Next do a drywall kitchen counter. Drywall cabinets.
Now that's funny😂
Bad idea for kitchen countertops because drywall cannot handle any moisture
@@juan2049 Jesus Christ. I was kidding. I was trying to make a point that drywall is never appropriate for a horizontal surface that objects will be set on, including shelves.
@@juan2049just seal it, save money
😁😁😁
Use MDF for the shelf. You can finish it the same as drywall (corner beads, etc) but its alot more durable.
This, or he could've just used the plywood and coated it with hot mud. This is what I do on the wall right behind the knob. Never get a door knob hole again.
@@BigBrotherIsTooBigwhat is hot mud? I've never heard that term.
@@cheeseballs3825 It's the powdered dry mix that hardens after you mix it with water. You can find it at any home improvement store.
@@BigBrotherIsTooBiggoing to try that
@@Mthomas71188 The shelves or door knob hack? First time it did the door knob hack I literally slammed the door into the wall as hard as I could, broke the knob, small dent in wall, easy to patch with spackle.
I'm not sure if was best to use drywall for the actual shelves because they won't hold much weight if you ever want to use the shelves to store books or something like that, but you did a great job! They look good!
They will hold easily
Pretty sure they're going to hold fine for that small of a shelf.
This is a great way to give someone constructive criticism and also be very classy about it. Good job, sir.
The shelves are held by 2x4’s pal.
They aren’t moving!!
Looks clean, when the shelf breaks (not if, when) you can replace it with the plywood you took out originally and just paint it white. Also lol at 2x4 supports then using sheetrock.
Super supportive buddy. Just because all of your shit breaks doesnt mean his stuff will.
Yeah, he should have put down 1/2" plywood, then dropped the drywall on it. Oh well, a piece of cut to fit and polished tempered glass laid on top of the drywall shelf will solve the problem of "when it breaks". Granted, the approach is somewhat unconventional, and my guess would be it's the Mrs. that is the driving force behind destroying a perfectly good set of recessed shelves only to build another set of recessed shelves.
@@redformansfoot5718couldn't have said it any better 😂 spot on
they wont

They definitely look sharp, man. Great job! Do consider using MDF for the shelf surface for the next one, though. It’ll be cleaner and WAY stronger.
The opener "in my continued quest to suck less..." had me hooked - that's right where I'm at with drywall
Won't lie been doing drywall and carpentry for over 20 years..... And each day you show up to do drywall..... it sucks just as much as the day you learned how to mud...😂
Drywall shelves? I've never heard of that.

Shitty builders use drywall shelves.
The Shittyest builders use mdf.
I don't know how strong they are but the results look great.👏👏👏👏👍👍👍
plenty
Damn, that came out clean af. Didn't expect that at all.
The modern flat trim work goes great with it too 👍
Thank you so much! Great eye in the trim I think they fit together well too. Thanks so much for the kind words and for watching!
Nice work my problem is that I never know when to leave the mud alone... Lol
That is so well said. I have the same issue, trying to fix one small mark in wet compound always makes it look so much worse. I’ve heard painters say the same thing about a drip of paint, better to let it dry and fix it after. I never take that advice though. Thanks for watching and the words of wisdom!
Dude me too..I always go over one more time and ruin it and have to wait for it to dry to do it again.
Looks cool, and if they're used for decorations like in the video, no problem as far as durability goes.
Agreed, they should be pretty strong but wouldn’t suggest using it as a ladder. Thanks for watching!
“ expensive but it gave me clean lines” quality over cost🔥🔥🔥
Spray adhesive and staples......
Thank you! Thank You! Thank You!
It works excellent!
Yes! I’m a huge fan of it too. Thanks for sharing and for watching!
Yeah you're actually supposed to attach the bead to the drywall ONLY. If you nail or screw the bead into the stub below the drywall, it is guaranteed to crack over time. This is because the stud is wood, and shrinks, the drywall does not shrink.
