It seems a little more Overwatch than I'm in the mood for, but closer to what I remember than anything else. I'll absolutely try The Finals as well, also based on your recommendation
The fact that the maps are nods to other Ubisoft games made it enough for me to give this a shot when it launches. Competition in this space only makes it better for players.
Ranked Mode will be in the beta this weekend. Was confirmed before the beta launch. Regarding the netcode, this was also announced by the devs that a new netcode is ready but wasn't for the beta.
They really saved this game from PR oblivion by dropping the Tom Clancy name, skipping SBMM, and opening up gameplay to a public beta. Looks like it might be a good bit of "dumb fun" with some objective-driven tactics to keep things fresh. Still not sure how I feel about the Overwatch-meets-COD art style, but if it means we get readable environments and clean angles without too much extraneous geo, then it could all come together. I wouldn't be too quick to draw direct comparisons to COD, MW2 clearly is going for a sort of "realistic arcade/light milsim" hybrid whereas this game looks much more on the arcadey side. I'm not gonna be jumping the Modern Warfare ship for this game, but the two could coexist in their respective niches.
I think I might check this out. I don't play COD anymore, but I do find myself missing that type of game from time to time. This sounds perfect for me. Plus it's free to play!
I'm in the same boat. I played CoD a lot back in the day, but haven't had a way to play that kind of game because I don't like the direction the new CoDs have gone. I got a beta key the other day and it's been really fun to play a good twitch shooter that's not a battle royale.
This looks like the game I personally would have like to have seen CoD turn into before I stopped playing about 8/9 years ago - more focus on objectives, slightly higher time to kill, clarity of visuals and map design without becoming bland or boring. I'll certainly give it a go as it's free to play!
Been playing the closed beta for the last few days. Honestly cannot express just how incredible this game feels to play. I keep describing it to people as Black Ops 2 with Valorant specialists. I think its genuinely brilliant and besides the dodgy hit registration I will definitely be playing this for a long time to come once its released.
@@natecoet3291 i'd personally disagree. the movement speed especially is a lot faster than bo4 and the gun feel isnt as stiff as bo4. only comparison i'd make to bo4 is the specialists being similar but yh personally game feel just feels identical to old school bo2
The specialists were the worst part of the last golden age cod game besides loot boxes, Black Ops 3. There's nothing that feels worse then absolutely dominating a lobby only to die to a guy that got a 1 kill weapon that takes no skill to use...
as a video game journalist can you tell me your process on when your write, when you play and how you manage to spend your hours to really play the game, but also create a good script?
When this was announced it went in one ear and out the other. Now I'm hyped for it after seeing all the great feedback and I'm an old school cod player who has quit the game the past few years. I hope this game can gather a strong community so ubisoft keeps supporting it. I do think it will, out of the blue this game has gotten some great buzz and people are seemingly excited for it
I think ubisoft might end up selling the major characters from their games as micro transactions, like you can Sam Fisher as a spliter cell Operator or Dani Rojas as a Libertad Operator. Havent heard much about how the game will be monetized and after Breakpoint and the recent AC games im skeptical.
Yeah i find it ignorant to not assume Ubi will be selling their IP hard. Maybe the Battle Pass will offer unique Ubi IP but I guarantee you'll be paying through the nose to shoot someone as Sam Fisher with his actual Five Seven.
It's almost like you're familiar with Ubisoft or something. To be fair, CoD still sells "Classic Ghost" to people year after year. At least they do it in a contextually sensible manner, I s'pose.
I love this Game not because it’s like “COD” but because it basically has the same characters I’m use to playing from Bo3 an Bo4 but themed from the games I love playing like ghost recon. Most of the abilities are similar If not identical to bo3-bo4 (The Division ) is firebreak (Splinter Cell) is Spectre - Outrider (Far Cry 6) is I Crash (Watch_Dogs2) is Zero-Prophet and (Ghost Recons Phantoms) are Ajax.
I don’t mind the more faction based approach to the characters actually. Like, there are already hero shooters who do this, and usually idgaf whether my operator has a tragic backstory or is in love with another operator. Faction based abilities is cool too. you’re part of a team, and you feel it in the gameplay.
I agree. I actually prefer being a nameless and faceless soldier instead of some cringey annoying caricature who's quippy and Unique™. That's what it was like in the older CODs and older shooters in general, and we were better off for it.
