That APL issued should be resolved through a firmware update. These are very expensive premium TVs and having the image quality degrade to such a poor level is unacceptable at this price level. Why should you have to void your warranty to watch a show as intended.
You may thank Samsung for overly hyping the "OLED burn in" issue since 2018 ... resulting in about every second post in comment sections was about OLEDs "massive" ... lol ... risk for burn in ... plus all these users cutting off the power supply after having the tv switched off resulting in the "pixel refresher" wasn't able to do it's job. Now all OEMs are extremely anxious and cautious and trying to avoid "burn in" by any means. As a result they are all overshooting the mark now !
@@jamesearly7388 Yes, I am fully aware of that ... nevertheless they continue with this overly cautious ASBL implementation ! btw ... I disabled ASBL on my 2017 OLED ... because I am 100% convinced dimming an already very dark scene running with only 10% of the panels capacity to only 5% or even 2% through an overly aggressive ASBL ... doesn't make a difference regarding "burn in" at all !
APL reduces risk of image retention and burn in and will always be present on OLED if OLED or QD OLED has heatsink like Sony Bravia A90J or A95K it less like to get ABL.
So in other words all these anomalies are caused by manufacturer's OLED burn in protections. So if you want the best picture your OLED can outpput you have to essentially risk voiding your warranty and an increased risk of burn in. This is why I am reluctant to get an OLED TV.
Bought and used the remote for my LG CX today. Took 30 seconds. I genuinely was planning to buy a new TV. Now I don't have to. You're a lifesaver, thank you.
Thank you for discussing the OLED Dimming issues. They have been around for many years now, and I was always surprised that no one mentioned them in the reviews. It is absolutely ridiculous that they haven't addressed this yet and we need to use a service remote to fix those annoying issues. I already bought the remote a few weeks ago but didn't used it yet. Thanks again.
It's kind of funny how I got here from the "LG C3 vs Samsung S90C vs Sony A80L OLED TV Comparison" video, that ended on the note how burn in is not an issue anymore because of all the techniques used to prevent burn in. At the end it links to this video, which seems to be all about turning off these burn in protections to prevent random dimming? lol
After my LG C8 OLED burned in, I swapped it out with a QD Mini LED. Everybody was saying back then that OLED burn in wasn't an issue anymore, yet here we are. I'm so glad I don't have to worry about burn in anymore
After years of buying Samsung TVs that never had inky blacks, I finally bought a 65" LG C9 a while back. It was everything I wanted except for the frustrating dimming during Ozark and other movies. Handicapping a fantastic TV like this is just crazy to me.
Bought a C1 a month back and while yes the blacks are amazing... the HDR experience is absolutely woeful. Nothing pops, and the image is dimmer than SDR content. Cant say I am particularly happy tbh
Bought my C1 in November of 2021. Everything was perfect until late August. Bought the service remote on Amazon, made the adjustment in less than a minute, everything is perfect again! Thanks for the info!
Wow, this is a very timely video. I was being driven nuts watching certain DV content on AppleTV+ that became absolutely unwatchable during some scenes because it was soooooo dark (FYI, watching "See" on AppleTV+ is particularly egregious). My LG 77" CX is out of warranty now, so I will absolutely be picking up one of those service remotes and fixing this issue ASAP.
You can do it without a service remote using a PC. There’s a reddit thread on it titled: How to access LG Service Menu without the Service Remote Just did the trick for me!
This issue is absolutely maddening and I am strongly considering returning my OLED. Why in the hell would I want to spend all this money just to have the tv do this?? I don't understand. This is my first step into 4k and it just doesn't make sense why they would do this and not give the option to turn it off...
@@Jza-GZa40k I don’t understand how this is something that is just allowed to pass. The TV will just ruin its own image if you’re watching a dark scene.
@@citizen3000 Also crazy that LG just throw in a VA panel to certain sizes of TV and then say nothing about it in the specs. We are victims of their marketing games. Don't attempt to make sense over it, it'll drive you insane.
They don’t give an option to turn it off because then you’re likely reducing the life of the TV due to burn in. They want you to think they are fixing the burn in issues but they are just implementing a bunch of hacky work arounds to get them past the warranty period more often.
I don't have an OLED tv but I really enjoyed this video! It would have been informing to know the actual effects (or your opinion on the effects) that impairing protective auto dimming has on screen burning.
That “strobing effect” on OLEDs for panning shots became really apparent to me when watching Army Of The Dead and there was a panning shot of an abandoned Las Vegas. You couldn’t even make out what you were seeing it was so bad. This was on my LG C9, and the only way to fix it was with the trumotion setting enabled. And I agree, doesn’t look good with it on, but the newer OLEDs having a dedicated cinematic mode for it is a step in right direction, it’s good to see.