That is just simply false
@@nickchristian1590 nope
@@ModernGentleman CODE: ASTM C840 • The external corners shall be protected with a metal corner bead or other suitable type of corner protection that shall be attached to supporting construction with fasteners or a crimping tool nominally 6 inches on center.
@nickchristian1590 so, the crimper crimps the bead all the way into the stud?? The "supporting construction" is the drywall. The fasteners are staples..
@ModernGentleman we screw into the holes provided by the manufacturer (the outer ones) that are intended to receive screws. Haven't had to repair anything, haha. I would say the "supporting construction" would be framing, and I would have called anything like sheetrock to be a "supporting substrate." Love how "you have to follow code" but it can be interpreted differently, lol. Keep on keeping on
Stan glass window 🪟 n between add glass shelves . You see the light that came through it brightened the whole room up after he removed the centre board .
Small recessed lighting under each shelf would have been awesome. Next time.
I love that idea! Thanks for the awesome idea and for watching!
Mud goes under tape and corners. Scrap over it to set it in place. Then you mud over the top. That tape will peal in a year.
Right, no prefill and just spray adhesive….
Looks like he did mud before taping. Just didn't show it in video.
Watching you pass up on the opportunity to turn that into a secret doorway really made me upset
It’s amazing what gets put on the internet as a good idea. Sadly, some don’t know enough and follow blindly.
Now that I've seen this I believe there's one good answer to solve the issue which is the mafia. Remember when the government doesn't do much and then you have the mafia let's do that.
Looks Beautiful! And staples is Genius! 💞
Nice work! Im sure those will hold up just fine as long as they are not overloaded.
Someone drops grandma’s urn and your shelf becomes a closet.
You did a nice job. Unless you pile up a bunch of stuff, you've lost 2 of 5 shelvs. You could have edged & faced everything with fancy moulding, saving time & $$. On rhe other hand, you've upgraded your skills. Always a plus.
Drywall shelves arent a thing bud, its not meant to hold weight. If you were gonna be stupid about what material your shelf is made of, at least use thicker sheetrock.
How much weight could you possibly put in a 2ft wide living room shelf?
At most they're going to hold some books.
I bet you have lots of friends, bud.
@@theoriginalmonstermakerdrywall is as strong as wet cardboard. kid.

@@you_tube6733 it's framed with 2x4s, you can't seriously be that stupid. How do you think floor joists work? It's the same s*it. The 2x4s add strength, it's not a floating drywall shelf, you guys really have to be ret*rded.
I have this same quest. Keep it up!
Thank you! I sure will and you do as well!
Why are you using the plastic corner bead? Get you a pair of tin snips, a corner bead crimper, and use the metal bead. It's not only cheaper than plastic bead (depending on your area), but it's also thinner, meaning you use less mud and save money.
The end result looks _so_ much better! Glad you went with less shelves and less visual clutter.
Screw all these negative comments. You did great!
Don't treat him like a fking 5yo girl...
Bro made a shelf meant to hold weight out of drywall
@@cbjueueiwyru7472 drywall can hold a lot of weight. you've just no idea what you're talking about.
looks nice but lost alot of space, it went from 5 shelves to 3. 🙁
That’s true, part of that was by choice the old shelves were about 12” apart and these are 16”. I probably could have stuck one more in there but went for higher shelves. You are right though the old shelves were 3/4” thick and these are 4” so way bigger. Definitely something to think about when deciding if these shelves are right for you. Thanks for the input and for watching!
Whats an alot?!
You should have also used plywood or MDF for the shelves, drywall is not made to hold anything over a void... You're just asking for a break.
it also wernt from sturdy to weak as wet cardboard.
Pro tip* always use spray adhesive, the 3M 44 works best, and if you use staples, go thick with your initial coat. GG bro!
Oh but those freaking shelves look fantastic dude good job.
Thank you so much! I really appreciate it and am glad you like it. Thanks so much for watching!
