I grew up fishing with my dad in an old Feather Craft boat with a 5.5hp Johnson. I loved every minute of it. I still have memories of the fish we caught not just days but moments in those days. He died in 1969 and those memories are as fresh in my mind as the day they were made. I’m 71 now and still fishing every chance I get. I work at Bass Pro in the fishing department and I tell every kid I sell a reel to the most important thing is to have fun.

Exactly,...! Just like playing a friendly game of 8 ball .... once there's money or some type of wager ... it's not a game or even fun anymore...
There's been a lot of talk about electronics involved in bass tournaments,,,.. to me,.. these devices don't belong in tournaments... I'm in my 60's,.an old-school fisherman... no electronics or bait in my game...🤙😎👍

The drama comes a lot from the competition side, I think. The brotherhood is real. I hired a contractor for some house work a couple of months ago and we discovered that we both fish. As we were planning the project, every one of our conversations after that started with fishing and then moved on to the job at hand. My best fishing buddy (also one of my two best friends) sent me an excerpt from a book earlier this year about how, when you're young, fishing is usually competitive, but when you get older, it becomes much more teamwork. I was fishing with him earlier this year and we got into a school of trout in a little stream and he got one then stopped and called me over to go next. We were bass fishing the next day and I got a hit and missed it and had him throw in the same spot to see if he could land it. That's the beauty of it and the bond you get. I like fishing alone, but I love those days out there with my buddy and miss the days when I went with my dad.
Love your videos, and that you give us tips for the northeast, which are hard to find. Thanks for all you do.

Last month I went out fishing with my dad and my little brother, instead of my usual grind. The goal was just to have fun. I didn’t expect to catch anything big, I was using a small zoom finesse worm. Out of nowhere I catch a 5 pounder. That will forever be one of my favorite memories. Having my dad and brother there made it so much better. Fishing is so much fun.❤

even as a kid my age at 14 you can tell such a difference in how the fishing scene has changed, me and my dad have been tournament fishing for years and the lakes in my area have changed so much and there’s so much negativity towards any bass fisherman. the trash in the water and all that is just so much different, it’s so nice to go out and enjoy what we love to do but some people have such an ego it’s hard to.

    thanks Tyler,
I am 52 years old. I still remember the time my Dad took me out of 1st grade class(1979?) to go fish Whiskeytown lake in NorCal in the middle of the day. looking back, I assume the lake must have been recently stocked with trout. every cast with my zebco rod and reel with a black and yellow rooster tail caught an 8" trout. I must have reeled in 50 fish that day...I will never ever forget it...and that my Dad took time off work even to take me (we were not wealthy and it would have been a big sacrifice to his income to take off work)makes it even more special to me....after fishing for many years now, it is still my favorite fishing story to tell.

    • @burneracc2567
      @burneracc2567 4 місяці тому

Hey man I remeber when my dad took me to a lake, summer before 1st grade, I was 6, there was some event on the lake and my dad let me use his gear for the first time (that was my first experience fishing back in '09), classic Mepps, 8ft rod, spinning reel (I birdnested that thing a dozen times at least, somehow) and pike were biting like crazy that morning. Also easily dozens of fish caught, none stocked, all healthy, fat and happy.
Now I can cast inbetween 3ft from water and overhanging branch with a flick of wrist and never bird nest, catch a fish and have fun. Sadly poachers have ruined local waters and lots of native species are almost completly gone so asian carp are taking over but hell, we'll be throwing hand grenades at them if we have to.

100% bro. I started fishing again about 10 years ago after a long stint of not fishing since I was a kid. It’s therapeutic for me. A stressful job, tough life events, so on - fishing is the escape from all of that. Hanging out with your friends, talking about life, sharing laughs. When I see pro anglers cutting off other pros and even local anglers, and other industry drama…man I just don’t care for any of that - I love fishing- and I love the mental therapy it is for me.

My best memories are fishing. A friend/old timer of my parents used to put up with a young punk (me) when he wanted to fish for blue gill. He'd throw the ones that were too small right at my bobber and laugh. My former roommate, who I sometimes didn't get along with, was always willing to take me on the lake after work to fish for walleye. He even took me on a 5 hour road trip to Lake Kabetogama at the Canada border on a walleye trip. Cold as hell for a rookie outdoorsman who was drastically underequipped, but we saw the northern lights and caught some decent walleye that were amazing with some lemon juice in a foil pack on the grill. My older brother would call me while I was in college to find out what weekends I was available to go fishing in the Minneapolis area lakes for walleye or muskie. Unfortunately I've never caught a muskie. Occasionally when our parents went camping, we'd meet up and he would take me and Dad on the boat. I have a picture that I took of Dad grinning with a 5 pound walleye that he caught, and my brother grinning next to him because Dad was grinning. My brother called me "Gilligan" or "Little Buddy" and I called him "Skipper." I'd love to be able to fish with either of them again, but maybe they're able to go fishing again together, and maybe I'll join them again some day. Thanks oldtimer John. Thanks Brian. And thanks, Wayne/Skipper and Dad. Great times had by all.

When I find myself worried about the bite, or not enjoying the heat, I will remember that fishing is fun and that I have "brothers" aboard. Thank you for that inspiration. The attitudes of “ if you don’t fish the way I do you’re wrong. If you don’t hunt the way I do, you’re wrong”, have to stop. To each their own. Support the outdoor sports and support each other. Remember, it’s all supposed to be fun.

