HOKA are killing it in 2020!!
I’d like my theme song to be Mr. Blue Sky. That song gives me shivers every time I hear it!
If I had to choose a theme song, Chariots of Fire. That song is a bop!
Oh my gosh yes!!!
Vangelis 🤘 Check his early work with Aphrodites Child eg. The four horsemen 🌞
Just wanted to say it’s been a rough and unpredictable couple of months, but your vlogs are always something that I can count on and brings me so much joy. Thank you for everything and keep up the good work!
I agree so much Joseph! I hope that my content also brings joy. Hope you are well!
• HOKA Torrent 2 ($120) from Running Warehouse: www.runningwarehouse.com/HOKA_ONE_ONE_Torrent_2/descpage-HOOT2M1.html?from=demoor
Stunning looking shoe! Can’t beat the Hoka visual
Just watched a handful of your reviews. Love your no BS commentary. Been running the Torrent 1 & 2 for three years now, in tandem with other trail runners along the way. Just bought another pair (4th pair so far). To date it’s my go to mountain runner. For context I live in Sedona and log ~25 miles/6k feet of gain a week. Super technical, sharp rock ascents mostly. Grip and stability are tier 1. Marginally better than the Speedgoat 5 (which I run from time to time). Lifespan for the Torrent is closer to 400 miles on my terrain. Lug depth is 5mm. But for only $120, it’s got to be the best package on the market - certainly for my needs. Only thing that could really make this thing any better, would be BOA. Appreciate the reviews. 🎉🤘🏼
This video prompted me to buy the Torrent 2’s….
Now MY mind is blown 🤯!
Did a 17mile on a moderate level trail (Texas) with lots of little technical rocky spots… AMAZING 🤩 THANKS for the review!
I LOVE the Torrents! I probably wouldn't want to do anything longer than 15 miles in them. I ran a pretty rocky trail race and my feet were beat up by mile 20 and I changed shoes about that time. But anything less than that, they are just so much fun. Great rubber that will stick and that light shoe just wants to fly. Great review, Seth!
FINALLY Seth you’ve tested the Torrent. What a brilliant shoe 👍🏻👍🏻👌🏻👌🏻 gréât, responsive and fast ride with phenomenal grip in the mud here in the uk. 5mm lugs helped especially on the ‘Grizzly’ race here. Definitely up a half size as a trail shoe
I just got these shoes. I love them. They are a "medium" cushion, but to be honest, with my light frame they have plenty of cushion. No foot problems. They give you such pull going up hills and confidence going down the hills. Definitely recommend!
I've done over 500 miles in my original torrents. All of those miles on really rugged White Mountains NH trails. They held up really well and the traction in all conditions, even snow, was amazing. I haven't tried the Torrent 2 but will be getting a pair soon!
Coastin' by Zion I is the first song that comes to mind. It has the positivity I'm trying to put out in the world and is the perfect mix of energizing and somehow relaxing.
Thanks for reviewing this shoe this is one i ask you about a while back i have the first one & its been a great shoe & has held up well🙌
Great review on the Torrent 2! I've been running in the first iteration and LOVED it until I ran a 50k in it. It simply did not have the cushion I needed to go above 20 miles. I felt an indication of that in training but decided to take the shoe all the way. After that race, I bought the EVO Speedgoat and have been very happy using that for longer miles. I still love the Torrent (and bought a second pair to replace my other ones), but it's reserved for shorter, faster efforts. Speedgoat all the way for long runs!
Wow, this is the first time I've managed to get a run in before the vlog goes up at 7am EST. I kinda like this haha
Early starts do feel good!
Great review again, thanks! I got the Torrent 1 and the Evo Speedgoat at the same time last year. Exactly the same weight, but the Torrent felt faster and more exciting. Initially I loved it much more. Until I ran on mountain trails and had to descend... The lockdown simply wasn’t good enough to prevent my feet from slipping forward a bit, resulting in very painful toes. The Evo Speedgoat shined here! Now, after about 400 km in the Torrent the midsole starts to feel less cushioned, reducing the comfort quite a bit. I find that pretty fast... Again: the Evo Speedgoat outperforms the Torrent here.
