- Voted Best In Show at NNL #16, Tim Kolankiewicz's 1961 Chevy Impala custom, the "Coral Aura", still stuns years later. In this video, Tim fills us in on the details we missed when we admired it at NNL #40. We also get a bonus glimpse of his '61 Comet backwards bubble-top custom, and hear what influences this lifelong model car builder.

Thank you to Tim for his generosity in agreeing to be our first remote interview by video call, sharing his thoughts with the Model Car Muse community, and for sending the wonderful additional photographs seen throughout the video. Thank you also to Bill Barrett, of the Tri-State Model Car Club, for letting us capture his insight in Toledo in 2019.

Thanks Doug! It was great to sit down with one of my own muses and share some stories behind this model. Much like your models, your videos are top of the class. Looking forward to many more!
This is crazy. Tim if you read this I am one of the roadies from Iron Maiden that sold you that kit. Your being modest. You left the part out, while haggling over the price, you guaranteed us that it would be a show winning model. So my partner sold it to you for 15 bucks. I have long since admired your talents. Doug you have the absolute finest channel dedicated to model cars on the web. Please continue this as it is a pleasure to watch and learn.
Wow, what a way to reconnect! I remember you guys like it was yesterday. Let me know if you have something else that needs to be built!
👍👍👍👍
An ABSOLUTE GORGEOUS CREATION ‼️‼️ God Bless All 👍👍, Gary
Toledo in the 1990's..........what an era. I'd trade todays ebay and internet buying of old kits and even the high tech products we are getting for the Toledo weekend back then. I can still feel the mood of the buildings. Thanks for showcasing Tim's work and the remembrance of an era. Thx
I have had the pleasure of seeing this model several times in person. It is certainly one of my favorite builds of all time. This video has shown me some things I didn't know before. Truly a brilliant piece in both design and execution. Thanks again, Doug, for another great video.
Thanks for the kind words Bill!
Cool memory 🇺🇸👍🏻
It's the little things, that go unnoticed, that really set a model build apart that no one really understands.
The fact that the little things like how perfect the doors fit, (door gaps are equal), into the body is what I think are amazing. And ALL of the trim is perfectly detailed.
It's so seamless it goes unnoticed.
Love bubble tops!!! Beautiful Build!!!!
Tim’s execution is always top shelf. Near, straight and always finished to perfection
What a wonderful interview! It was great to hear the backstory on an iconic model from almost 30 years ago! Thank you both for sharing this!
WOW, Doug. That was GOOD! I'm looking forward to more interviews like this. Very inspiring and entertaining.
The Coral Aura always impressed me. During all these years I had no idea of Tim Kolankiewicz appearance, Well, he's a super nice person and has a great aura.
Absolutely loving the channel. Tim has shown up a couple of times now and very grateful as I somehow have missed his work up until now. A real gift.
Great video! My foggy memory had me thinking the Coral Aura was derived from the Lindberg '61, learn something new every day, or perhaps forget something new every day? I remember the day Tim sat down with (IIRC) a stock white Impala or Bel Air build early in his model "career" with Pat Covert and Tim asked Pat to point out everything on that model that he needed to improve upon. Obviously Tim took it to heart and really blossomed as a modeler from that day forward. I remember that Toledo show, that was quite an accomplishment and well-deserved!
Vary cool model great interview really enjoyed thanks
I remember picking up SAE at my shop and staring at that car for a long time. I build drag cars almost exclusively but somehow this car and your white car Doug really spoke to me. Nice to hear how it all came together.

I really enjoy your channel...this car is spectacular!!
I found a 1930s slush cast 4 door sedan at an antique shop in 1995. Made by national products/ banthrico. They rear wheels were smashed out of it. I got it for 5 bucks. I eventually did some kit bashing and found plastic leaf springs . With epoxy I rebuilt the suspension. Then found axels and wheels at thomas toys. Come to find out how rare these cars really are. Love your channel.
Awesome video Doug!
I hope you do more of these features on show winning models of the past. Maybe your Studebaker next?
I remember when he built that car we was I the same club me and him got our car and the magazine . Bryant
