this is one of the deal breakers for OLEDs in general, I honestly don't know why manufacturers haven't figured out a sweet spot for the TPC algorithm after 10 years of OLED TVs on the market
And it is not even needed. I disabled the TPC on my 2015 model when i got it And i h have been using it as an monitor with crazy hours on it since then with zero burn in. Just don't run it on max OLED light 24/7, don't let it get to hot and use basic burn in strategies like screen savers and dark mode in apps. Without TPC off no scene is stable and your calibration is pretty much useless. And the strict ABL on the OLED already males the calibration less than stable. But with TPC on it gets so dark you don't see anything. It is pretty much unusable and jarring to see it just dim whenever SO MUCH.
@@semahj Honestly that is a very small price to pay for FAR superior picture quality. Using a shitty LCD panel in anything after getting used to perfect inky blacks and infinite contrast of the OLED is a struggle, it just looks so incredible bad when you know how an OLED screen can display content. @@cajampa just because you can't recognize burn-in doesn't mean you don't have it. all OLEDs will get burn-in, and all of them have burn-in to a certain degree. that's how OLEDs work, each LED is alive and has its own life span, so it dies at a different rate compared to its neighbors. that's what burn in is.

That is the primary reason not because they're afraid of replacing TVs through warranty. Nobody wants to pay a thousand dollars+ then wait 3 weeks for LG to fix the issue. What they just did is akin to a responsible parent making sure the gun is hidden and locked away so they can't hurt themselves.

This news further confirms my good decision in getting a non OLED monitor Samsung G8 over a OLED TV to be used as a gaming and desktop monitor. No worries about burn in and dimming protocols.
I was on the fence between switching to Sony or sticking with LG for my next Oled, This decision has just made that choice much less difficult (but ouch my wallet)
Buying my first new TV in almost 10 years! I found this channel during my research. My choices were either the LG G3 77", the Sony qd-oled 77" (when its released), or the Samsung qd-oled 77". Now it seems like LG is eliminating itself from contention. I will be pairing one of those with either the Nakamichi Dragon 11.4.6 (when it's released), or the Sony HT-A9 system.
I’m in the same situation. My soundbar will most probably be the Sennheiser Ambeo Max. Have you checked that one? I’m favoring LG because of the 4 HDMI 2.1 ports. But if they don’t change this stuff before May, I will most probably also choose a different brand. What a shame. Was really looking forward to a 77” G3.
@@ZeoKZ666 I came across the Ambeo Max while collecting reviews, and it seems like it's been significantly eclipsed by Sony's HT-A9. The Nakamichi Dragon 11.4.6 is making out to be a beast of a game changer (based on initial impression previews). The reviews of the HT-A9 (I don't really consider it a "soundbar") put it in a league of its own, currently. Have you looked into either of the two I mentioned? If so, what are your thoughts, and what made you decide on the Sennheiser?
Do yourself a favor and look at the sheer magnitude of people with defective S95B's. I'd be very hesitant buying a Samsung, because their software updates you can't actually opt out on break stuff frequently as well. Not to mention they sold the tv and made it darker with their updates. Pretty shady practices.
I’m also in the race for 2023 OLED but I have also Philips MLA model on my list (and Panasonic even though I don’t think they can compete in 77 inc w/o MLA) and in terms of soundbar the Nubert 8500 XS-8500 RC series. But it’s not available everywhere. Will have a look on the Nakamichi as well
Sony has the same problem but is a nicer set. LG’s big selling advantage for many enthusiasts was the ability to turn off ASBL, for gaming and low-APL scenes. Now that that’s gone, LG WOLEDs have nothing in particular to recommend them over competitors.
Any technology that requires manufacturers to force users to have an unacceptable image quality to prevent faults should be avoided at all costs. If other manufacturers allow those precautionary functions to be disabled, you're basically condemning yourself to early degradation. I'll hold out until micro led becomes available at an acceptable price point, until then QLED is the only sane option in my opinion.
Looking forward to your thorough test of the G3/C3 when you have a unit. The auto-dimming issues caused by ASBL/GSR....etc are possibly going to put me off investing in a G3 if they cannot be turned off in the service menu.
I have been noticing this weird dimming on my LG CX for years now but never turned it off. When buying a new TV I would try to get one that doesn't do this, but am unsure. If Samsung QD Oleds also have this and LG still does...that would leave LED TVs, but I am not sure I could go back to backlight issues and all that...
I disabled it on my b9 with the service remote. Made a big difference. Could not stand the dimming. If there is no way to turn it off now, then i will not be buying an lg tv again.
Hollywood studios should be forced to watch with this auto dimming on. Also, this algorithm seems really, extremely dumb. Why would they dim down the image when the picture is dark anyway? What are they trying to prevent?!
burn-in. as much as people like to pretend that it isn't an issue, the myriad protections and mitigations they have in place show that it is indeed still a problem. they're slapping band-aids on top of five other band-aids trying to fix it and people keep disabling them so i can see why they just removed the ability to circumvent their mitigations entirely, even if i dont agree with it.
I currently have the LG C2 and would like to disable the TPC, have you provided the link for the service remote and the 4 digit service code for the C2? I would greatly appreciate if you can provide both please. Thank you 🙏
Is there an increased risk of burn in if I disable TPL on my LG CX? While it will improve Dolby Vision / HDR viewing, do I need to be more careful with static images or SDR viewing?
TPC has completely put me off buying LG in the future. I shouldn't have to invalidate my warranty to make my TV usable, its been the one major problem I noticed moving from a C8 to a C1. How they thought this aggressive behaviour was acceptable I do not know.

