Atlas Fallen certainly wasn't what I expected to see from Deck 13, who before this had delivered The Surge 1 and 2, and before that Lords of the Fallen. This is a very big departure from the souls-like format that we expect from them; much closer to Darksiders than anything else. I enjoyed my time with it, but I am left wondering how well all of this will come together in the final product.
Note: none of this is my gameplay. It is all provided B-roll.

Of course it’s not what I expected. I didn’t know it even existed so I expected nothing
I'm glad this is the top comment
Fr the safest route for hearing a eurojank game.
Same.
Lmao same
Same here
They showed us practically nothing about this, so this is a very welcome preview.
lol same thoughts, I even thought the game being a Monster Hunter type of game, didn expect the Darksiders direction.
Because this is all they have to show. Rest is crap
It is a shame the co-op hasn’t been highlighted.
I don't think any dev should be feel forced to make the same kind of game just because they are good at that kind of game. They should always be allowed to go and take on any kind of game that has the team's interest in making it. I am happy that they are giving a different kind of game a go.
Also they already made one of the best souls-like games ever + made a lot of innovations in that area. We don't really need *another* souls-like game, it's nice to just jump in a game and go crazy without worrying about drastic difficulty curves like tons of games are trying to implement nowadays.
That's why I am so excited for Armored Core even though i have never played a mech game. Good developers makes good games not just what they have made in the past.
Agreed I get so tired of hearing things to the effect of "but X Studio is known for (this) type of game!" That kind of mindset is a big part of the design stagnation in video gaming.
I mean of course! But some proprietary systems are built for a certain type of game. It's much more difficult to branch out if your systems don't transfer to the new project. Super commendable to see people trying out new things though!
Fr tho, i mean look at hi-fi rush, that was spectacular and that came from a mostly horror dev studio
To be honest, thank God. I'm actually missing some more of these sorts of games because almost every game in this vein lately has insisted on adding all the Soulslike stuff and I've started to want some straight up actiony titles.
Yeah, Darksiders 1 and 2 were very good at being an action games, while 3 not so much, for obvious reasons. I'm no fan of souls games and the like, cause for me they're opposite of what I'd call fun. I'm more fan of mindless slashers with fast and fluid combat, cause it's fun. But for some reason developers all over think that souls combat is be all end all, which kinda makes me scratch my head and roll my eyes. So yeah, Atlas Fallen looks promising.
I’m a fan of the Soulsborne series, but hearing a Darksiders comparison in regards to combat immediately catches my attention. Combat in those games (not as much in 3; never played Genesis) was always so incredibly fun.
exactly if you're melee purist and you think souls like is the best way to do melee combat then uhh...no. not at all. It's one way to do it sure but the charm of souls games melee to me is the slower focus on timing your attacks nature of it. Those aspects of it are what make it interesting but it's also incredibly clunky and awkward in both look and feel. Sometimes you just really want some over the top fun action like devil may cry, OG god of war etc. Souls games do not have some kind of lock on melee combat in games. IMO it's fine as it is but most people I think prefer a smooth action oriented experience.
@@TheMrDewil Same bro. Darksiders 1 and 2 is my favorite games in the series
Fuck yes. Between Soulslikes and Rogeulikes/lites I really want some more old school gameplay.
The Darksiders comparison makes me more excited. I think we got enough 'souls-likes' lately.
I hear you. Especially after Darksiders franchise went 'soulsike' itself. Damn was that a disappointment :D
Agreed
My problem with Soulslikes is that they never are 1/2 as good as the Souls games
@@carbonfibercarpet4655 true and very, very few that comes close to them and the rest are waaaaaay off the mark.
Why do so many people say darksiders 3 is like dark souls?
This looks awesome to me! I love Darsiders 1&2, so a modern spiritual successor, yes please.
But why make darksiders without the dungeons?
I hated Darksiders. Waaaay too many puzzles for me. Old school game design that I want nothing more to do with.