This isn't just an HDR issue. My 65C6P from 2016 started doing this recently after a firmware update auto applied itself. It's not HDR, and nor is it getting any HDR signal sent to it. It's pretty annoying - good when I forget to shut the TV off and it sits there at the menu of my media player, but bad when you're watching a show that has some static-ish content for a few minutes and it starts to dim. If anything, it would be nice to have a setting so I could set it longer, rather than turning it off all together.
You can turn off TPC on the C6 as well. I had this issue while watching dark scenes in The Walking Dead in SDR on my C6, as well as dark scenes in some HDR games. I turned off TPC and my experience was improved considerably.
YEP, my Sony A8H aggressively auto-dims while I'm playing GTAVO in SDR. It gets so dark despite me turning every brightness feature to the max. I'm about ready to get all up into the service menu and shut that shit off.
Thank you so much HDTV ! I have just bought a LG C2 65” and was wondering why the screen was dimming and now bought the remote and made the changes to the two areas and it’s great now !
Thanks, Vincent. I've been holding off on disabling TPC on my LG C1 but if you've gone to the point to suggesting it as in this video, there is really is no fix. I honestly find it hard to recommend the C1 for others for movies because of how constantly I have to "wake up" the display. And I also get pulled out of the experience way too much because I'm always paranoid if TPC kicked in. I feel like LG really made a mistake here with how aggressive it is. I think it triggers in 60 seconds and that seems way too soon.
I never notice any dimming on my LG C1 so i leave the service menu alone, but if i had this problem than warranty or no warranty i would definitely turn off TPC and GSR in the service menu because this is more than annoying!
I noticed crazy dimming and a sudden shift to higher brightness one time watching Ozark on my LG c1, I wondered what the hell had happened or if I'd imagined it. Thank you Vincent!!
I find it hard to believe that such a fundamental flaw as that dimming is so very rarely mentioned in reviews. Forget LCD local dimming halo-ing, this is on a different level of annoyance! Entering the service menu really is not a good option. How can OLEDs receive so much praise when they have such fundamental flaws? We hear about how burn in is not really an issue anymore? Well the sticking plaster that has been applied to handle it really means it hasn't been handled at all!
well its not a flaw its a design that was included to protect the life of the panel over its life.... however yes its annoying and ive owned 3 OLEDs now and have never had any issues. so i as well would like this turned off.
@@markcary8165 it's completely broken. It's supposed to help with bright static images and I've only ever had it trigger during dark dynamic scenes in movies/tv shows.
@@Debate_everything😂 nice logic to try to convince yourself there is no flaw. The flaw is still there, the “feature” that’s problematic is to work around (not fix) the flaw. Disable the “features” and the flaw returns.
Could you measure the temperature of the display before and after applying these tips of yours. It would be interesting to find out if there is an increase in the temperature of the display.
Great video, thanks Vincent. I turned off TPC on my C1 last week, it bothered me to no end. It wasn't fully clear to me how GSR worked so I left that on, I didn't know it dimmed the whole screen. I'm fine with the HUD being dimmed, in fact that feature soothes my fear of burn in a bit. Would turning GSR off and setting Adjust Logo Brightness to Low/High be the best option for me? Or does GSR disable logo dimming altogether? And when does the tv even consider something a logo? Most HUDs aren't fully static after all (bullet count, health/stamina bar, minimap). I'd appreciate some help with this
I noticed this issue on Diablo 2 Resurrected for the PS5. It would get gradually darker while playing until I could not tell what was going on. So I had to press the home button and find a bright screen to "reset" it. Then in Cyberpunk the inventory menu would do the same thing but much faster. I knew I had to disable it because it made these two games unplayable and was giving me (literal) headaches. I am glad you made a video about it though. I had to find info on a forum and got the remote off of Amazon for like $9. Best purchase I've made in a long time. I only use my TV 1 to 2 hours a night at most so I am not worried about burn in.
Another excellent video. Nice to see such a wide range of configuration being covered with right advice on usage provided, as it is purely user discretion what inherent post processing person will use. It is there for user experience and pushing superior image quality past predefined boundaries. Less is more, although I wouldn't be afraid to use highest setting available and or nothing at all dependant on type of content viewed. Should also cover PC mode where TruMotion is limited exclusively to BFI for lowest input lag. Turn screen shift on and off every time, on older firmware I noticed this setting would still automatically apply itself even when disabled
These brands are selling HDR OLED TVs while they can't back that claim after watching HDR content for couple minutes. HDR TVs / Monitors have been a very long slippery slope in the industry for couple years now. Hope the dumb VESA certification does something about this idiotic HDR issue in the industry.