Great work, but a two sided shelf would’ve been really cool.
Drywall studs, dryway doors, drywall siding... ur on a path to having great job security as long as ur clients can't count past 10
I hate drywall. Use wood instead.
Dude, that looks frikin fantastic
in other words, wrong
Thank you so much! Both for watching and for the kind words!
I’m waiting patiently for the drywall bath tub
I agree with others you need a MDF for things to sit on. But you did a really great job of it all. I had my doubts when you started but it looks well lush. Great work 👍
The end result looks good man. If i may, I'd like to share some of my experience, and hopefully, it helps. The best way I've learned to mud well, is to do it the older way. Bend the tape yourself, feel every bit of the process. Sometimes staples work their way out due to wood breathing (key word: sometimes), also if you can don't let the shelves be hollow (inside). Over time, rock can bow when laid horizontally with a load on it, like a shelf, so adequate framing would be your best friend. You didn't mention the type of mud you use, but I've learned that mixing your own mud is better than premade. But if you can not mix your own, that's fine. Add soap (dish soap) to your mud (you can do the same if you make your own mud mix too). It makes the mud smoother. There's more stuff, but I don't want to overstay my welcome.
These are things i picked up while in the trades and when i had to fix other people's screw ups.
Those turned out really nice! Good job!
Thank you so much!
Okay so I'm renovating my house and I just did three doorways of corner bead and mud and drywall I took three doors down no pun intended and made them door less entryways. If I had known for crying out loud that they actually made vinyl corner bead and that you could tell me that I could actually staple that s*** instead of screwing them in my God the time it would have saved and the effort sanding because of the vinyl and staples I would have saved.
I totally know how you feel I’ve done exactly what you did for many projects and it worked fine but like you said a lot more time and effort with that method. I hope this method works well for you on your next project and thanks so much for sharing and watching!
Try aluminium beads for the corners in future you can stick them with mud so bonded to the wall better. Just make sure they are level before they set
To all those saying drywall will not hold…
These were in just about every house built in 95-00 with big cubed recesses for those big (heavy) tube TVs The drywall will hold up fine. My only question is “Why?” when everyone else is having them removed and replaced with more traditional built-in shelving!
Good job looks good
Thank you I’m so glad you enjoyed it!
good job, i'm gonna be doing this in my office soon
The shelf itself is made of a sheet of dry wall ? I saw the 2x4 up front, but it appears that's the extent of ur 2x4 use .. those shelves are going to collapse through...
I would have reused the plywood. You would never know the difference.
Yeah, maybe also used a 2x4 on the back. I had to recently build a wall on the floor and even at 16 on center the drywall was scary to move on (stayed on the studs). Maybe he added more 2x4braces we didn’t see 🤷♀️. I would have put the plywood underneath the drywall if i had to have a drywall look
Good job! Those staples will probably rust through your mud & tape. If they do, dig them out, re mud-all good!
Great job on deciding to become better at DW.
Thank you! Practicing and looking up tips are the only ways I know to get better. Thanks for watching!
Looks good! 👍
Thanks so much!
Just use metal paper faced corner bead installed with durabond 20 minute set. No big D. Looks great and super strong
Looks way better
Thanks so much!
I am on the same quest…. Idk why but in all the stuff I do drywall is always a nemesis.
Fantastic end result!!!
Damn, looks good man!
Looks good but I think you could’ve actually gone with half the width of the shelf supports and still had strong support while also leaving space for a couple more shelves in the set.
Next: Drywally your roof! So smooooooth!
Great job. I've got no advice really, seems you figured it out well.
But yeah, those vinyl beads, don't use screws because it'll suck it down too much, and it'll bubble.
Your voice reminds me of Chris the son from Family Guy! 🤣 Great job tho! I learned something here. 👍🏼
Thanks so much! I’m so happy to hear you learned something! I’ve definitely heard the Chris Griffin comment before, I hope it gave you a chuckle. Thanks for watching!