I'm hyped for this. Wasn't at first, as you said, the initial branding was a slap in the face. But seeing these betas impresses me. It looks like a pvp shooter I can finally dig into, having not been able to stay in once since CoD Ghosts a decade ago.
the lack of named heros is kinda a breath of fresh air since absolutely everyone is doing it these days. i hope that we can have more character customization in the future like in the division, making your own splinter cell character or ghost with some more variety in kits would be fun
Always had been looking forward to this game since the moment it was announced! If anything, I felt that it was a shame that they had to drop the more "hyper"/"not serious" branding. I can definitely see this filling up the Dirty Bomb hole in my mind
I would also say I would hope they could flesh out the netcode a little more. Seems like a pretty large peakers advantage along with some wonky hit detection.
I think the people who hate skill-based matchmaking are the people that have tons of time to game every day because, idk, it's their job or something. But some people, who come home from a long day of work looking to enjoy themselves, don't like to hop in a game where there are a few scrubs like them, and a couple of hardcore fps gamers going 30-3 and making sure nobody else in the lobby has any fun. Idk, maybe that's just me.
It definitely gives me vibes of CoD from back in college. We used to have dorm tournaments with CoD4 and Modern Warfare 2. Man, GOOD times. That's legitimately the last time I played any CoD multiplayer.
What I like about this community is that we are all here because we want to play good games no matter who is making them or what they are about. It’s just refreshing to be feeling positive about a Ubisoft title
I love how every criticism of a SBMM also exists when you don’t have SBMM, it just switches who has to deal with the problem. I say stick the sweats with the sweats. People who suck wanna have fun in casual too, and that’s hard to do when when there’s two guys on the other team going 40-0 because there’s no reason whatsoever for you be matched against them other than the fact that they like dropping in to ruin your games.
That makes sense to me. I don’t play any multiplayer shooters, but I always hear people complain about SBMM n I’m like “wouldn’t u WANT to be matched up against players of similar skill? And if not, is that just cuz ur really good n wanna feel cool by destroying noobs?” Cuz I’m out of this sphere, I’ve never known people’s reasons for hating on SBMM, just knew that they hate it.
@@MisterK-YT the ONLY people who complain are people who are really good and now have to play with people at their level instead of rolling most of their games. They don’t want “casual” games, they want to specifically be matched up with players more casual than them so they run up the board.
@@xIQ188x This pretty much. These people are tools, and they wonder why this results in toxic communities and dying playerbases. Casuals aren't gonna stick around if they get destroyed 8 matches out of 10, whatever the gamemode. Destiny is especially known for this issue. PvP players there are some mad apes.
the devs have come out and stated that the net code has already been fixed in the final version. it is just not in the version we are playing. ImMarksman talked about it in his stream the other day. Love your review. really well made!
I've been playing FPS games for awhile and I did notice that the lack of any SBMM meant that most matches were often very one sided. If I went super sweaty and used the best character and loadout then I could very easily win pretty much every match. Many casual players just felt like bots to farm and the only opposition was the one or two good players randomly on the other team. Top players would end the game with 30+ kills while everyone else just got farmed like bots. I fear like many people who are used to SBMM are going to get farmed for 10 games in a row and stop playing.
SBMM is the worst thing to happen to competitive shooters in years (ever maybe). Completely discourages people from trying to improve at a game, and makes every match feel like a random crapshoot depending on what the algorithm feels like you deserve.
@@coldblowcode That doesn't make any sense. Why would matching people based on skill cause more problems than throwing noobs to the sharks every match?
Never gotten into a tom clancy game other than the division for a bit but i remember absolutely loving how the guns felt and hating the way PVP felt because of the net code. This looks similar
I love when a games accurately and precisely explain what weapon mods do, too many big games offer vague descriptions or inaccurate stat bars for weapons, gear, and their respective upgrades, this game looks pretty good. I also hope more game dev teams make games look good like this without trying to be photorealistic, making it so consoles a mid range pcs can have consistent high frame rates. I've been gaming since 2006 so anything 1440p looks amazing to me and while I'm not opposed to photorealistic 4k graphics, it's just not necessary for every game.