Incredible timing. I experienced the auto-dimming for the first time last night on my LG CX while watching Dune. Guess it's time to buy a service remote!
If you don't want to risk voiding your warranty, simply hit the OK button or any of the arrows on your LG TV remote and your brightness will be restored instantly
@ChrisJ Fox kind of but it's better than taking a chance on bricking your tv or even worse, having a TV breakdown under warranty but then when they come to repair it the service man finds you tampered with the technician menu and then relay that to LG and then they deny to cover your tv repair cost! Remember, the ABL is only bad if you have a super dark scene that lasts for more than a couple of minutes. As soon as the scene changes to a brighter one, ABL will raise back to normal. On my TV I've only had bad ABL twice and I've had my TV for nearly 2 years now. So this problem is very rare and fixes itself quickly when the scene changes as I mentioned above. Far from a deal breaker. I love my CX!
I ended up buying the remote and doing this on the LG C1 - thank you Vincent for this information. Amazing that no reviewer ever talks about this, which makes me wonder if they actually review anything properly. One of the worst culprits I had for this issue is the end sequence in Clint Eastwood's "Unforgiven". I gets so dark in that scene with this setting ON that you can't actually end up seeing anything whatsoever!
Another excellent video Vincent, thank you.. Am I the only one though that feels a modern TV shouldn't need this kind of fiddling with? You spend a fortune but end up with a tv that helpfully keeps darkening the picture. Am keen on lg oled for gaming but would be lying if i said that all the issues with oled are not a concern.
What he doesn’t tell us is that these features are mainly there to protect the screen. Yes, they degrade the viewing experience but they probably also save the companies a lot of warranty issues and money.
omg this is problem i’ve been having! ill be in a game menu managing inventory or whatever and the screen gets so dark i can barely see what im doing!!!! so so frustrating im using an LG C1
Are these aggressive auto dimming algorithms present on the 3rd generation QD-OLED monitors such as the AW3225QF as well? If so, can they also be disabled like the TVs you outlined in this video?
The flicker on our CX has begun to be more noticeable and I have been searching for answers now for a week. Glad you brought this up in your video. It seems to be a new problem so hopefully LG does something to help us out!
@@anthony3192 No ... burn in is close to impossible by deactivating "TPC" because it almost 100% only activates itself in very dark scenes ... and dark scenes - with low current applied and subpixels at low performance level - is not what is a risk for the panel. BRIGHT static elements is what is a risk... Nevertheless (really) paused frames still get dimmed after some time ... this didn't change.
@@marcuscole8796 I deactivated TPC AND GSR on my CX 55, because on games like Diablo 2 or Fortnite it darkened a lot (SDR), on fortnite instead of only darkening the logos it darkened the entire screen. By disabling tpc and gsr this doesn't happen, the tv only obscures the logos and not the entire screen. Am I at risk of burning? should I reactivate tpc and gsr?
Vincent- Can you clarify on GSR? I think a lot of us are unclear about how to handle this setting as gamers. If I flip this off in the service menu, but still use logo dimming in the regular TV settings, will it still dim the static logo images without dimming the whole screen? If so I would love to turn this on. If not it seems it would be putting my TV in severe risk of burn in by disabling. I just don’t want to make the wrong choice here. Thanks so much for your always excellent videos! 🙌
Yeah I'm wondering this too, though I feel like if a game is modern enough to have HDR chances are it's modern enough to make the static parts semi-transparent, or even having an auto-setting that makes the HUD disappear if it's not needed (like Elden Ring). And if a game is in SDR, would it even be bright enough to carry much of a risk?
So I'm pretty sure it only removes the global dimming while maintaining local dimming of static images. Don't quote me, but I'm pretty sure that's what Ive seen on Reddit. I'm actually about to test this rn, so I'll report back. Currently watching UFC so I got plenty of static images to test 😂
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. I have an LG CX, and even having turned off energy saving settings, this huge dimming and re-brightening was driving me insane when watching movies.
Thank you, Vincent! Those were my only complaints about my 65C9 and the help of the remote and your advice how to turn them off make me love my oled much more. Logo detection works flawlessly even after turning both TPC and GSR off, so if anyone hates the full screen dimming, like I do, go on, it’s easy and you’ll never go back again.
@@n000rbiig how can you even tell logo dimming is working? The only way I knew it worked was the whole screen dimmed. lol! I want to turn off GSR so bad but I am absolutely paranoid logo dimming will not function anymore. I am a gamer so HUDS are a worry for me.
