I feel the issue with this game is very similar to a lot of current games. They spent a good amount of time and effort on parts like combat and lore but then when it came to making sure everything worked well together, they couldn't do it. And most of the time it's due to either budget issues or release deadlines set by upper management, if not both.

Maybe after a patch or two addressing the lock in and camera jank -- yeah, I can honestly see myself picking this up. Not full price, doesn't overstay its welcome, and has a Kingdom of Amalur feel to it.
In short, this is a well made game, showing fancy effects, in a heavy medieval fantastic ambiance, with an accent on melee combat and dynamic displacement againt impressive creatures. Wishing you a good time if you play it ! ☺
Nope a well made game has both good story and combat. Or really good combat to make up for the bad story or the other way around. This doesn't even have either compared to plenty of great games. After playing way better games playing something like this is just terribly boring
@@manwithballsonarm6775Eh idk unless you’re playing a JRPG I think story can very easily be tossed aside. If the art style and gameplay looks cool that is usually all someone needs to enjoy. It is a game first, after all. If people wanted to enjoy an in-depth story they would go read a book.
This and Forspoken always felt like PS5 launch titles similar to Godfall. They have their gimmick and large spectacle. Fun but shallow. Not that thats a terrible thing and works well enough for some.
Godfall was such a failure. Really regretted that pre order. They did a lot of good updates, but it was never worth going back to after one play through.
I love it. No issues. It does feel old hack and slashy but I had a blast. Think the review is a bit harsh, especially from a group that just hammers out games on repeat for work. Most people will enjoy it I think
My only complaint about this game is that I wish there were more super human enemies. From all the videos I see of the combat, it looks like you mostly fight monsters and beasts. I always like fighting a good variety of enemies in games so a mix of humans and beasts would've been cool. It still looks decent though and I'll probably get it on sale or maybe when it hits Game Pass hopefully.
I'm so glad I watched this, I watched some other videos that made me almost buy this game with the $120 price tag. This opened my eyes a lot to what this game is actually like, I would still love to try it out but not for that price, I'm gonna wait till it's on sale, hopefully by then they have added and fixed some stuff. Thank you for this video!
Jake dropped the ball on this one, I hesitated to play this on Game Pass but it's way better than he implies. Sure, the criticism about the bugs & glitches are valid, but the fun factor, unique designs of certain characters and the mechanics being relatively easy to learn were what impressed me and kept me playing it.
Thanks to GamePass I started playing this game and only been playing co op. For the game itself I agree with all the comments of it having fun combat and movement with good abilities/upgrades. It has some flaws with enemy types and an uninteresting/confusing story. It is a test to how good the good stuff is because personally I need a good story to make me want to continue to play and the story is forgettable but still want to play it. In terms of Co OP i actually think this is the best feature that every game should follow how it works. In game you both get the full amount of resources regardless who picks it up, you can be on opposite sides of the map and open a chest and the other player will receive the reward. I did not experience any lag co op and the save system is GREAT! Let me explain, if you play with a friend you have your character and you eventually leave you can choose to save just your character (so you keep all the resources and upgrades you received during that session), you can save the world progress (so if you got further in the story co op than in your own solo it will progress your story so you don't have to replay what you just played on your solo playthrough), you can choose to save both world AND character, or you can choose not to save anything. This is so underrated for co op games and don't understand why bigger games don't get how useful this is. I actually played the game with 1 friend got about 3 hours in and with another friend restarted the game and with the same character and it scaled down my character so I wouldn't be too OP and 1 shotting the enemies during the new playthrough. When I left that playthrough i saved my character and not my world as i didn't get as far in my previous playthrough. I cant stress how much i appreciate this feature playing CoOP.
Was a fair enough review, the price is lower than a full price, so its an AA rather than an AAA - but who knows what wonderful patches this very very small team of devs will pull out of the hat.
Being a big souls like fan I bought it deck 13 has had some really good hits I was hoping the bosses would have more spectacle to them coming from a primarily souls like dev team but combat is still good. I wasn’t foolish enough to think the story would be anything to write home about hoping the lords of the fallen is as good as it looks.
Id love to see an updated Before You Buy for the Reign of Sand update. I didn't play it at launch, but with the update I'm loving it (although the camera/lock on/weapon reach issue can still be infuriating).
damn we're past the era of "hope they fix it with DLC" and now have just given up to the point of "well hopefully the sequel is better"--the game JUST CAME OUT!!! lol they should have made this game better
So I pre-ordered this. Played it a little bit so far. I'm having fun. Favorite part is gliding around on the sand and looking at the detail in the world but I agree with you on the whole gets difficult when a bunch of enemies spawn around a boss and trying to pick which target to hit on. It probably is more fun with a friend but I'm a bit of a lone wolf myself too as it's hard to get into sessions for extended time periods while caring for my son. This game reminds me a lot of Darksiders...anyone else get that vibe or is it just me?
