Ryan, I am not a Horse owner ... I am a retired business man who enjoys seeing how good training methods can overcome the most difficult problems in animals ... including the human being. I have watched other trainers deal with similar problem horses and it's obvious to me your methods are most effective. At some point, you might consider doing a video telling your "Story". How you came to your profession and what influenced your techniques. Jack from Louisville, KY.
Your videos are very helpful to myself and my daughter. Our 4H group recommended you and I’m so thankful. We are looking for a video on how to teach a side pass.
THANK YOU!! Great exercise, can't wait to try it with my mare. We have been really struggling with our leads. Ive done the normal tip the head and hip but she still gets it wrong half the time, this will help!
The problem a lot of people struggle with now is getting a "forward" horse to calm down and walk on a slack rein. I use the Clinton Anderson "one rein stop" and while it is not foolproof, sometimes it works. Be nice to see what Ryan does. I might add that I don't use a bit, I use what is called an Easy Stop. I got mine at a flea market for 5 bucks, but if you buy one from Larry Trocha they are a bit higher.... quite a bit higher.
Glad to see this, my horse loved this exercise, do it once in awhile, seems to help him release some tension. We ride English (foxhunters) but Love to learn. I was just curious what type of bit you are using
Thanks for breaking this down - I need more instruction and practice to get my horse in the right lead. He'll pick up the left lead all day long, but we really struggle on the right lead. I'll practice this and we'll try again! Are there any groundwork exercises you'd recommend to help him understand these cues?
I am going to try this.. only problem is my 6 yr Morgan mare..who was already right handed..had a small fracture of her leg tibia 2022( above the hock..putting leg through a metal gate) and now rarely will take or use the left lead..in riding and observation her loping in the pasture..not sure if I should push it. Think I should?
im confused as to where the pressure is on the shoulder when doing a left or right lead. if going left tip nose to left and is the pressure on the right shoulder from the right leg?
But it is good information. This is what I learned on my own w the nose tipping. In the '70s and 80s I was told to pull the face OPPOSITE the lead, to "open" the shoulder. It instinctively felt wrong to me.
Right now I’m going through a step by step program on my Patreon page it would be a great system to follow. www.Patreon.com/ryanrosehorsemanship It’s $10 per month worth every penny in my opinion thanks
Balance and flow can become affected. Doing this showing would not be acceptable. Lunging and voice before introducing saddle have proven most effective for novices (horse and rider) to learn. It takes time and patience by both but I have never had a bad result with my horses or students. Do you mean for them to always use this method?.
Ryan isn't saying it's the one and only way to select or change leads. He is showing us an excellent method to introduce the concept or work with a horse having trouble.
Why is it always..the horse doesn't want to do this..doesn't want to do that...its never..I dont know what I'm doing... I can't get the horse to pick up the lead...riders need to take lessons with competant instructors...
You have to train a horse to do it. You can’t just expect a horse to do something just because you know how to do something. I do agree he shouldn’t be saying “doesn’t want to” he should be saying “doesn’t know how to”

You broke this down really well, thank you!
Thanks 🙏
I have issues with the left lead. This gives me something to work on!
What a nice little lope this guy has. Will try this once my horse is cleared by the vet!
Agreed, I love riding him
This is what I have been waiting for!! My girl struggles at times!
👌👍

Are you still holding head slight to left when releasing off on left lope, thankyou
Brilliant

👍
So you push with the opposite leg of the lead you want the horse to take? Example, I want left lead I would push with right leg.
What about crossleading?
Yup.
My family and I are beginning our horsemanship journey. Any advice on resources?

@@ryanrosehorsemanship // can we ask questions when we join?
I live in Australia I'm having trouble with my horse she disunites both leads in canter even in a str8 line do you have any tips please
Then, what? Without step one, what’s the queue?
I still don't understand what it means to take the lead.
Why do you bend there ribs to get a lead then?
Nvm you did completely opposite of what you were explaining
I really hate how a lead is always taught based on a arena
I am directionally challenged. Dyslexic. Discalculus. So watching this? I need to be riding myself to absorb it.
Mount up 👍

It's a training tool/idea. You don't do training in the show ring.
Why is it always..the horse doesn't want to do this..doesn't want to do that...its never..I dont know what I'm doing... I can't get the horse to pick up the lead...riders need to take lessons with competant instructors...
My horse doesn't always pick up the correct lead with the trainer riding her. Sometimes it is the horse and they need to build up more muscle.
You have to train a horse to do it. You can’t just expect a horse to do something just because you know how to do something. I do agree he shouldn’t be saying “doesn’t want to” he should be saying “doesn’t know how to”