@@clyptonimusprime I’m a gamer as well and for me the best test for logo dimming is Super Mario 3D World, because after completing a level it immediately shows a plain red screen where you can easily spot the darker areas, where it dimmed the logos. If I turn logo dimming off, the plain red screen is evenly bright, no darker spots, so for me it’s enough proof that it works even with GSR set to off.
@@n000rbiig wouldn't the darker spots be indicative image retention? An even red screen would tell me logo dimming is doing it's job and the image isn't sticking around.
Very weirdly timed! It's been happening suddenly on my c9 over the last couple of weeks with Captain Marvel on D+ and For All Mankind on Apple TV. I'm still well within my warranty but I'm tempted to apply this fix, for fear of it getting worse.
There are hundreds of reviews on youtube about how good oleds are but surprisingly no one has ever highlighted this issue. I had almost made my mind to go for oled as I am planning to get new tv this month. This seems too much of hassel now with oled. Now, I prefer to go with mini-led, may be from TCL in 75 inchs which prices nearly sane as 65 inch of mind. With mini-led we might get 90% picture quality of oled, but can be rest assured of vibrant bright image throughout and yes 100% peace of mind. Thanks Vincent for this timely video 🙏
@@GraveUypo I have a 65 LG C1. I was actually very disappointed in the black shadow details when watching HDR and Dolby Vision videos. The black shadow details are missing, it's like the pixels need to be turn completely off below a certain point. For normal non-HDR or non-DV video it looks fine. This TPC (ASBL) problem I noticed on the first day of having it. Some scenes would get way darker than necessary. It really upset me until I researched it the next day and ordered my $8 remote from Amazon. I don't know how they can ship a TV so broken like this. Once you turn off TPC, the experience is good, but I'm really wondering if QLED would have been better for the shadow details.
Hi Vincent, my Panasonic JZ2000 also suffers the first issue in this video. Can you show a way to fix for panasonic OLEDs? I've entered the service menu but the options are limited unlike LG and Samsung shown in this video. Thanks.
On my 77CX, the scene in Dune you mentioned got so bad for me that I couldn't even see what was going on. I thought it was HBO max being wonky until I hit a button on my remote and it brightened up to reveal the true image. This behavior is extremely annoying.
Fortunately you own a LG OLED ... because LG allows to de-activate all these annoying behaviours and get entirely rid of it :-) Denis Villeneuve starting to use HDR at it's full potential would also help ;-) Btw I almost got mad about this when watching "Game of Thrones" season 8 ... dark scenes being dimmed further to almost disappearing ... horrible. I had to press the "settings" button twice every 30 seconds or so to ragain the original brightness ... immersion is different. I bought a service remote, disabled TPC ... and there we go ... watching "GoT" was a pleasure since :-)
@@lfsky I love the 77CX. Honestly the only issue I have with it is the issue discussed in the video. I will probably try and buy that service remote to shut off the dimming protection.
@@lfsky But not for 4k native rendered games though right? Those should be tack sharp already. Also super resolution shouldn't be available for game mode.

I have a huge issue with the 24p stutters in slow camera movements, and am not as happy with my Oled as I have been with my LED in that regard. Another anomaly that I found in my LG C1 are some brighter spots of dark grey colors which is very visible in certain moments, most of the time in movies. Those brighter spots are to be found in the edges with my LG C1, which bothers me a lot. On the other hand, my C1 has some advantages over the TVs I owned before, so it‘s a double-edged sword, but in the end far from perfect. The next TV I‘m getting will be a certain LED model again (QLED probably) and hopefully its weaknesses won‘t bother me too much…
The TV / Monitor industry still can't solve the HDR heating issues, while we know where that issue is mostly coming from. We all clearly see they are pushing for thin models while they could add a layer of heat dissipation instead.
Crazy thing thats not even heatsink, just metallic film. I would prefer real aluminum exposed to air heatsink 2 cm “height”. Its on the back of TV, i dont give a f…
@@ezilka A real heatsink is not required as it isn't a "high temperature issue" but an "uneven temperature" issue. A thick(er) metallic plate does the job here perfectly ... the required function is a "heatspreader" here (levelling out hot spots as fast as possible) ... similar to what was used on former PC CPUs. But I agree, to even reducing the entire temperature level of the panel I would also except having the panels thicker than these 5mm and equipped with cooling fins :-)
@@marcuscole8796 real heatsink should improve ABL, because if ALL screen is very bright - it generates alot of heat. And it prolongs live of oled pixels if they not get hot.
