Bought my first speedgoats for the first time not long ago and they have become my all time favorite running shoe. I use them on all surfaces (even concrete tho I try to stay on the dirt even if it’s paved) and they are just sooooo good. Feels like the one shoe to do it all. I can’t wait for the 5 to come out I will be finger on the trigger for those.

It's a Hoka, "if you have a wide foot the toebox may not work for you" is an understatement! If you have a normal foot, the toebox may not work for you!
Quick note to all the SG fans out there: it will be available in wide sizing

@@thegoods9317 you may not need a wide with these. The SG4’s and Challengers were too narrow for me, but with the stretchy vamp and stretchier upper the SG5’s actually fit me really well
As someone who's put in close to 3000 miles across 8 pairs of the EVO, I find myself cautiously excited by the Speedgoat 5. I've been in the market for a replacement shoe ever since I found out the EVO was discontinued, and I LOVE the Ultra Glide, but something about the EVO just makes it disappear on my foot and it becomes an extension of my body. Haven't found that with any other shoe, and I'm hoping I'll find that with the 5. I'll probably pick up 3 or 4 pairs when it drops so I can be sure to stock up for my spring/summer 100 milers.
I feel exactly the same 100% but im not going to buy the 5. My prediction is that the 5 will not hold a candle to the Evo and I will be disappointed. I'm considering switching to The North Face as they have a shoe that seems like it would give you a feeling like the Evo. Hoka in my opinion made big mistake and should bring back the Evo. Then I would buy several pairs.
I feel the same. I’d love to see the SG5 vs EVO. I tried the SG4 but HATED the tongue… it drew blood after just 8 miles. Looks like the 5 is better but I’d love to know if it’s more padded.

Surprised to see a 7/10 for the midsole after you were raving about it! I believe you always say a 7.5 is considered a “standard score.” So a sub-standard midsole? Sounds like an awesome trail shoe
I think the absolute maximum midsole score for Hoka is 7/10. Love Hokas but their foam has never been anything to write home about.

Love Seth but he’s all over the place. I never take his review numbers too seriously and go more on his enthusiasm and words because he hasn’t seemed to figure out how to properly quantify what he likes yet consistently

Especially when you highly praise shoes, for example, for their comfort, and they only get an 8.25 or 8.5! Speedgoat 4 is my all time favorite shoe. 800+ miles on the first pair I purchased. I hope to get the 5’s day 1! Great review as always Seth!
Love the fact that it’s progressing lighter than the 4. I’ve never had a problem with the weight of the Speedgoat 3 or the Speedgoat 4, so any weight reduction is just pure bonus. Never had issues with pavement to trail transition with the outsole. The longevity prediction is definitely conservative, my Speedgoat 3 was retired from running at 875 km and continued as a hiking shoe until the lugs wore down to 1123km. Currently my 4s have 339 kms of running. My favourite trail shoe continues to impress!
How is the fit on the 4? True to size?
@@hustle3011 yes, true to size. The Speedgoat 3 was more snug. So the 4 has a wider toe-box. I am assuming the 5 would be in between.
QD: I am a pretty simple guy and just love Mexican food. Give me some grilled chicken and grilled vegetables with some tortillas, tortilla chips, salsa, and guacamole and I am a happy man!
Also, so excited about the speed go 5 and can't wait to pick up a pair or two. Rather than an EVO comparison, I'd rather see an ultra glide comparison or something similar since there is really no way to pick up an Evo at this point. The ultra glide was too soft for me in the Rocky technical trails of Arizona, but the speedgoat has been my go-to along with the peregrine lineup due to the Rock plate.
Omg I train with my Rincon and Clifton currently and been debating about doing my first 50k race. This video is kind of motivating. Great video.

Thanks for the review! As a huge fan of the now extinct Hoka Evo Speedgoat I am waiting for this one. I hike not run (due to age, and muscular skeletal issues) in these shoes and it is also great for folks like me. Would also love a review for the new Altra Mont Blanc.