Im really hyped to play this on release, ready to go back to fast paced action, im glad kill streaks aren’t in it, defeats camping purpose and not having to be stopped in your tracks cause a damn chopper gunner or something is out , can always be in the fight, and also the sbmm not being in casual mode, as someone who mains pistols as a primary, it’ll be nice to not constantly be meta’d from everyone using assault rifles and sweating cause everyone assumes every match is a damn cdl tournament can actually go against regular people as well
I really like this game. I was a big CoD fan for the games before CoD Ghost, and quickly stopped playing by the time BO3 was out. I've been playing various FPS games since then, but never had a good CoD replacement. This game does a great job at copying good ideas from other games, while innovating and introducing fresh gameplay in more subtle ways. The movement feels really fun and fluid and the abilities give the game some variety and possible skill gap that's more than just aim. I also really appreciate them not making this a battle royale, that's a really hard space to break into and succeed while objective based fast paced shooters don't really have any big competition right now beyond CoD and Overwatch 2. The game ran really well and I didn't have any noticeable bugs except a bit of weird netcode stuff for high ping players. Ubisoft devs know how to program a working sound engine *cough* Apex Legends *cough* and the visuals aren't completely cluttered with dust and UI. Definitely try the game if you like games like Overwatch, Apex, or CoD and want something fresh and well made.
I really think if they can hold off on anti consumer decisions for at least half a year, this game can be big and steal the audience from cod. Activision seems to be actively trying to make their game worse recently.
True, but more than likely it'll be ruined by microtransactions on launch day, never recover, and die a premature death. Which is a shame cause it looks great and I'd be more than willing to pay full price for it as long as it doesn't have ANY microtransactions.
The only issue I have with map voting is usually the majority want the same fkn map over and over that is easiest to grind but is often the least favorite to play. I like variety and map voting often causes same map
I mean, it's not doing anything wrong but it also kinda lacks that "special sauce"... Idk between this and Heartland I guess only by trying will I stick with one... Or neither. 😅
Not expecting it, but I hope Ubisoft sees the reception to how this game is handled and make it a precedent to hold themselves to There's clearly talent in all of the studios' devs, all they need is the right direction and focus
It's such a blast, I'm glad Splinter Cell was heavily included as that hopefully means they're heavily dedicated to it's future post-remake. Also super sick that the inside of the downed plane is basically the map from Siege, just smaller.
I played the beta today from 2:30PM to 10PM. It’s so damn fun. MWII beta I only played for 1 hour and it wasn’t fun. This feels like old cod and a fun classic arcade shooter
Beta was unplayable (echo 2 error that was “fixed”) on my main Ubisoft account, and tbh when I did get to try it out on a secondary (and for some reason working) account the game was really, really okay. For a f2p it’s decent enough but the second it took any amount of effort to access I was already ready to move on. Considering how we’re seeing live service games dying as a near weekly occurrence, this one will be an uphill (and sadly) losing battle.
Looking forward to trying this out, it being F2P unlike CoD's multiplayer and also addressing a lot of the playerbase's criticisms with their latest entries is nice to see. Wonder what the footstep audio is like... Also, Modern Warfare 2 actually launched with only 12 maps and 2 of those were Ground War only so it was more like 10 maps for standard modes, so this will actually have more maps than CoD. Surprised to hear there's no TDM or free-for-all though, I guess they could add them later on like Overwatch did.
Think the only sbmm bracket that should be in any casual mode is for those that are low skilled to let them improve or if something makes it hard to improve like say a disability it still allows them to enjoy the game. As for anyone else should just be connection priority.
Just started watching, hoping you cover the hero system because I really am not a fan of ability type shooters. Oh god the kill feed loads backwards and I can't stop looking at it.
4:13 The irony of CoD starting out as a tactical shooter with S&D, Capture the Flag and Domination as the most popular game types isn't lost on me (considering it's now apparently all TDM)
Got to play a bunch of this over a chunk of the early alphas before the rebrand. This game is night and day compared to back then in terms of game feel, the feed back in the forums was all pretty unanimous and pretty much shaped this into what it is now.
I know this video was made prior to the announcement but they actually announced a ranked alpha that should be coming out sometime today 4/20 which is honestly really cool imo
Delay it just for that melee animation and corresponding lack of response from enemy character model ALONE. Also thanks for going over the video options but failing to mention if it has a decent FOV adjustment tool.
