PLEASE RELEASE ME was actually a country song from 1949 and charted several times. Baby Gap is correct in her assessment of Engelbert sounding a tad "country" in his delivery. Humperdinck is English and born in India. His manager was Gordon Mills who named his artists after historical figures. Tom Jones from the Fielding novel, Humperdinck named after the German opera composer of HANSEL AND GRETEL and Gilbert O'Sullivan after the comic opera duo of Gilbert and Sullivan (Pirates of Penzance). Actually, Tom Jones recorded the song as a gospel song but Engelbert's version was released first. It was #1 for 7 weeks and broke The Beatles streak of 17 consecutive #1 hits. At 86 "Eng" is still touring.
@@generationgapreacts Great Reaction, as always Ladies. I have always loved his voice from being a child, when mam & dad would play his music on the gramophone (record player,) most weekends, it was a done thing back then, along with Tom Jones, and another favourite of mine MATT MONROE (the singing bus driver) I would recommend giving MATT a listen, you may be surprised, these artists were from a certain era, they had STYLE, and in my opinion, although they are from a long gone era, they are still much better then most of what we have on the radio these days ❤
Another classic song which I remember growing up with so to hear this again is a wonderful reminder of my youth. Those were the days...Thank you ladies once again for a superb reaction.
Engelbert Humperdinck is a British singer, who in the 1960s was the resident singer at a Wimbledon (South London) venue. I used to visit the venue most weekends and we all knew that he had a very special singing voice, plus he was a very nice man, too. He and Tom Jones were great friends and both are (they are still singing when asked) tremendous singers.
I had not heard him sing in a long time. I had forgotten how incredible his voice was. His real name is Arnold George Dorsey. He picked a great stage name.
Born Arnold George Dorsey MBE,professionally known as one of the finest middle-of-the-road balladeers around. Achieved international prominence in 1967. He was born in Chennai, India 1936.
My gosh, I had forgotten how handsome Engelbert is. Of course I love his voice but I so enjoy looking at him too. lol I have no idea how he got from the name he was born with, Arnold George Dorsey to Engelbert Humperdinck...but it works. Thanks ladies for the bump in my memory. Take care and be well. Peace.
His manager came up with the name, I seem to remember him saying, Tom Jones ( who he was a great friend of at the time)and he fell about laughing not realising their manager was serious.

This is a good alehouse song ,we used to sing it in the police cells when arrested for being drunk & disorderly ,so the cops would release us & let us go ,so they could get some sleep .
One of the greatest singers ever, fabulous voice Tom Jones gets all the attention he gets nearly none. Their equally as good no reason. Im listening to this great song since 67 never got tired of it. Saw him in concert in 79 in Hershey Pa, was fabulous, many very good songs. Believe hes 83 performs occasionally.
Humperdinck was born "Arnold George Dorsey". His original stage name was Gerry Dorsey. He had mild success but a few years later, his manager, Gordon Mills, suggested "Engelbert Humperdinck", and the rest is history. You should definitely watch his self-titled TV show that debuted in 1969. The level of talent on there is stunning, and you get to hear Enge sing several songs each episode. I am absolutely HOOKED. I react to Engelbert similar to how Momma bear is reacting. But I'm a 59-year-old straight male.🤔
When I was young (late 80's) I met Mr. Humperdinck on New Year's Eve in Issaquah, Washington. . I just subscribed to your channel today and this random reaction appears. effin crazy.
I'm so glad you're introducing the music of Engelbert Humperdinck to your channel. He has one of the greatest male singing voices of all time. Engelbert has a 5 octave range. "Please Release Me" was his first major hit and the song that really launched his career. Great song. An interesting note is that Gordon Mills was his manager who also managed Tom Jones. 2 of my personal favorite Engelbert Humperdinck songs that I'd like for you to react to are "After The Lovin'" and "A Man Without Love" As the case with Tom Jones, he is in his 80's and still performing great concerts.
I still remember this song from my childhood that he sang at the Knokke festival on Belgium television ,wich was held in the 1960s,when countries competed each other in terms of singing. That also became his International breaktrough.❤
I can remember my Great Grandmother lived with Us after my Great Grandfather died & I was 1 or 2 & used to reach up look at her in bed & she used to play Englerbert Humperdink God rest her soul I can’t remember the song Something to do with Roses I think But memories from years gone by many years
His parent were of british origin but he was raised in Chennai India for the first 10 years of his life, and then went back to the UK. Some say he is also of anglo indian heritage which might explain why you have noticed a strangeness in his accent, because he does sound a bit anglo indian when he sings.
I first saw Englebert as Gerry Dorsey in a club in Bristol. At the time he was an average singer, singing average songs. It was only later when i saw him, that he hadmatured into a wonderful balad singer of international fame with that ridiculous name.
This song was a huge hit for country music star, Ray Price in 1954, more than a decade before Engelbert sang it. Ray Price had many hits but "Please Release me" his breakthrough hit. It was a little more upbeat than Engelbert's cover
He is such a talented artist. I have been fortunate enough to see him in concert many times and he never disappoints! Such a nice man and reacts well with his audience....(I got one of his hankies!! Smells so good!❤😘)

Maravilloso! Eine nostalgische Reminiszenz. Engelberts cover (1967) of this Eddie Miller song (1949) is by far the most famous one and rather for the elder generation. Elvis' powerful version with proper guitar rhythm appeals more to the younger generation. Compare: Elvis Presley - Release Me 1970 ( Best Version ) HD

Englebert Humperdink is from Leicester in England ...... he may have done the odd country song, i can't remember, but it was never really his type of music.

Engelbert Humperdinck was a 19th century Classical music composer. In the 1960's Joe Dorsie used it as a stage name!
Indeed, a late 19th Century composer, mostly of operas; his most famous being the magical "Hänsel & Gretel"