So long story short: I initially loved the Torrent 1, but got more mixed feelings logging more miles in it. I curious whether others have similar experiences and whether the Torrent 2 solves these ‘problems’!
Thank you! This is exactly the kind of comparison that I was looking for!!! (I find the EVO Speedgoat has a better overall upper, more form fitting, and I prefer the stretchy laces to the stiff ones of the Torrent).
I know that you are a very high performing individual, Seth, but maybe once in a while you could try cheaper shoes in the 50 to 100 dollar range. For me as a young runner, still growing a 120 dollar shoe isn't really an option
Unfortunately new model shoes come with a higher price. What you can do is look at videos from a year or so back and those shoes should now be cheaper. For example, I got a pair of New Balance Fuelcell Rebels and my wife got New Balance Beacon V2s recently and they were in that price range (I think mine were $80 and my wife's were $60). Those shoes would be better than any new model $50 to $100 shoe.
My last 3 shoes I bought were under $100. Altra Escalante 2, Nike peg 36, adidas SL20. I wait for them to be on sale and then buy
Mindzone the Hoka Torrent (1st version) are now under $100.
The original Hoka Torrent is a great shoe as week and it’s on sale for $90 on running warehouse
Had two pairs of the torrent 1, the new ones are sounding even better! Love your content!
I bought the HT2 and i've got to agree. On the face of it it's nothing special but once you get moving it's superb. We have lots of rain in the UK and sticky mud and the deep lugs cope with pretty much all conditions and give you lots of confidence. The upper does feel a little over-padded but that makes sense once you get out there in the tough stuff. A truly fantastic trail shoe and only very minor gripe is it can be a little bit noisy on the road. For context I was coming from the Nike Pegasus 26 Trail and my road shoe are the Turbo 2's/Endorphin speed 2s.
i think the difference in weight goes to show that despite minor differences the overall structure of the shoe is what matters. there’s an old piece of wisdom that circulates through running stores: if the shoe feels lighter than another, it just fits better. it’s really hard to see minor things like a few tenths of an ounce or a few millimeters can make such a big difference.
Hoka is really putting in the work these days
Looks like another good Torrent. I had two pairs of the first version; first shoe lasted 750km, all in the rough mountains of North West Wales here in UK which eat shoes for breakfast! Second pair didn't last as long for some reason. I loved the Torrent and it always felt very stable for my feet but the outsole I would not class as 'sticky', at least on damp North Walian rock! I always thought that a good upgrade to this shoe for a little extra stickiness would be a Vibram outsole, but of course that would put the cost up. However, the lug depth I find is about right, which I think was 5mm on first version.
.
From what you've said Seth, I'd say the shoe is almost identical apart from changes to the upper and those laces remain super-strong! Should add I've ran a couple of ultras in the first version and they felt fine. Looking forward to actually be able to get out running again, due to a bad ankle sprain in February which is taking a long time to heal :(
.
Cheers for the great initial review, Seth :)
>
P.S what do you reckon to the Jawz? Did they turn your feet blue? ;)
I'll wait for your update after running more miles on this shoes, Seth! I love your videos. 👏🏃🎽
That Vibram outsole bumps up the price on the EVO. This Torrent 2 is a good bang for your buck shoe.
QD: the loneliness of the long distance runner - iron maiden
Somewhere In Time has been on my running play list for months. Stranger In A Strange Land is my tune.
That is a great song, maybe I should use it in a video for my youtube channel!
QD: "The Sound of Silence" by Simon & Garfunkel. An eternal classic that speaks to me on many levels.
BTW, great editing Seth! I loved the closeups of the shoes both in studio and on the run.
I am turning into a big Hoka fan i must say. Loving my Rincons. Theme song....So Let Me Go Far by Dodgy, nice beat and the words are perfect.
QotD: "Jump" Van Halen I've been really diggin' your trail shoe reviews. Learned a lot about new offerings. Couple a HOKA's on my radar now.
“Hearts on Fire” - Rocky 4...hands down!!!
That is a great song, maybe I should use it in a video for my youtube channel! I should use it during a montage!
