@@rhull3939 what about the next paint job and the one after that... first off mesh tape sucks from the start. It's very hard to sand or hide a seam. This patch would have been fixed by a professional without any tape. It's called a California patch or a hot patch. It's where you cut the sheetrock the size of the hole with a snug fit while leaving the outside paper of the rock about 2 to 3 inches wider than the patch all the way around it. The paper left acts as paper tape while the sheetrock plugs the hole..... do me a favor and don't call bull when your talking to someone with well over 30 years experience in drywall.... thanks

I've readhered plaster in a 1920 postmaster's office. Unless you live in a seismically active area, the reason patches tend to crack is shrinkage of the mud. Using this little drywall compound, you're not going to experience much contraction. I'm an electrician also, but I have done enough drywall to know that this is fine for what was probably a double gang receptacle box that no longer exists at about 4" square.

@@AerationalImportant to point out to anyone else that the only reason for the wood when doing this patch it simply to provide a surface for the patch to sit against so it can be flush with the rest if the wall. The tape and mud provide the actual strength of the patch as any piece of wood drilled into drywall will come apart just as easily as the drywall or patch would break. Also a reminder that these patches need to be done with hot mud.

You should be using that super thin fiberglass tape for this kind of job anyway since it's thinner and requires less mud, which will give you a better finish.

You can make a patch by cutting the back of the drywall and snapping it, peel, and leave front paper on. Make piece a inch longer on all 4 sides. Put mud on flaps, and inside hole, place patch in, wipe the flaps down, and then cover the whole thing with 5 minute set, allow to set, use 20 minute set to finalize.

I threw a coffee mug through a wall in motel I was staying at with my wife, put a hole about twice the width of a baseball fairly round, plaster board , so I went to hardware shop and pretty much bought exactly this stuff in video. I took a piece of wall with me so paint shop could match paint on piece in there colour scanner.
Did exactly what they did here sanded it back then dried and painted it, had to fully open windows, lucky we were on top floor and we were at end of a hallway with wind blowing down and into our room, the windows inside open kept pulling the air and letting the air coming under front door out and no smell of plaster and paint. Bought some scented candles with subtle smells one was "neutral " smell and other had a light "ocean " smell, no one ever said anything. Paint matched perfectly after drying, ive had it not match after drying but I think he made a few shades different to account for this, the paint age.
Cost me $78 for bits and pieces basic tools, sand paper, filler, flat edged tool, etc, I spent $40 on taxi to hardware and back and had to pay an extra $35 at hotel for late checkout, yep it happened 30min before checkout time finish and then they charged me a second late checkout fee of $65. I was worried it might fall out or change shape before it dried, I rushed it but did a pretty good job in the end just had to wait for it to dry and it smelled and was shiny where it was still wet. All good in the end though, I was so lucky my cup didn't go through the otjer side if wall I to a couples room. They definitely heard it gonthrpugh my side and his theres really hard because I heard a female WTF WAS THAT. I opened door and a young guy my age opened door, he wouod of been listening to my wife and I argue and I look at him and about to say im sorry and he interrupted and says "No you good bro, don't worry I've heard everything that bitch been saying to you, don't worry you good." LOL but yes I shouldn't have thrown mug at wall at all in first place, no matter how much she made me angry or mad

If anyone wants to know how to properly patch a hole like that, you should search for Vancouver Carpenter's video on how to do a California patch.
There are several things wrong with the method shown in this video, but rule number one is to always put tape over all seams. That is one of the most basic rules that should always be followed! There is more wrong with the method shown in the video, but the fact that he did not put tape spanning the seams is enough to prove that the patch is garbage.
If you are going to patch without placing wood behind it, you should definitely use a California dry wall patch. There are hundreds of videos on UA-cam that show how to do a California patch correctly.
When I have patched holes in my own house, I actually used a piece of wood behind it and a California patch. I guarantee that my patches will last without cracking as long as the wall surrounding the patch.

Looks nice for now, but will most certainly fail in a short time. The rigidity of the patch is compromised because the patch piece of drywall isn’t bonded to anything. Since the mesh tape goes behind patch piece, it is not bonded. Further since the tape changes plains, the tensile strength is compromised as well. But it does look nice & smooth when it’s done.

Its ½" of gypsum too... Its like paper brick. Nice happy medium if the Big Bad Wolf comes to town.

No, that will be a weak spot always. What you have to do is to put a piece of backing wood behind and use drywall screws to secure it. Then you can put that block of drywall and mesh tape around.

I love how people in the comments are talking about drywall as if it's durable to begin with...

I've never thought of using tape to do that. What I normally do is will cut the wall at an angle so it doesn't fall in.

Understatement to be called artwork. Whenever I need to drywall my wife insists I call I professional.

It depends on who you're doing the job for really. Some people are cheap and only want the bare minimum done, and they want it done fast. In those cases, this is perfect.

I can see why an electrician would like this, it must be satisfying to see all the holes you guys make get filled up like it didn’t happen 😂👍

No... If you do this on my house i would fight you... That part of the wall will always be higher. Since you didnt use enough tape, now that tape will ALWAYS be applying a force to the small oiece of drywall instead of just supporting it... Nice 👍😂

As an automotive technician I will DIY almost any other trade's work, but drywall/plaster... I'd rather pay someone to do it right the first time. 😂

As an electrician myself, I can tell you that we are here to put holes in walls, not patch them.
If we happen to put them in the right spot, so much the better.

@@wtfdidijustwatch1017 Sometimes the drywaller forgets to cut out the hole for my outlet. Which is neither my fault, nor my problem.
I knew more than a few electricians who would "find" the outlet by dead reckoning. Since you seem to be well versed in electrical work, what do you recommend?
For the most part I would find them by rocking a straightedge horizontally and vertically until I found the center of the bulge where I would make the tiniest hole that I could, and use a piece of wire bent into an "L" that I would twist to try and hear if it was striking the wires rolled up in the box. If so, I would use the hole as my starting point to cut out the drywall covering the box. I almost always got it right the first time.
What never happened was a drywaller coming along behind me to say something patently stupid like "If I had done my job right this wouldn't have happened."
So how does it feel to be dumber than a drywaller?
