teaching her mentally that she's capable of picking up the right lead. Once she's confident in her ability to do so, you can go back and work on the mechanics of it.
I would always recommend having your horse seen by a good chiropractor if this issue is persisting though. It's better to be safe and make sure she doesn't have any issue than to try to force her to work through her pain.
However, there are a huge amount of young horses that favor one lead over another and it can take a little bit of time to get them comfortable and confident on their weaker lead.

I don't believe the horse is a victim of a bad owner that is cruel but maybe an owner that doesn't fully know how to teach a specific thing like so many of us but they want to learn. Sometimes when people are critical of those of us that don't know everything it makes it difficult for us to ask without being shamed causing us to stay ignorant because we're afraid to ask. Please consider being patient and less condemning. Thanks for your understanding. And no, I'm not the owner and found this video because I don't know how to teach proper leads and have no one to ask.😊