@@ezilka Yes, I fully agree ... for ABL it would noticeably help having increased cooling capacity for the entire screen. Nevertheless as from my point of view (ABL is not so much an issue for me) ... they should start with getting a heatspreader installed in every OLED tv ... like A90J, G2 and the JZ2000/1500. This heatspreader already allows for reduced temporary image retention, reduced burn in risk, increased longevity and last but not least for 25% higher peak brightness ... as can be seen on Panasonic tvs from 2019 GZ2000 onwards and also the LG G2. Plus it seems the heatspreader already helps with ABL because the G2 is less aggressive regarding ABL than e.g. the C2.
6-7 years ago i was scannig the market for a new 75 inch tv. Since all OLED's over 65inch where incredibly expensive I went with LCD. Coming back after 6 years and seeing that OLED still have issues is suprising...
Hello Vincent, thank you for using CX again with pleasure. During this year's World Cup, I started playing Fifa 23 where the image editing pissed me off. Finally, thanks to you, everything looks as it should!
That I believe is a defect. Call for warranty service if you bought extended warranty. If not, call LG. They will usually replace the panel for free one time even out of warranty. Their customer service is excellent!

I can't say how grateful i am, haha. Thank you. Now i just have to buy a proper Samsung tv control with numerical buttons.
I am just fine with the HUD in games being "locally" dimmed, so on the C1 I keep "Adjust Logo Brightness" to "High". The only reason I would want to turn it off is if the setting is tied to global luminance. Hopefully I can achieve this by keeping "Adjust Logo Brightness" to "High" but turning off GSR.
I agree with you if it only dims the logos and not the full image. I've been using it on high on my LG C1 but I wonder now if the setting just dims the screen when it detects a static image?
@@ravencorb1354 it does dim the whole screen. Play a game for an hour and then turn the feature off, watch your picture get significantly brighter. It does not dim logos specifically, it dims the entire picture. Other tech channels have confirmed it with measurements.

I have 2019 LG 65" OLED. Kicks absolute balls! Zero Problems. Shout out to LG warranty service: Cheap 45" bedroom tv stopped connecting to wifi. They sent a repair guy to my house the next day to change the wifi board. 😎
I have always disabled TPC and GSR on my LG OLEDs. I live in Germany and a service partner technician from LG swapped my panel two times and I turned TPC and GSR back on when he came. No problem whatsoever. They always go into the service menu, but for other reasons. In terms of chrominance overshoot. I haven't seen any overshoot on my few weeks old 77C2 so far in various torture scenes. For me the C2/G2 is the best WRGB OLED to this date. I have the Sony 55A80J, LG 48C1 and had the 65C9 with two swapped panels (because of vertical banding). My 77C2 also has the best uniformity I have ever seen on any of my OLEDs.
Thanks for the insight ... good to know setting it back to normal seems to be sufficient. Nevertheless I have "TPC" disabled on my 65C7 and I will immediately also de-activate it on the 77G2 I am going to buy soon. It is just inacceptable...
@@agl10 In retrospect, it was just stupid and a waste of resources, which I'm not proud of. Shortly before the end of the warranty period, I had my panel replaced because I wanted to sell the 65C9. Thought I could get a little extra cash with a brand new panel. But the new panel was a disaster in terms of vertical banding. So I had to have the panel replaced a second time, which was fine in terms of vertical banding (my original panel was fine too). But since then I've noticed a "bug" which randomly often appeard where you saw ugly gradations in the near black area especially in low bit rate content. So at the end I didn't sell the TV to anybody and instead gave it to my cousin for free.
I really thought oled TVs were the top of the food chain but seeing how it still dims the picture even after turning off all the brightness limiters is just incredibly disappointing. I really hope that issue gets fixed on future models because these things are far too expensive to get away with crap like that.
Every technology has up and downsides. The perfect panel doesn't exist (yet). WRGB OLED & QD-OLED is the best we've got for now in terms of image quality and pixel response time. With that said some of those auto dimming algorythms are more annoying than they are helpful. Dimming a scene to this extent just because of static APL isn't gonna do much for the longevity of the panel, but it'll make the displayed content unwatchable. Luckily examples this extreme aren't that common during normal use, but the manufacturers need to do a better job at identifying genuinly problematic situations.
I think you can disable it on a Philips TV without voiding your warranty. I entered the service menu and there was no option so have voided my warranty anyway haha but I actually found the option for oled TPC in another menu that did not warn me about warranty. Quickly press- home 1999 back. This will open a small pop up window on the left, TPC was option 63 for me. I think this may need done every time you turn the set off and on though.
The courtroom scene it's from the 2020 movie "Pieces of a Woman". I'll look for the HDR version to test if my OLED is affected. Thank you very much. Edit: I couldn't find and HDR version of Pieces of a Woman, so I'll go with 1917 instead. I could also watch the whole thing again, it was an amazing movie.
