A reminder that the success of our military isn't about precision of a drill, but about determination to get the job done. I'd want guys like that in my command.
All 3 of those hysterical comedies for sure and I'll have to add his Christmas classic "Scrooged" ("the b*tch hit me with a toaster") with Bobcat Goldthwaite, Buster Poindexter, Carol Kane, etc. Groundhog Day was pretty funny, too.
Jack Peters I was prior USAF and retired USAR. What really resonated for me is not the D &C, itself, it's about getting a bunch of unlikely, different individuals, with different mindsets, to drop our b.s. differences to function as a unit, in addressing a critical task, a tough moment , a dire situation and realize that WE could adapt, overcome and come out the other end successful and better for it.. When that unit cohesiveness shit kicks in, there is no force that can break that bond.. People are getting wrapped around the axle about how the story in the scene, and not getting the message, the lesson. To borrow from what you wrote, this is why this scene " really resonates" for me. Hooah!
My dad was in the Army, nuclear ordinance. His favorite army movie wasn’t “7 Days in May” - although he said he could see that one happening - or “Battle of the Bulge,” or “Saving Private Ryan.” It was this one. He said so many guys were in the Army that were so stupid they should have flunked Basic because they would be a danger to everyone around them, or so dang bright they should have went into OCS…and instead they went to Vietnam. We never watched Vietnam era movies, but this one was good for dad. He always laughed watching this scene. “They’d be on KP until Gabriel blows his Trumpet, but it would be worth it.” Miss you, Dad, always. Hope you’re having a beer up there with your buddies.
One night my dad watched this after having a couple and he loved it. He was a WWII combat vet, and said anything that could laugh at the military was great.
Interesting comment. Bugs bunny i think was originally not so much for kids but all age groups . Well none of the cartoons like simpsons or Flintstones or southpark ...are really for kids. Watching bugs bunny as a child i now realise i missed heaps of references to say Liberace, Maurice Chevalier ...and heaps more that i don't know .
A few decades before "Stripes," during OCS we had to learn all the 22-5 Drill and Ceremonies Manual. So, of course, one of our guys made up a complete training performance of the nomenclature, operation and maintenance for the "M1-A1, Zippo lighter.." Complete with a period of instruction and demonstrator. I cannot believe this behavior hasn't existed in the military, forever. He went on the become an officer in the Special Forces.

knowing what i know now this is so hilariously out of step and way off but they killed it with the rifle drills...this was one of my dad's favorite movies and every time I watch it now I can still hear him giggle when he came to my basic graduation he said you guys should have done a little "razzle dazzle" I never caught on until later when we were watching this again for the 1000th time and then I giggled just like he did it was even more funny because I think he saw that I finally after all that time got his joke
As someone who went through bootcamp, this looks a whole lot more fun. Closest I got was running in formation and the D.I. "singing" some colorful phrases for us to repeat. Fantastic.
Who would have ever thought that in 2022 our entire military would fall into a heap of garbage worse than this. If you served in the military 30 years ago and if you know anybody who has recently entered the same branch as you did then you know exactly what I'm talking about.
My son's JROTC drill team performed this routine this morning, complete with the Bill Murray impersonation. It's their Colonels last year at the school and he's a huge stripes fan, so they surprised him with it. The kids had a blast and I've never seen the man smile that big before.
Having seen it in the Odeon Theatre in Winnipeg back when it first came out, seeing the extended cut was a treat almost 40 years after the first (of hundreds).
Had just completed basic training in the Air Force and was doing my school at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi Mississippi when they showed this on the base. Everybody went wild after this scene just one of those times in your life you'll never forget. I know I've watched it at least a hundred times🤣🤣
I lived at Keesler AFB in the early 80s, my father was an instructor there. I believe he taught something to do with radio or electronics, possibly both. I don't recall seeing Stripes on base but I do remember seeing First Blood.
Back when this came out I was in the middle of job, wife, kids, job . . . I thought it was a waste of my time. Now I love it. Sometimes a life can bring you to the chill side.
32 years ago I was doing AIT there at Ft Knox Kentucky. I walked around the barracks area in the film. Brings back memories. It was updated to the " Disney Barracks " when i was there.

