I think you missed the fact that he was singing about home BEFORE he went to his execution!!😲
I didn't realize it was an execution. I thought he was dying and then it was his funeral. My mom always loved this song.
They both missed it!
They missed the message all together. I hope they will comment about this in their next video.
@bonniespruin6369 sad old Padre. We'll walk at daybreak. Yeah he was hung.
Execution? I thought it was just that he was in prison. Life sentence and won’t get out until he dies.
You didn't hear it. He was going to be executed at day break. He was going to be underneath the green grass.
Yes, the pleasant melody and vocal takes you off guard, so you don't realize (until you consider the lyrics) that this song is about a dream of memories just before his death.
That late 60s/early 70s era had a few hit songs with a twist in the tail in their lyrics, and this one was a classic example.
@@rjjcms1Lola for example :-)
His on death row!
Yep They missed it, you can't beat British irony
I'm surprised Amber didn't get it. "Arm in arm we'll walk at daybreak and again I'll touch the green green grass of home". He's getting executed. "..Lay me, neath the green green grass of home".
He was dreaming of home from prison cell and he went home in a box after his execution. Buried under the oak tree. Nothing to do with church or country music. 😳
I'm surprised they missed that. Amber usually catches the lyrics and we see when she gets it.
Well, half right. It *is* a country song and was a huge hit on the country charts when first released by Porter Wagner, I think. But you are right, that this not a “church” song. But is a very sad ain’t about a man about to die by execution in prison. It is not a song about nostalgia, but a tragedy.
He was executed!
Sorry to say this but you Americans do not understand music. Awesome tune yeah!! No idea of what the song is about. Not just this song but really lots of other songs. You are so naive
😅Even a school child gets the ending ZZZ four walls that surround me, I was only dreaming.... he was in jail waiting to be executed are you thick are what?
I am surprised you did not take note of the dark turn of the song. The fact that he was in prison and being executed.
The way they sway and smile to a man singing about going to his death. Amusing.
Putting out 3 videos a day they miss a lot, not long ago they commented on McCartney solo singing Helter Skelter, thinking it was the Beatles version.
@@user-xb5qx4fk9d I think we've all missed stuff in songs on first listens, and most of us don't do our listening on-camera with tens of thousands of people watching us with bated breath, waiting for us to react satisfactorily to a favorite bit. Heck, there are songs I listened to for years before I realized what they were actually singing about. It happens. Given how much J&A do get in songs -- especially given that 2-ish years ago, they couldn't have told you who any of these people were and hadn't heard most of these genres let alone songs -- I think people in the comments here could chill and cut them a little slack.
Also, it's worth remembering that these folks have full-time jobs, are parents to three young children (including a toddler), have actual, normal lives around all that, and still make time to record and upload three videos a day that we get to watch for free. The fact that they've kept up this schedule for nearly 3 years is actually pretty impressive. If they very occasionally miss a song or pick the wrong video, is it really that big a deal?
You really have to listen to the story in this song or you'll miss the true story of a death row inmate going home in his dreams! It also hit hard with Vietnam Veterans as it came out during the height of the war and a lot never came home except in their dreams!
He wakes up to the 4 gray walls that (now) surround him and realizes his memories were a dream. "For there's a guard, and a sad old heartbreak. On and on I'll walk at daybreak. . ." Is about a convicted man knowing he'll die at daybreak because of that sad old heartbreak. He remembers home and how it was, but he's not going to actually see it, only be sent back home to be buried under that old oak tree at his funeral. A lot of reactors miss that too.
I am not sure but it isn't "heartbreak" but sad old padre.
A follow on from Delilah.
How could they not put 2 and 2 together? A guard and a sad old padre. Usually Amber pays attention to the words.
Hi. Wasn't he saying "sad old padre" as in the usual guard and clergy walking him to his execution." ? Hmm I'll have to google that!
@@bryanwhitton1784 Could be. Going from memory. I remember taking my mom to see him in Iowa back in the day. We never missed his TV show. Either way, he's not going alive.
Anything Tom Jones is outstanding.
But you realize he was in jail and the walk to death and buried under the old oak tree.
Comprehending that would require them to have.....comprehension.
@@davidlionheart2438 Plus, as far as I can tell, they never even look at our comments!
Didn’t you catch it?
The four grey walls and the guard and the old priest , he was in prison and about to be executed and then his body will be brought back home to be buried under the green green grass of home….
No they didn't.
Guys, I don’t think you truly caught the meaning of the lyrics at the end. He was a prisoner about to be executed the next morning at daybreak: “there’s a guard and a sad old padre. Arm in arm we’ll walk at daybreak…”
One of Tom's big hits from the 60's , a fine ballad showcasing his voice. Yes his very first hit and No1 in the UK 'It's not unusual' is a great song.