I so wish I had known about the APL problem before I bought my C1. I'd have almost certainly gone with a QD-LED instead. Even with OLED's superior blacks, this auto-dimming would have been a deal killer for me. So incredibly annoying on such an expensive TV
Tad..apl/abl is included on all newer 4k tvs with hdr and or dv including non oled tvs such as qd-oled, led and lcd. Samsungs seem even more aggressive to some users. Certain programs, using it as a pc monitor and certain games seem to increase it but under regular use you may not notice it much if at all. It is easily fixable as this video provides. Far from a deal breaker.
Question between the LG C2 and G2 - both using the EVO panels. Does the G2 have some of the recommended service menu changes enabled to gain extra brightness or is there a physical difference in the panel?

I posted a few months ago that I didn't have the dimming problems. After watching Dune and recently Vesper, the problem was so blatant that it made film scenes unwatchable. This is clearly a defect. I own a LG C8 and will getting into the service menu soon to fix it.
I am glad i followed your advice and picked up a well-engineered Panasonic Oled. Didn't have any weird issues or problems, and as well fantastic near black performance.
I really wish that OLED manufacturers would implement frame fading/averaging instead of interpolation, so simulating slower pixels. Would look so much better than nothing and SO much better than interpolation.
As someone who highly dislikes that kind of interpolation, I must say the LG C2 I recently got does a good job. I still didn't like it, but it's not terrible!
I do not have that type of anomaly. But I do have one other type of an anomaly in my secondary tv. It is a LG 55A1 it has about quarter of the width of the panel in right hand side slightly dimmer than the rest of the image with clear visible line differentiate it to the rest of the panel. It appeared slowly and it is getting worse.
@Codebreaker Seems odd since it is only like six months old and it has already a burn. My 65E9 does not have anything and it is much older and many times the hours.
After 3 years, 2 green lines appeared in my pana Oled. I baby sit this tv and even reduced the hdr from 100 to 60. Beside the disappointment, I am surprising myself considering a mini led again. Vincent, I have a Samsung QN85Q80tAFXZA (QLED) with a very similar problem as you describe in Issue 1. While watching 4k HDR content such as Sandman, the Crown and Emily in Paris, the content does not auto dim after a few minutes but is always noticeably dimmer/darker than it should be. I also have a QN75Q6FNAF (4K QLED) which does not have this problem. I will attempt the solution as you have outlined but I want to get your thoughts on the 85 QLED always displaying a noticeably darker image and not auto dimming. The darker/dimmed images only display on Netflix 4k content in the 85 TV. Thanks and I appreciate your content.
Vincent, I guess I found the way to turn off APL on Philips oled tvs without entering the service menu. Go to settings/general settings/advanced/OLED screen settings/local image protection/off. I did some tests and the picture is not dimming anymore.
@@Chrisratata I always use filmaker mode, so backlight at max settings. Now the screen dims much less and you it takes a lot of time to start dimming. About burn in, no issues as long as you don’t have a static logo on a corner of the screen like tv broadcast or soccer score/time. So with Netflix etc it should be fine.
Turn OFF ASBL is a must on the S95B. i never seen a tv that dims so fast and so much and also takes so long time to come back to the real brightness. its also impossible to calibrate it with it on No ASBL and its almost like a new tv.
On the LG C1 you don´t need a service remote, the menu can be accessed via the web browser and then navigated with the magic remote. Useful for someone who does not want to buy a second remote.
Is the ASBL issue fixed now on B2 03.33.55 released Aug 4? It doesn't appear so, is there a movie/time marker on netflix or youtube that can be used to easily test for the issue?
I figured this out within the first month of buying my 77 inch C1. At first I couldn't figure out why my 5 year old 1st gen B6 oled was brighter than my brand new C1. It was really pissing me off. Lol. Found this service menu work around and have been happy ever since. It's unfortunate we have to void our warranty to get the TV to work properly.
How would LG even know if you have gone into the service menu anyway, and if you change things, just change them back to how they were, before claiming warranty.
The service menu keeps a log of everything if you enter it even if you don't change anything. Entering it at all automatically voids the warranty. Lg knows because the tv technician must enter the service menu for repairs and so if it is under warranty, lg requires the repairing technician to send them specific information about the service menu before they can repair the tv
Omg thanks Vincent! I am so doing this on my LG CX. Some of the HDR games I play I have to this annoying dimming happening. I can't stand it. I play alot of Sea of Thieves and the brightness is always dimming. Hopefully this fixes that nonsense.
