Also 6ft,200lbs. I was looking at Challenger atr5. It had the highest drop in the HOKa trail lineup, although I really wanted the Evo speed goat.
I also ran trails in Skechers gorun7+ and maxroad4. The soles are lugged and the height is like a built in gaitor. Skechers are lighter than HOKa and pretty cushioned

The best Hoka for me was always stinson evo,,,but they let it go after a while ( the way it was) ,,,it worked so well for some many i actually do not understand why they changed it? i am told ATR was /is the progression from stinson ...but i found after the first few ATRs ,they just totally lost the plot.. ( stinson 3 was absolutely awful ).. the Mafate were always the marathon and ultra shoes i saw around me on feet in events, but i never tried those because i had/have bought up as many stinson evos as i could ( still have 3 pairs on the go ) ..
i have just bought a new Hoka evo speed goat ( not arrived yet) ...first pair of new shoes for 2 years !! so we will see ..

For me the Salomon is the best. My 3rd and 4th generation speedcross had more than 3000km of trail running (each of them had 3000+km). Now im using speedcross 5gtx, its perfect. I run almost every second day, i live in corsica, the mountains are hard, rocks everywhere but the contagrip of the salomon never fails, the shoe holds very good the ankle, the design and the material helps to go throw bushes... without get stucked. Their road shoes are not the best, but for trail Salomon is the king. I tried other brands but the every of them was lower in durability, comfort (after 100km of ard run, not like the small guys say i came out of the store and i dont like the shoe because...)
I like to watch your channel, your videos are very helpful and interesting.

QD: I really like Salomon's designs and almost "ahead of its time" approach to creation. Looking at what the elite ultra trail runners wear, most of them are strapped up in Salomon or Hoka. They are certainly the top dogs in the trail world with Inov-8 dominating as the more specialized shoe for those super rugged races. I think Altra has an opportunity to seize an untouched niche' in a similar way.

Most of us have limited experience with very many brands . I think most runners will have tried no more than 3-4 brands over several years and will therefore compare a 2020 Solomon shoe with some 2018 model of day Hoka or something. My choice will then be the one I had the better experiences with. Right now it’s Hoka for the trails I find myself on. 😀🏃‍♂️🏃‍♂️

For Trail Running I am an Inov-8 and la Sportiva guy. I run very technical trails with lots of hills, rocks, and roots, and high stack height shoes are not great in these conditions as they lead to ankle rolls, and potential injury. In these conditions I want some ground feel so that I can stay as steady as possible on my feet. Hokas are good for ultra marathons and less technical terrain, and road running, but give me Inov-8 for trail running any day.

I'm curious what's your thoughts about the speedgoat 4?
      I'm devastated about it :(...
I ran in all speedgoats, and every model 1,2,3 was getting better, but now the 4 just doesn't work, i need to do so much more effort to get at those 3.30/km pace.. they feel heavy and stiff

@@thibaultD1 I didn't try them yet... but since I wrote the comment above I started to develop blisters between my first and second toe on both sides, and on the inside of the heel, where the insole meets the upper of the shoe. Not a big problem though, perhaps the Speedgoat 4 wides would be a good replacement, but I need to check them out. With rocker shoes finding the right size is really important, perhaps that's why you aren't as fast in the SG 4 as in the SG 3?

@@adriankoch6501 ow damn that's sad, i don't get any kind of issues with the sg3.
They just fit perfectly and have enough traction, the fit of the sg4 is indeed different, especially the forefoot feels looser than the sg3..
But the traction is a lot better in the sg4, that's undeniable.
Good luck with your blisters and the sg4, i have tried the torrent 2, this seems more sg3 than the sg4 do

QD: I have run over 100 miles in the Nike Terra Kiger 6 and they have felt great (very responsive and a smooth ride) at faster paces on trails. I have not raced in the Terra Kiger yet, but they are definitely the shoes I'd reach for when I race on trails.

I have the Inov8 X-Talon 210's. I've done 265km or about 165 miles in them. It's a lovely shoe but the lack of underfoot protection is an issue on harder surfaces with lots of loose rocks and scree. Downhills on loose rocks and scree will hurt in this shoe. They are my go-to trail shoes for wet and muddy conditions though, as well as forested hills. I don't know how the underfoot protection on the X-Talon G235's is. I'd love to know because with some added protection these would probably become my go-to shoes for everything trail.