After I set it up, it works. But I have to redo it every time. Set up hdmi1 ps5 Hdmi2 eARC Hdmi3 Xbox And I use Apple TV Sent from my iPhone
Does the warranty become void if you turn off tcp or change any of the service menu options? I would really appreciate it if anyone could answer this. Also, does the g2 allow in the service menu to turn off auto dimming?
Why does TPC kick in after prolonged DARK scenes? Why can't it display DARK scenes for as long as it wants, as DARK scenese are not pushing the panel hard
If the picture brightness sinks under a certain value, the TPC algo is not able anymore to detect in-picture-movement and so on it will give out an STATIC PICTURE FLAG to the OLED panel firmware and the dimming curve is starting. The root cause - I think - relies in the type of data the TPC algo receive. Maybe it relies only on changing voltage values and the lower the OLED light output the narrower the changing voltage range. Color and/or luminance value based data algo would add too much lag. Anyway, maybe I am totally wrong. 🤷♂
I totally agree that LG tends to excel with their second-generation products, but often disappoint with their third-generation releases, such as the LG G2 and LG G3 phones.

I have the 77" C1 as well and I haven't had that big of an issue with the brightness but I have the one with the WBE or G1 panel. I didn't change anything in the service menu hell I didn't even access it at all and it's noticeably brighter than my buddies C1 guess I got lucky with the panel lottery! 😃

This was a big advantage over other oled brands. Bad move unless they don't really dim now.
You can't game on an oled with dimming.
this is one of the deal breakers for OLEDs in general, I honestly don't know why manufacturers haven't figured out a sweet spot for the TPC algorithm after 10 years of OLED TVs on the market
And it is not even needed. I disabled the TPC on my 2015 model when i got it
And i h have been using it as an monitor with crazy hours on it since then with zero burn in.
@@cajampa honestly that’s a lot of work compared to a LED I like max brightness
@@semahj Honestly that is a very small price to pay for FAR superior picture quality. Using a shitty LCD panel in anything after getting used to perfect inky blacks and infinite contrast of the OLED is a struggle, it just looks so incredible bad when you know how an OLED screen can display content. Also, I have never even been close to wanting more light output anyway. Why blast your eyes with more damaging blue light than necessary.

Cool and I’m not getting a G3 anymore.
Dear Vincent, please make a comprehensive guide for TPC turning off for all major OLED TV brands, please 👏

@@reviewforthetube6485 That was my first thought. LG is pushing brightness so far to compete with QD-OLED that the TVs are already on the verge of failing.
@@SomeUserNameBlahBlah yep agreed but there is still an agenda out there so regardless of how good or not good they sre. They will always be backed lg is way to good at promoting there tvs and getting every reviewer I'm the book.
@@reviewforthetube6485 LG is great because the employees at LG Display create such amazing panels. They're not paying reviewers or plotting some evil agenda to screw the consumers. LG is the forerunner of OLED. Liike one commenter said, they're putting in these safely measures for a reason and that reason is to PROTECT THE CONSUMER.
Have had my LG C1 for 9 months with 3600+ hours. Only noticed the TPC dimming in the first few months. Since I've never noticed. But recently changed TPC and GSR off. Just in case lol
Time to stock up on a few C1s.
I wonder if this is because of the energy standard requirement ruling by the European Union.
I too was going to pull the trigger on the C3, I just love the inky oled blacks, but not having full control over auto-dimming (and no ATSC at that price) is a deal breaker. I think I'll get the TCL QM8 and save a thousand dollars.
LG fixed the issue shortly after Vincent released this video.

I have never noticed this dimming on my lg c2
Then it is much more difficult to do colour calibration on G3, that's really bad.
GSR...No Fap...JFC, I'm dying here, Vincent! 🤣👏
I have to admit, the thought has just occurred to me, what is to stop them from pushing out an update which disables this ability in our C1 and C2s?
So, they have a completely broken feature, making the display useless for a large amount of content.... and then remove the workaround?
Good job LG
How do we know it isn't fixed in these models?
I haven't had a single complaint with dimming on my G2. I specifically got it for the heatsink and I think it works beautifully.
I need help as the C4 has a different Service menu and I can't find these settings.
This is the first thing I disable when I buy an LG OLED. This will likely lose me as a customer. Shame on LG.
Dont the qd-oleds have non disableble, asbl auto dimming?
Atleas sony does not give the option if I remember right.
Will have a look on the Nakamichi as well
This is a big deal. I was leaning towards the G3, but might buy something like the Sony A95L instead.
You’ll have the same problem with Sony. I’m going to buy my first non OLED tv in like 7 years. I buy one every year… don’t judge me
@@aegontargaryen573 don't judge you, just envy you.
Thanks for this video. I'll buy the C2. The information in this video was the difference between buying the C2 or the C3 for me.
Looking forward to your thorough test of the G3/C3 when you have a unit. The auto-dimming issues caused by ASBL/GSR....etc are possibly going to put me off investing in a G3 if they cannot be turned off in the service menu.
Thank you! That also explains why A80l is darker
Just looking forward to comparaison between Samsung S95C to Song A95L
Wow that's ridiculous, Heaven forbid we as consumers want to disable awful picture settings on a TV we paid over $1,000 for.

yes
Vince when will you get the LG Oled G3 to test?
