So great you have caught the essence of the song. Some people get lost in the beauty of the music and don't realize the tragedy behind it. Yes, that's the magic of Tom Jones. Amazing and emotional reaction! Thanks and God Bless!
This song is one of my earliest musical memories. My mother LOVED Tom Jones, and played his What's New Pussycat album, and it stayed on the turntable, playing incessantly.
Oh my! I haven’t heard this song since I was a kid, maybe 50 years ago. I’m sure this was in my dad’s record collection, and I have a vague memory of him singing it as well (dad had a fine baritone voice, and did a bit of amateur musical theater). He is long gone now, so for me this has evoked memories of dad and his warm, rich singing voice. Thanks.
MOM, great explanation. I heard both sides as a veteran, but was too young during Vietnam era. Beautiful, the way you explain it about family and seeing those "kids" who were headed for war. Thanks for the explanation and letting another generation know what this means.
Thanks for another burst of nostalgia from the UK (my mother was from England) in the 1960s, where I grew up from ages 7 in '64 to 18 in '75. Tom Jones and Englebert Humperdinck songs were all over TV and radio in England back then. As noted in my comment to your "Delilah" reaction just now, the story of "Green, Green Grass" is sung by a man on death row who's reminiscing about his youth just before being executed for murder ("For there's a guard and there's a sad, old padre...along that road I'll walk at daybreak...before they lay me...") Capital punishment (hanging) was officially abolished in the UK in 1969 after a 4-year suspension (according to my online research just now) but had been used less and less frequently anyway. I vaguely remember references to it in the news when I was a kid. Most Tom Jones songs are way more upbeat than this and "Delilah," but all of his music is great.
One of my favourite songs of mine [of all time] when I was a child [and even now!] and remember by father always singing it [he was a soldier at the time]. I went to military schools too in the 60/70's [father based mainly in Germany]. A sad song beautifully sung by Tom.
I love moms take on it. Also being a military brat I related the same way as her to this song. Barricks were often painted grey and had a guard at the door, most squadrons had a chaplain, priest, or padre who also went on patrols. Patrols often started at daybreak. This is sad as he dreamt of home, family, and his love then woke to the war, went on patrol and died, almost as if the dream had been an omen.
I played this song for year in my band and it was only recently I had to wright the words down for a friend. I had no idea is about someone on death row dreaming about his home and family.
He actually did do a video of this song from inside a jail cell on his own TV show. Definitely about going to execution in the morning. "Then I awake and look around me at four grey walls that surround me" "There's a sad old padre, on and on we'll walk at daybreak" as "they'll lay me 'neath the green green grass of home".
Thank you for that ladies, It just reminds me of my dear late mother (RIP) she was such a Tom Jones fan and when she finally managed to see him live she was just so so happy, Made me tear up a bit thinking of her now she's not here anymore, Again thank you both.
Some years ago Tom came home to Pontypridd to do a concert in the park. When he sang ‘the old house is still standing’ he pointed to it as his home village of Treforest is visible from the park.
I love how your lyrical dissections can teach me new things about songs I've listened to for 20years. I too loved this song when I was in the military. This one and 'Leaving on a jet plane'
My mom would request this song when sitting around a campfire with my guitar. Good old days, I miss her. Bobby Bare did this song too, very good. Thank you.

"Tie a Yellow Ribbon" is very similar to this song. I'm not American but I think it has become a tradition for families to tie ribbons around trees on their street or property to welcome loved one's home from the Military. Song is actually about a guy getting out of prison!

1973 the Vietnam War was ending and Tony Orlando and Dawn hit big with Tie A Yellow Ribbon Around The Old Oak Tree as many returned from the War after doing their time. 3 long years for those who joined.
I was in a band and we used to cover this song. The bass player one night sang "and there's the old oak tree, the one I used to pee on..." we all lost it and couldn't do the rest of the song...only Tom Jones could sing this right and that is why it became a big hit. Yes, Tom's rendition is very emotional and touching. Appreciate the Viet Nam era interpretation and military's adaptation...I had forgotten that. However I hated tie a Yellow Ribbon 'young the Old Oak tree, a similar song only getting out of jail. It was a "happy happy" dumb song, and the military adapted that later during Desert Storm. Yuch! This song was not written for Tom. It is not about his childhood. It is not about Wales, although Wales has adopted it as their own. It was written by legendary Nashville songwriter Curly Putnam and it was a country hit for Porter Waggoner in 1965. Jerry Lee Lewis put it on an album and that’s where Tom discovered it and, in 1966, turned it into one of his biggest hits which he still performs today. You can interpret the song anyway you want to, but it’s about a prisoner on death row who is to be hanged for his unspecified crimes and how, on the eve of his death, his thoughts are of home. 2/ "Parisienne Walkways" KIVE In Montreux.
Enjoy Ladies:)
Both very good. Gary Moore is so underrated, he could make a guitar speak like no one else.
@@peterericakaiser1717 I bought my first records in London in 1960 and these are 2 of the finest Live performances I have seen on UA-cam and no spoilers but I love the "surprise" at Montreux which could have deceived fans not familiar with Gary's mischievousness😀
From watching several of your videos now I can always tell when you need that box of tissues cuz I kind of have figured out what songs trigger you the most and I knew this one would trigger you because you weren't expecting him to be talking about the last time being buried underneath the Green Green Grass of Home. Like I said previously beautiful song I Love It but my God is at one of the saddest last verses I've ever heard I think the only person who's ever moved me that much was Karen Carpenter.
Yes you must know me! That song definitely got me emotional. Beautifully sung heart breaking song.
