I feel like your experience with Smash Bros is very similar to mine. I got it in May of last year,played it actively over the summer, but in September I was still considered the “beginner” among my friend group, and just kept losing (like 90% of the time). That’s when I gave up on the game. If it’s still feels like I got the game yesterday after four months of owning and playing the game, it really starts to feel like you will never be good at the game. It should be more welcoming to newcomers, or have a better online system, or even a mode that really trains you to be better at the game.

1:59 Well, that's not always accurate, just think about it like leveling up in an RPG. If your friend starts at level 10 while you start at 1, as long as you are both getting better, or gaining xp, at the same rate, it will continue to take longer and longer to level up each time, so eventually that gap will close as it starts taking longer to level up.
Interesting way to put it. Obviously real life isn't an RPG but it definitely takes more work to get better the more skilled you are.

As someone who has lost 2000 matches against my best friend since ultimate came out, and did an iron man challenge against him and he beat me with every single character on the roster against my main (Falco) in one sitting, I can give you, sir, reassurence that you are not a total failure. My friend and I have been playing smash together for almost an entire year and I have never ever ever once beat him fair and square. But! I'm still trying! Positivity is key! He's got 10+ years worth of smash and competition levels of skill against my measly 4ish years of casual playing with 1 year focusing competitively (total out of my whole 20+ year life LMAO). He's my ultimate goal to beat! This really just helped me out a lot in keeping my head up. This just randomly popped up in my feed too, and I'm glad I clicked! New subscriber without a doubt! Thx again friend!