'It's Not Unusual' was written for Sandy Shaw but she turned it down, so it was given to Tom Jones instead.
@@CrankCase08 Interested to hear that, maybe it was more suited to Tom
I don’t think you were listening to the lyrics at the end. He was actually on death row in a prison and put to death and then laid beneath the green green grass of home.
Comprehending that would require them to have.....comprehension.
They thought He Stopped Loving Her Today because he just got over her.
@@dgpatter I was wondering about that song and if they missed the point as well.
The song spells out the story. Not hard to understand what is going to happen.
As they say " if you know you know". They didn't know.
He was singing about returning home after being executed in prison, and being laid beneath that green green grass of home.
"Then I awake and look around me
At four grey walls that surround me
And I realize, yes, I was only dreaming
For there's a guard and there's a sad, old padre
On and on, we'll walk at daybreak
Again, I'll touch the green, green grass of home
Yes, they'll all come to see me
In the shade of that old oak tree
As they lay me
'Neath the green, green grass of home"
I went to a Tom Jones concert years ago at Chastain Park in Atlanta. BEST CONCERT EVER!!!! He hit that stage and did not stop. Amazing performer.
Me too. Saw him in a very small old movie house in Easton PA, very intimate. WOW! we were just feet away! He was seventy at the time and still dead sexy!!!!!!! I wanted to marry him when I grew up! haha
@@KrisChanteuse My son was at this concert, he was 10/11 at the time. Tom started singing She’s a Lady. Jacob looks at us and says “The panties will fly”.
google Sir Tom Jones_Bethzienna Williams' 'cry to me'_ blind audition_The Voices UK 2019, there is longer version of it
I left Atlanta 10 years ago to go out to Wyoming. The only thing I miss is Chastain Park concerts with the Atlanta Synphony playing.
Beautiful song sung by The Great Legend Tom Jones
His cover of Prince’s hit KISS is killer!
He definitely makes it his own!!!
''i think i better dance now.''
It sucks, I prefer Prince
It's a collaboration with Art of Noise, give credit where it's due
I can’t believe you guys missed the message in this song, the last few lines tells it all
The duet performance with Tom and Janis was "Raise Your Hand". "Green Green Grass of Home" was a country hit made popular by Porter Waggoner, Dolly Parton's former singing partner and mentor.
Yes Porter Wagner....
@@user-ii4zf5iq3tWagoner
and before Porter Wagoner, it was recorded by now-forgotten country singer Johnny Darnell.
Elvis and Charley Pride also recorded this song. I've never heard a bad version of it.
A song with a twist in the tale.....
The song is about a prisoner facing the hanging tree that dreams of home and walks out with a padre to face the rope and then be laid under that old oak tree at home...
Curly Putman wrote this song. Another well known song of his that you guys have reacted to is "He Stopped Loving Her Today". Here's more about the meaning of this song that may have been missed:
"The song is about a man who returns home after a long time and is welcomed by his family and friends. However, the final verse reveals that the man is actually in prison on death row and daydreaming about his homecoming. The song's final line, “Yes, they'll all come to see me, In the shade of that old oak tree, As they lay me 'neath the green, green grass of home” refers to the man's burial in his hometown after his execution."
Almost our second national anthem here in Wales .
I am always curious on how long it takes the listener to realize the true story. Great song and Tom Jones owns it.
Prison execution song. 😉
Obviously longer than this video. They didn't get it.
@@JasonWicklund 😁
It took me a long time…
@@Jen-in-Texas That is part of the fun of it. Great song. A bit of a mystery until the end.
And even then its a bit vague.
The plot twist blew right past...
He was executed. And then he was buried beneath the green green grass of home.
He has a great version of "You Can Leave Your Hat On", Pure Gold!
This is actually about a prisoner on death row. Dreaming aboout home before his execution in the morning. Not too many reactors get the meaning of this song (I think I saw one video where they understood what the song was about).
Later, the powers that be, forbid the ending of the song about the last walk to dawn to be sung, so the lyrics were changed 😡
I've watched at least 10 reactions to this and every single one got it.
@@TruthIsNotTemporary not true. He still sings it.
@@TruthIsNotTemporaryno the lyrics weren't changed.
You missed the point on this one -- the song is about a man who is about to be taken to the gallows to be executed. (To be fair to you guys, the verse where he sang that part was overshadowed by the background singers). In the last verse he talks about how he'll be laid to rest under the old oak tree. Very sad song.
simply one of the greatest singers whos ever walked the earth lol
I loved watching the Tom Jones show 1969-71 my high school years, he was one of my favorite variety shows, I wish they had more shows like his. ❤Tom ❤Jay & Amber Peace✌️ and Love ❤️ Gary
“For there’s a guard and a sad old Padre..arm in arm will walk at daybreak.”