This game may not be perfect to you Jake, but you gotta admit the sand effects and animations are damn well done. I feel like Id be happy to play through this eveb if it was strictly just a graphics showcase but seems the story could be set up to surprise alot of us. Lets hope 😂 anyways Ill probably be trying this out if its on steam
What older games like the classic God of War entries, Devil May Cry games, Dante's Inferno, Darksiders, Prototype (both of 'em), and so much more have that Atlas Fallen, Godfall, Forspoken, and all the other generic titles don't seem to even come close to is a particularly gripping art style and vibe/atmosphere to the point where these older gems even made it a point to apply those ideas into the HUD/UI. A lot of modern games lately, even the newer God of War games, lack that. Unique HUD/UI and the weight of good atmosphere seems to be something almost entirely lost to time at this point with AAA titles.
This reminds me of remnant in the sense that no one really knew about remnant from the ashes if you were lucky enough to find it on day of release you had the feel of finding a diamond in the rough. The story wasn't all that interesting the characters were so scattered you probably didn't even encounter the ones you meet in the sequel and the combat was fun but the game had its buggy moments and for me remnant from the ashes was so great that I lost it when remnant 2 was announced so when I hear so so story kinda buggy great combat I think back on remnant and hope that by giving this a fair shot we might get Atlas fallen 2 the re-rising And it'll be something to look forward to If we show support for a new ip maybe we can start encouraging more creativity and not have to play skyrim the ultra super mega hyper re-released edition for ps7
I love when Jake plays a mediocre game, but still attempts to sound chipper and optimistic about it. Its an enduring quality Jake, you should be proud.
So I just started playing. I always like your take on things and so far I agree. Fun combat and forgettable story. I think I will enjoy this game for what it is but be warned to others reading this. I didn't completely hate Forespoken either. I guess I am perhaps to forgiving with games, but at the same time I am glad that I can have fun with titles even if they are not amazing.
Don’t apologize for enjoying games. I’m right with. I’ve enjoyed plenty of games that get trashed by the gaming public. Games are meant to be fun for the player and if you’re having fun - mission accomplished.
"It's just... Almost there" could be Deck 13s mission statement and I don't say that in any kind of mean spirited way. I actually really love Deck 13s games and the jank is part of the charm for me. I just wonder what it is that keeps them from crossing the line into true excellence because man... They're perpetually just.. Almost there.
@@fdhfghfgrhrrth It's not even that I disagree, but what hurts is that they went through the trouble to involve one of my favorite worldbuilders ever (Todd MacFarlane), and then just shoved a generic fantasy plot into it, and tucked most of the lore away into random disconnected stones you happen across rather than actually building the world around it. Elder Scrolls does the same thing, which I take issue with. Anything interesting about the world is just slapped into books. You'll never see it for yourself, or know about any of it by talking to people, or by exploring and seeing the effects of these events for yourself. You just have to read about it. It's totally disconnected from the world.
Ya I’d suggest people wait till the price is reduced. Giving them time to patch all the bugs/glitches. I’ve already fallen through the floor a couple of times and gotten a great view inside a rock (got stuck inside a rock/walls) Well I just clipped through a boulder again (different area) and got stuck again 😅

Anything other than that is "mediocre tripe," which is absurd. People that say that every video game is trash nowadays often think like this.

Just the fact that it has Co op is a selling point for me. Sadly far too few good games implementing that these days unless it's a generic Fps.
Gamepass brought me here
Likewise.
Me three
Me4
Me too... And I have to say. I'm LOOOOOVING this game.
lol me too😂😂😂
Jake with his obligatory chuckle in the intro of every video. I love gameranx because they are consistently awesome.
*how* are they awesome? explain..
It actually annoys me he’s always chuckling for absolutely no reason
You guys are getting annoyed by a small laugh ? Wow your weird
You know how it goes by now.. he gives you some pros, some cons... of the latest games releasing
@@derekwilhelm1555you're getting mad about another person being mad that your crush has a dumb chuckle? Wow you're very weird
I feel the issue with this game is very similar to a lot of current games. They spent a good amount of time and effort on parts like combat and lore but then when it came to making sure everything worked well together, they couldn't do it. And most of the time it's due to either budget issues or release deadlines set by upper management, if not both.