Weird. Have a c1 and have never had this issue. My old Samsung led lcd used to do this non stop. It was incredibly annoying. Had to switch modes in a scene to get it to snap out
Hello Vincent! Thank you very much for making such an insightful video. I struggled with many of these issues when I first got my OLED; had this video existed, it would have saved me weeks of fiddling and deep AV forum surfing. Just one question: Does using the “in-stop” function reset the service menu access log as well as the tv?
Thanks so much for this! The darkening issue was really annoying and happened so frequently in my experience. I am now glad to be rid of it. Got the remote and made the change on my C9 and problem no more!
Vincent never sleeps! 😲 This video just made me realise again why I love my Samsung Q80T QLED! Nothing immerses & excites me like a vibrant HDR picture/movie, and I never have to worry about screen burn-in and scrubbing my pixels. HDR everything. 😀

So in other words all these anomalies are caused by manufacturer's OLED burn in protections. So if you want the best picture your OLED can outpput you have to essentially risk voiding your warranty and an increased risk of burn in. This is why I am reluctant to get an OLED TV.

Firmware updates are scary. I just got a new notification on my cx just now. Damnt I wish I could stop it.
Why not blocking lg servers to stop fw updates? I did that to my 2016, after the glowing blacks.

Plus it seems the heatspreader already helps with ABL because the G2 is less aggressive regarding ABL than e.g. the C2.
Finally. Hate this dimming effect on dark prolonged scenes. The question is it possible to simulate service menu button with IR blaster?
6-7 years ago i was scannig the market for a new 75 inch tv.
Since all OLED's over 65inch where incredibly expensive I went with LCD.
Coming back after 6 years and seeing that OLED still have issues is suprising...
Hello Vincent, thank you for using CX again with pleasure. During this year's World Cup, I started playing Fifa 23 where the image editing pissed me off. Finally, thanks to you, everything looks as it should!
I was worried about Burn-in after using my 55" CX as a monitor for two years. However, instead I have groups of stuck pixels in different colors.
Buy Sony Bravia OLED less likely get burn in
That I believe is a defect. Call for warranty service if you bought extended warranty. If not, call LG. They will usually replace the panel for free one time even out of warranty. Their customer service is excellent!
you a hero, since 2 years i wonder why this happens and how to turn that option off. But i have never bothered to look further into this. And now your video just pops up randomly on my feed.
@@mikew1080 thanks for the reply. Think I'm going to set it to low in that case.
Playing some games can be a nightmare (horror games) when the screen start to dim
@@ravencorb1354 if you want more brightness. Try turning off the vrr options and enabling boost in the game dashboard. For some reason that will raise your nits as well. Likely a firmware bug, but it works(so long as energy saving is off.)
It's a pain changing the option, but vrr should only be engaged when you have a specific title in mind to play.
What was the reason for you to change the panel twice?
7:39 I love the way Vincent says the word "three". XD
They are by far the best regardless.
This is not true. If you disable the limiters in the service menu, it will no longer dim the screen (aside from ABL due to near full screen white).
@@malazan6004They have advantages but I wouldn’t say “by far”. The average consumer would be fine with some cheapo lcd TCL I think.
@@seanmcbay are we talking the average consumer or the reality of the current technologies?
thank you vincent for discussing topics not discussed by others. live long and prosper
Thanks for the tips 👍🏾
I noticed al the dimming all time on my C9, was so annoying. Since I got my G2, I haven't noticed it happening at all.
The courtroom scene it's from the 2020 movie "Pieces of a Woman". I'll look for the HDR version to test if my OLED is affected. Thank you very much. Edit: I couldn't find and HDR version of Pieces of a Woman, so I'll go with 1917 instead. I could also watch the whole thing again, it was an amazing movie.
does lg c3 have this problem with dimming or not?
Gross
It's not "Far from a deal breaker" if it voids your warranty in a 1000+ screen. @@MushroomPlanett
@4.45 Just to let you know that I appreciated that excellent joke on GSR
Question between the LG C2 and G2 - both using the EVO panels.
Does the G2 have some of the recommended service menu changes enabled to gain extra brightness or is there a physical difference in the panel?
Physical difference in the panel. Service menu settings are the same.
thank you for clarifying what was happening with my Samsung OLED Tv.... the dimming is not very drastic fortunately
Thanks Vincent for always finding these issues with our tvs and giving us a solution . I'll be doing this to my lg c9 Pronto even though I haven't notice this issue . Unfortunately, I've noticed it with my lg g1 . Thanks as always Vincent for your hard work n honesty. U the man.
Bonjour
I have a c9 too so you think I should do it ?
