    Own both of these trail shoes and love them both. It is great to have each one since it will allow you to tackle the same trail in different ways. Some days I want that nice cushion in the speedgoat and other days I want to pick up the pace and go at a more race pace and use the torrents.

      It really depends on the weather conditions James? People do wear the SG for the race but if it's muddy conditions it really doesn't give you enough grip on most of the course!

    Thanks for the interesting comparison. I’m preparing for a 58km ultra with 4000m elevation. It’s a new trail but supposed to be quite technical. I’m currently using the speedgoat 4 but I want to try the torrent at least for some shorter runs . The race sounds awesome, where abouts is it? I used the Speedgoats when I ran UTMB and it performed really well in the technical rocky areas. Also when you've got long, steep desents to run it definitely helps having a bit of extra cushioning 😊
      Good luck with your training and the race 🏃‍♂️💪

    Hey Loyd,
    great comparison - I really enjoy your videos!
    I'm a lightweight hiker with about 12 kg on my back and and wore mountain boots in the past, but am looking forward to change to trail runners.
    Right now I am torn between the Saucony Peregrine 10 and the Hoka Speedgoat 4. Can you share any wisdom if the cushioning in the speedgoat is more comfortable during hiking or more likely to get in the way?
    PS: My next trail will be the Cape Wrath Trail :)

    • @Run4Adventure
      @Run4Adventure  3 роки тому +2

      Thanks very much I'm glad you enjoyed it 👍
      Well the Speedgoats will definitely give you a lot more cushioning under foot but you'll always lose a bit of ground connection. It's not bad but it might take a bit of getting use to 😊
      The Peregrine 10 would give you way more connection and grip in muddy conditions but it's not as deeply cushioned 😊
      Both shoes will definitely do what you want but it come down to your personal preference, do you want connection or cushioning?
      Hope this helps and thanks for watching the channel it's really appreciated 🙏

    2 years and 8 different shoe types later, the Torrent continues to be my scalpel of choice. Been through 3 pairs and 850 mikes thus far. Now, if Hoka were to put a BOA system on it, hot damn, game over.

    Great review/comparison AND presentation! I am a big fan of the Challenger ATR which I use mainly on sandy trails (beach, dunes, forest) but also on harder ground and even paved roads. and the Speedgoat for running in the mountains. I have a wide forefoot and that is why the Challenger ATR is so good for me. How would you compare the Torrent 2 with the Challenger ATR? One more thing, the ATR does a great job keeping sand out of the shoes. How does the upper of the Torrent cope with sand? Thanks a lot! Cheers from Holland.

    • @Run4Adventure
      @Run4Adventure  3 роки тому

      I've got to be honest I'm not a big fan of the ATR 😔
      For me and where I run it really doesn't have enough grip! It's really a road shoe with just a little bit more grip 😊 If youve got a wide forefoot how do you get away with the Speedgoats, they're super narrow, have you got it in a wide fit?
      The Torrent 2 is a really nice trail shoe, compared to the ATR I'd say its a bit more responsive and it's definitely got more grip when it comes to the outsole 👍
      As far as width I've run in the Speedgoat and Torrents for years and I'd say the Torrent has a bit more width in the toe 👍
      Hope this helps and thanks for the support 🙏

  • @bluefirephoenix347
    @bluefirephoenix347 3 роки тому

    Love your reviews! You have a wonderful presence. Would you say the Torrent 2 is 2E width or close to it? For comparison, the Inov8 g270 is a little narrow for me and the Altra Superior 4.5 is perfect.

    • @Run4Adventure
      @Run4Adventure  3 роки тому +1

      That's great really glad you are enjoying the channel 👍
      The Torrent 2 is a standard D width shoe. Obviously a 2E width would vary in every brand but its going to be wider than a standard fit Torrent and unfortunately Hoka don't do a width fit Torrent. If the Inov-8 shoe is to narrow the Torrent will be to narrow. I'd personally say if Altras work for you I'd stick with that brand because it what they specialise in, a wide toe box 😊
      Hope this helps and thanks for watching the channel 🙏

    Thanks for the comparison. Want to get some Torrents but the Speedgoat 4's I have were so narrow in my usual 8.5 I had to move up to a 9 to get over that. Think I will try 8.5 with the Torrent 2 as that is my size in Clifton 6 and there is just enough width there in the standard fit! Cheers

    • @Run4Adventure
      @Run4Adventure  4 роки тому

      No worries Rich and thanks for watching the channel 👍
      The Speedgoat is pretty narrow, Hoka do do the SG4'S in a width fit which would give you more room.
      If you fit in a standard Clifton uk8.5 you'll be fine in a Torrent 2 in a uk8.5 👍 Hope this helps and don't forget to subscribe to our channel to keep up to date with future content 🙏