I don't know about rockies but I'm using Speedgoat3 at relatively soft trails and after +800miles see them still going strong.
QOD: I could go on with this list,but I’ll just keep it to my all time favorite combo since I was a kid and say the feast would be a simple selection of Pizza and Wings!!! Wash it all down with a frosty beverage of course 🤘🏻👍🏻

We have to do something about this scoring system. I’m interested to see the comparison between Evo and 5 as the Evo is OP on trails.
I think you should look at how you rate shoes. If this one is so great and will sell out so quickly, how could it not be in the 8s?
I really think midsole should be a weighted score. Energy return in my opinion is most important.

the Speedgoat 4 is incredible and WANTS to be off-road. I have used it as a commuter shoe from pavement to trails before and feels good on pavement. BUT as soon as I hit the trail, the shoe turns into a monster. Perfect grip, perfect support and cushion.
Would love a SG5 vs EVO also maybe even more important SG5 vs UltraGlide

I didn’t like the Speedgoat 4 so I returned it to REI. It was just too clunky and stiff. Looking forward to hopefully trying this version which looks like a trail version of the Mach 4

Speedgoat 4 has been my main for the past year, the only things I wanted were a wider toe box and more heel to toe drop. I can not wait to get these on feet.

Have the EVO. I have to say, I’ve been a little stingy with the miles, using other shoes in my rotation. Only so I can keep them for as long as possible. I love them.
Released in the U.S. last night at midnight, I ordered a pair of outer space/bluing and got a notice they were shipped and will be here Tuesday… You were right sizes 8.5-11.5 in blue coral/evening primrose are already sold out and sizes 8.5 and 10 in outer space/bluing are back ordered until may 31 just in 24 hours after going on sale… Wow, glad I happened to look at the website at 12:02 am last night lol…. 🎅🏻🏴☠️🏔
There are just so many marketing gimmicks on Hoka Speedgoat 5. All the comfort and weight saving are actually on the insole and laces rather than their proclaimed midsole and upper.
Swapping out its parts made me realise that the shoe feel so much like its pre-ancestor 🙃
Hey Seth - thanks for continuing to provide the best running shoe reviews on the Internet! One detail that'd be valuable to include (maybe on the Quick Specs summary?!) is the country of origin. This is important for many of us in our purchasing decisions, only buying products made in countries with fair labour practices and ethical sourcing. Keep up the great content!

I think Walmsley raced in the Evo Speedgoat still but he was running in South Africa a lot in the Speedgoat 5 prior to race day.

Love the EVOs, if they ever wear out with my minimal trail use I’ll probably go for the SG5’s. I just use the EVOs for everything, racing-training whatever.
Been a subscriber for a while. Took a break from running stuff so been gone the past few months…missed the most recent training saga so will have some catching up to do! But I’m back!
Doing some research for my next shoe. Been running in the SG4 so learning about the 5. Had some issues with the narrow toe box rubbing and giving blisters on my left baby toe. Ended up cutting the shoe during my ultra for some pressure relief.
People seem to be confused on the scoring system. I wonder if it had to do with how we generally score things today. Most places ask for a 5 star rating (equivalent to a 10 point in your system). 5 stars means everything went well and you had a great experience.
Statistically speaking, most things should never get a 5 star. Most things are average, or equivalent to a 2.5 star rating (or 5star in a 10 point scale, or a 7 point in yours- as you’ve admitted it’s skewed up a bit in your case). Scoring this shoe as slightly above a 7 means it’s better than average. Giving something a 9 or a 10 would mean the shoe is equivalent to Hermes flying sandals 😂.
Maybe your scoring systems could have some labels attached for clarification? I imagine it’s difficult to develop this system, but I’ve seen consistency in your scoring system over the past few months, so congrats on that.