Merci 😃
@@lausly04 tough call . I'm waiting for the service remote from Amazon. Once, I get the remote and do it ,I'll let u know if anything negative come of it . Even though it might be to early to see ,but I trust Vincent and my LG G1 will definitely be "hacked" causw it's having this issue .
@@camarykaren merci 😊
@@lausly04 np at all.
Just got the remote and I disabled the tpc ,went to Ozark and no fading. It's a done and I'm pleased .
I'm really loving my LG G1 a bit more . Also, did it on my lg c9 ,just in case. I didn't disable the GSR since it seems to be fine. YMMV.
Good luck.
Can you give the title and timestamp of the courtroom scene in the intro so I can test if my C1 has this issue? Plz and thanks!
Me too. One of the best manufacturer decisions I've made.
@@4.0.4The new LG C3 might be even better?
At 10:20 should blur reduction be left at 10?
I do not have that type of anomaly. But I do have one other type of an anomaly in my secondary tv. It is a LG 55A1 it has about quarter of the width of the panel in right hand side slightly dimmer than the rest of the image with clear visible line differentiate it to the rest of the panel. It appeared slowly and it is getting worse.
@Codebreaker Seems odd since it is only like six months old and it has already a burn. My 65E9 does not have anything and it is much older and many times the hours.
That's a problem you need a tech to fix
I haven't noticed any issues with near-black overshoot on my C1 so far, but now that I've seen this video I'm probably never going to unsee it lol
After 3 years, 2 green lines appeared in my pana Oled. I baby sit this tv and even reduced the hdr from 100 to 60. Beside the disappointment, I am surprising myself considering a mini led again. I just hope they improve enough next year especially Sony one with new improved soc. Love oled but had enough baby sitting the tv…
I had this issue with my ez950. I had to run panel maintenance 5 or 6 times but the green line progressively dimmed and then was removed completely.
@@haxmanz thanks for letting me know. Perhaps there is hope after all
Min led suffers blooming and blacks are not oled perfect. A deal breaker for me
I wrote to you two years ago when I got my panel. You finally made the video!
So buying an LG C2 will have the #3 issue with no way of getting rid of it. In that case i should look for a LED
Have they fixed issue #3 on the LG C3?...
Edit: Tested a C3 and the issue is GONE both TruMotion on n off. Just install latest patch to also fix #1!
And yes, bought the C3. Happy with it so far
Never seen someone turn ON motion smoothing. Wow. Do you recommend Cinema Screen?
How's this holding up now? No more dimming still? Any burn in creeping in as a result? What are your brightness settings?
@@Chrisratata I always use filmaker mode, so backlight at max settings. Now the screen dims much less and you it takes a lot of time to start dimming. About burn in, no issues as long as you don’t have a static logo on a corner of the screen like tv broadcast or soccer score/time. So with Netflix etc it should be fine.
Turn OFF ASBL is a must on the S95B.
i never seen a tv that dims so fast and so much and also takes so long time to come back to the real brightness.
its also impossible to calibrate it with it on
No ASBL and its almost like a new tv.
How to enter service menu ?
Definitely helps
I have the LG C1 77, and this effect had me starting to hate the TV. Thank you!
On the LG C1 you don´t need a service remote, the menu can be accessed via the web browser and then navigated with the magic remote. Useful for someone who does not want to buy a second remote.
How is this done?
Thanks, have just disabled it on my LG C7
'GSR' IS not in the oled settings? I assume it's on newer models only?
Hey Vincent, when will the TCL C935 review be out?
Is the ASBL issue fixed now on B2 03.33.55 released Aug 4? It doesn't appear so, is there a movie/time marker on netflix or youtube that can be used to easily test for the issue?
mine does it on C2 03.33.56
@@MushroomPlanett Ok good to know, thx
Omg thanks Vincent! I am so doing this on my LG CX. Some of the HDR games I play I have to this annoying dimming happening. I can't stand it. I play alot of Sea of Thieves and the brightness is always dimming. Hopefully this fixes that nonsense.
Exactly the problem I had. I went into service menu and fixed it.
Weird. Have a c1 and have never had this issue. My old Samsung led lcd used to do this non stop. It was incredibly annoying. Had to switch modes in a scene to get it to snap out
This may be the best video Vincent’s ever done for OLED owners.
No Vincent, you still look perfect on my OLED 😉
Thanks so much for this!
The darkening issue was really annoying and happened so frequently in my experience. I am now glad to be rid of it.
Got the remote and made the change on my C9 and problem no more!
Vincent never sleeps! 😲 This video just made me realise again why I love my Samsung Q80T QLED! Nothing immerses & excites me like a vibrant HDR picture/movie, and I never have to worry about screen burn-in and scrubbing my pixels. HDR everything. 😀