Thanks for the great review! I will definitely stick the Torrent 2 on my list cause it seems the perfect shoe for the hilly and sandy trails I am regularly running on.
I'm up north and I still like my shoes to breath well when it's hot!
Oh my, Seth! You are doing a Son Gokou training (with weights) on the trail! 😅
But your review is great. I'm saving up for this pair. Thanks!
Late to the party but theme song for me has to be the theme track from the start of the UTMB - Conquest of Paradise by Vangelis. Always get a boost when it plays on my run playlist.
QoD - As an Aussie it has to be INXS - 'KissThe Dirt' (Falling Down The Mountain)
For me the Hoka trail shoes have the best laces because of that bit of extra texture. How would you rank your laces (by brand) Seth?
as an Aussi (I am not) but maybe Kosciuszko - Midnight Oil is a freaking awesome song to be bombing down a trail to...
That is also a killer tune, and a good hill for a bit of a run.
T1s were amazing gonna pick these T2 up today
I’m wrapping up on my Hoka Torrents at about 450 miles. Yesterday I started my run in the Torrents and they definitely have lost the cushion. Seth’s assessment of 500 miles is fair for a lighter runner. For my next trail shoe, Im going with the Hoka Challenger ATR wide - a little more cushion with a wider fit. Song choice / i like cold beverages by G Love and Special Sauce - heading out on my run in MPLS where it will be 90 degrees today. Peace!
Theme song is "Like a Stone" by Audioslave. Depressing but nails it!
The DOORS: Break On Through.
Looking forward to the Altra Torin review; I'm thinking my next shoe, but will be using it a little more then just recovery.
Under-valued shoe, nice! Can tell you’re excited! 👊🏻
"Hearts on fire" from the movie Rocky 4. It's a single greatest training montage and training montage song of all time
That song is motivating
Totally agree!
That is a great song!!! Maybe I should use it in a video for my youtube channel during a montage!
Great Sountrack!
3:50 I'll let you know in a couple of months. And greetings from El Paso, TX 😆
My theme song (there’s so many) would have to be ‘Gonna Fly Now’ (Theme from Rocky) by Bill Conti.
Love the shirt it seems like I just saw it yesterday on Kofuzi
Like that colorway, similar colorway they have for the SG4. Got a pair of the torrent 1. Still rocking it. I agree, outsole could reach 500 miles, give or take, but i don’t know about the upper. If the upper is less breathable than the 1s, i’ll get a pair 1s on sale. Weather’s tropical from my of the globe. QD: start me up - rolling stones. Well not really a theme song; just gets me pumped up. Song of the week, if u will.
QD - Sigur Ros “Glosoli” for sure! No words just incredible music. Great question!
I would be interested to hear how you feel about the Hoka Challenger ATR 5. Couldn't find it on the Hoka playlist.
That would be a good one.
My two cents- good shoe, some stability decent cushion not much log depth, slippery in the mud (not much rock protection either), much better upper than 4s, ok lock, bit stiff ride, great for mixed surfaces and light non technical trails. Bit heavy in GTX iteration, bit stiffer than regular one but repels water well. I would use it as daily trainer, wouldn’t use it for longer trails, nor even more than 90 minutes on asphalt. Also it has Wide version.
I love mine!
@@Morfeusm I agree, not too much rock protection.
My theme song would be “ecstasy in gold” by ennio morricone. Best trail running music ever!!!
cbrattonart I love Ennio Morricone. I’m a classical professional musician and give him my stamp of approval as a great composer 👌🏼
Hey, Seth, I've been following you for some time now, yet I feel we're not all slim runners in our prime like you. How about a video for heavy runners? In my case I'm 6'1", 222lbs. I probate but not overpronate, so I see you talk about the HOKAs and I think maybe I should get something with lots of cushion like them, or maybe NB fresh foam More. Or should I aim for stability over high cushion like the NB Vongo? These are issues that are never addressed in most runner-youtubers. Can you lend us a hand? Thanks, Seth. I still love your videos nonetheless
There are some bigger runner UA-camrs. Check out @gokurunner Goku Runner
How can he give reliable informed decisions on something he has no experience in? Being a light guy himself, it seems reasonable that he makes recommendations often based on his own experience
@@JeremyBenfield thanks for the kind reply and the recommendation. Will certainly check him out
6'1, 227 lbs here. Agree!