I wasn’t going to get a pair because of all the hatred I had the the speed goat 4 so I rolled the dice and got the 5 and went a half size up and I’m really enjoying the 5 👍👍

As far as when these are actually coming, they have given us estimates at the store I work at but they have canceled them off all our future orders till April or May. Production is way down on all shoes because of supply chain issues and Vietnam factories not operating anywhere near 100%.

I work in a running store in Australia and we couldn’t get any stock in the speedgoat 4 because Hoka were always sold out. Hoka need to realise how much of a hit the speedgoat is and up the production rate.
Damn that sucks. In the states it's probably the most easily purchased trail shoe I know of, maybe aside from brooks cascadia
Personally I would suggest people in the UK go a size up or at least half a size up, as they always seem to get our sizing wrong compared to the US
I feel that what Seth mentions about the little toe side of the shoe is a bit of a Speedgoat trait - I have some of the Speedgoat walking boots that Hoka make (they’re just like the running shoe but cover the ankle too) and my only gripe is they start to rub the outside edge of both little toes on longer walks

i live in the concrete jungles of michigan and my speedgoats are really good for trudging through snow, considering we don’t have much trail running here.
Asics Trabuco Max vs Hoka Speedgoat 5! Just an FYI it appears Hoka may be charging more for this shoe. I've heard consistently that it will be 155 USD not 145 USD.

Grilled Salmon, yes! Solid in the mud, but not the best by any means, not a Speedcross bite.

ASICS Fuji Lite 3
I’m in the Hyperion Tempo on the TM while watching this and it has a great butterfly style tongue too. Re: SG5, I borrowed v4 doing some mountain trails in Baja recently but it was too spongy for me. I prefer the Peregrines, which I purchased. I like a little ground feel and do very little true technical trail running. Using them on snowy trails at the moment, where the grip is outstanding. Speedgoats are great too for up to marathons for mid-packers or heavy runners

This scoring system is flawed, and for a while you’ve been saying it’s refined but it doesn’t seem that you really ever change anything. If you say you ‘love’ an aspect of the shoe you give it between 7-8.25, when you say something is just ok or ‘average’ it gets between 7-8. I’d almost prefer you just talk about the shoe without the scoring system at this point. Been a long time viewer (3+ years) and supporter but can’t keep watching these shoe reviews with this scoring system.
best part is the expected durability, haha, after max. 30 miles with a weight of approx. 60kg, useless
Seth according to Hoka representative they said March 2022 & would be $155, hope it stays $145 (SG 4's moved up from $140 from rest).

I think the Salomon rubber is softer and better for winter commutes. I've got over 350 miles on my Ultra Glides this winter. Great grip and soft.

That Pinky Toe compression is something I have experienced with all hoka shoes that i have worn and unfortunately makes it so I cant use them. My feet are not even wide but I guess the shape is very user-specific.

I’ve been racing in the Hoka Mafate Evos from a few years ago. How similar in feel/performance are the SG4’s compared to the Mafate Evo?

Sold out why? Simply bcs hoka does not have own production line, and chinease contract manufacturing lines are overloaded....so its limited production available from hoka in all models....

I've always been a New Balance and Asics dude but I am tempted to grab a pair of Hokas for my next road or trail shoe
I'm assuming NB rebel v2, but what do you use for asics.
Honestly, I probably like the Rebel's better than just about every road offering hoka has, aside from the mach or their more race oriented shoes. As far as trail goes, I am of the opinion that at this point hoka is the bar that all other company's are measuring up against. Just look down at people's feet next time you're on trail, half of the people you see out there are gonna be in hoka, whether it's speedgoats or torrent.
If you're looking to dip your toes into another road shoe brand hokas are still worth a shot, but honestly I would check out saucony, big fan of how them and asics have progressed over the last year or two.

Nice review! What mountain trail is that at 07:32? Reminds me of trails on Mt Rainier. Also, I wear a size 10 in the Torrents 2 but had to get 10 wide in SG4. Will that be the same with SG5’s, getting the wide shoe?