@@michaelvin8632well yo will love this then? From the looks of , it doesn't have those tedious puzzle
@@michaelvin8632darksiders is far from old school design. It's easy accessible game for mainstream gamer. The puzzle is also very easy but lacks variety. Just a little bit boring sometimes.
If you don’t like this game, then go and play Forspoken instead.
I can’t praise this enough! We talk about Devs working on projects they are passionate about and going out of their wheelhouse. I think Deck 13 doing something they aren’t known for is fantastic! Props to them! I stoked for this!
Facts. Forspoken and that one platinum games title that big flopped recently come to mind of wanting to strike new gold with the same old tools and methods.
They can ofc work on w/e their little hearts desire, but that doesnt mean I'll buy it, and at the end of the day they need a paycheck and I need a fun game, so its not good if the two dont overlap, which they dont seem to be coming from The Surge 2 to looking at this.
@@canniballistic555 and that is your opinion on the matter. Which is completely valid. I’m in the other boat. The surge and the surge 2 don’t appeal to me. But fast fun action game like this does. So you might not buy it, but I probably will. That’s the beauty of gaming genres and variety. It will appeal to some and not others.
@@canniballistic555 What?
@@namelessgary643 Sure, but I meant more like, what Shill Up was saying, they are known for a certain thing, they are good at that thing, why ruin a good thing?
I think its better to understand your strengths and try to have that creative fun within those more realistic confines.
Not that there arent times to break out, but this doesnt seem like its going to be one of those.
It being like Darksiders has sold me on the game. It's been so long since I've played a game like that. The first two games were awesome
TIL there was a game called “Atlas Fallen” but to hear “Its like Darksiders 2” is really all I need to know.
I really like that Deck 13 didn't just try to do the next The Surge, this time with sand. I'm a bit over Soulslikes, most of them promise more through the genre than they're able to keep gameplay-wise
Yea, probably 1 reason why they switched lanes. Theres a shitload more 'souls-likes' now than there were when Deck 13 first started putting games out.
As someone who played The Surge 1 and 2, knowing this game is developed by the same team makes it something to look forward to!
Hard does not usually equal fun to me, and this is giving me strong Kingdoms of Amalur vibes, so I'm looking forward to this more now!
the landscape looks really cool and the sand sliding mechanic looks smooth like you mentioned. Might check this out for the exploration aspect if nothing else
A Forspoken entusiast i see.
@@crooster1 no that game looked trash
Did you guys just see him slide down that gnarly dune?
@@r6scrubs126 Still you simping for this game that looks EXACTLY the same. Right down to talking armor mcguffins. Meanwhile fans of these devs wanted a Surge 3, instead we got this generic Forspoken clone. Enjoy i guess. I prsume you are hyped for Justice League and Redfall also, because they got flashy colors.
@@crooster1 bro no one cares, this is not a forspoken clone. You're a bot
The gameplay honestly reminds me of Kingdoms of Amalur more than anything else. Flashy, fun, sort of easy, but probably fun overall. Looks interesting!
I was thinking the same thing! If it’s anything like Amalur’s combat I’ll probably have fun with it.
Hopefully there's no crazy baseball guy scamming millions here too.
Glad to see some KOAR fans
I was thinking the same thing.
Same thing I thought of. As long as it allows me to do cool shit. I am good with that
Thank you for this preview, I was really curious after that initial reveal trailer and now we finally have an idea of what the game is. I love Deck13's games and am a huge fan of Darksiders, so this is right up my alley. I'm glad they are branching out and trying something different. Really looking forward to this one!
I'm don't really enjoy soulslikes but I really like Darksiders 2, so this sounds like something for me. Hopefully the game can deliver on what it is reaching for.
Also, since it's not a soulslike, it would surprise me if this game didn't come out with difficulty options. So I'm not worried about the game being too easy. We can probably choose a level of difficulty that suits us. I don't know of course. It's just how I think it will be.
I usually prefer action games to be quite easy to get into and then I can scale up the difficulty when I want to, during playthrough or on repeat playthroughs.