The irony is that he was dreaming of being home, but he’s being executed so his trip home will be for his funeral ‘neath the shade of hte old oak tree.
You got a surprise coming
..lol
The 60's had so many great pop artists that came on the scene. You should check out Gary Puckett & The Union Gap. A very popular group that had many hits in the late 60's. Check out their song, "Lady Willpower." This is a group that is equally enjoyable live as they are in stereo. 💯👍
My mom's favorite Tom Jones song. It always brings a tear to my eye. She passed far too soon.
"in the shade of the ole oak tree as they lay me 'neath the green green grass of home." Yah, execution and burial. Typical country song of the late 60s and early 70s.
Did you realize he was being executed? He was dreaming about home in prison before the guard and padre come to walk him to the gas chamber or electric chair. Then he will be laid beneath the green, green grass of home.
Love Tom! This song is so sad! Great pick!
Some British people thought of Tom as 'our Elvis' and you could well imagine Elvis singing this song.
He did actually.
We had this album at home... growing up in the 60s. Whenever I hear this song, I'm taken back to our living room and the image of my little brother sitting on the floor in tears as he learned the meaning of what was happening in the song. He was devastated and completely heartbroken. It is a precious memory. I love Tom Jones!
Not only is this my favorite Tom Jones song but in my top 5 favorite songs of all time.
Great choice. Great song. Great singer.
Hi Jay and Amber! It's Andrew Erroch fae Paisley in Scotland here. I've seen Tom Jones live in concert several times, and he never disappoints. We can see why he has been going for so long, like other legendary artists. They've just got what it takes. Apparently, Elvis Presley was quoted saying 'Green Green Grass of Home' was his favourite song. Æx 🙏
This sure is a sad one ..
great voice, story song ..
I been to two Tom Jones concerts and they were absolutely Great.
One of the best slow, sad songs of all-time!
Sir Tom Jones! His voice sounds so rich in this song 💝 The song he performed with Janis is Raise Your Hands
My oldest sister had it SO bad for Tom Jones way back when. We teased her endlessly about it. We were so mean to her! haha.
Tom be swinging in the breeze 😂😂😂⏰⏰
I haven't heard this song since the 60's. It is so good!
He was singing about his death, and being taken home to be buried under the green green grass of home.
First time I EVER heard him. I never ever knew WHO "Him" was. Oh I used to cry as a teenager! He was going out to be strung up or shot. His body would rest beneath his old friend- the tree he grew up with and his loved ones that are still alive.
aye, it's a powerful song. defo needs listening to again
Most people don't understand Green Green Grass of home is about a death row inmate being executed
Actually if you just listen and have common sense it's pretty easy to understand.
I have to disagree with you. I believe most people understand the song completely. It's all spelled out in the song.
er no.. MOST people understand it perfectly.
No most people understand it. They didn't but most do.
Tom always gives me goosebumps
Last time I heard this song, it was playing at my father's funeral over 25 years ago. He loved Tom Jones.
This song is short and simple and tells a very layered story, but on the other hand it doesn't. As if you see it in front of you, it's moving... My favorite Tom Jones song, love it!
When it comes to understandin some songs, it's like you're on another planet😂
mama always said listenin to boy Jay was like a box o chocolates....
ya never know what ya gonna get😂
You paused at the perfect moment but missed the point after resuming. The 4 grey walls that surround him was his prison cell and the guard ans sad old padre will walk arm and arm to his exicution
The unofficial trilogy Never fall in love then Delilah ending in The Green Green Grass of Home
I don't even have to hear it again; this song moves me. R.I.P. Dad. Thanks y'all- memories running down my face.✌️❤️
Y'all got me crying. This is my childhood right here.😢
Getting executed?
Amber this is an old country song written by Porter Waggoner ,in which the man is about to be executed but dreams of home the night before.Afterwards he is really home at his funeral buried underneath the oak tree. You guys missed it completely.
I was wondering if anyone was going to give Porter Wagoner credit for this, and quite frankly, I like Porter's version much better.
Written by Curly Putman, not Porter
Porter Wagoner was the first to have a hit with the song, but it was written by Curly Putnam Jnr. The best version is by Jerry Lee Lewis, and I say that as a loyal Tom Jones fan.
I keep watching them to see exactly when they get what the song is about lol.
This song is a classic from my youth.
Tom Jones, a true legend.
Jay & Amber, you'll love his Big Hit "Its Not Unusual" !!!!
It is easy to miss the meaning of this song the first time. It is so beautiful, the ending could catch you off guard and pass you buy on how well done it was....lol
Yes Amber, you were on to something! You nailed it. Both are known for their versatility.
This is more of a Funeral Dirge, He's waiting to walk the last mile.
THE VOICE! Nuff said!!
If you want the very best of Tom Jones…. When his wife was dying she made him
Promise to not crumble when she’s gone. The song is “I won’t Crumble “ have your tissues !