You should do a drywall sink, toilet, and shower next.
Oh cool man, good job!
Thank you I’m so glad you enjoyed it!
Nice job. I too, suck at drywall.
Thank you! We all do at first maybe we’ll be better someday, until then tricks like this help. Thanks for watching!
I never use screws or anything for the corner metal or whatever I’m using mud will work way better than any screw will.
I had no idea Zach Galifianakis was such a handy guy.
Bloody good 👍 job mate!
Beautiful work!

He has "Chris from Family Guy" all-grown-up voice going on wholesale!!
Great work!
that shelf open up through to the room behind would look super cool dividing two common areas
Wow! Great job!
A friend of mine who does a dry wall for a living just sticks the corner protectors on the mud, doesn't fix it in any other way. Just put some mud on the inside, press it against the edge, and smooth the outside. Wait until it holds, put another thin layer of mud to cover any dimples
Looks good...lites next time
Great idea! Thanks so much!
mate i thought you where going to leave the vinyl showing. good job looks great
Plywood or mdf for shelves not drywall ... it's not ment to hold a load in the direction
Decent work
Thank you!
So you put a weaker material in for a shelf then paint it? Makes no sense. Use a smooth plywood if you’re going to paint it. At least that way it won’t get dinged easily and can hold some weight.
Good thing it’s his home
The ply wood looked tacky be for real

So you think is better to have drywall shelves over wood?

Great question, no I don’t think it’s better I think they are both great options. Thanks for watching!
Came out pretty good bro
Came out nicely
You should have considered some thinner shelves and supports. You could have went back to 5 shelves. I seriously doubt it will ever hold any weight to justify 2x4s.
If I am not mistaken, the corner bead has a pre-applied adhesive, just moisten and put in place. I have used these, super strong
That’s really interesting. The ones I used didn’t but that sounds like an awesome feature maybe I’ll give those a try next time. Thanks for sharing and for watching!
@OneWayToMake they are available at Lowe's
Nice brother. They look good.
You need to start working with higher quality plywood and mdf, dump the 2x4s unless you need some serious strength (like 500+ lbs). Learn to build things like you would cabinetry. You'll find the results of home upgrades much better and longer lasting. Looks good though, hope it holds.
Drywall shower pan
Good job! Looks great what you've done
General question: I was taught to put mud under the corner protectors, is that the right way to do those? I was told it made them much more durable.
That’s a great question, yes that’s another manufacturer acceptable way to instal these. I don’t know if one is better than another but they both work well, do whichever feels best for you. Thanks for watching!
Looks great, but will require constant maintenance vs some white built in wood shelves
Your quest to suck less at drywall lead you to suck more at shelving. Lol. Those things are gonna get absolutely destroyed if you ever put anything on them at all. There's a reason this isn't a thing.. It's not because you're a genius. 😉
Now, if you'd sheathed the top in some kind of durable material, with steel corner beads at your leading edges, that may hold up since the drywall is essentially just a fascia.. Maybe glass, or lexan as a protective cover at this point? But as others have pointed out, you also ate up a lot of space for it..
Your mud job did come out tits though, bud. Pat yourself on the back for that part. 😊
I bet nobody has ever called you a dick
nice job , looks much better
Thanks so much!
Looks good but I probably would have gonna with a bull nose edge
I love that idea! Good thinking and thanks for watching!
Pretty much perfect mate 👍
So ... When you spill water while watering that plant it falls through to the floor. 😂
Looks good. Why not 1x2's, and 1/2" oak plywood and paint? More room with a stronger shelf which can be painted with a very smooth finish. Drywall everything else.
Spot on work pal nicely done
Thanks so much!
If I close my eyes I hear Chris griffin
I'm not going to lie. It looks good but I do have questions about how durable a drywall shelf is going to be. I still think I would have stuck with plywood for the actual shelves
Dude this was great look