Very interested in this. I’m just concerned about not including a TDM mode. There will be a lot of kill focused solo players essentially forced into objective based coop modes. A casual TDM mode would probably improve the quality of matchmaking for coop modes. Since all the solo players will go there instead.
7:22 - I wish you'd refer to "them" (the creators) as the specific studio it's from, which would be Ubisoft San Fransisco in this case. As there are still loads of people who believe that "Ubisoft" is this singular all-encompassing studio that makes everything that is published (and decides everything that's done) by Ubisoft. - This studio is actually only behind games like "Rocksmith" and one of the South Park games, believe it or not. Many people would probably think it's from a studio behind anything "shooter" from Ubisoft. That's just not how it works.
Wait wait wait hold up people hate skill based match making in cod... people don't even understand what sbmm is it's the only reason you have balanced matches in game otherwise you get games like tarkov where you have the best of the best players going against people who are in their first match and get upset when they lose so badly they stop playing. Sbmm is necessary in all casual games to keep them balanced in a fun way
I 100 percent believe iconic characters from franchises will be in the full game. Either just in a premium shop at about £29.99 as skins themselves, or as characters with skins sold separately. I wouldn't be surprised if battlepasses are based on characters from franchises. Or even go the Avengers route and have battlepasses for each major character to unlock their specific skins etc.
Look, I love when devs can flip the narrative on the initial reception their game got and this is great to hear...but really I just want more info on the new Splinter Cell.
I haven't played Call of Duty for about five years because it became a casino rather than a game, but it had a hardcore mode to make playing more engaging with the risk of accidental team-killing. There was no minimap, a wall-hack in a different form. It took fewer bullets to kill, rather than having to empty your gun into an enemy before they even flinched. If this game has the options of no minimap, less time-to-kill and the danger of team-kills, it might be worth some time playing. Ideally, it would also have limited guff: minimal weapon customisation, no avatar customisation and no character background or development. All weapon attachments would be available to everyone from the start without having to unlock them, so that players wouldn't have to grind and could simply get into the game and play against others who don't have access to better equipment.

It'd be cool to get some Assassin's Creed inspired stuff, like a map set on a tropical island with a shipwreck or Abstergo headquarters.
Huge agree, there have been numerous closed invite betas for various parts of the game before this and the feedback loop has been transparent and awesome. Looking forward to its release.
Reminds me of Dirty Bomb with the classes, gunplay, and objective based game modes.
Shit, I remember Dirty Bomb! Been playing Shatterline on PC and that game gives me the same vibe.
Miss that game 😢
Rip Dirty Bomb.
That "Rule 34 slip", gave me a giggle there for a sec. Love it Ralph. Great review, and video as always. Adding this to all your videos on my playlist, as I love revisiting all your videos while playing games, working, basically anything that gives me a chance to just chill with your take on what these games are bringing to the table. Looking forward to the next video.
Man this game has a lot of potential to be Ubi's next big thing. I hope the iron out the details and hit it big, because I am for sure looking forward to this.
You can rest assured with the amount of money on the line they will be releasing their best possible game.
@@kylerobinson6102 eh idk looking at ubisoft’s track record, it isn’t good but at least this looks promising and there’s some sort of effort put into it
@@kylerobinson6102 you made a decent point and then immediately made yourself look stupid by bringing up a completely unrelated non-issue like its an annoyance we can all relate to.
Wow, that shooting looks pretty satisfying just from your footage. It's been quite a while since I did any online PvP shooting, and this is getting me back in that mood. It seems a little more Overwatch than I'm in the mood for, but closer to what I remember than anything else.
I'll absolutely try The Finals as well, also based on your recommendation
The finals definitely gonna be the best pvp fps of the year
It unfortunately isn't
The fact that the maps are nods to other Ubisoft games made it enough for me to give this a shot when it launches. Competition in this space only makes it better for players.
Ranked Mode will be in the beta this weekend. Was confirmed before the beta launch. Regarding the netcode, this was also announced by the devs that a new netcode is ready but wasn't for the beta.
Ranked with shitty netcode is one hell of a bold decision...
@@AnimosityIncarnate yeah but it is a beta so don't take it too serious regarding your rank. It is meant to test the MMR system for Ranked.