Like Tom was ever going to crumble!
Don't feel bad---I'm 70 years old and have loved this song for years and never realized he was going to be put to death!! Love you guys!
Don't know how you can love a song and not even bother to listen to the lyrics. It's plain as day.
@diane216: Ignore that pretentious twat who replied. Like me, you probably heard this when you were about 6 or 7 years old and didn't get the meaning. The people who are "explaining" the lyrics are probably over 20 years of age and heard it recently, so they got it.
I can relate to you - Same age.
You have never done I’ll never fall in love again aged 27 it’s a must! Also the 80th anniversary d day… I know he’s speaking about him walking his last walk to his death but the way you interpreted it is the way a lot of people interpret it, just a beautiful song sang by the Great Sir Tom Jones 👍🏻😁🏴
Amber always has such a great reaction when she discovers the hidden, true nature of some songs --- but this time she completely missed it. Fangirling over Tom Jones can cause even the most astute female to miss out on what is passing by her at the time. 🤣🤣
I think you guys missed the twist, the four walls were a jail cell and the sad old padre was leading him to oak tree were he was to be hanged then buried beneath the green green grass of home. Im shocked Amber missed this 🤣❤️
Daddy loved this song, so I'm sorry I'm so late to the video. I knew the song was going to make me cry. Daddy loved Tom and Elvis, he sounded a lot like them when he sang. Daddy's neath the green green grass of Home now, and I know he'll be waiting for me when I go Home. ❤ Peace of Christ, V.❤
My Mom’s favorite song, and she could sing ALL his songs. She isn’t here anymore, so thank you. One of my favorites of his is his video remake of Prince’s “Kiss”.
My mom had this album....listened to it endlessly on the big stereo console!
Absolutely Country! We used to do it based on Porter Wagoner’s version. I remember the lead singer often started crying half way. So everybody else sang the last verse for her.😊
Truely captivating song. The intense feeling of longing for something lost. Some songs capture you in that way. I don't normally enjoy poetry that much but this is great.
This was also famously covered by country singer "Whispering Bill" Anderson. Such a bittersweet tune.
Always makes me cry. He was right about the green grass, though. I thought the Irish were exaggerating before I saw it for myself. Home, grass or no, has meaning, and memories.
fantastic song.
one of my very top favorites.
As a Caerphilly boy myself, your reaction is heart warming ❤
Jesus guys. I was 7 when this song came out and even I knew the meaning of the song back then 🤣
You didn’t get the fact he’s in prison dreaming about his home and ‘they’ll lay me beneath that old oak tree’
The twist was right where you stopped it. Listen again. Also, I think Tom's live performance of "I'll Never Fall In Love Again" is his most impressive.
Didn't you listen??? He was in prison and they hanged him. How could you have missed the whole point of the song???
It's Jay and Amber. How can you be surprised they didn't understand anything about it?
Kids have no clue who the sad old Padre is. It's a trope that has been lost. I have yet to see a reactor get this. Much like "He Stopped Loving Her Today" goes over everyone's heads. Same songwriter, by the way.
@curtismartin2866 this is the first reactor I've seen that DIDN'T get it.
@@rebeccasimmers3107 wow!
@@davidlionheart2438that was unnecessary. Why do you follow them if you're just gonna belittle them?
I heard him sing this on one of the voice shows, I can't believe how he sounds even better than his recording in the sixties.👍♥️🙏✝️✌️😎
One of his best!! Saw him in concert last year with several songs from his newest album (released in 2021) and it was amazing. Unlike some groups where everyone just waits for their hits, all his songs were fun.
Sir Tom Jones (among another couple of giants with one being the great Irma Thomas, who'd unfortunately pared a few years ago.) was featured in a special that was with Hugh Laurie (Dr. House) on Hugh's trip to New Orleans for the first time on a music journey. (Quite literally) It was a public television fund-raising event. DEFINITELY check it out. It's about an hour long, and you're left wanting more when it ends. (I've probably watched it 5 times in it's completion, and countless clip views.)
this song reminds me of my grandparents, heard this at least 10 times.
Written by Nashville songwriter Curly Putman, the words to Green, Green, Grass of Home tell the tale of a condemned prisoner who is longing to escape to the green, green grass of home. At the end of the song, it was revealed that the man is facing execution, and he will be coming home only to be buried.
Finally you got to this signature song by Sir Tom Jones. If you remember he replied to me on this song.
It's nice hearing another rendition of this song. The version of this song I have on my play list Elvis sung.
DEAD MAN WALKING!
My grandpa would loved this reaction
Another good one was I'll Never Love Again. He's amazing with that one.😊
When his show was on in the 60's, my Mom was camped in front of that tv and us kids had to be quiet! I'd say she had a crush on Tom!
