  • LG has expedited firmware update 3.10.19 on its 2023 OLED TVs including the G3 & C3 to fix the unwanted auto-dimming in prolonged, dark HDR scenes, so there's no need to lament the absence of [TPC Enable] setting in the service menu anymore.

      @@dan9700 there is a specific scene in the movie Gemini Man where Will Smith and his female friend have a fight with some baddies in a boat house office. That one scene drove me to distraction on my B6 OLED. I immediately disabled TPC in the service menu. When my replacement C1 arrived I immediately did the same thing. To see this 'bug' being present for such a long time is ridiculous and any arguments over breaking the warranty just by toggling a hidden menu option to 'fix' this issue I would argue in a court of law if it came to it. No doubt I would lose because I don't have the clout of big corporations but I would have a good try!

      @@dan9700 Oh, it definitely happens. I’m surprised you haven’t noticed. Have you never felt that a scene is just way too dark to barely see anything? Because if you have, it’s almost a certainty it’s because of the TV and not the creators intent. If you watch the 2 minute mark of the previous video that HDTVTest posted, I can tell you that is NOT an exaggeration of what it looks like.
      For me at least it’s been my #1 complaint about my CX. I actually gave in and bought the service remote a while ago but I only turn the auto-dimming off during movie-watching and turn it on again when I’m done. I’m scared it might cause issues if it’s permanently turned off. But you shouldn’t have to do this.

    THANK YOU Vincent for holding LG's feet to the fire, thank you other commenters for making your voices heard, and thank you LG for listening and responding quickly. This puts the G3 back in my shopping cart (x2) for my colour grading studio and for personal home use as well. Because I'm working with critical colour accuracy at work, it's imperative that the screen brightness not vary during that process, since it's been meticulously calibrated. Whilst I'm still going to want to know that the screen dimming can be disabled for static shots (since I might be looking at it critically on pause while grading), it's a huge step forward. I think every colourist will more than happily trade the warranty for that ability. I know I did when I first set TPL and GSR off on my CX. And you know what? Yes, I have a small amount of burn-in on my CX as a result. And that's OK, I'm not going to complain and I'm not expecting LG to fix what I know I've contributed to. I am responsible for that choice and as an adult, I can live with that :) Looking forward to your full review and also seeing how the new service remote settings work to make everything 100% accurate at all times for my job.

    The fixing of the algorithm responsible for unwanted dimming in the updated firmware is certainly an improvement, but unless/until you can completely disable auto-dimming in the service menu (or preferably in the advanced settings in the typical tv settings application), this is still a problem. There are those of us who use these displays as computer monitors and the auto-dimming is not only INCREDIBLY annoying, it severely impacts my ability to maintain high levels of color accuracy in creative workloads such as photo editing and video production. I firmly believe that maintaining auto-dimming, in it's current (fixed firmware) state by default is certainly the correct choice as in the most likely environments and contexts, it will behave correctly to users' expectations, but advanced users should be able to turn this feature off completely should their needs differ from default contexts.

      @kasakka Рік тому +3

      It's telling that the "monitor" counterparts to these TVs often don't have this feature enabled or let you disable it from the main menus. I feel like LG is trying to push people to not buy the much cheaper (especially around end of year sales) C3 as a desktop display and instead their (or partners') "monitor" versions of the same thing.

There was an update done last week and it has made the UI so much more responsive and it no longer hangs or becomes unresponsive. I have not had this issue on the S95b with ABR coming in. I also looked at the G2 when I bought the Samsung. The guy that sold me the TV after I raised the issues with the S95b, he threw in an extended 5 year warranty. In Australia we have very little issues with the S95b so how odd is that. I know there are many reports of issues with the S95b. I am now converted to OLED and never going back to LCD TV's. Samsung lost me forever with the crappy software they had on whatever TV of theirs I had. It was so obnoxious. I have a lot of game consoles that get swapped in and out as I play different games, and every time I changed what was plugged in it would reset all of the settings to enable all kinds of garbage post processing and auto dimming and weird color temperatures I didn't want. I'd have to spend a couple minutes every time changing it all back again. And sometimes I didn't even have to change what was plugged in, it would just go ahead and change it all anyway because it felt like it.
      LG C2 sometimes decides "Oh you plugged in a PS3, we'll change the input name. Oh now you plugged in a Wii U, we'll change the input name again". But otherwise it leaves the settings alone. Thank goodness!!! I really don't care if it screws up the names, I just remember the HDMI numbers anyway.