@@cowmath77 Same, I miss the days games weren't trying to be movies and had 15 minute walking scenes.
Just take me from point A to point B and let me just play the game without fluff.
I think you should try out The Surge 2; While its Souls influence is clear, the game really does feel more like a unique and aggressive style of action game more so than it does a Souls-like once you learn its mechanics. Just please, disable the implant that tells you the direction in which to block, because it ruins a lot of the depth found within learning enemy patterns yourself.
Atlas Fallen is more likely to be what you're looking for, however.
@@GameFuMasterthere is a way to say that without being disparaging
@@erichall090909 is there a way to read negative reviews without feeling like someone mocked your grandmother's death?
Honestly I know Skill Up is pretty mixed on this, but I think this looks ridiculously fun. I imagine you can crank the difficulty for a bigger challenge and perhaps the story and voice work could end up sullying it, but what I see I like very much. I think the game's visual identity is very unique and feels more like futuristic Dune aesthetic than we are used to seeing. The combat and mobility look really fun to execute and the small amount of side activities you mentioned looked really fun. Ill definitely be keeping an eye on this one, but 4 days after Tears of the Kingdom is a tough sell. I may not be there at launch, but provided the game isn't absolute garbage, I will eventually pick this up.
As someone who doesn’t like souls like games I’m actually pretty excited for this
The sand sliding alone is soo cool. Wish more games had interesting traversal like this
Because it's empty and full of sand, I rather games stop adding useless ass empty spaces.
I honestly like big open world checklist games. I understand why a lot of people are super sick of them but I do like them if the gameplay loop is fun so I really hope this ends up being good
Fully in the same boat. Sometimes after the typical triple AAA games it’s nice to have these open world games as “comfort games”
I love Darksiders II-it's my go-to "comfort food action game", so this is probably the best endorsement the game could get.
It's coming to GOG a few months later (September), so I'll grab it then. Ideally, any launch kinks should be worked out by then.
"uploaded 25 seconds ago" but as an ultra fan i still already watched it of course. great video skill up.
btw. "having only low to high presets would be the worst pc settings ever in a video game"
you will probably be ecstatic when i tell you that that is exactly the fifa 23 settings menu lmao. the franchise is an actual joke ( and i'm still playing it. but as a destiny player you can probably relate)
CHAD CHAD CHAD
This man is built different.
Did Senpai notice?
You had me at the Darksiders comparison, not gonna lie :) I am more curious now about this game. Sweet.
Same, I adore Darksiders 2 even though I wish we were getting Surge 3
Just like everyone else, never knew this existed until now. The marketing needs a bigger budget me thinks considering the size and effort this games seems to have put into it
Love your game previews, my gamer!
I actually didn't know it was from the creators of the Surge until I searched more about it. I have nothing against soulslike games, and I loved The Surge 2, but GOD DAMN I'm happy this is more Darksiders-ish.
Had my attention as soon as you mentioned Darksiders 2. One of my all time favourites so this game might be worth checking out
I love how when Darksiders came around people constantly compared it to things like Zelda, DMC and GoW, but now we compare games to Darksiders itself. As a big fan of Darksiders, I'm happy to see the series is now regarded as it's own thing that other games can feel like.
Well to be fair the first Darksiders game is very much like Zelda games and it was the second game that really brought the franchise into its own. I just wish 3 hadn't tried to chase the Soulslike subgenre. Genesis was rad though.
This happens because Darksiders was the first game to combine Zelda's exploration and adventure with the GoW/DMC combat system, and since then, almost no other game did that, the only one i can think of is Immortal Fenyx Rising, but it pick more from Zelda Breath of the Wild, while Darksiders pick more from the older 3D Zelda, like Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess.
So as the thirst game that did an unique thing (even if it's just combining old stuff together), it become the standard game for comparisons. Sma thing happened with metroidvania, Metroid existed for 10 years before Castlevania Symphony of the Night, and yet the genre name was born only after another game borrowed the Metroid syle of non linear exploration and interconnected world.
