Thank you! I was so sure he had harmed himself with the knife but as many people have pointed out, he killed Delilah! I forgot the word “ominous” - but that’s a better word for the sound of the band.

@@generationgapreacts when I heard it when I was a young boy I instantly came to the conclusion that Tom Jones character in the song murdered Delilah. That is how I've always looked at it. I don't think he heard himself and if he did he committed suicide after he had killed Delilah. Hence, the concept of breaking down the door. So in effect, it was a murder suicide. Thank you for your time and I thank you both for your reactions with respect always, Brant Heavner 😁😁👋👍

Great Choice. Delilah is one of Tom Jones signature songs and has always been my personal favorite. Every time you see a Tom Jones live performance it's always a treat. Delilah is my favorite song by Tom Jones you should give a listen to Engleburt Humpadink, he also has a great voice all his songs are worth listening to. It is very hard to choose favorite singers and groups from the late fifties to the early 70's ther are all great singers for their type of music, I was very lucky to be born in that generation The Baby Boomers I was born in Nov. 1950 Thanx for giving me a chance to remember those days Jimmy !!

The wat Tom sang this song was a story.. He told you about the woman he's in love with. Then what she was doing to break his heart. Then when disrespect of laughter in his face. And the anger of love and he silenced her so she will never hurt him again.
He sings the songs in a way that you can close your eyes and see what is happening while he sings it. That's a gift.
Marty Robbins does the ecat same with "El Paso", Feelina and El Paso City".

I'm 67 but grew up from ages 7 to 18 in England, my mother's homeland, and remember when Tom Jones at the height of his popularity had his own TV show over there and this song was everywhere on radio and TV. (Old joke: Guy goes to psychiatrist and tells him "I can't stop singing 'Green, Green Grass of Home." Shrink says "That sounds like Tom Jones Syndrome." Patient says "Tom Jones Syndrome? What's that? Is it common?" Shink says "It's not unusual.") Have you reviewed "It's Not Unusual?" Another Tom Jones hit from when I was about 13. "Green, Green Grass of Home is another sad song that could be a follow-up to "Delilah" story-wise. It focuses on a man's reminiscences of his childhood neighborhod where, at the end, it turns out, he's going to be buried after being executed for murder. (Britain still had capital punishment, though it was used increasingly less frequently, in the 1960s.) As has been noted, Tom Jones had no formal vocal training but he's from Wales, where singing is a longstanding tradition (now maybe in churches, and decades ago reportedly in coal mines where workers sang to pass the time while swinging picks on their shifts. ) My wife and I made a special trip to Cardiff, where I had never been, during one of our visits to the UK in the 1990s. She's of Welsh extraction and wanted to see the Welsh capital. I haven't seen Voice UK except on UA-cam; I left England as a residence in 1975.

I'm old enough to remember hearing Delilah as a teenager in the late 60s here in the UK. As I got older, and it became a disco/party/karaoke favourite, I always found it ironic that it was actually the story of a guy who committed pre-meditated murder because his girl was unfaithful to him. Well. I guess many of us guys have had that happen to us before, haven't we? But, hopefully, the majority of us didn't resort to homicide as a way of handling the situation. Talk about the power of love...no wait--that's another song, ha ha.

I love the daughters perception from the music before it even said anything about a knife in his hand She says this song is more than sad but foreboding Now I ask to your question did he hurt himself or did he hurt Delilah There's no doubt in my mind He stabbed Delilah and she left no more cuz a woman who's capable of laughing when she's caught cheating is heartless and the fact that she left no more was it because she felt bad that he heard himself or killed himself She stopped laughing because he killed her There's no doubt in my mind about that and when they came to knock down the door to arrest him He wasn't sorry that he hurt himself He was sorry that he lost control and took her out!

As has been said below, I think you have to view the lyrics in the context of this being 1960s Britain.
He was already suffering because of her and yet there she was laughing at him. He felt the knife in his hand and she laughed no more (not him crying or suffering no more). In 1960s Britain that means the obvious. He put an end to her laughing by stabbing her. The reference to 'before they come to break down the door', means he knows he will be arrested for what he's done.

considering the 1960s technology did you notice how far away he holds the microphone that shows the power and projection of his singing voice and there are all the stories of when he was headlining at Vegas the stage would be littered with ladies underwear thrown by the audience

He stabbed Delilah in a fit of rage, then waited for the police to come and break down his door.
    So be careful !
No one can belt out a song like Tom Jones.

"Romantic"?!?!?! Erm it's about a pathologically jealous guy who murders his girlfriend bc she's with someone else and dares to ridicule him. 🤣
Still a go-to for me when I sing karaoke though, it's a banger!

It’s plain to see, that you’re daughters heart is quickly melting, as she listens and looks at Tom Jones singing live. The expression on your daughters face, and her eyes glancing up and down. She is in love......That’s the magic of music, Wonderful 👍.

Got to hear "She's a Lady." It was written for Tom Jones by Paul Anka, a 50s popular singer and song writer.

Maybe you would like to see a live performance he did while judging contestants a few weeks ago for his wife on the British TV show The Voice. Very moving.