It's funny you say this, I was just thinking this exact same thing watching one of these videos the other day. I'm 6'3 185 right now but spent well over a decade of my running years at 6'3" 220-230 and I was wondering if it would be worth starting that sort of channel. I'm glad there are some people out there doing it, and that there is interest. If I did it, it would just be for the excuse with my wife to buy even more running shoes haha.
The Torrent would be a perfect shoe if they used the same foam as the EVO Mafate 2. I love how the Torrent performs but I only get about 200 miles out of the shoe before the midsole feels completely shot. I sure do love Hoka as a brand though. SG3, SG4, and EVO SG's are my go-to shoes.
QD: Congratulations - Post Malone
Can’t wait for the 50 mile review
My theme song is Man on a Mission, by Oh The Larceny. I just love that song!
That is a great song, maybe I should use it in a video for my youtube channel!
Definitely Landslide Fleetwood Mac!
I am surprised you did not try Torrent 1, it is even slightly lighter, but some did not like the upper. T1 has been big hit, also for me. Will move to T2 soon.
Hi pal and hello, to all of you, who are so much in running. Q: Have you ever chance to compare Hoka Torrent 2 and Solomon Ultra Glide? So exited to hear any thoughts from you. Cheers!
QD: Hey Look Ma, I Made It by Panic! at the Disco or Top Of The World by Ace Hood. Thanks for checking out my Strava today!
QD: "I Don't Need Your Rocking Chair" by George Jones. I am a little older and greyer but still going strong.
Nazareth - Hair of the Dog ✊
Love my pair of Torrent 1. Prefer the more ground feel compared to the SpeedGoat. Torrent 2 is my next trail shoe
QD: Easy one... “Born to Run” (Springsteen)! 😀😀
Altra just released the Torin 4.5 plush. Same weight as the Torin 4 with a knit upper and an extra 2 mm of stack for a 28mm stack across the midsole. Might want to check it out for recovery runs.
Sharing the night together by Dr. Hook, it sounds like a song you'll play when the shit is going down.
I love the midsole on the Hoka Torrent, but the upper just can't compete with other brands. I'd love to see a softer or more stripped down upper with better ventilation marketed as a race shoe.
QD: "A Warrior's call" by Volbeat! Volbeat is a heavy metal band from Denmark. I love them and the power within their music!
Bjarne Rost what?! No Kim Larsen?
@@michaelormondrobinson nope
Exciting review!....Saucony has about a half dozen trail shoes for 2020. Are you planning on testing any of them?
Have you tried the Hoka One One Challenger 5's? Also what would be your go to for a shoe that can be used on both trails and road? I am heading to a military college next year and need a running shoes that tough enough to get through trail runs in the mountains, obstacle courses, PT in an open field and 2-5 mile time trials on the road or track.
I really want to like Hoka. There shoes are always in amazing colour ways and great to run in. But their durability is what let’s them down. I had a pair of Speedgoat 4s and after the first 10k the plastic upper protection was bubbling and warping already. I also had a pair of Clifton 6s and the Eva outsole just fell apart after 50k. If they can sort their durability issues they’ll be 100x better off!
I haven't had the same issue. I put 500 miles on my first pair of Clifton 6 and have 200 on my second pair. I still have my first pair for gym shoes and they look great. I have the speedboat Evo with about 250 miles on them and they also still are in great shape. Not sure what happened to yours but I'm sure there are some bad batches.
If I had to choose a theme song... it normally switches as I run with music often; but probably I'm Still Standing by Elton John.
So glad you did this, I’ve had my eye on these and I think I’m gonna go for it :)
Would you think these would be okay for a 50k? Or still go speedgoat?
