Magazine articles on building car models have been an essential resource and inspiration for the hobby for decades.

@ Rick Hanmore I definitely agree with you on the old model magazines still being influential 50+ yrs on in some cases, as they do the same for me & others I'm sure. And I have to thank ALL of you for the years of effort you put into those articles, as you've influenced & improved how many thousands of model builders over that time. It's great to see these interviews!

Tim Boyd's articles in Street Rodder were by far the most inspirational for me. I couldn't wait for each issue and immediately flipped to that section. Tim's track T was and still is the coolest street rod model ever. I had the pleasure of Tim doing a feature in Street Rodder of a 40 Ford I did back in 1984.
This is such a touchstone for me. I was friends with Hank Borger as a 16 year old car enthusiast. I visited his home, we met at the MPC contests in Chicago each year until I entered the Air Air Force in 1974. Last I heard he went to Florida. I don't know if the angels called him home, but I'm grateful for the time he gave me as a teenager. If you're out there, Hank, thanks!
One of the coolest things I’ve learned from other builders is their knowledge of the projects they have worked on. They know more about a particular car than me other buddies that build cars for a living… I love that we all love what we do. Thankful for all the publications.

The first high end model car build I ever saw was a model by Rick Hanmore that Mark Gustavson had convinced him to send to Salt Lake City to enter in a local hobby shop contest. Before then I had no clue what was possible with model car building. I also discovered Scale Auto Enthusiast that same day.
I remember my first introduction to Car Model magazine(1972) and being inspired by Hank Boger. Thanks for all your efforts in putting together these videos Doug, a true labour of love!
What a fantastic episode, all those legends of our hobby, I'm only 45 but I've been reading scale auto since the early 90s, and those guys along with yourself Doug inspired me then and continue to do so.
Thank you for presenting this video. Magazines were what kept me excited about model building and inspired me to increase my talents. I'd always wished that I could build like those masters. I want to express my appreciation to all of those writers who shared their talents and time to encourage myself and others like me to keep improving. My work will never be magazine quality, but those who have posted over the years, as well as those who post now, and I include social media in this, are encouraging me even today.
Looking back at these issues I find the stories to be really timeless.

Scale Auto Enthusiast was instrumental in many people getting back to the hobby in the eighties, myself included. Another great magazine, sadly gone after just over forty issues was Motor Racing Replica News
Great episode on your channel! This takes me back to the early days before the internet! I appreciate all you editors in the model car magazines we had like Scale Auto Enthusiast. I've read and followed all of youse and including you too Doug in the magazines going back to 1979. I thank you all for those wonderful times that you people were contributing to our hobby watching it grow over the years,thank you Doug and every one else!!
What an incredible story. I grew up on Car Model, SAE, even the Ertl Blueprinter. I know every name here like a close relative.😊 Thank you so much for reintroducing them!

Another great video Doug! I have to say that Hank Borger from Car Model magazine was my favorite writer in my early teenage years. I loved his stories, and his building articles were such a great influence on me to try something new and push me to the next level. And many years later, I am so glad I made the trip to NNL 40 and meet the "influencers" that I only read about as a teen, never thinking I would someday be in the same room as them.

Tim Boyd has been my modeling hero since I was a kid…I actually wrote fan mail to him via SAE when I was about 12 years old, and was stunned years later to see one of his builds featuring a decal on the doors depicting a vehicle from Ridgewood, New York…the neighborhood where I grew up!
Thanks for another fantastic and inspiring video, and thanks to the writers who have inspired our hobby throughout our lifetimes!
Don Emmons and Hank Borger AND Tim Boyd were huge inspirations to me as an overly serious teen-age model car builder. Tim was not writing yet but I saw a lot of his cars in Model Car Magazine MPC contest coverage along with another influence - Tom Woodruff. Great video, Doug!

Wow, that was wonderful to see and hear! You have all given me a lot of inspiration through the years. I've started to build models in the early 1970's and started to write for full scale car magazines (custom cars and hot rods) in the mid 1980's. One guy that I'm missing in that feature is Pat Ganahl, he is deeply missed, I was happy to meet him in person and interviewed him10 years ago.
I too loved and gained a lot from Pat's writings.
I thoroughly enjoy each installment.

Great words of advice look in places that you wouldn't normally look in places reach higher it all helps great video
"PEARL WHYTE " is an amazing model i remember having that magazine . i was unbeliveably inspired and without doubt indeed one day wanted to have that level of eye , talent and skill to create not just beauty but something for more than just a model .
thank you Doug for creating this channel and bringing attention to yourself and rick h you guys forsurely have kept me modelling at least in the back of my mind since i was young now that i have all my models back and safe and in one place perhaps that journey will stop being on pause , great modelling takes space and tools and stuff and parts . a LOT OF IT !