Almost every time something really good happened to me I would almost always say one of my fav lines from this movie ‘ Gentlemen, it’s party time Italian style ! ‘
Back when ROTC was mandatory for male college students in the Philippines, I went to a university that had access to actual M1 Garands. Our honor guard battalion had a silent drill which had a motion similar to 2:20, but they held the rifle up for about 5 seconds, IIRC. And as a cadet non-com we got to fool around with the cadet non-coms of the honor guard battalion, and got to practice with them (even filling in for other cadets if they need more honor guards). Doing that "salute" even with an empty Garand for a few seconds can be tough, I tell you.
Old comment but if you look at it again - the actors are NOT using 10 lb (with sling) M-1s. Look closely and you can see that they are well detailed rubber dummy rifles like the ones used in large battle scenes. Hell of a lot easier to drill with for sure!
John Candy seems like such a kind, beautiful man! And wow is he one hell of an actor! So much talent. I really miss seeing him in movies that come out nowadays. Either way, he is a brilliant actor! 🙂

I had an NCO school to attend in Knox back around 2012. I was relieved AND disappointed these barracks were no longer around. At that point the base looked nothing like it did in the Movie. Good times.
Well it's probably safe to say your drill instructor wasn't "Blowed Up". I'm guessing of course 😅
40 years this movie is still funny and so is mr Murray's routines
We did some of that during the DNC drill in basic. It was fucking awesome. And we took first place. Sometimes you just Gotta give them what they don’t expect. Thank you drill Sergeant Knight

This is the skit that MADE this movie!! Ty for sharing
🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰 THIS will go down in history as a CLASSIC moment from one of the best comedies of the '80s!!!
This is an all time great scene. Absolutely brilliant. Training sir! Army training sir! Point made! Utterly memorable scene!
no it wasn't Army Training
it was Arrrrrrmmmmy Training Sir
Well, this type of teamwork does tend to annihilate the enemy.
If nothing else it would have them helpless rolling on the floor.
We didn't like them anyway.
A reminder that the success of our military isn't about precision of a drill, but about determination to get the job done.
I'd want guys like that in my command.
What a great cast ... I love John Larroquette's look of complete disbelief when the General selects them to work on his special project
One of Bill Murray’s funniest films.👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
This one and "What about Bob"
Or... Caddyshack!
One of my favorite all time films. You know if you let Bill Murray into the Army it's going to be a party.
✨RAZZLE DAZZLE! ✨
“THAT’S THE FACTS, JACK”!
Has me in stitches every single time! 😂🤣😂
Comedic Genius!
This movie was played on commercial TV a few years after. The shocking part was this scene was cut! And it's the best scene of the entire film!
That's I still DVD. No commercials and uncut
ya a load a nudity was cut ya ..obvious reasons
:06 John Larroquette's face when he sees them coming is priceless!
Thanks for naming JL; knew he looked familiar!

Still a classic scene...Having been in the Army, it really resonates...
True, however as you know, that would never have happened in reality. I was in the army as well. It's funny, but impossible.
@@kuhnhan of course
Hooah!
The way I’m so insanely proud of them for getting their routine down pat on their own in time for the ceremony…CONGRATS, BOYS! ♥️♥️♥️
The director, producers, marvelous screenplay writers & actors were wonderful.

I could watch this film over and over again, it never ages. Just wish it had
One night my dad watched this after having a couple and he loved it. He was a WWII combat vet, and said anything that could laugh at the military was great.
Here's to all the men and women who served in our armed forces!
Thank You For Your Service!
Happy Memorial Day 2023!
You're welcome.
Bill Murray was the Bugs Bunny of 80s comedies
Why do you think he was cast in Space Jam as himself?🤷🏻♂️
Interesting comment. Bugs bunny i think was originally not so much for kids but all age groups . Well none of the cartoons like simpsons or Flintstones or southpark ...are really for kids. Watching bugs bunny as a child i now realise i missed heaps of references to say Liberace, Maurice Chevalier ...and heaps more that i don't know .
You know, I always commented back in the day that I thought Bill Murray was more like Woody Woodpecker.
Have you ever seen Sgt Bilko?