It looks really fun. I love Darksiders, so that is some high praise. I'm glad the studio is trying something different. Will be picking this one up. Thank you for the preview.
Im always so happy when you make a video about a game i'm interested in! You're my number 1 go to.
That crab thing slamming the ground was pretty cool and it looks good. Thanks for the preview and I'll keep it on my radar.
I fell in love with all their previous games. This looks amazing and I'll probably end up liking it.
Skill Ups that friend who gets to play with all the shiny new toys before they release and you watch him completely jealous trying to pay attention to the new shiny toy.
You mentioning darksiders makes me happy, makes me joyous in a way that waiting for darksiders 4 or whatever next is worthwhile! Till then atlas fallen
Looks like some good ol' fun. I hope this scratches the itch of all those waiting for another Darksiders title.
The Surge 1 is probably my favorite Soulslike so I'm curious how this turns out. Developers trying different things is what we need more of.
The only Souls game I like more than Surge 1 is Dark Souls 2 Scholar of the First Sin.
As soon as I heard Darksiders 2, my expectations shot through the roof.
Deck 13 has had a history of making pretty nice PC settings menus. So this must be an early build side effect. I highly doubt they would disappoint on something they’ve been praised in the past for.
Dang you pumpin those videos out. Thank you!
looks fantastic actually. those animations are so lovingly made. thats usually a sign of a great game
I’m interested enough to want to see what the reviews when it comes out are like and hopeful that it will be good.
Thank you for the preview. Was really skeptical, but now it's a must buy for me.
Been interested in this one since the announcement trailer, thanks for the detailed preview Ralph, hopefully they'll iron out these issues before release.
Wow, this just hit my list of games to look forward to.
Visually it really reminds me of Outriders which, despite its many flaws, I really had a lot of fun with. If this game is not needlessly cramped with pointless busy work, it might be great simple fun.
As long as it doesn’t suffer from empty open world syndrome.
Before I see this vid, here is a list of what I expected
-Live service
-coop
-PVE
-instances probably
-PVP probably
-RPG elements, with gear, loot and builds.
EDIT: I got at least a couple correct
Just the fact that it resembles Darksiders is win for me!
I love the Darksiders series so I'll definitely try this out!
Wow! Looks neat. Congrats to this company for surviving this long. Really didn't expect them to and thrive even in this medium's enviroment.
Love me some Darksiders-like gameplay. Will definitely check this out or at least put under my radar.
This game looks so cool. It's nice to see that some games don't need to follow the modern trope of every game feeling the same. Going backwards and doing a hack and slash seems really interesting. I'm getting a kingdoms of amalur vibes, and I'm a massive fan of that game.
Rare hearing skill up tone throughout, then figured its a hands on impression.
I hadn't even heard of this game until a friend of mine mentioned it earlier this afternoon. I briefly checked it out, but it didn't really catch my eye.
Then I watched this video, and I found out that it's being developed by the guys that made The Surge, and suddenly, I'm more interested. The Surge was great, and I'm keen to see what these guys do next.
not enough Darksiders 2 style games. I'm interested
Thanks for this video. Didn't know anything about the game but very interested in it now. I was a big Darksiders fan.
Everything I've seen of this game, which has primarily been over the past few days, looks really good. Looking forward to playing it!
In the world of video games we get now, this looks like a great, fun, refreshing game that you just play though and do your nice looking combos. Can’t wait for that
Definitely a game to watch out for
As a big Darksiders fan that was already looking forward to this. I'd say i am very psyched after this video
The sand effects look really cool, I didn't expect to see anything about this game so soon especially since the first Trailer showed CGI cutscene only so this looks interesting.
Man. I like how you almost always give us a background about the studio. I had my doubts about this, because I didn’t know it was the same people that made The Surge. In a way, I can expect this is not a scam.