      Hi Chris, really glad you enjoyed it and thanks 👍
      No neither shoes has a rock plate. Obviously the Speedgoat has a lot of cushioning with that deep outsole so it really doesn't need a rock plate! 😊

      I'd say if you're flat footed you might get on better with the Torrent. The Speedgoats have quite a pronounced arch in the midsole and that could cause irritation. Hope this helps and thanks for watching the channel it's really appreciated 🙏

    Thanks a lot for this video. Just bought the Torrent 2 after 700 miles with the Torrent 1. Tomorrow I will test these on a muddy track, so I hope they will indeed offer more grip than the previous ones. I am also using these shoes for my road running, hence I am afraid the more sticky Torrent 2 might wear quite quickly...
    Question 1: which Hoka would you advice me for my road running. ?
    Question 2: what are the best shoes for Finish track, especially with big shavings ?

    • @Run4Adventure

      I hope the grip performed well on your Torrent 2's. It should wear similar to your original Torrents but they'll always wear a lot quicker if your using them for road as well! 😕
      As far as road Hokas I'd definitely recommend the Rincon, it's a great lightweight neutral road shoe 👍
      Not sure about Finish tracks? Didn't your Torrents work?

    • @Run4Adventure

      Hi there
      Theirs quite a few trail shoes that will haddle that now a days. The brands have finally realised that we don't all live on a trail or coast path!
      Hoka Torrent 2
      Hoka Speedgoat 3 or 4
      Saucony Peregrine 10
      Saucony Xodus 10
      Nike Pegasus Trail 2
      Salomon Sense Ride 3
      Brooks Cascadia 14
      All the above shoes will do that but obviously everyone's foot shape is different, everyone runs differently and the trail we run on can be so varied. I'd always recommend going to a good running shop and trying on as many pair as possible 👍
      You'll know when you've got the right pair on your feet! 👌
      Hope this helps Mr Random and thanks for watching the channel 🙏

    I was looking for a shoe for mixed running: regular Dovestone Reservoir and further mountain runs in Lakes and Snowdonia. I was going to get some cushioned shoes with maximum feeling of the surface, and after trying few pairs (Torrents as well)
    I ended up as an owner of Speedgoat 4 and I must say: Extra cushioning is nothing wrong as long as the front part of your foot sits tight in the shoe, not letting for any excessive movement side by side.
    I tried Altra Footshape on, but the midsole felt too soft and didn't have any front control.
    In this particular type of running I need to know what is going on underneath but too stiff is not good either.
    I had injury at my first run in new Salomons Speedcross because they are too stiff and they've got too agressive grip, not working on rocky mountain surface at all, bending foot randomly.
    In my opinion agressive hard grip and low cushionig shouldn't be called TRIAL shoes - I would call them MUDDY TRACTORS and probably they are great only for farmers runing on their mudy fields.
    They become danger when you step on rocks.
    This is my first proper trial shoe and after just two runs I have beaten my numbers already.
    Vibram on Speedgoats is super grippy and super soft the same time.

      To be fair Renat both shoes would handle that course fine. I would personally still go for the Peregrine 10's. I've found it really comfortable over distance. The grip on the Peregrine is better than the Torrent 2 and I think having the rock plate in the forefoot of the shoe is a real bonus 👍 The Torrent 2 is slightly lighter in weight but you don't really notice the difference when your running. Thanks for the informative review. Will definitely give the Torrent 2’s ago as part of my rotation providing they are wide enough for my feet. Am personally curious as to the level of grip from the Torrent’s compared to the Vibram Megagrip or the Contogrip in Salomon which work extremely well on the steep wet (slightly mossy) concrete paths all over Hong Kong as opposed to the outsole from the Challenger ATR which is abysmal. Could you please inform me which amazing trail you are running in your intro between 0:18 & 030 👍🏻

      Thanks Chris,
      To be fair I would judge the Torrent grip on the ATR, I personally think the ATR is a terrible shoe! 😊
      It's definitely not a trail shoe! It's just a road shoe with a slightly different outsole. The grip is rubbish!
      I would still say the Vibram Megagrip is slightly stickier than the Torrents but it's still very good 👍

    Thanks for the video. If you had to recommend one trail running shoe model purely for hiking, which one would you pick? I detest hiking boots so I'm looking for a lightweight trail shoe which is comfortable for walking long distances. Not for snow or icey conditions. A massive plus would be if its reasonably water resistant, and if it dries up fast after getting wet. Cheers.