100% agree, I get it from bank fishermen all the time because I own a couple boats. Trust me nothing glorious 😅 a 78 silverline Hilo 16ft and an 11ft dinghy for little lakes and rivers. But I bank fish as much as I'm in my boat, it's where the fish are that I go... but none of them understand how much I put into what little I have compared to a pro fisherman, I fix all my own things, build or improvise most of my accessories and buy everything at a steal of a price. We all need to stop worrying what others are using or own and just get back to loving fishing

There are a lot of guys that have lost touch with the fact that fishing is an amazing enjoyable fun hobby that we are so blessed to be able to do and share all together! Tournament guys, and others that are trying or hoping to do it for a living get really competitive to the point where they don't have fun. They get angry and stressed and disrespectful all because of the love of money. Guys can't be happy if they aren't winning or moving closer to their monetary goals. People are over extending themselves financially to keep up with the trends of new boats and electronics so their results are do or die. When I was a teenager and a young adult I seen tournament fishing as a career path I wanted to pursue and I got real serious about it to the point where it wasn't fun any more. Trying to work full time and fish tournaments just bleeding out money constantly and not having ample practice time and all of that made me pretty toxic towards a lot of things in life, especially work and having that obligation all of the time. These days (15 years later) I have a new outlook on fishing, tournaments, and life in general that allows me to do it when it makes sense, but not let it consume me. I know I'm not going to make a living fishing, and I wouldn't even want to if I could. It's the furthest thing from easy and realistically out of 1,000 bass anglers about 1 of them will actually have a decent career out of it. Being realistic, figuring out what you want out of life, investing your hard earned money so that it's always working for you, and fishing without pressure always makes it a lot more enjoyable. You can practice or not practice, win or get last, and you still enjoy the whole experience because it beats being at work lol Gotta change your heart and mind and remember that God comes before all things and then you will relearn how to enjoy life and be happy again! God Bless!

Tyler, I like your segments a lot and appreciate your sentiment here. I think part of the issue is generational. Us older guys have what you are talking about in brotherhood yet we clearly see the demise of bass fishing as a sport through technology that removes most of the intuition and skills that are acquired after many years on the water. Easy for me to say at age 70, that I'm done with all the technology and crazy expense of everything related to fishing. I have come to realize that you absolutely do not have to have $100,000 boats with $30,000 electronics and $800 rods and reels along with $30 lures to enjoy and be successful at bass fishing. We have all been led to this by fishing industries that have convinced us that we must have all this "stuff" to be successful and happy. Far from the truth..... thanks again for your insightful wisdom that seems more and more rare these days...

Fishing is one of the most wonderful things in my life. It’s simply spectacular, and I attempt to utilize my passion for it as a bridge to common ground with others who may not understand who I am, and find my trans status off putting prior to our interaction as humans.

Amen brother. Ironically, I think for some fishermen, resisting FFS is a bit of a proxy for fighting again the overly measured, overly competitive, overly shared, and generally bad things that develop in fishing. Not saying that's true, but I think it is where at least some of the passion comes from. And for what it is worth...we are still here...."we few, we happy few, we band of brothers".

If there wasn’t forward facing sonar, there wouldn’t be any of this drama. People are so quick to want to catch fish by any means necessary, that they don’t care whether it’s ethical or fair chase or not.

This is wrong. Take a look at any given tournament on any given weekend at any given lake and you’ll find animosity over who took who’s spot, who came too close to who, etc etc

My gpa taught me to fish but died when I was young. I never had people to fish with until I created a fishing forum and met some guys. Before that I had a couple friends who would fish but nobody as addicted to it as me. Also nobody wanted to share tips or tricks on the local forums. My gf will fish with me sometimes now but I just usually kayak fish alone. Fishing gets you away from all the drama so going alone is actually peaceful. I like UA-cam channels like this cause its an outlet for me to comment. Nobody I talk to cares about fishing its like talking to a wall about it to them. 😂

Great video. I feel the same way. I’m over all the BS drama in the elites and MLF. Every time I’m at the ramp are talk to people on the water I ask if they caught em all. If they say it’s been tuff I tell them exactly where I been catching em. I’ve even given them my waypoints. I want everyone to catch the biggest bass in the lake and idc if they use FFS are a net are live bait. Whatever is fun to each person is up to them. If they like it, I love it. Leave the drama out of our fun.

Preach Brother! I fish in a small club of old men (mostly all retired) we are allowed by rules to bring two guest a year. We have another rule for family members. We have one man who always saves his guest visit for the two night tournaments each year. Then he brings in a Pro who fishes MLF and Bass Masters. He is his club champion in Night fishing. We catch 4-7 lbs he catches 12-15 lbs. Now this isn’t a big money tournament, it’s only $10 each. But this guy has bragging rights to the night championship because he brings in a Pro. It’s not fair to our regular members. I guess it’s time for a rule change and ban Pro’s. It has caused members to drop out of the night tournaments.

Yeah I agree. Dude I went to my local pond and there was 2 guys fishing, I just came around the trail and was walking towards one of them to ask "if he had got any bites" because we all know August and September are some TOUGH days. And the closer I got to him he just picked up his things and walked away acting annoyed like I guess he thought I was coming to steal his spot or something. Proceeded to the other side of the pond, no wave anything it honestly hurt my feelings a bit.

Fishing is fun! As a bank angler. I don't think about electronics. I just go out and fish. I love being on the water. I also don't care if others use electronics or not. Makes no difference to me. I want to catch fish. I want to see other's catch, and I want to see others having a great time on the water.

I’ve unsubscribed from several fishing channels because they brought the drama with the info. I’m not down for the drama, and I am especially not here for politics.
I’m down to a handful of channels by guys like you. Guys I feel like I would enjoy fishing with. UA-cam has become a sea of product shills and dudes who chase likes using drama as bait.
    Keep doing you!