The crashed 747 is a Division 2 map from Heartland
I love the communication by Mark Rubin regarding the game.
You can see Skill Up is logged in as "CEO Andrew Wilson" when he's looking at the settings 💀😂
I am actually really excited for this one. Never thought that would happen for a ubisoft game.
Black ops 2???? I’m sold
More like black ops 4 than black ops 2. Or just feels like Ghost.
I do think it will, out of the blue this game has gotten some great buzz and people are seemingly excited for it
Yessss!! I was just wondering where your reaction was to this on the weekly vid, loving this game as well!!
Most of the abilities are similar If not identical to bo3-bo4 (The Division ) is firebreak (Splinter Cell) is Spectre - Outrider (Far Cry 6) is I
Crash (Watch_Dogs2) is Zero-Prophet and (Ghost Recons Phantoms) are Ajax.
That's what it was like in the older CODs and older shooters in general, and we were better off for it.
i'm sure ubisoft will add a 30 dollar sam fisher skin so people can play it as a "hero" shooter anyway
Man, it's a trip to see Attica Heights. Old Phantoms map. Never thought I'd see this map again.
Throwback.
I actually really like the look of the gunplay and map design, reminds me a lot of Black Ops 2.
Git gud
I can't wait to play this game, feels like the Spiritual Successor to Black Ops 3 we were always looking for.
It does
It definitely gives me vibes of CoD from back in college. We used to have dorm tournaments with CoD4 and Modern Warfare 2. Man, GOOD times. That's legitimately the last time I played any CoD multiplayer.
Ubisoft never learn, Ubisoft still not adding their newest games on Steam!
Good
Make a mod for that bish
Are the songs played troughout the video directly pulled from the game ? If yes, then I'm enjoying what I'm hearing.
What I like about this community is that we are all here because we want to play good games no matter who is making them or what they are about. It’s just refreshing to be feeling positive about a Ubisoft title
Thanks for talking about this game! Definitely on my radar now that the rebranding and gameplay looks a lot better.
And if not, is that just cuz ur really good n wanna feel cool by destroying noobs?”
Cuz I’m out of this sphere, I’ve never known people’s reasons for hating on SBMM, just knew that they hate it.
@@arthurdent9281 watch the vid Skill up explains what sbmm has done to shooters like cod or destiny. Makes perfect sense.
@@HappyRagingMatt Yeah, he said it's too hard. He wants to play on easy mode and kill a bunch of noobs.
Never gotten into a tom clancy game other than the division for a bit but i remember absolutely loving how the guns felt and hating the way PVP felt because of the net code. This looks similar
Honestly looks like a semi competent CoD rival, similar to what Battlefield used to be, and I think that's great.
Ah yes... Back when battlefield had 3 lane maps 🤦
what makes it "semi" competent though?
I love when a games accurately and precisely explain what weapon mods do, too many big games offer vague descriptions or inaccurate stat bars for weapons, gear, and their respective upgrades, this game looks pretty good. I also hope more game dev teams make games look good like this without trying to be photorealistic, making it so consoles a mid range pcs can have consistent high frame rates. I've been gaming since 2006 so anything 1440p looks amazing to me and while I'm not opposed to photorealistic 4k graphics, it's just not necessary for every game.
Im really hyped to play this on release, ready to go back to fast paced action, im glad kill streaks aren’t in it, defeats camping purpose and not having to be stopped in your tracks cause a damn chopper gunner or something is out , can always be in the fight, and also the sbmm not being in casual mode, as someone who mains pistols as a primary, it’ll be nice to not constantly be meta’d from everyone using assault rifles and sweating cause everyone assumes every match is a damn cdl tournament can actually go against regular people as well
The Current FPS Industry is so bad
that some midtier ubisoft shotter is getting insane hype
its actually sad
Love that your Ubisoft name is CEOAndrewWilson, that got a chuckle outta me
I really like this game.
We of course had to have the destiny comparison
I really think if they can hold off on anti consumer decisions for at least half a year, this game can be big and steal the audience from cod. Activision seems to be actively trying to make their game worse recently.
They gotta hold off for the entire life cycle of the game.
@@majormom357 yeah but that literally will not happen. Half a year is prob still pushing it for these greedy rats.