@@Shawn_Raz_87notice how he said “I feel” at the beginning? This means everything after that was his opinion. And instead of taking it like that you wanted to be a snarky ass cause you liked that aspect of the game and he didn’t, simple as that.
It probably isn't great to do this, but ever since games like Horizon Forbidden West and Elden Ring I just can't justify paying the same price for any other game that isn't up to the same caliber. But I'll absolutely pick this up when it goes on sale. It looks fun as hell, and like you said a good throw back
I really feel like you guys are real gamers, the only other guys I watch are the SwitchUp guys. You guys are fantastically honest about games. ❤❤❤
You hit it on the head. This looks like what a Kingdoms of Amalour remaster would look like
I read this comment as he said this wtf
You know that already exists right?
there is a remaster - unless this is a brutal dig at the remaster in which case well played lol
@@fatrat92Not much of a remaster, more like a straight port.
is it just me or is there anyone else out there that cant get enough of this game?!
Just got this in decembers humble choice thingy with the invincible, 2 games ive been intrigued about for a while!
I’ll wait for a sale, but I have to admit: it does look fun
This and Forspoken always felt like PS5 launch titles similar to Godfall. They have their gimmick and large spectacle. Fun but shallow. Not that thats a terrible thing and works well enough for some.
Except this looks slightly better than Godfall and Forspoken
Thanks for letting me remember godfall. I hate this game
Godfall was such a failure. Really regretted that pre order. They did a lot of good updates, but it was never worth going back to after one play through.
Yea Forspoken doesn’t seem like a PS5 game but it was ok .
Godfall was great once I unlocked the suit I wanted to use.... just weird that they went from The Surge stuff to ..... This?
Feels rushed.
the world looks amazing, i hope they pump out some updates that add more to the game and make it worth
I love it. No issues. It does feel old hack and slashy but I had a blast. Think the review is a bit harsh, especially from a group that just hammers out games on repeat for work. Most people will enjoy it I think
This is the perfect game to get on sale in a year or 2 when its under $20. Not great but a decent way to spend 1 weekend.
That's exactly what I'm thinking...see you next year's black Friday type...
@@MusicmyZombieyup😂😂😂
$120????!!
@IAmLuckyMusicAlso yeah $120 in New Zealand
I bought. I am not really far into it, but so far, it is fun to play. Story is okay so far.
I still plan on buying this game! (at a huge discount of course) Looks fun!
👍🏼
Just came out on gamepass and apparently the new update services some of these "issues" so a good time to check it out peeps.
I got the game and have been enjoying it. The story is nothing special but, the combat and sandsurfing is quite fun.
I saw many positive reviews in the comments below regarding the combat and exploration, and I completely agree. It’s pretty fun and beautiful.
I have it already on PC and I don't regret. PC performance is surprisingly good and it's really fun with a friend.
👍🏼
cool
both of you got scammed bozos
Jake dropped the ball on this one, I hesitated to play this on Game Pass but it's way better than he implies. Sure, the criticism about the bugs & glitches are valid, but the fun factor, unique designs of certain characters and the mechanics being relatively easy to learn were what impressed me and kept me playing it.
Even though it looks like it has its faults, I'm still going to get this game and platinum it!
poor guy
@@PoloMoney is it that bad, or trophy list that hard?
I don't know about platinum but I am going to play it I wanna see what kind of builds I can make
why spoiling his fun?@@PoloMoney
@@bombchop he is a troll dude, i think he doesnt have the system or hardware to play this game
It's not bad, honestly.
Id love to see an updated Before You Buy for the Reign of Sand update. I didn't play it at launch, but with the update I'm loving it (although the camera/lock on/weapon reach issue can still be infuriating).
Still a fun game regardless. Hopefully a second one comes out and learns from the first one's mistakes
Why would you want another? This game is terrible. Bring back The Surge!
damn we're past the era of "hope they fix it with DLC" and now have just given up to the point of "well hopefully the sequel is better"--the game JUST CAME OUT!!! lol they should have made this game better
Why does everyone always want a sequel to fix what they can do with a simple patch. This isn't the god dam 90s
@@FlamespeedyAMV patch is letting them off too easy. They should just make good games
no, it's a terrible game . There's no need for a sequel
This game reminds me a lot of Darksiders...anyone else get that vibe or is it just me?
definitely is similar to darksiders especially the each weapon with unique combo mechanics
I’m really, really enjoying it….. what Forspoken should have been
👍🏼
This is a studio that can flourish with a bigger budget. Their games are always almost there.
I definitely will check this out while it’s on Gamepass
Another great video guys!! Definitely not a full price purchase but will add to the list.