This has to be the Best part of the Whole Movie. (“That’s A Fact Jack”) best line ! ! !
"Where's your drill sergeant?"
"BLOWN UP SIR!" classic I remember rifle drill back in my day - brilliant movie!
knowing what i know now this is so hilariously out of step and way off but they killed it with the rifle drills...this was one of my dad's favorite movies and every time I watch it now I can still hear him giggle when he came to my basic graduation he said you guys should have done a little "razzle dazzle" I never caught on until later when we were watching this again for the 1000th time and then I giggled just like he did it was even more funny because I think he saw that I finally after all that time got his joke
As someone who went through bootcamp, this looks a whole lot more fun. Closest I got was running in formation and the D.I. "singing" some colorful phrases for us to repeat. Fantastic.
One of the better military comedies on film.
Who would have ever thought that in 2022 our entire military would fall into a heap of garbage worse than this. If you served in the military 30 years ago and if you know anybody who has recently entered the same branch as you did then you know exactly what I'm talking about.
Stripes didn't need a sequel this movie is unique, I love bill Murray, kingpin, ghost busters etc this guy is one of the best
🤣😂🤣😂
Love Bill Murry doing that.😂🤣😂🤣✌
My son's JROTC drill team performed this routine this morning, complete with the Bill Murray impersonation.
1:25 "bAAAaahAARMY TRAINING SIR" cracks me up every time
Doesn't have to make sense, but you know an instant classic when you see it.
Damnit, Candy, Remis, Murray... thanks for it all. Some of the best actors/writers to ever grace the screen. I won't even call them comedic actors.
That movie was totally way out there and I would watch it
Bill Murray is without a doubt one of the greatest actors of the 80s
We British soldiers thought this was based on a true story.
Wouldn't even have been bloody surprised if it was.
Now this is America but I don't think that we are the low. Sometimes.

Similarly, that's how won the Revolutionary War you bloody lads!👍👏🇺🇸

I was commander of the drill team inJROTC and we did this at a meet and the crowd went crazy it was awesome
I sang along word for word. Love this flick.
Bill Murray made a complete mockery out of three of my favorite things: Golf, Bowling, and the United States Army.
And I love him for it!
I totally agree love 💗 for it your so right
Best on the spot choreography I've ever seen executed so well and entertainingly
Stripes is a great Reception Station of Choice, go cavalry
Back when this came out I was in the middle of job, wife, kids, job . . . I thought it was a waste of my time. Now I love it. Sometimes a life can bring you to the chill side.
What a coincidence, I'm right in the middle of no job, no wife, and no kids.
Classic Bill Murray, Harold Ramis and John Candy. Great stuff.
I remember those drill rifles. Boy do I remember those heavy-assed drill rifles.
The rigorous battle hardened Sgt. Hulka watching the incoming grenade on the tower realising what's gonna happen had me laughing so hard
Mortar round, not a grenade.
Hard not to laugh at the oh shit face.
"Alright! Any of you suckholes wanna come up here and knock me off?"
Mortar round: wish granted. 😂😂😂😂

It was for this movie and many others that I simply could not resist getting up from my table and approaching Harold Ramis at The Ivy restaurant in Beverly Hills many years ago to tell him how much his movies meant to my generation. He was nice about it and I sat back down.
A waiter then came to my table and told me never to do that again. It was still worth it.

Almost every time something really good happened to me I would almost always say one of my fav lines from this movie ‘ Gentlemen, it’s party time Italian style ! ‘
That is one of my favourite scenes ever!
This 3 minutes of film took 12 days of training and takes. Everyone earned their paychecks.
12 days of training and 2.5 kilos of cocaine.