True, but more than likely it'll be ruined by microtransactions on launch day, never recover, and die a premature death. Which is a shame cause it looks great and I'd be more than willing to pay full price for it as long as it doesn't have ANY microtransactions.
I'm not sure if anyone has commented this, but the characters do have backstories if you go to the character select menu.
Or neither. 😅
Not expecting it, but I hope Ubisoft sees the reception to how this game is handled and make it a precedent to hold themselves to
There's clearly talent in all of the studios' devs, all they need is the right direction and focus
I’ve been waiting SOOOO LONG for Brink 2 so happy it’s getting good impressions
It's such a blast, I'm glad Splinter Cell was heavily included as that hopefully means they're heavily dedicated to it's future post-remake.
Also super sick that the inside of the downed plane is basically the map from Siege, just smaller.
I really love that they even put in some maps from ghost recon phantoms
I played the beta today from 2:30PM to 10PM. It’s so damn fun. MWII beta I only played for 1 hour and it wasn’t fun. This feels like old cod and a fun classic arcade shooter
Beta was unplayable (echo 2 error that was “fixed”) on my main Ubisoft account, and tbh when I did get to try it out on a secondary (and for some reason working) account the game was really, really okay. For a f2p it’s decent enough but the second it took any amount of effort to access I was already ready to move on. Considering how we’re seeing live service games dying as a near weekly occurrence, this one will be an uphill (and sadly) losing battle.
very excited for this i hope it launches soon
Looking forward to trying this out, it being F2P unlike CoD's multiplayer and also addressing a lot of the playerbase's criticisms with their latest entries is nice to see. Wonder what the footstep audio is like...
Also, Modern Warfare 2 actually launched with only 12 maps and 2 of those were Ground War only so it was more like 10 maps for standard modes, so this will actually have more maps than CoD.
Surprised to hear there's no TDM or free-for-all though, I guess they could add them later on like Overwatch did.
I’m hoping this game does well because call of duty DESPERATELY needs competition
Found out about this last night, just when I wanted to know more, here you are. Ralph your timing is impeccable
Ralph’s gamer tag being “CEOAndrewWilson” had me giggling hahahah
4:13 The irony of CoD starting out as a tactical shooter with S&D, Capture the Flag and Domination as the most popular game types isn't lost on me (considering it's now apparently all TDM)
really hope this takes off, the game looks amazing in like every technical way
Got to play a bunch of this over a chunk of the early alphas before the rebrand.
First person I've ever heard mention "Roller Champions". That's a great one that barely was marketed.
It looks inspired by Dirty Bomb, with gameplay somewhere between that and Call of Duty. I'm intrigued to see if Ubisoft can pull it off.
Very interested in this. I’m just concerned about not including a TDM mode. There will be a lot of kill focused solo players essentially forced into objective based coop modes. A casual TDM mode would probably improve the quality of matchmaking for coop modes. Since all the solo players will go there instead.
I'm so glad to see your video in 4K60, much needed upgrade!
Then let's hope it will be on Steam. Most people won't use the UbisoftLauncher just to play the shooter of the week
Bro, I needed to know your opinion because the only games I played that were Ubisoft the ones that you recommended man it’s pretty damn good actually.
You know, I've been thinking about your channel quite a bit lately, Ralph. Hearing you mention your start with The Division takes me back to tuning in here for your weekly resets and gear set reviews. It's so awesome to see that you've managed to break out of your original gaming niche of Division. So often, I see gaming UA-camrs struggle with diversifying their content away from just 1 game. Often it leads to channels falling off. You've done an excellent job over the years. You've grown in your presentation and script writing, and you do an excellent job at sharing your opinions in a sincere way. I really appreciate the labor and work you put into the channel (along with Austin and anyone else involved). It shows that you care about what you do, and we are all grateful for it. Keep it up, man🤙🏻
Well said.
SBMM has more or less made me stop playing PVP games when that was all I played back in the early cod days. Very excited for this game.
The fact that you set your username to CEOAndrewWilson is impeccably funny
I hope over time with iterations and maybe some crazy 5 hour single player campaign added, this eventually takes over the COD market
I wish they implemented learning, given how siege gunplay is so satisfying because of that mechanic.
Something i love so fsr about the game is the maps. They are so beautiful and theres so much to look at i cant wait to start playing!!