Yeah, Deck 13 is a name people should have on their radar. They are very consistent with their release cycles and their quality. It's clear double A stuff but it's honest games.
Reminds me of RECORE minus the dog which is replaced by a gauntlet, if anyone here has played it. Cause they are pretty similar in terms of movement and platforming and overall theme about raising structures in the story.
This preview actually has stoked my hype for this game. I feel more interested now than I did when I thought it was just another soulslike. Sad to hear that it has so many performance issues, but it is prerelease, as you said. I hope the stunted convos are a result of work in progress or prerelease editing. I'm glad to hear the Darksiders comparison, as I feel that those games are really underrated and I really love them, even if they aren't perfect.
I was really hoping they were going to bring a lot of those awesome combat elements over from The Surge. Thanks for clarifying and talking about it.
Darksiders is heavily underrated I want a new addition to the series so badly so this will be nice to play
I loved the darksiders games back in the day, be good to see if they can nail that formula
The comparisons to Darksiders have me sold. Loved those games.
I really like the enemy design, they all look like weird antlion-like monsters, pretty cool
Super hyped about this one. I hope the PC performance gets patched up, tho.
When you said in your previous videos you are working on things which are "secret" I was hoping it is Atlas Fallen and the "NOT A SOULSLIKE" is exactly what I was hoping for from this game as I am rly tired of every single game of this type trying to get into that space...Thank you Ralph!
looking foward for this and honestly im still looking foward to this.
I absolutely love Darksiders. I have been looking forward to this and I just hope the combat feels good because Deck13's combat hasn't really felt great in the past.
Deck13's combat is sublime.
maaan, I wanna see your RE4 review
FUN FACT: the surge 2 is one of the best souls likes there is
do you need to play the first one before?
@@EGH666 not at all
@@EGH666 Hmm, I would say yes. There are enough nods to characters and story beats to the first one that I think it warrants starting with it. Not to mention, a lot of the systems in 1 are present in 2, just tighter and smoother, so playing 1 and then 2 you'll see a natural progression on a lot of the game's mechanics that makes 2 even better for you. Also they're not particularly long games so the time investment isn't that big.
@EGH666 you don't have to but there is a character from the first game that is in the second game who you wont know about unless you played the original. Other than that nothing is else stops from playing the surge 2.
I need to retry the Surge 2 because I dropped it some yrs ago. Might be time to reevaluate my first analysis
It looks so interesting gonna keep my eye out for something new!
It looks awesome, it gives me mass effect exploration vibes with that massive structure there. discovering Older advanced civilizations is my absolute jam.
I would definitely buy this over Forspoken. So far, it just looks more fun
I don't hate that it has a lot similarities to Forspoken, I like the ideas in Forspoken. If this is Forspoken in good, I'm more than happy.

This looks great. I'm very excited to play it.
Will be waiting your review on this when it comes out
Not being souls like is a big win for me, Lords of the fallen and Surge were good but way overtuned in some parts that didn't really worked out. I always thought they would be much better if they didn't make it a soulslike. Glad this one is closer to something like Darksiders, that makes me very excited
Guess you are in a minority there
I was expecting it being a game like Dauntless, but being a game reminiscent of darksider was a welcome one
This game has peaked my interest.
I'm glad the combat isn't souls like. Finally 😁
I miss these types of action/adventure games like Darksiders and the original God of War games. Glad to see the genre isn’t extinct.
Looks great. Will have to check it out
The landscapes, the setting, the weapons that materialise in the hand, the ancient warriors who betrayed humanity... it reminds me a bit of the Stormlight Archive books.
I’m interested now. Will keep an eye out for this one
Definitely gonna try it out. The surge games were really enjoyable
This was not on my radar at all until this. Now I’m kind of looking forward to it. Darksiders 2 was very much my jam, I love a good metroidvania, and I’m looking more for story than challenge.
This looks fantastic!
Love the look of this!
Loved the Surge games. Definitely gonna get this.
Great info!! Thank you very Much. Looks good to me.😎