Unless you prefer ground contact over comfort and want to save some money, I don't see how you can benefit from the Torrent. The Evo Speedgoat have better cushioning, traction and longer lasting materials. When I'm 50+K on the trails carrying nutrition, water, etc., that small difference in weight is negligible, but the comfort on my feet (both in trail AND road) and the endurance of the shoes are worth the extra $.
yep the Torrent is a great great shoe .. loved the first version will definitely get v2
Seth the Torin 4.5 Plush is the same weight at the standard Torin 4.0 .. if you want a really cushy ride for those cruisy days ... grab a pair for comparison - just sayin'
QOD: i like to listen to Vangelis when i'm working out. Love to song Hymn for example. Right now i'm kind of addicted to a song called Vanishers from the band Katatonia.
That is a great song, maybe I should use it in a video for my youtube channel! I like Chariots of Fire!!
Altra Torin 4!! My favorite shoe for the last couple of years. On my second pair. Great all-around neutral shoe. Excited to hear your thoughts.
QD: easy answer! Danger Zone, from Top Gun!!😂😎
QD: Difficult question because I am a music freak, but somehow The Lumineer's song Scotland stuck after watching Anton Krupickas short documentary "The Runner In Winter". GREETINGS FROM SALZBURG/AUSTRIA!!!
QD. “Man in Motion” St. Elmo’s Fire by John Parr.
That is a great song, maybe I should use it in a video for my youtube channel!
Great review! What are the lugs made out of on the EVO vs Torrent 2? My guess is that the lugs are potentially combined rubber and foam which will deteriorate in time vs all rubber on heavier lug on other shoes. *hypothesis*
Love the Torrent 1... Except that small rocks can REALLY
stab your foot through the gaps in the hard rubber, where there are no lugs. Has this been addressed in Torrent 2?
500 miles on a Hoka ? No sir ! All my Hokas ( Clifton, Arahi, Gaviota, Speed instinct, Speedgoat, Torrent ) look brand new when retired because that EVA midsole compresses so damn fast and turns to concrete after 200 miles ! I'm all about TPU nowadays
Amazing shoe
QD: my wife always says my theme song is “Won’t back Down” from Tom Petty because she claims I’m stubborn 😬
The only “Theme song” I’ve ever used in my running was “Running Down a Dream” by Tom Petty
I have a wide foot, and that reenforced inlay at edge of foot is a big problem. Its to stiff and hard. It was in the Hoka Challenger ATR 5, and I can't use them anymore. Irritates the edge of side of foot and fifth metatarsal. Should have used the money on a normal road Hoka. 😥
I love the shirt you are wearing? Where can I purchase one? What do you think about the Brooks Cascadia?
What’s the major difference/s between Torrent1 & Torrent2? Love your Vlog 😁👍
Hello. Where do I get that awesome shirt?!?!?!?!?
Thanks for the video. If you had to recommend one trail running shoe model mostly for hiking, which one would you pick? I detest hiking boots so I'm looking for a lightweight trail shoe which is comfortable for walking long distances. Not for snow or icey conditions. A massive plus would be if its reasonably water resistant, and if it dries up fast after getting wet. Cheers.
This question is unrelated to the question of the day, but do you know if Hoka plans to release a second edition of the popular JAWZ that you've been liking? Thank you!
I have not heard, will try to find out
@@SethJamesDeMoor thanks for checking on that! Looking forward to hearing what you find out.
feeble ilg is in love with my Torrents! QD: Rocky! head bowed,
Great video, great shoe, but where the hell is the Hoka Mafate Evo 3 for my longer runs?
My theme song is"Amazing Grace" all different versions!
QOD: Beautiful Day by U2. It's my go to song and keeps me going. My second song would probably be Eye of the Tiger. Does anybody have any good podcasts?
That is a great song, maybe I should use it in a video for my youtube channel!!! Beautiful day for a run!
QD: Blue Sky Mine by Midnight Oil
My Theme Song would be On The Fray by From Ashes Rise.
The torrent needs a matrix upper
That would be nice
Where's the update on the Torrent 2 :)
Can we see a review of the Adizero RC 2.0?
Yes please! I am looking forward to the release of the Adizero Pro, I can't wait to run in those for my UA-cam channel!
Eye of the tiger! :-D
These eyes- by the Guess Who
QD: running wise definitely Mr motivator by idles but just normally probably something by arctic monkeys or sticky fingers not sure what tho
I had to google this - good tempo for a run :-)