Definitely having a blast the performance of the transition is amazing no flaws and I’m 10 hours in story dumb but the game great.
“I just wanna get to the killing!” I know that feeling when it comes to sidequests sometimes, Jake.
Loved Surge 1 and 2, and looking forward to giving this one a go (although will be secretly wishing for a Surge 3) 😅
On wishing for Surge 3, I will second the motion. Lol
Yeah... I just wish they made another Soulslike in general
Those walking animations in cutscenes are quite possibly the ultimate red herring 🫣
This reminds me of remnant in the sense that no one really knew about remnant from the ashes if you were lucky enough to find it on day of release you had the feel of finding a diamond in the rough. The story wasn't all that interesting the characters were so scattered you probably didn't even encounter the ones you meet in the sequel and the combat was fun but the game had its buggy moments and for me remnant from the ashes was so great that I lost it when remnant 2 was announced so when I hear so so story kinda buggy great combat I think back on remnant and hope that by giving this a fair shot we might get
Atlas fallen 2 the re-rising
And it'll be something to look forward to
If we show support for a new ip maybe we can start encouraging more creativity and not have to play skyrim the ultra super mega hyper re-released edition for ps7
I just bought the game for $20! It looks fun, like an old hack and slash like Kingdoms of Amalur, Fable, and Darksiders!
So its like sand prototype
I love when Jake plays a mediocre game, but still attempts to sound chipper and optimistic about it. Its an enduring quality Jake, you should be proud.
The gameplay look fun and I love the scale of this game.
Great review! I'd rather have a replayable 14-hour game rather than a 60-hour game that I get sick of toward the end.
Gonna get this on sale
Hey gameranx fam, just an idea for a video, can do some of the best and worst "before you buy" videos, love all the work the team does, all love
Getting major Kingdoms of Amalur vibes from this game, can't wait to play!
God, I hope not. KoA was top tier aggressive mediocrity.
@@ledumpsterfire6474on point comparison then
@ledumpsterfire6474 sometimes it’s fun to just hack and slash. Not every game needs to be a 10/10
This and darksiders
I’ve already fallen through the floor a couple of times and gotten a great view inside a rock (got stuck inside a rock/walls)
Well I just clipped through a boulder again (different area) and got stuck again 😅
games are allowed to just be games they don't have to be the biggest best thing ever
Fucking thank you. I miss when videogames were allowed to be mindless fun and weren't judged expecting them to be the next RDR2 or Last of Us
Very true. With that said i still dont really wanna play this
It seems nowadays a game is only considering "good" by the general public if it is a perfect unanimously beloved genre-defining never-before-seen masterpiece. Anything other than that is "mediocre tripe," which is absurd.
People that say that every video game is trash nowadays often think like this.
Going to pick this up right now after work!!!
Not too keen on the sand
It’s coarse, rough and irritating, and it gets everywhere
🙂 ...at least you will not have to worry about your midichlorian rate.
Every game doesn't have to be a masterpiece but still is fun, A reason Forespoken is gaining a cult following even if it's a bit late.
Forspoken is better than this junk!
Talking gloves are going to become a red flag for games now 😂
Managed to pick this up for $10 at GameStop, and for $10 it's not a bad game!
Been waiting for this one
I got the game gonna play it tonight. Main reason I love Darksiders and this feels close enough
I’m sick of hearing souls like
Get ready, it's only just become truly main stream with elden ring. I'm here for it.
Git gud scrub
Then delete UA-cam and stop complaining
This game isn't even soulslike, why complain?
It’s soul inspired what they mean
Agreed: the camera angles, the blandness, great combat
Looks fun as heck
It does and I'm very glad it seems that way
I'm loving the game. Graphics are amazing, combat is addicting. And the fact that it's semi-open world is fun for someone working full time and have a family to attend.
Looks like Anthem...on sand 😅
I havent stopped playing Remnant 2 since it came out😎

First .. just wanted to say how much I enjoy you videos on games. Lots of variety. Also , how the heck do you review so much.
Second.. I’m reading the new book “Doom Guy - Life in First Person” by John Romero. A great read on his beginnings and the real start of gaming. Highly recommended.
Bottom line.
Wait for it to go on sale.
1. gameranx releases a video
2. Like the video
3. Watch the video
4. Enjoy morning coffee with Jake
5. Life is gud.
Basically exactly what I expected which is why I didn't pick it up. Definitely gonna continue trusting my gut on games.
All in all, an enjoyable game.
Have to agree with Jake on the camera control issues, which is the biggest concern I'm having.
I'm having a good time with it on the xbox though.