    Hi, first time watcher but now subscribed. I'm training for my first 50 mile ultra and was deliberating between the Saucony Xodus 10 and the Speedgoat 4. Can't find any decent reviews of the latest Xodus but the few that I have found rate it highly (shares the same excellent PWRN+ midsole as the Triumph 17). As a heavier set runner would you recommend I consider the Torrent 2 also or stick with the current options?

    • @Run4Adventure
      @Run4Adventure  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Craig
      So glad you found us and thanks so much for the sub 🙏
      I personally think your original choice would be better 👍
      The Torrent 2 definitely has quite a lot less depth of cushioning than the Speedgoats and the Xodus. You're right the PWRRUN+ compound is great compound! The Xodus is quite heavy but it's very similar in construction to the Peregrine 10 and I'm a massive fan of that shoe. Obviously the Speedgoat offers a lot of cushion but if you haven't run in Hokas before it does take a bit of time to get use to them 👍
      Hope this helps and best of luck with the 50! Which race are you doing? Thanks for watching 🙏

      Run 4 Adventure GBUltras Pennine Barrier is the main goal but also M2L, Chester and AlwaysAimHigh Snowdon Ultra are on the agenda (probably not all of them though). Thanks for the tip, I did have a pair of SG2s but they were too small and tight in the toe box. Might stick with the Xodus which uses a softer foam than the Peregrine PWRN+ vs regular PWRN. Apparently it’s softer at the cost of responsiveness, not a massive issue over 50 miles 😀

      @@craigdennen6193 Sounds good Craig, they do the Speedgoat 4 in a width fit now if you did what to go for the Hokas but needed more room. Yeah the Peregrine 10 has PWRRUN+ as a top sole and PWRRUN as the midsole so it gives you an idea, I've also run in the Triumph 17's 😊

      You're definitely not the only one Massimo! I have lots of runners who try them on in store and feel very unstable underfoot. Unfortunately when ever you put a lot of deep cushioning under your foot you are going to loose connection and ground feel. Any trail shoe with a lot of cushioning is probably going to give you this feel but it might be worth trying on a pair of Salomon Ultra Glides. That's a pretty tricky combination! It really depends on the amount of road running you do? If it's a lot then you probably need a road shoe and a trail shoe. Obviously the coast path is very different to running on compared to the road, especially in winter conditions! To be honest both these shoes will do that but there will always be compromise 😊. Nice mate I reckon the Evo Speedgoats better than both of them & The Evo mafate 2 has better midsole than SPG4 The SPG4 also in wide , how about comparison Torrent 2 vs Peregrine 10 ?😀

      I agree the Evo Speedgoat is a nice shoe, I'm not a lover of the Mafate though! Yes the RMAT compound in the Mafate is great compound, I just find it a bit stiff and clumsy 🤔
      You must've read my mind, we will be doing a comparison between the Peregrine 10 and the Torrent 2 👍

    Hey Loyd, how do the Peregrine 10 compare to the Torrents?

    • @Run4Adventure
      @Run4Adventure  4 роки тому +2

      They're very similar to be honest Stuart 👍
      The Torrent is slightly deeper in the midsole but cushioning wish they feel pretty much the same. I'd say the Peregrine 10 is a bit more grippy 😊

      Run 4 Adventure So if you already have the Peregrine 10, there wouldn’t be much reason to check out the Torrent 2?

      @@joshroberts7093 maybe not Josh, they are very similar and I'd still go for the Peregrine 10 👍😊

    I like the underfoot feel and traction on the torant 2 much better

      You definitely get a lot more ground feel and connection in the Torrents but I think a bit more rock protection in the midsole would be a good thing. Thanks for watching Michael 🙏😊

    Speedgoats destroyed my front ankle tendons. The rubber tongue... ouch. My fault tho, because I ran 40 miles in the Speedgoat in ONE training run and sent them back. I'm used to Mafate 2's but they have over 400 miles on them. Just got the Torrent 2's and have a pretty technical 100k in 2 weeks. I'll have my Mafate's in the drop bag at mile 40 if I need to switch and mostly hike. That's MY PLAN. Torrent feels like a road shoe to me, but we'll see.

    I was a Hoka van for about 2 years but the durability was awful. Now running in the Saucony peregrine 10. Fantastic trail shoes

      You won't have any durability issues with the Peregrine 10 it's bombproof 💥

    • @Run4Adventure
      @Run4Adventure  3 роки тому

      I don't really notice a lot of difference in speed between them 🤔
      The Speedgoats definitely return more energy from the midsole though. Maybe that's what you're feeling 👍