Getting my models on the front cover of model cars mag of 2003 was mind blowing not 1 or 2 of them but all 4 of my custom imports builds made me want to take over the modeling world by building some crazy stuff when 2004 came i got hooked up with 21st century toys building diecast toy cars lot of my stuff went into mass production then in 2005 my dad passed from West Nile i walked away from the model hobby for 10 years when i got back into model building things changed so much i told myself time to step up my scratch building skills and im now building some of the baddest large scale models around watch out 2023 2024 2025
I remember the excitement when I opened Car Model one month and found my letter telling Dale Flanagan an easier way to connect Tyco HO track. And I'm going to advocate reading magazines from other modelling disciplines; you'll often find tips and techniques that aren't in the car modelling world. Model railroading mags are an amazing source.
Reading magazines from other model building disciplines is a good insight, like why one should visit an IPMS show. Thanks!
Very nice work. I too have a passion for the hobby. Especially the magazines. I’ve gone into hobby shops in search of them for years and have saved a few. Wish they still published them especially SAE. Always something special about holding the pictures and articles in you own hand. The ideas get the creative juices flowing. Love your videos! Keep up the great work !

Thank you Doug, great video, loved it buddy! I got to thinking, I believe the first copy of Scale Auto that I got was with a order I placed with X-EL models, out of Michigan, Romeo, Michigan I believe..?! Anyways I think it wasn’t like a book or anything, that copy I had gotten was more like a flyer, only a couple of pages, at least I think it was Scale Auto, seems like it was? It was definitely Scale something?? That’s been so long ago now, I just get bits and pieces of memories from long ago, you know? I’m 62 years old and a lot of memories and things I’ve just forgotten over the years, but like I said some comes back to me in bits and pieces now and then. I remember when I was a teenager of 16 or so, we used to have a hobby shop here, like a Mom and Pop hobby shop, but it was also called Excel Hobbies, but like everything else that was good, they closed the doors down sometime in the early 90’s, what a shame too! That was around the time Walmart opened a store on our side of town, they’ve already had a store on the Southside of Lexington ( Ky) that side of town was the “money” side of town, you know what I mean? The upper class if you will, anyhow whenever they opened this store here, it wasn’t too awful long after is when Excel shut down. They couldn’t compete with Walmart, back then Walmart had a big isle of model kits and supplies, also other hobby materials or whatever. I guess that’s what happened to a lot of Mom and Pop hobby shops across the country, none could compete with the big chain box stores and things. Anyhow, I’m rattling on Doug, my apologies! Thanks Doug for another really informative and entertaining episode. I grew up before these times and was building model aircraft during what they called the "Golden years" ( not true we are in that era now) It was nice to see and hear from the "Big Guy's" that influenced me as I soon transitioned and have all SAE from #2 and build mostly Model Cars for the last 35 years or so. Surprised you didn't mention Model Cars Magazine?

An the tiny tiny town in cannada we lived in was called Pawasson out side of north Bay Ontario and I was ten and me and my brothers would walk from our house to downtown/shopping center square and go the the tiny hole in the wall Chinese buffet that mom and dad would leave a tab open for us to eat lunch during weekends and summer time while out playing with friends and then I would go to the little hobby store once a week with my allowance and buy a model car kit. The owner of store got me into it by saying here kid tale this kit and paints and go home build this car bring car back and put it on the window display with all other cars and my dad helped me build it cuse he use to do them as a kid and it came out amazing hisiuth hit floor wheny.dad told him I did 99 percent of the work my self whole dad sat next to me whole time telling me what to do step by step to make a nice clean built box stock model ot was a 1969 Chevelle SS in Chevelle red with white racing stripes and 454 motor and from then on I would put 1 car once a month on his window out of the 4 I built that month that I bought with my allowance. I'm 30 and still building and same store he had huge 12 lane 1/24 scale slot car oval , road course and drag strip and I built my first scratch built brass slot car chassis and car to race and it was a 1985 Richard petty car I built for nascar oval and nascar road course and I took a 1988 elcamino with a Monte Carlo SS nose and rool pan to build a slot drag car and we raced for dollar bills drag racing and had points series for every type of slot racing they ran as well. And I was racing full size racecars against my mom at the asphalt track we owned and built models and slot car raced during cold winters in off season of racing
